Just for the record, in the 80s, it was not uncommon at all for teenagers to date older men. It was very common place. With the exception of one guy, from age 15 forward, I only dated guys that were in their 20s. Heck one was a cop that I met in a nightclub at 16. My mom didn’t mind and a lot of other parents didn’t either. Just a completely different time in life.
I was in high school in the 80s and knew of a 16yo girl who was dating a 27yo cop. I know, because I had a crush on her, and it was my job to know! For the record, I was 17.
The record company wanted to mesh his story with his song ad he ii at that time a songwriter ,but it was horribly done. And after the kis*s you could actually see him stop ,like director what tha f*Im supposed to do here now lol.
He is gorgeous by the way,this poor ly produced video doesnt do justice to him, in a video when he is singing live, he is everything we women want a man to be singing for us regardless the age.
Hilarious. When you watch enough reaction videos, I guess coming across a reactor you know in person is inevitable. Folks, Greg’s a genuinely good guy. Keep up the good work, buddy. 👍🏽
A few thoughts: 1. 4:20 There's a white van in the background with tinted windows 2. He's wearing a bigass wedding (?) ring on his LEFT hand at the phone booth 3. The girl seems clinically depressed maybe? She's aware he's at the window and is OK with it since she opened her window so he could sing to her, and she's OK with him singing into the phone to her. It's a consensual relationship. 4. The whole carpet sequence is his fantasy, or that's how I see it. He didn't really throw a carpet through her window. 5. If he would "wait til the end of time for her" why can't he wait a couple years til she's 18 and out of dad's house? Then he could do whatever he wanted with her at night instead of wanting to kidnap her on a flying carpet UFO over the New Jersey Turnpike? 6. I find it weird the lyric says "separated by fools who don't know what love is YET." "Yet" implying dad and the other "fools" will somehow eventually be convinced that 16 is an OK age for a girl to have "love" with a 34 year old man...
Hi Justin, I think I have answers to your observations: 1) That's his van. He's also seen around town in it handing out candy to kids 2) Yes, he forgot to mention he was already married. And though he was separated, it wasn't a legal separation. Plus, he was still living at home with his wife... this made dating other women, or girls, increasingly awkward 3) her prescription for Zoloft obviously needs to be decreased. Her father knew this but did nothing about it 4) it is not a fantasy. It's factual. Plus, there's no window. Just a window frame. Again, the dad knew about this but did nothing 5) A fall from a concert stage in Hoboken, New Jersey, damaged his prefrontal cortex and greatly reduced his ability to control his impulses. Plus, he couldn't get the rights to fly over Tony Sopranos' house... 6) The brain damage in the aforementioned "Hoboken" accident had him temporarily think he was 20. He knew the age of consent in NJ is 16, and the acceptable difference of ages has to be within 4 years. He figured the dad, the Judge and the other fools, once they read the age of consent law, would allow their love... they did not... and rightfully so.
I like the flow of the song AND I know that Benny Mardones has told the story of the reason for the song... however, that explanation came WAY after he took heat for the song... this 'prehistoric' video dove tailed the song and this video pretty much says it all right? The Alibaba carpet part almost had me wet my pants 😂!

The open verse maybe “she’s just 18yrs old” and not 16 that may have made somewhat of a difference and not used Benny in the video as the main character.. I did research I get all the meaning of the song and the video as well…with that said no I don’t believe he is/was a pedo/perv in real life.

I also knew the whole back story of the song and him helping out, etc. What I did not know is that there is a radio version where they changed the line "16 years old" to "18 years old." Wow. I was just commenting from other people’s thoughts that the opening line may have sounded better with the 18 instead of 16…Benny possibly wouldn’t have gotten so much backlash and critiqued harshly; and you’re correct different times/eras all made a difference too.. There was a duet after Benny died from Julio Iglesias sang and he changed the first line to totally something different and the comments were mixed on it…Nevertheless the song was a hit and for me it never gets old when listening to the song different times over last couple decades:’) Kind regards..

It is about a family in need of help and someone did mention how pretty the girl was. Benny said she is only sixteen years old, leave her alone. Know the true story. The music video is cringey, however the backstory about the song itself tells more of a story about how the song came to fruition. In todays society with everything going on, it's very likely many people would jump onto the bang-wagon about children (rightfully so) but the song has more meaning than one would think from the music video. Then again it's an early 80's video which weren't the best in terms of portraying what songs are generally about. Just a suggestion, to listen to the Barry M. interview about the song. All in all the video is 100% cringeworthy to the 1000th degree, but the meaning of the song is relevant and the video doesn't establish where the lyrics came from.
If it was me the 16yr old,I would definitely date Benny Mardones!! Its a fantastical reality ,student and teacher falls in love all the time. But I would agree, should have just let the song play and just have a band video. Or have an actor. Then there's Benny crazy story.
