- Of all the morally questionable Assassins throughout Assassin's Creed, I've always found Pierre Bellec from Assassin's Creed Unity to be one of the most interesting. There's a debate to be had both in the Assassin's Creed community and by the actual modern day assassins in universe about whether or not Pierre Bellec's actions were justified. So that's what I'm here to discuss in this video...

I would've liked to have seen a meeting between Bellec and Connor; he mentioned Connor rebuilding the American colonies, yet probably didn't know that Connor himself was similar to Arno in that he didn't outright hate the Templars and thought it was possible for them to coexist.

True, but Shay would be too old for a fight. By the time of Dead Kings he would be 63-64, but then again, Germain was 68 when he fought Arno. He could potentially be the Grand Master of the American Rite.

According to Assassin’s Creed fandom Bellec was actually a veteran of the Seven Years’ War, who witnessed the Great Templar purge of the Assassins from 1757-1763 (the one that was aided by Shay’s destruction of the Colonial Brotherhood). Which is likely why he hates Templars with a burning passion. Also, the Parisian Brotherhood (Except Mirabeu and Bellec) were complete assholes, especially toward Arno

I think it was justified for the Parisian Brotherhood to dislike Arno. He constantly refused to return to them after each assigned mission. It is still crazy that they didn't kick him out after assassinating Lafreniere, which he did after listening to a dude he had never met before. Some people say Connor in AC3 trusts people way too fast, but Arno is even worse.

To be fair to Arno, he was manipulated by Germain into thinking Lafreniere was an enemy. While Arno did act on his own constantly, you can’t really blame him for doing so considering the Parisian Brotherhood constantly had their heads up their asses during the game and didn’t do jack shit
@@captainprice2671 They're French of course they had their heads up there and weren't doing anything... Jokes aside, it's not that they weren't doing anything. It's that they were too busy to deal with Arno's love life. It's the French Revolution. The Parisian Brotherhood had their hands full. I don't blame the Brotherhood for not going on a wild goose chase while there's so many other things to prioritize compared to some conspiracy theory about their enemies who they have a truce with. While Bellec and Arno were in conflict about how to deal with the Templars, their mentor was actually dealing with the French Revolution and the challenges the Assassins were facing due to it. Now was just not the time to look for a fight with the Templars.
@@captainprice2671 same man, arbo was the only one in the brotherhood of Paris who was concerned about the German and what he represented against freedom during the French revolution while the creed or rather the council was only concerned with maintaining a position of power in the revolution and the brotherhood and they expelled Arno forever questioning the methods and trying to find the best way to deal with the real threat, bellec is the pure representation of the achilles creed and just seeing someone with a templar cross means killing first and asking questions later, the only one there that i'm sure altair would have pride is arno, the brotherhood of paris is the same brotherhood before the altair.
Pierre was also french-canadian, becoming an assassin in the north american colonies, probably trained by Achilles and company (who also had a very extremist view on the assassin´s creed, and probably brainwashed pierre into this way of thinking) and escaped the templar´s purge led by Haytham and his templars. so that may explain his radical position in the assassin-templar war.

The Assassins vs Templars war is a war where no one side is correct. The main antagonist of the first game of the series is not a templar, but the mentor of the assassin brotherhood. Both sides have morally good people and morally bad people just like any real life war.
A mentor whos mind was corrupted by the apple of eden . Its not as black and white as one good one bad or even none are bad it depends on what you belief. Should humanity be indoctrinated persecuted and controlled in order to gain peace and order or should we be free to find our own way . Id go with the latter

@@the_epileptic_gamer1190 Robert literally says he’s the 10th templar in AC1. His journal has much evidence supporting the fact. His ideology is that of a templar. You can spot him dodging your questions many times in AC1 (if you played it) to avoid exposing himself. He barely ever disclosed any truth of the templars and lied to altair about what they wanted. The entire game is him setting things into motion so he can use the apple. The apple just pushed him over the edge

