    I recommend folks make their own kits. Much cheaper and easier to personalize.

    • @JohanSimonsson
      @JohanSimonsson 2 ปีที่แล้ว +37

      True, but if you know nothing about what you actually need then it’s a good idea to start with a pre made kit, and then practice with it. Then you will fairly fast realise what things actually works and what needs to be upgraded. Then you practice again, upgrade if needed. And at the end you will have a kit that is custom for the user with only things you know how to use.

      Ok.... So whT do you suggest is better gear?

    • @VincentGonzalezVeg
      @VincentGonzalezVeg 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I mean
      Press the steel
      Ok we want to compain about things
      For me it's usually shoes, cause humans have wide feet
      Instead of common TH-cam things where people will just like . . . s*** on other people verbally I want to actually like walk through the interconnected human emotions that make us all one that some call God
      In your anger about the pressed steel container
      So for the steel to be like this we need it pressed, after being a sheet, after being produced, after being made into steel, after being made into iron, after being extracted from ore
      All those processes & machines
      So if we work our way up to that, the cost for all those machines is far higher for 1 produced item
      The cost is representative of percentages of the cost to produce it + profit to do more than pay off the cost for production
      I like the tin
      Now that I'm watching the video some of these items are really shitty
      Okay so I get f****** pissed with all the petrol plastics, just out in the world being an inferior quality material- if I was Hank Hill plastic is not propane- is the mood
      I bitch about stuff all the time, then use those as building components for a solution, a problem is an opportunity to find a solution, and I want to know yours
      I've been writing up some stuff about a bug out bag and I think that a very very small tin like this one would be useful inside a bag or stashed in a car
      Get some kids some of those tins, (some container I'm feeling momentum of idea) so they can build up a survival kit they are accustomed to, like how you know your lunch bag so you know how to use your water bottle, the familiarity with your tools that give you that little benefit
      I've taken survival classes and I've started fire with my hands before so I hear you

      Make use of the petroleum that you might coat 😮your cotton in; as a skin protectant or moisturizer. Believe it or not but petroleum jelly doesn’t actually “moisturize” your skin. It blocks the natural moisture in your skin from evaporating/ leeching into your fabrics in heat, and it keeps your skin protected from the cold as an excellent barrier. Also, you can even coat your cotton in petroleum based A&D ointment. It’ll start your fires and be useful in a pinch if necessary!

    In the first day or two of a survival situation, you're going to want water, shelter, and food, so I would add a full water bottle, a 55 gallon clear trash bag, and some hard candy and lifeboat food. I like a clear trash bag because you can wrap yourself in it to stay warm, use it as a tent, you can use it to keep yourself off the wet ground, you can use it as a poncho, or make a solar still with it. You can also stuff it with leaves to use as a mattress.

    • @grayeaglej
      @grayeaglej 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes but no. Most of this stuff you would have to buy a large pack of to get the One you need for your kit, which raises the price. Figure $20 for the tin. Around $3 to $5 bucks each for things like the compass, razor knife, "multi tool", etc. Then the things you have to buy in bulk packs. Say $50 - $70 if you can find some deals or use lesser quality items. Way less if you already have most of this stuff laying around but that just means you payed for it in the past.

    • @ericf7063
      @ericf7063 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I'd say $15 is far too inexpensive. I put together a kit similar to this and it was closer to $195. Obviously these people are producing thousands of these and getting a deep wholesale discount. If the retail cost is $120, Id guesstimate production cost at around $40. Obviously not including assembly line, warehousing etc. I imagine their profit margin is modest.

    Just a brief note on the items you added: I would suggest also a few iodine prep pads. Basically iodine is better for sterilizing minor wounds or cuts, while alcohol is better for sterilizing implements such as your knife blade or scissors. Good review and a great compact survival kit. I was surprised to see the surgical tubing which has multiple uses, such as reaching into a crevice between rocks or in any small place where water may collect to extract it. Also there is enough plastic there to make a small solar still which could collect water in the tin, then use the tubing to drink the water without having to disturb the still.

