omg i've been playing guitar for 13 years, i gave up on pull off sequences because i thought my finger strength was just bad. but..."FLICKING THE RUBBER BAND" CHANGED EVERYTHING! I CAN DO IT NOW! THANK YOU!!!!
@@nejihyuga5914 kinda like pressing on a stretched rubber band with your finger, then while pressing, pull downwards away from you with the intention of letting the "rubber band" slip out and shoot off into the distance!
bruh i learned how it is done a week ago and i’ve been TRYING not to pull the lower strings for a whole WEEK bc my teacher never told me to mute the others thank you so so much for this💜
Great exercise! One question from newbie though -> don't I learn bad habits if I just mute lower strings? Then even lousy pull offs don't sound bad. Not muting would force me to carefully pull off each middle string. Cheers!
Marcin, Great question :-) I would say it can be a bad habit if you do it unintentionally, however if you are intentionally muting it is just another tool that you have in your guitar tool box :-)
great lesson Thanks :) i want to get good at doing the pull off first INTO the note of the song....... opposite of what u do here...... i see jerry garcia and billy strings do this all the time.... always sounds exciting and pushes things :)
The problem im facing with pull offs atm is on electric guitar, i can't take my finger off the middle strings without accidentally causing a full off and playing the open note @.@ super frustrating
If your still straggling I recommend this exercise that seperates the fingers, its training tendons however so Its pretty rough. The exercise has 2 parts. First part is you lay your fingers across 4 frets like this tutorial. Now notice how your fingers want to pull away as you fret each note, dont let them. Play as slow as you have too but discipline each finger to hover just over the string even when not fretting. Go until you feel a consistent burn then begin part 2. Part 2 is a stretch that will ease tendon pain as well as work toward finger discipline. Hold your hand infront of you with and keeping all other fingers straight, bend your index fingers at the second knuckle till its pointing away from your palm Then once you can flex them without moving other fingers bend them from the first knuckle slowly with your other hanf and feel the tendon stretch as you try to keep your other fingers straight. You should be able to make a right angle with all fingers at second knuckle and a clean 45 at first knuckle with your index and ring fingers. Hope this helps!
Pull offs man. I always wanted to make my pull offs sound more like the other notes I play. It's been a struggle. Let's see if watching this video can fix my problem! :D Edit: I play an acoustic guitar, so things like pull offs, tapping (which is related) and bending are inherently challenging. I know these things can be done, plenty of evidence right here on YT, so I need to get some techniques down and then practise like 2setviolin... I feel there is a budding guitarist inside me who wants to come out! And I have all the time. All the time in the world. :D I have autism, and with that, sadly, comes a bit of dyspraxia. Those are the cards I was dealt. I'm not a complete dunce tho, I taught myself how to juggle. So I can do some of the things. With juggling, the wall I hit was five ball routines. I just couldn't do them! I see that I'm kind of up against a similar type wall with the guitar. I have other things, thanks to autism, that, I feel, more than makes up for my lack of dexterity. So I won't complain. Just the cards I was dealt.
Great video.... Any tips on doing pull offs for fast pentatonics? 2 note per string across 2 strings repeating 4 notes over and over... At tempos atleast 140bpm with 16th notes... So pretty fast.... I'm confident I'm not pulling off correctly causing that "quiet" sound you mentioned, however being at this speed I don't feel I have time to pull off, just time to fret the note then move, if that makes sense.... I'm going for the zakk Wylde sound and I'm pretty sure it's this that's holding me back. Cheers anyway, subscribed to your channel.
Glad you dig it Phil!!! I would say a week of doing this 2-3 minutes a day would start to show vast improvement on your pull off clarity and technique. Definitely keep it in your playing routine after that initial week as well :-)
Is it normal in the beginning for your fingers to hurt? I have a steel string guitar and especially notes that are close to the top of the fretboard are uncomfortable since the string is the most tense there. For example if i want to do a pull off from the 1st fret on the high e string to an open string with my index i really can't use all my power.
It’s normal for your fingers to hurt. It’s guaranteed to hurt when you’re new to it. Like other guitar skills, just practice it a bit each day and your fingers will toughen up. Soon it won’t hurt anymore.
Been playin guitar for 14 years and always avoided pulloffs for the reason hating them coz they sound like shiet. Good tips right here, gotta give em pulloffs another chance.
I see a dislike from someone who pulled their finger off the like button rolling it to the dislike by accident. Gotta work on those pulloffs!
🤣
Very timely, I’ve been practicing pull offs all week. This is just great 👍Thanks
Perfect, David!
It's pulling off to fretted notes that's difficult.
Soon I'll only need to work on my pull-outs tho ^^
Work on your hammer in first
Try slide in first
Ayyy😩💪
how, I can't even impress women with my weak pull-offs 😞

i didnt understand flicking the rubber band. If you know can you elaborate?

Love the way you teach. All your lessons are effective and this one too. Thank you 😊
You’re too kind! Thanks for saying that. Cheers!!

Hammer on next!? Please 😅
God bless you sir
thanks for this lesson, helped me a lot, so simple but so hard to find a good explanation about
Good practical lesson on something I’ve been struggling with. Thanks!

Finally somebody who understands!!!!
Good exercise, even for more advanced players
Thanks a ton. In just 4 minutes you've helped me tremendously 🤘🔥
I am having the same problem with hammer ons. Loud and then soft.
Same here! 😭
Thanks for preparing me to clean up the mess that keeps off doing pull offs.
I subscribed
I guess the muting applies to the Hammer one?
Thanks.
Great, Tony!
Thank you very much, Tony!

same man tryna to switch strings using pull offs
Should be better now, yeah?
I find pull-offs can quickly become painful. Maybe I am using too much pressure.
thanks mate, hepled a lot
When he said pretend like you are flicking a rubber band off your finger I subscribed.
Great excercise! Thanks!
Glad you like it, Adolfo!
Thank you for these wonderful tips Tony! I can finally play a smooth pull-off.

My issue on fretted po’s, is bending the string.
THANK YOU

Been trying to learn and practice Setzer’s pulloffs in Sleepwalk. It’s still not clean. Frustrating
If my finger hits the lower string after picking, but doesn't play a noise, is that bad technique?
Another great idea!

I don't as a rule, do a pull off..I hammer on and sometimes bend and hold.
So for some reason when I do a pull off on my bottom E the sound is just quiet I’ve been using a capo a lot so uh if that’s the reason?

Almost 3 years in and I still have a hard time with pull offs...evil little buggers
Tony please tell me the action on your guitar. 12th fret low e string. Mine is 3mm and its hurting my fingers. Please repply pleasee
My friend, this is late but 3mm is soooo high. Get to a guitar tech and save yourself some agony!
Great video lesson sir, I have this problem.

So is it just me or are pull offs harder than hammer ons?
