Buy a 30.00two person tent.40- .50 cans of great value soup and a bag of rice. A Sawyer water filter and you still have 30.00 for a knife poncho, fishing line and light. Cook in the cans or foil. You have to stay dry. Shelter, water food.

Sometimes they have 5ft x 7ft blankets for 5$. Those would be nice to add in, at least a few. Or survival blankets for about the same price.
My main concern was those 9$ camping meals. Really expensive way to feed yourself. I've been eating something called Lara Bars, a kind of meal bar thats less than $1 per bar. Each is sealed in plastic, so waterproof. Cliff bars aren't much more. Or you could buy canned soup for a few dollars a can (for the expensive stuff). Or bagged soups. Or rice, like you said. Summer sausages for extra protein if you want to add it. Long shelf life and not that expensive. And if you think it's too bland, most cheap spices are less than $1.

  • @justjosie8963

tell ya what. Years ago on a camping trip my bf brought a tarp and rope and every other couple had tents. It poured that night and we were the only ones who stayed dry! Probably had something to do with the spot he picked too.

Rather than gripes I would focus on what you did right. This was about the cost quality of gear which is a big thing for a lot of outdoorsman. You didnt get sick or hurt. You didnt get particularly wet or hypothermic and it did rain. You didnt do anything particularly stupid, any one you walk away from... good on you. Very little of your cheap gear outright failed. You didnt break blades or shred your shelter. The challenges came more from knowledge and decisions and skills rather than gear performance. I think there were a LOT of valuable lessons here for greenhorns and old salts alike.

Don’t waste $30 on the first item that has an axe, knife, etc. You are buying a folding saw anyway, that will be the only blade you need for a 7 day trip, and the rest isn’t vital.
Don’t waste $15 on 2 breakfast skillets, instead buy a 20 lb. bag of rice and 2 dozen eggs for $25. Hard boil the eggs on day one and you now have more than 3 eggs per day and almost 3 lbs. of rice per day, so carbs and protein.
Buy a $5 pot in cookware instead of the $15 cookpot set. You only need the one pot, the rest isn’t vital.
Now you have more food and $30 more to spend so go buy a wool blanket, which will cost $20. Or if it will be warm, then dress warmly (overdress) and spend that $30 on carrots/potatoes. Don’t forget to bring salt and maybe other seasonings (but for sure salt). Think about bringing a bar of soap, you will be out there for 7 days after all.

Though Mountain House is good if you need something with a 25 year shelf life, for that same approx. $13.00 you could have gotten enough canned food to last you the entire week. Canned food is only heavy because of the moisture content, but if you are looking to travel a considerable distance to safety then a little extra weight is a fair trade off. As you travel you will be eating some of the food which will reduce the weight of your pack. Another plus is that you can open a can and keep on walking instead of having to stop, filter water, boil the water and prepare your dehydrated food. The cans can be rinsed out and put back in your pack with the lids bent back down as dry storage or even as a container to boil water if you have no pans. And you don't want to toss the cans which could leave a trail for unwelcome party's to follow. Even a small can can be made into a hobo stove. The moisture in the canned food will reduce the consumption of your filtered water which will reduce the amount of times you have to stop to find and filter water. Etc.

You had $100 to use in a Walmart and you blew it all in the sporting goods section? A quarter of your budget was used on a blade kit...that kit... And the cook set...there is a whole department with cooking utensils for a fraction of the cost. Two freeze dried meals? Dude, spam and rice for days for what you spent. Seriously, I challenge you to make second video where you take advantage of what the actual store has to offer. Tip : the same paracord is cheaper in the hardware area. Not making that up.

The machete is great. The striker works great as well. This kit is well worth the $30 I paid for it. It's pretty sad that all these comments about the hatchet is junk is from people that obviously don't have a clue how to use a hatchet. You probably only need the saw, axe, or machete, but I guess the yard will be looking nice after.
If you are looking for budget meals that have a long shelf life I would say lentils are the way to go. They just about triple in size after you prepare them, don't require soaking like beans, are packed with protein, and I think a 2lbs bag is around 50 cents. Just don't forget the hot sauce to keep them interesting!

True. Freeze dried is a bit different. The Wal-Mart I work at sells regular basic pancake mixes and breads, etc. in the camping section, but it's put in a colorful package that has pictures of mountains and trees on it. It's EXACTLY the same as the generic stuff we sell on our baking aisles, just not the same brand. I was referring to those. Watching part 1 right now. Good stuff!

I have a knife and wire ..I know i will last 1 week....He then walked over to a birch tree and made a cut inserted a slice of wood into the hole And we watched water drip out I said sure but how are you going to catch the water .. He peeled the bark and formed a round tube with it And said I could make 20 cups if i needed to And you can eat the inner bark as a last resort too! He then showed us how to make snares And how to set them for Beaver / Rabbits And reached over to a plant and picked and chewed them ..Wild leeks Dad's moral was You can buy tools till the cows come home But you need to learn Your surroundings There is no sence in walking passed your apple tree to buy them at the store

What about your sleeping bag? Or at least the blanket. Instead of spending eight bucks on that scrappy little emergency tent I would have got a $6 tarp. And instead of the $29 junk kit which I saw at Walmart and didn't buy. Because it looks like junk I would have got the items you actually need for about $10 less. Which would have got you a cheap sleeping bags. That axe is useless. The flashlight is a waste of money since you already know you can just a headlamps for a dollar. The machete is substandard and if you wanted one you could buy one for six or seven bucks. And you could buy the Paracord for about $2 a bunch. They have other cooking kits there which are probably a better deal. What good are those bowls you can't even cook in? You can eat right out of the pot. And a trip through Walmart deli can give you all the free plastic silverware you want without costing you anything. Plastic knife Fork and Spoon. Napkins as well. You can get the same Flint with an actual striker for 5-6 bucks. With a backup lighter for a dollar. For a dollar you could get dental floss which works pretty good as fishing line in a pinch.

One 1lb bag of lentils at Walmart is about $1.34 (2022) a 4 lb bag is $5.63 (2022) the least expensive mountain house freeze dried bag is $7.55, for ONE meal.
The lentils, properly stored, would last as long as the freeze dried food AND would provide far more meals than ONE bag of freeze dried food.
An oven bag (you know the ones where you cook turkeys in) can withstand high heat and hold a substantial amount of weight. You can use them to collect water and boil it over a fire or at least for water storage and it is cheaper than the plastic water thing.
