    Whenever you go out into nature, find a way to strap the kit to you so you can’t get separated from it. So many of the survival stories I’ve heard have common themes. Like their boat turned over and literally everything they had ended up lost in the water. Or they had to make a quick run away from camp, and they ended up leaving everything behind. And they couldn’t find their way back to the camp.

    This kit has more tools than my wood-working shop used to have in the beginning. Who's carrying all this load in the forest? You're only short a cement mixer and maybe a diesel generator and you're ready to go and build a house.

      This kit has an amazing amount of junk in it that serves zero purpose. Spear heads? Arrow heads? Where it he bow? Does he really believe he's going to run down some deer or pig and Rambo it for dinner ROFL!! 3 Sharpeners wtf?!?! 95% of these kit videos is crap guy pack in a bag with wild illusions of survival but almost none of them show any of the gear has use. They wouldn't last a day in survival class with this Walmart collection, but Amazon is sure happy to see them buying this crap lol.

    I have literally watched hundreds of these - and BY FAR this is the BEST basic survival kit there is. I am genuinely impressed. Some folks in the comments have made a few good suggestions of stuff you could add, and my only thought would be a separate iFAK (molle attached to the rear) but other than that I think I will be clicking on each of the links you have posted for stuff I do not yet have and will be copying this set-up. Thank you for taking the time to share this with us.

      Thanks! I carry an Anker powercore 2000 in my main pack, however I think you are right that it would be nice to have a smaller powerbank in the kit. In the past couple years I think its easier to find one that could work also as they make some that are rather slim. Grappling hook is definitely not needed but its fun to include anyways haha.

    That is a truly amazing kit!
    Great to see a pencil sharpener there! I also like your choice of cutting tools. Not sure I'd include those heavy tools - I'd probably substitute for a Leatherman and/or Victorinox.
    I might have missed it or forgot, but I would never have a kit like this without a lighter. In fact, I'd always carry one on me, one in the kit and one loose in my pack, and in my vehicle.

      Thanks! The main reason I have individual tools rather than a multitool is that I have always hated actually using multitools. Iv found multitools to be able to do a bunch of different tasks but non of them very well.

      @@thenextarcher Just shows how different we can be hey? I absolutely love my SAKs and Leatherman. and I use them a helluva lot. I even sent my Leatherman in for a service and it came back with all damaged parts replaced and looking spanking new. And it did not cost me a cent!
      Just a little story: a guy I met some years ago owns a small handyman company, with a few vans for his staff. On hiring, every employee is given that big Leatherman, and is required to carry it all the time. According to him the time saved in searching for tools makes up for the cost very quickly.

    • @thenextarcher
      @thenextarcher  ปีที่แล้ว

      I have a cheap combination whistle/compass on the outside, however a decent compass I have left out. There is to much metal in the kit itself and a compass would get damaged. I keep a compass in my backpack where it won't get broken.

    • @bmbpdk
      @bmbpdk ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thenextarcher Arh ok.
      Button compass are useless and are not worth the space or weight, they are to prone to failure, they stick and arent precise.
      You are better off using the sun vs. time and the stars.
      Also, a compass should ALWAYS be on your person, the reason is that you cloth will never go through the same handling as your backpack, your cloth will always be safer than your "external" gear.
      And if you have to run away from something and/or ditch your bag, you will always have a proper navigation tool on your body.
      Metal in the back should not be a problem if you use the compass correctly; always use a compass with a stretch arm and any proper compass, made by a compass manufacture (Silva and Suunto for example) will be precise.
      Why you chose to have rachets and wrenches but no proper compass i simply dont understand.
      But hey, its your bag and you can pack it as you want.

    Thanks for the excellent video. There is some great kit in your bag.
    Yet can I make a suggestion. There is a natural tendency - and no one is guiltier of this that I - to, magpie-like, acquire more and more "essential" kit. By the end you have so much kit that carrying it could give your a hernia.
    he cause of this problem is threefold. Firstly, it is caused by picking up good ideas from others whose needs might well be different from yours or, more likely, they have the same magpie habit you do. Secondly, the maxim "it's better to have it and not need it than need it than not have it." This seems good advice but, when you reflect, would necessitate you carrying around the weight of a truck. Thirdly, you have acquired this precious lovely, often for a pretty penny, and therefore it pains you to discard it and admit that it was not really "essential" at all.
    I hasten to add that I write this without an iota of smugness. I have been there myself. I still am "there" to some degree.
    So what to do? What I do is an audit and a brutal one. If I have not used the item within six months it gets shipped out. What I carry on me is then what I actually use, as opposed - save for the zombie apocalypse - what I might use. The audit also helps remind you of what you have and where you have it. This is sometime just as important as having it in the first place!
    What would really interest me is a video by somebody who showed me what they bought and then chose to leave OUT of their bag.
    PS Tabasco sauce. The SAS would give you a thumbs up for that!!