I'm saying this right now... We need a video about Assassin's Creed 1's antagonist, Al Mualim, and how influential he was to the series. In most videos I've seen talking about AC main villains like Rodrigo, Cesare, Haytham, etc., we never hear anything about the franchise's first villain, and that's odd.
100% agree. I still like Al Mualim, even if he was a traitor lol. He's an intriguing character, I remember there was even some debate if he was just blind on one eye or actually a Sage, because he could handle the Apple of Eden so well for so long, and he could confound his opponents like a wizard. He seemed very wise and powerful, and mysterious
It's easy to understand Bellec's hatred for the Templars because he had to flee the American colonies after Shay destroyed the Brotherhood.
And for all we know a young Bellec might have crossed paths with Shay, because Shay was storming French forts and encampments during the French and Indian War, and Bellec was an enlisted soldier with the French colonials.
So Shay's turn against the assassins would have been known to him as a huge betrayal. Then his own pupil, Arno's father got killed, again by Shay. Of course he didn't seem to know that, but the Templars had been a thorn on his side since the French and Indian War so he' never consider a truce.
Yeah , he is a really good character.
But I bet that if AC Unity was finished as intended with the intended story , than I think we would have talked about every character of this game very differently and more positively.

Oddly enough I am actually working on a series of assassins creed stories with a friend of mine and one of them involves a tale of a period of peace between the Assassins and Templars via two brothers who are the Mentor and Grand Master of the American Brotherhood and Rite respectively in the tail end of Wild West era.
It’s a future project called AC: Redemption and I’m personally really excited about doing it myself since exploring a truce period between the factions was always interesting to me

One thing I know when seeing this kind of character is that seeing the things he saw as an assassin can change a person good or bad. Pierre Bellec once said he saw the Templars destroy an entire town just to find one assassin. I’m beginning to wonder if he was the Assassin who was targeted. Coulda mess him up for life witnessing that event, leading him to his choice of “new assassin management.”
Interesting idea, that the target might've been him, that would explain his extreme views. We do see Templars don't care about the common people who get in their way... Cesare bombards Monteriggioni, that guy in AC1 in Damascus poisoned his guests at his party, in AC3 the Templars instigated the Boston massacre, it's a theme with the Templars.

Bellec is kind of like Jet from Avatar The Last Airbender. Bellec didn’t trust the Templars and Jet didn’t trust the Fire Nation and both went to extreme lengths moving forward.

In the game I always hated the way the French Brotherhood Council were. They just rubbed me the wrong way. Sure Arno was brash and arrogant but honestly if they should have expected this because he was fuelled by Revenge. They finally strip him of his rank and cast him out. When Arno finally rejoins the Brotherhood I think it’s when all of them are dead and the French Brotherhood needed him.

The Levantine Templars were not corrupted. Were their methods questionable, yes but I would not call them corrupt. Even Altair said that their goals were noble.

I think he become obsessed with the brotherhood and become the very person he would hate I think it was the loss of his people that made him that way but I don't think any action purely based on emotions is good .

Definitely should’ve been the final boss, where I think he should’ve been the one helping Arno hunt down other Templars when he got pushed out, lying to him, and working with him and Elise. Also, instead of trying to frame a Elise for the mentors murder he should’ve framed Rui for the murder. then finally at the end where the big blast happens and Arno thinks Elise is dead, but she survives and go to leave but she’s suddenly shot in the back, killing her, as bellic demands for the sword of Eden and tries to get Arno to join him. Arno in a rage takes the sword and uses it power and fights and finally kills bellic in a few fight sequences and sees the truth that he killed the mentor as well
Not exactly related to the vid, but the missed potential in ac unity is insane, imagine if the parkour system had the that same style and flare whule still having the freedom and control of the ezio games, and the smothness of the kenway games, and so many more things coudve been way better, but ubisoft just had to be ubisoft.
Imagine if we actually got to see Arno rejoin the brotherhood and reach the master assassin rank instead of finishing the game and his robes just….appear in your inventory.

I will always remember Pierre Bellec. Not just because of his classy attitude but for him showing what nationalism can do to you if you neglect people Infront of you. I don't believe that he should've killed the Mentor of that time as it would cause chaos in the leadership not peace. Look at other characters like Mordo from Doctor Strange or Kassegowasse from AC Rouge. These charcters where so stuck on tradition and hatred for adaptation and growth that it turned one evil (Mordo) and got the other killed (Kassegowasse). A pattern anyone?
I have an idea (irrelevant to Unity). What if the bright tone of Syndicate is ‘caused’ by the young protagonists who want to change London for the better. Where as in the DLC (apart from the fact that it fits a more accurate tone of London etc) the protagonists are older and they struggle to achieve their goal. But one thing is for sure, it looks stunning (both game and DLC)
Thank you for this video, since I haven't played this game in a while and I didn't really look in too deeply I didn't really understand Bellec's motives but this video helped a lot to see his view point. I def have to replay this game again and it's most def an underrated AC game

I think callin Bellec is Nationalist is somewhat off. Nationalism is more of putting the priority of your country or group above others. I would call him a Jingoist. Jingoism is actively destroying other groups for your’s to succeed. Jingoism is just more radical and aggressive.
You forgot his other two examples. Monteriggioni was destroyed because Ezio tried to kill Borgia. I'm not saying it wouldn't have happened even if he got killed, but Cesare could've destroyed the town at any point if he new a dangerous assassin lived there. Or two. Actually, an entire family.
And Achilles was a tough mentor who didn't see himself in the wrong. He was failed by Shay, one of his bretheren and inadvertedly made a monster.

