Lockstin: british colonialism

@@empireyouth5791 And cause it.
For edification purposes:
The plural of "octopus" is technically one of the following: Octopuses, Octopi, or Octopodes.
Octopuses makes sense, because that's how we pluralize words that end in -s in English. Then there are a number of other people think Octopi is the proper pluralization because of other words with Latin bases turning -us into a -i. However, Octopus isn't actually a Latin word, but a Latinized version of the Greek word, oktopous. And, in Greek, -us becomes -odes.
Thus, there are three officially recognized ways of pluralizing octopus. My personal preference is "Octopodes," because it sounds cool and then I can bring out this random fact.
Domriso Hey Vsauce, Michael here
I heard it called octopoles (ok-top-oh-lees)
Unless you're a sceincetist then it's octopuses.
Also fishes is used for when there are multiple speices.
Something similar happens with the Platypus - they may be referred to as Platypuses, Platypi, or Platypodes. Though some people also refer to them as Watermoles, Duckbills, Duckmoles or Beaverducks. Phineas and Ferb didn't shed much light into the discussion even though one of the main characters in the show was a Platypus: basically, it was either "Platypus don't do much" or "They are the only mammals to lay eggs" (said no Echidna ever)...
Yeah, we have a Fish turning into an Octopod

Crabrawler not being a Water-Type always made sense to me, I mean, it’s a coconut crab. Those are terrestrial.
But I could never figure out Grapploct. I guess it’s just a case of “it doesn’t have to be Water-Type to live in the sea?”
If it is, then I like that, allows for more Type diversity! Also explains why Pincurchin isn’t a Water-Type.
yeah! and electross too
@@sammackenberg4666 Elecktross is wierd because you never encounter it or it's prevos in water
Both Pincurchin and Grapploct would have been more diverse as dual water types, though. There are dozens of mono-electric and mono-fighting types, but only a small handful of Water/Electric and Water/Fighting types. And the latter type combo isn't even in Sword and Shield at all.
It'd be like if they gave every Pokemon on land without a second type Ground, Grass, or Normal. Not every Pokemon found in grass is Grass-type. Not every Pokemon found in caves are Rock-types. SO many Pokemon are found in water that it creates a serious imbalance of typings if you just call every Pokemon design found in water a Water-type, not to mention it puts certain limits on design space, and what Pokemon of non-Water typings are "allowed" to look like.
Take Malamar for instance. If it HAD to be Water-type because it's a squid, then you've got two options - either ditch the Dark/Psychic typing....or make it not a squid. But why? That's a very arbitrary restriction to have on imaginary creature design. Instead I like to think of it as more that the water aspect is implied, but Pokemon don't have three types in the games, so we only get two. But that does leave the issue of mono-types...
I agree that mono-Fighting is a relatively boring and even strange choice, in terms of _typing._ BUT, I'd argue that so many mono-Fighting Pokemon are just punchy land bois, that it doesn't hurt to give a little creature diversity. In fact, I usually don't care for a Fighting type because muscley bipedal creatures that win mostly by physical force don't really do it for me. But I might actually consider having an Octopus on my team. Pinurchin falls into a similar category. When a lot of designs for Electric-types have already been done....it's just something different to add to the roster. It's not like they're going to just stop making mono-Electric Pokemon, so they might as well expand their creative options when they do.
@@librathebeautifulwarmonk1283 I always imagined it as an eel which lives in sewers or something.
Imagine being a scuba diver in the Pokémon world and seeing Grapploct and Golisopod Fighing to the death, where the loser becomes the winner’s dinner, in a sunken ship. It would be so badass and metal as hell
the idea of just walking around the beach in the evening and then suddenly a Grapploct comes charring at you to fight you is really scary and funny at the same time

@@forestcitymappingandpjsgac5471 prejudices? ^^
@@forestcitymappingandpjsgac5471 No, it's just the second Reich and it wanted to contest British hegemony
And btw, at this time basically nobody liked Britain and the way it operated internationally. When the French government made an alliance with it it sparked an outrage within the population. Britain had qui tense relations with America and Russia for the better part of the XIXth century (why do you think Russia sold Alaska to the US ? They knew that they couldn't protect it themselves and would rather see it under American leadership than see it fall to the British). So the fact that it was anti British doesn't equate to it being nazi propaganda, much of Europe at the time wasn't very fond of the British (and this list extends to many parts of the world as well) so it isn't an anomaly, if anything the weird thing would be to find a non British source that isn't critical of the UK

To quote Fawful’s Minion Grappleoct is basically “what if an octopus didn’t wanna octopus?”

Me: It’s Pokémon logic. Lugia isn’t water type too...
Da Banny Gaming variety is the spice of pokelife.
Lugia levitates over water
The in game example for that is Lugia resides under the water as a dampener to it's immense power, so perhaps we can assume Lugia originally was not water based as I believe the in game legend was in Johto the two towers of Ecruteak city was home to Lugia and Ho-oh before the fire. So Ho-Oh stayed above and Lugia went below.
@@scapegoatcomics6168 Lugia is always described as a lord over water though. He wouldn't be a water type because he lives in water, but for his Mastery over it and his connection to it. More meta wise, he's probably Psychic because Water would make him strong against Ho-Oh.
@@infernaldisdain8051 whilst lugia has been named the beast of the sea its hydrokinesis is down in part to its God level psychic abilities. Meta reasons you may be right as its match up with lugia would be one sided (unless they did what they did with groundon and kyogre). But there is in game logic as to why lugia is psychic flying as opposed to psychic water.
Me: Grapploct looks amazing
Me after seeing that Grapploct neck opens and that is his mouth: .... Oh god, why?
Seriously his mouth should have been like that of a Drifblim, located under his yellow mask pattern on face. That would be perfect. But nope, they had to make him open his neck to make him look stupid.
I am the same exact way. It would be probably my favorite Pokemon design of Gen 8 if not for the neck mouth... But that title is to my favorite Pokemon: Obstagoon so...
Grapploct needs a big mouth so he can eat the cheese after he smells it. LOL
I think it’s because he’s an octopus, the part is near the center of its body and appears sharp, and real octopodes have beaks in the center of their body, so I that may be why it’s like that.
@@blackmantis1511 But it's still a terrible design choice... If that were the case, his mouth may as well be where his belt is. I understand why that could be the reason, but it just ruins it for me.
Grapploct's mouth should be on his underside, like a real Octopus. Clobbopus has it!

Another fun potential inspiration behind Clobbopus's Fighting type and it having boxing gloves could be a reference to the fact that octopuses have been known to randomly punch fish with their tentacles. And apparently it's believed they do this for no reason other than being out of pure spite. 😂
I’m going to be honest. I screamed when I saw Grapploct crawling towards me...
Not sure if you made this because of my suggestion or were already working on it when you brought up in another video the oddness of Grapploct not being water type, but I'm glad you did it either way. It was an interesting video. Grapploct is one of my favorite Gen8 designs.
That said, while the video was interesting and there is some reasoning there... I still think it should have been part water. It's a more unique type, and I don't think any of it's inspirations would fit less if it was part Water. Ah well.
Got anything on why Pincurchin isn't water type?
You should do a video on why only galarian variants get a new evolution. my thoughts are that it is because of the power of the wishing stones that allow pokemon to dmax and gmax. since rose did say they have more power than you can imagine
Pretty cool stuff about Octopi.