      Thanks for the feedback! I try to consistently improve on my kit and I actually recorded this video twice because after the first recording I decided to get rid of a couple items I would never use. If you compare what I currently have in my kit vs what I had in 2017 you will see a huge difference th-cam.com/video/4gJJl1CBD_Q/w-d-xo.html .
      Your idea of items that Iv bought and no longer keep in the kit is a great. I might record a video like that as I definately have a ton of items Iv bought and then excluded due to various reasons.

    Nice. So many blades (and sharpeners) - you'll be fine if the zombie's come. That is the kit I would start with to build my specific kit for the trip I was going on. I love the idea of the pencil sharpener for making tinder. Disposable sunnies are also really cool - I was expecting you to say they were in shade #5 and you had something for brazing carbide tips on your telescopic sword ;) I have a little dry box of salt, pepper and chili flakes as well as a foil packet of chicken soup - you can't beat good morale. I have a combined sewing/fishing kit. Did I see a compass in that set - nice to know which way to go if you are in a whiteout/overcast, etc. I take a small hexamine tablet fragment which is great for getting a fire going under adverse conditions - love that little titanium stove!

    nice kit, but you should get the SOL foil blanket because those thin foil ones rip really easily, it's only 1 mm thick, and if you use the foil blanket 99.9% of the time, it will rip with one good strong wind. I have used at least two dozen rescue blankets SOL was #1 for me. i would use a sheet "at least 10 mm thick for your drop cloth and put two more large water bags. As for the fire steel, there are harder and softer Fire Steels which is why your sticker will skip on harder rods. You should also have a good compass like a Suunto, you can get one as cheap as $15-$20. but do not get the military one.

    Lots of great gear! Now get out in the woods and use it! You will quickly learn what is and isn't necessary to carry. Some of your choices are a little too gimmicky for me, and I do not like extra weight that's not necessary. When I'm out on the land I have no real use for wrenches, pliers or bit drivers, at least not that my Leatherman won't handle. My large PSK weighs just a few grams over two pounds and rides comfortably on my belt. I would bet that yours weighs five pounds or more. But hey, the important thing is to get out there and have fun gaining and sharpening your skills. Good luck!

    • @thenextarcher
      @thenextarcher  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! Great guess on the weight as it does weigh 5 pounds exactly. I fully agree that this kit could be slimmed down and remove many unnecessary items. Some of the more gimmicky items (such as a fire piston) are ones that people like to try out when I go camping in groups. If I am going to be hiking away I tend to leave this kit behind at a basecamp and bring a much smaller group of items.

Ditch Out, carry nothing, get away as far and as fast as possible. Interesting that it suggests making The Spear, proven effective for Centuries.

    Yeah, those Light My Fire ferro rods.... Every one I have ever had is just a MESS to use. I have tried storing them every which way and they all just end up completely chalky/disintegrated. I can't use them without having to wash up bigtime. I have taken to using those cheap Coghlan's Waterproof Flint Strikers. They of course are not even in the same ballpark when it comes to ferro rods, but at least they don't fall apart in my hands.
    This was a great video. Lot's of cool ideas.

      I agree. The light my fire rods create some great sparks but I am not a fan of them disintegrating in my kit. I also own a copy of the Exotac nanostriker which is an enclosed ferro rod, it doesn't create as good of sparks but at least doesn't make a mess.

    Really nice gadgets but it's a survival kit and EDC tinkerer pouch smashed together for no reason.
    You rarely ever need a water filter while working on the computer case bolts but it's even more rare that you need a ratchet in the nature.
    Maybe it's nice as a hobby kit for a traveling techie hiker person. You even have the knife that could be stripped of it's blade so that the airport security would be happy to know that you won't be carving your name on a seat! You just have to find the excuse for bringing the set of arrowheads and a fucking pickaxe head. I personally can't think of any.