I can understand Bellec's reasonings, but I do truly believe that peace could have been found within the story of Unity as I feel that Germain was really the only Templar in Unity who believed in the cause, maybe with the exception of Marie Levesque and possibly Louis-michel Le Peletier, but even then I feel that they agreed with Germain perhaps out of fear due to how much power he had. But others such as Sivert, Le Roi des Thunes, Rouille, and La Touché were more following Germain for personal gain. Hell, La Touché seemed to not even believe in the cause, so if Germain was killed either before the events of the game or even if Arno acted brashly and killed him when he first met the man, I do believe that the others would scatter or fall in line behind Élise, which then I feel a more lasting peace would have happened, sure, maybe not forever but perhaps as long as Élise and Arno lived and that's if Bellec had still killed Mirabeau. I think if Bellec had gone rogue, he'd have been a huge asset to the brotherhood, and, of course, Arno would likely not have been exiled from the brotherhood.
Also, I've been curious about this: Did Arno get reinstated into the brotherhood, or did he too sort of become a rogue assassin, but rather than against the brotherhood, helped them. I'm not familiar with the rules of exiled assassins.

Bellec for me was like an Assassin version of Germain. Both wanted to revive the former glory that was lost from their respective orders. Both are willing to go the extra mile to purge the other.
A note, just because he's an assassin mentor, or any mentor doesn't mean he's good
The thing is Pier escaped the colonial purge which is bad. Because the colonial brotherhood was just infested by Altiar, Aboss, and Macandall's teachings. Pier's own words "We're not an order, we're an army." The problem with that is that an army has no creed, it just fights, kills, and conquers without considering the consequences or the big picture about why they fight. It's why in the actual history books they were sent out to die against the Mongols and if any survived got disbanded by the nations and authorities of the known world same with the templars. It's the reason why Shay's plight attracted the Templars. Why Altiar ordering the strike on the Templars in Paris eventually resulted in his own order's demise by reigniting war with the Templars in the first place. Why Abass and Macadal corrupted the Assassins. And why Macandal/ two whole brotherhoods fed by his teachings ended with a mass violation of all three tenets of the creed. It's like Jay Garek said, "Without limits we become villains." And the creed is an order's limit. It's why an army has commands rather than tenants. Tenants keep people on the straight and narrow, for an army that's detrimental. As by necessity you must be prepared to eventually sacrifice, disregard, and let go of everything for victory. Even the innocent, stealth, and safety of one's comrades. Which goes against the Creed.

Well, it was established before in AC3 that every truth the Assassins and Templars have had has always been temporary with Unity showing an example as to why that is. They're just too different. They both want peace but the how, the journey and methods to it, are very opposites.

Dude he was right. The Templars principles clash hard against the Assassins principles. That alone is enough to be fire and water. The Templars literally want to take the power off people, no matter if they are plebs or royalty, because "they know better". The Assassins just disagree and they fight, not because they hate the men behind the masks but because eachother threatens the others way of life.
Arno was just too busy with his own feelings towards Elise and her father to think about the damn principles held by both creeds. It really surprises me how a leader of the Assassins can agree on helping a Templar to have her revenge, even if it is against other Templars. My enemies enemy is not always a friend. In this case, the Assassins had an extreme weak leadership to even consider a proposition with the Templars.
One could say that Altairs wife was a Templar, and they would be right. She "was" a Templar. We can clearly see she went through a whole process of abandoning them Templars principles and embracing the Assassins creed.
In hindsight, I personally think any truce between Templars and Assassins is due to a very weak minded leadership, because as long as both creeds hold their principles, they cannot be friends and even more, they will fight until one or the other are completely destroyed. That would be the ideal process anyway. But I really like how the writers achieved this "grey" zone in the morality, just enough to get players siding with one creed or the other.