    Good job getting it all back in the tin. There's another use for the tubing. One neat trick in warm weather to get evaporated water out of the ground is to use something non-porous, like a piece of the emergency blanket. Dig a hole and put the non-pourous sheet in it shaped like a cone pointing down, top it with a branch and leaves or something, and a day later if the ground is moist enough you should have collected clean, safe drinking water. Rather than taking the top cover off which would break the greenhouse-type seal, suck up the water with the tubing.

    • @jamesbowen5573
      @jamesbowen5573 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@oxxnarrdflame8865 my main point is purchasing a premade kit is ridiculous. So many people that buy them have no idea how to use the stuff. They also don't understand that most of the stuff is one-time-use. That's okay if you know for a fact you're only going to be lost for a day. Or in trouble for a day. But the truth is you don't know how many days you're going to be in trouble. I think people would do better for themselves actually taking a training course on survival like you did in the Air Force they have them for civilians too. If a person is that worried about survival it is real easy to educate yourself period and regardless to what you remember to bring with you, you always have knowledge with you once you get it. And if you really want to survive you don't want to dick around with a bunch of junk. You need tools you can use in an emergency and be familiar enough to make them work the first time. Being in trouble and opening one of those kits hoping that it works the way it was advertised is foolish. And I already gave a list of item-by-item in the comment section. A button Compass may be cool to wear on your watch band. But they are not always accurate. And just because they're accurate today when you put them in the kit does not mean they will be accurate a few months from now if you try to use them. All they are good for is general direction which you can determine so many other ways. But you cannot use one with a map very accurately. For one thing the North Pole is Shifting 37 miles a year so depending on your map and how old it is, you could be quite a few degrees off. I know if I'm somewhere and want to survive I don't want a little box full of junk to keep me alive. I want something I can depend on and something I can use. His original kit did not even have a knife you could do very much with. What the hell are you going to do with those knives? I guess if you got ahold of an animal or caught a fish it would cut them open but you sure as hell could not skin anything with one. You can't process would with it. They are so flimsy I doubt you could cut rope very efficiently. Oh I am very sure it will cut the 270 paracord but that's about it. Chances are people with a piece of mylar as a tarp probably don't know how to use it without tearing it up. That mylar plastic is exactly like a bag of potato chips. Once you rip it it rips all the way down. The only good way of supporting it as a shelter would be to use the duct tape you could easily make flaps where you need them with the duct tape and cut you some holes in it instead of your mylar cover. But they don't tell you that. They tell you it is a blanket. Nothing could be further from the truth. It is not a blanket in any sense of the word. Blankets insulate. Mylar does not.

    Great review and for the price an amazing kit! The compass looks like a rebadged American-made Sun compass which is outstanding! The Loksaks are used by the Navy and are waterproof to a pretty good depth. As a light geek I'd say the Photon is a good light. The price is actually outstanding for the level of quality in the kit! Agreed, the ziplocks are nice; it's good to see them bagging the supplies for organization, to keep the contents dry and to reuse the bags. Storage is always a bonus. The Chlor-Floc is some of the best stuff out there, with an agent that flocculates (ie causes sediments to clump and settle to the bottom). While there's always room for improvement I'd say this kit is one you could actually live out of for 24-48 hours. IMO if it's not enough to survive with on its own then it's not really a survival kit.😘 On that level I'd say this one passes the test.
    I look forward to seeing a video of you testing them. That can be a challenge in the winter (do you get winter in Atlanta?). I'm in Bozeman Montana and it's 10 degrees F and snowing right now. 🥶 Getting a shelter up and a fire going is a top priority in those conditions. The Henry US kit would actually give you a decent shot at making it through the night here. When you do test whatever you're going to test, be safe and make sure you have a good backup plan. We all want you to stick around make more videos.😉