    Not even gonna watch it because there's no point…….
    You don’t “play” Survivorman, that’s not how it works. True survival is an “emergency outdoors wilderness situation” where you didn’t set out to go play-pretend where you have this cool kit ready to go.
    First of it’s just the size of it, and its WAY too big, you’ve already crossed the SIZE line. Let me explain why you have it all wrong, it usually happens like this in the real world - you’re out for the day or a week or whatever , canoe tripping, or a mountain bike tour, or a backpacking trip or something OTHER than going to go pretend you’re Grizzly Adams in the woods.
    1. You’re out for the day or a few days or a week or whatever for a thing in the outdoors.
    Then before you know it or you’re prepared for it, something bad happens …… you’re outdoors recreating and then Hey Presto all your gear is gone.
    The canoe dumped or you lost it, or you dropped the pack when running from a bear, or it fell off the bike and you lost it.
    Bottom line is all of your stuff is gone.
    2. You lose all your gear or camping supplies because of an accident/incident.
    That’s what creates the emergency, that loss !! After all if you have ALL of your gear or your backpack or whatever, and something happens, its bad, but its not major or life threating from exposure for example. If you have all your stuff, or your backpack, or a car full of gear then yes, it’s a problem and you might be stuck or even lost or maybe you got injured - but with all your usual stuff - that’s basically just a forced extended-trip while you wait for rescue because you were smart enough to tell someone your plans.
    3. If you have all your equipment not much changes …….
    So now you’re in the outdoors and all you have its what’s on your person or what’s in your pockets, that’s where it gets real. You’re standing there in the outdoors with nothing - now it’s a matter of skill time. What can you do, just as you with no gear? That’s what creates the true “emergency outdoors wilderness situation” it wasn’t planned and you don’t have any stuff.
    Now the trendy survival bag, like you made here and that I’ve now seem 70+ people make and yap about on You Tube. Except its mostly for views and they’ll NEVER actually use it. It’s a way to jump on the survival bandwagon and make easy content to get views and thus MONEY!
    Most of the kits I see are not realistic or practical at all and neither is yours. It’s not a backpack of camping gear, or a pile of camping equipment in a canoe for trip, it’s just a bag of stuff. Mostly it’s entirely the wrong size !!! You’d never have that in your pocket in a coat or Goretex rain jacket with you on a day hike or camping if you were outdoors doing XYZ thing.
    Survival kits look cool ad god knows they’re trendy but then so does your backpack with all the camping gear in it. Or the canoe with all the stuff in the boat for a river trip. Or your bike and panniers on the bike for a 300 mile trial ride.
    4. A survival kit is always on your person - you carry it all the time.
    A survival kit is the thing you have on your person AFTER you lose your gear ………………..
    You need a small 5 x 7 or altoids size tin of “stuff” that sits in your jacket pocket forever and you never look at it or use it till that emergency happens THAT is what a survival kit is for - you make your life a bit easier while you wait the average 1-3 days to get recused.
    Your cute bag of stuff is great if you wanna go play in the woods and pretend you’re Survivorman for the day instead of going outdoors and actually doing legitimate recreational activates !
    Can I suggest:
    Fishing Canoeing Backpacking Day Hiking Hunting Mtn Biking Road Tripping Jogging Climbing
    Orienteering Kayaking Geo-Caching Ice Fishing X-Country Skiing Rafting Caving
    Basically anything besides sitting around on You Tube making videos for a kit of something you never use or do because you don’t go outdoors and actually DO things.
    Lastly don’t confuse going outside deliberately trying to play woodsman or pretending its Walden Pond all over again - that’s not survival. That stuff is called “wilderness living” and its not the same thing as a but it does use the same skills and gear. Besides you can’t run away and live in the woods unless you buy the land and pay land tax on it.
    Also don’t confuse Survival or a proper pocket size survival kit with the idiots who never GO outside, but are ready to survive with their bibles, guns, and god on their side while they wait for: the big one to drop, the super quake, the EMP bomb, the meteor to hit earth, or the Ruskies to invade, that’s not realistic either ….. much like your kit.

    This should be titled "How to Make a Really Heavy, Bulky Survival Kit, With Useless Items and Wasted Space, by Someone With No Real World Bushcrafting or Survival Experience."
    That's a TERRIBLE kit, with a few useful items. You will never convince me you have any real world experience or formal survival training with that kit. There are some very useful items in it, including some I've never seen. There are also some useful items that have much better options available. And, there's JUNK in there that take up space you could use for other things or just adds unnecessary weight and bulk.
    The only way that kit is useful is a a vehicle kit, and if it's a vehicle kit, there's several changes that could - or should - be made.

    You want to tell me that your ferrocerium rod once dissolved? An assortment of rare earths plus iron doesnt simply dissolved in a fluid. Iron has a melting point of 1200-1300 degrees Celsius and the only other Method is Hydrochloric acid, and I highly doubt that you store your fire steel in that...

    • @thenextarcher
      @thenextarcher  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Ferro rods are designed to rapidly oxide resulting in sparks. These same oxides + iron make ferro rods corrode when exposed to moisture slowly turning them into dust. If you search ferro rod corrosion you can see many examples of this happening.

    Couple of questions!
    1) what's the weight?
    2) if you know, what's the cost of the whole kit?
    * you could market this kit to high end users. You obviously have a skill set of putting these things all together. Most kits you see are a bunch of china crap thrown together. Great presentation!

    • @thenextarcher
      @thenextarcher  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Weight is just at 5 pounds.
      I do not know the exact cost of the kit as I have built it up over the past 9 years. Almost all of the items are available on Amazon but would be pretty expensive to replicate. I suggest that people use the ideas that I had to create their own kit as their needs/wants will be different than mine.
      Rather than making kits to sell I do provide links to the individual products that I could find on amazon and I earn an affiliate commission on any sales (normally 3%).

    I would change your altoid can for more Medical gear. Mole skin, bandaids or gauze. Maybe add some Kevlar small strand as you have a ton of spear and attachments that may require strong lightweight rope. Upgrade your Flashlight to maybe a Pheonix PD36R! and only pack 1. (It will be the only flashlight you ever carry i guarantee it!} With the extra room you can stash a pack of cards for those lonely moments, or moments if your good to make some money! And where is your MRE!