Bellec, much like the rest of the French Brotherhood, are traditionalists. If it meant killing the mentor to frame a templar to take care of a perceived threat, Bellec would have done it. What separates him from the rest is that he has an extremist almost religious level of devotion to the brotherhood even by traditionalist standards.

The problem with Bellec, like every character in this game, is that they lack any real depth and characterisation making them all more or less macchiettes. Consequently, it is complex to speculate on the basis of nothing, especially if the story of game is incomplete and rushed

Only things I disagreed with Bellec on is the fact that he killed Mirabeau, and his stance to never trust a templar.
He was right about the peace only being temporary, but it wasnt really peace at all, it was Arno working with his girlfriend who happened to be a templar to kill other templars. Killing the leaders of the assassins' and trying to kill elise was just foolish on his part.

Pierre was a fascist more interested in putting the assassins into power than carrying out what they were formed to fight against (granted, I sympathize with viewing the measures the assassins take against the templars as a series of half measures, but he went entirely the wrong way with it and in his quest to destroy the templars ultimately made him more like them). I even sympathize with ridding the assassins of their leader ship (albeit to take a decentralized approach to their mission)

Unpopular opinion i never liked the idea of Shay being the main villain as there was 0 build up minus him being Arno’s father’s killer there was nothing for Arno to find shay no lead or anything for that matter Arno was also young it makes more sense he would go after the man that murdered his adoptive father
Killing Shay in the main game would waist his character honestly it would have made more sense if there was a DLC that would have us find shay but not kill him instead Arno and Shay have a talk where Arno learns about why Shay did what he did and he learns to let go off his vengeance becoming a better man where as we finally learn about Shay’s conclusion him having left the templars and raising his grandson

OK, let’s look at this logically though you can see bellec survived the purge in rogue. He was the French soldier that was fighting with keesawagy. When they Attacked on fortress in the main town. “That’s the only village that was on fire. To kill one assassin. “ that’s clearly a reference to rogue. Bellec was scared and rightly, so the hunters are a huge threat and they’re still living in a dark time. While the colonial brotherhood may have been getting back on its feet, the hunters still existed. Do you think the templars know exactly what the assassins look like in unity and you don’t even do anything wrong, and how they fight with the assassins as well they’re a lot more skilled highly more trained that’s all thanks to Shay Patrick Cormack
And then, if you paid attention to the Nexus, which is the VR, which added a ton more lore, they included the hunter proto call. A animus programs from direct hunters that jump into the animus to fight another animus assassin. Blecc didn’t want to risk the chance of another purge. And since he knew that this one was the daughter of the grandmaster of the French Templars. And they mentioned the old Gaurd, in unity also when Arno spies on the meeting your guard is definitely going to include hunters maybe even members of the Patrick family
a bigger problem is that both sides are scheming manipulators to achieve their goal, and they back opposite sides in many cases, which will eventually result in a proxy war in which the truce might be broken, which leads to the secret war
Bellec was blinded by revenge and a little bit of fanatism. But he was right only about one thing: You can not trust a Templar even though they have good intentions (Shay had a noble purpose but in the end he wanted to trigger a Revolution that could have killed thousand of innocent people).
Mirabeau and DeLa Serre were good men (maybe Mirabeau was more a Bureaucrat than an Assassin) but they were too naive to believe that a truce would last.

Assassins Creed needs to go back to making proper Assassins Creed games. All the franchise needs to do is to focus on Assassins and the Creed again, as well as moving forward in time with the modern day, going back to the old games is nice but we need something better to look forward to.

@@wb6930In Rogue's defense, they had like 8 months to create an entire game. I believe that if they had the proper amount of time, they'd make a great story. If there's any AC game that needs a remake, it's probably 1 and Rogue is right behind it.

By that logic so did Altair. Bringing by his Templar girlfriend who other templars want dead. Not really a Templar anymore at that point.
@Dustin81 Altair did that after the Assassins were defected by Abbass, Arno brought Elise while she was still a Templar and the Assassin's brotherhood still backed by Assassins.
@@hamaguitar Is she really a Templar when the others are trying to kill her. That is like saying Shay is still an Assassin after he got shot after stealing the manuscript.
@Dustin81 She literally says she is different than Arno by her being a Templar and him being an Assassin, she despises the Assassins, atvsome point she tells Arno she didn't think she would see him run to the Assassin's and she doesn't trust them, at the Cafe Arno tell her but you can trust me, adding that he is still the same person they grew up together etc...