    I'm not "badmouthing" anything or anybody. Contents checks are nice. But if you want me to believe that something works, SHOW ME *YOU* Someplace..WAY....OUT... THERE.... *Using this kit* . I don't buy into how good something looks spread out on a tabletop in a nice warm room someplace. I'm impressed by how well something functions overall when your life (or someone else's) could be on the line in a REAL Emergency situation. This kit just strikes me as something made for "showroom" use and salesmanship. There is another part to surviving in any situation. How well you can use what you have, and how familiar you are with what you have. This Kit, just from what I see, is weak on two things. 1) useable instructions for anyone who has never used a survival kit and 2) Shelter just to start off. This is a kit you buy to get bits and bobs that you use to make YOUR OWN Kit that is a step up from this. I think if you carry just what I see here, you're going to wind up wishing you had another tin about this size with a whole lot more in it, starting with something that keeps the nasty weather off of you. The real question here is simple. Is this nice box of bits and bobs worth $125, or could you take the same money to a combination of places and put together your own kit that is more complete, without a profit motive tacked onto the price?

      Money would be of no use in a situation that kit is obviously meant for.
      That kit has many flaws, way to many for the cost, but a lack of money isn't one of them. You can't eat money nor can you use it to buy food out in a situation where survival depends on the types of items a kit like this contains. Obviously being offered by a manufacturer of hunting rifles this kit is geared to folks likely to be in hunting situation where they become lost or injured so in that case money would be the most useless item in the kit!

      "Pricy side"? It's outrageous. I could put together something like this (minus the tin) from my hunting pack, and I can assure you it didn't total over 100 bucks. It is also pretty under equipped for real survival.

      That's what I keep telling them. Only Fools and people who don't know what they're doing purchase these kind of kits. Because if you actually know how to use the stuff you can buy the stuff a lot cheaper yourself. But if you don't know how to use the stuff it's no good anyway. This is just a way for people to fail with more confidence. Unfortunately failure often means death in these types of situations. But I guess that's part of natural selection 2. Don't worry everybody I have it covered I have a little tin box I paid way too much money for that will save me... I'm assuming these people are Democrats because they show the same sloppiness and lack of understanding and blind trust to hucksters. People that buy these also buy little metal rods that clip onto their baseball caps to wear as lightning rods it has a little copper wire probably running to their shoe

      yeah, those plastic blankets are junk if there is any wind at all the movement of air will suck out all of your body heat and you will die... makes a good cover to keep the rain/snow off of you. thats about it... unless it just makes your body easier to find cause its shiny.

      Even professionals can't survive more than 87 days by themselves, just watch the survival show Alone and you'll find out, the max anyone has lasted was 87 days, while he won he didn't have much time left before he would died, others that lost did so by injury, losing too much weight, loneliness, or illness. The guy that lasted the longest, those 87 days, he had lost 70 pounds from his original 223 pounds, another 25 pounds and he would have damaged his kidneys, heart, etc from starvation and eventually would have died.

      @@Rekmeyata you're wrong. There are plenty of people that has lived in the woods almost their whole life without coming out. You just don't know about them because they want nothing to do with the rest of us. A girl grew up in Russia in the woods and her entire family died when she was around 30-40. She lived by herself out there for about 30+ years.

      @@KeweenawPatriot And then you find out that those people got help from others or stole what they needed from others. You don't have to believe me, just watch the show ALONE on TH-cam or on the History channel, the record is 87 days and that contestant lost 70 pounds during that time which was a third of his body weight. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alone_(TV_series) And these contestants have vast experience with survival, they're not people like you or me who have limited knowledge of survival. So you tell me how trained survivalists can't last long yet some girl lives in the forest for 30 years with no experience in survival prior to choosing to living in the forest survives for over 30 years.

    Great channel. VIDEO IDEA. A suggestion.... I see a lot of the same or very similar equipment in many of the kits. Would like to see a video of the practicality and usage of some of these items. And do some of these CHEAP survival items actually work. Will they break after one use or not even do the task it was intended. Example ov video...
    Wetting compact towels.
    Using signal mirrors.
    Filter water.
    Purify water.
    Use a cheap wire saw.
    Very simple stuff... but very useful if you have never played with this stuff... seams like common sense. But common sense does not always exist when you are in a survival situation. I attended navy SERE and Airforce advance SERE. Much of the stuff seams simple .... but if you have never done it before..... that one thing could make a big difference if the time comes. I was hypothermic and frostbiten in school. When hypothermia sets in..... the smallest things become impossible. Sorry prolly TMI. Keep up the good work.
