Adding Barbell Storage to a Weight Tree

- I mentioned in my video on the Rogue weight tree that there were attachment points for various add ons. This lead to a few questions asking if you could add a barbell holder to it...

Brandon: "I've been waiting for this moment my whole life......"
In seriousness, I'm liking the way you're putting these reviews/breakdowns together. Very clean.
Only took a pandemic for my videos to be relevant. I eagerly look forward to the next plague.
@@BasementBrandon I'm starting a channel dedicated to understanding locusts.
I don’t even wait for the intro song to finish anymore, I just click the like button. I am a simple man. Brandon uploads. I upvotes.
That's why you're my dude.
Brandon Campbell Diamond ss yoke on Craigslist for 250 $. 2 hr drive should I buy???
@@sloppyjonuts9162 For a 4 hour round trip I wouldn't, but that's just me.
Bit the bullet and got a home gym about a month ago and started Barbell Medicine's Beginner Template. I absolutely LOVE the home gym! I have mostly Bells of Steel equipment and a Rep bench. Thank you so much for all the tips, it's seriously one of the best investments I've ever made!
that's awesome glad to hear another convert!
Good video Brandon I would never have thought about this as I was considering a half rack so I could store weights. You have given me food for thought thank you
Lots of options!
I've been hemming and hawing about this weight tree....looking forward to the full on review!
You and me both!
Last week a family member tried to buy some equipment from Rogue. Plates were readily available at decent prices. Bars, in contrast, were completely sold out.
Then again, I went to the nearby Target yesterday to buy paper towels, and they were completely sold out too.
lol
Thanks Brandon. When you mentioned this a few weeks ago I decided to try it and it works great. My other option was extra J hooks but they've been out of stock for weeks.
Gives us a reason to buy more bars... when they're back in stock.
I wanted a weight tree and specifically the rogue one because it had wheels. My plan was to roll it around to either side of my rack so I don't have to carry plates across my basement when loading/unloading. Well, the rep one looks almost the same and only costs $100 it just doesn't have wheels. I figured I'd pay myself $100 to move my plates around. The rep tree does have 2 barbell holders built in. I don't think it would hold an SSB like you have but i don't have one to try. It currently holds a 15KG bar and a ez curl bar with all my plates. But looking at the price of adding 4 barbell holders to the rogue plate rack, you could literally buy 2 rep trees that in total will hold 4 bars and then place them on both sides of your rack (assuming there's room) and eliminate the need for wheels as well. This may be an idea I steal from myself next year.
That was my thought too with the wheels, but with a lot of weight it doesn't move well on stall mats :(
@@BasementBrandon Glad to see that us lifters are universally lazy and its not just me.
Thanks for this video. When I asked Rogue if I could do this they recommended against it as they claimed the Weight Tree wasn’t designed to safely support the barbell holder if attached. I think it works well though, when properly counterbalanced with plates. Question though, have you tried any storage expansion on the holes at the top of the weight tree? Wondering what cool stuff we can install there!
I added more plate storage for my change plates and collars :)
I bought a couple of those for my RML-690 and I'm going to put one on each side when I set my stuff up. I plan on running my rack length wise and use both sides of the rack to bench/row or squat/rdl super sets. My space is 10X18 so I thought that running it length wise in the middle of the space gives me both sides of the rack to work with and still be able to store weights and bars on the rack.
Sounds great!
Nice take! I wholeheartedly agree... the cost overall just puts it behind other storage options.
Thanks Scott!
Thank you for doing this video. Appreciate it. Looking forward to that full review.
No problem!
Do you put any stock to damaging the bars by storing the barbell vertically?
Nope! Never any issues.
Very helpful, Thanks Brandon 👍🏼
No problem!
Awesome option!!
Not a bad way to add some functionality
I just realized your from RI! I’m from NY but my wife’s family is from East Greenwich, RI! We got back few times a year.
Ah nice! EG is a good place.
Now they just need a dip attachment to put on the top lol
Have enough weight on there it would prob work.
I use this setup but it’s because it meets my needs. My gym is in an unfinished basement with walls fully insulated, so there is no way to mount anything to the walls. I have a squat stand, not a rack, and there is no way to mount any storage to it. If this is your scenario, then this is a great solution.
Right on!
REP Fitness has the perfect weight tree imo. It's $100 ($130 with shipping) built just as solid as the Rogue weight tree and has two built in barbell holders.
Does it have wheels?
@@BasementBrandon it does not.
We all came here to hear B talk about storing your shaft efficiently.
Take care of your shaft and it'll take care of you.
Bells of steel rolling weight tree includes 4 bar holders standard, larger wheels, and free shipping.
Nice.
I usually just batter ram the barbell into the drywall and that’s seems to hold it just fine for me
Seems legit!
Thanks for the insight. Someone mentioned utilizing UHMW tape to line the holder to prevent the bar from getting scratched up during storage. Have you had any issues with this? Thanks in advance.
I haven't, the bar will get the same kind of friction from putting plates on and off it.
What about change plate or standard peg plate storage? Obviously you're not getting full sized plates down there, but maybe change or dumbbell bumpers if you use them?
I'm going to put those up top on the higher mounting points. Just haven't been in stock!
@@BasementBrandon I can't wait to see that. I've been debating it for a while
Oh..! I wish I saw this before I ordered and fixed bar wall hanger.
Wall hangers are better if you can fit em!
Yes I did. No complains.
Nice product
Thanks for taking a look.
Informative video as always. Had an unrelated question about the Texas Deadlift bar in Cerakote Are all Cerakote finishes created equal ? Basically is the Texas Cerakote just as good at staying on the bar as Rogue or American Barbell ? I think that the black Cerakote Texas Deadlift bar with chrome sleeves looks great but I saw a couple of comments about the Cerakote flaking off and that’s the only thing keeping me from pulling the trigger on buying one right now.
I haven't heard that from anyone I know with one. I will say though overall across the board I've seen a ton of QC issues with everyone during Covid.
Brandon Campbell Diamond yeah they could be rushing them out the door a little too fast. Might be better to try and hold off for a few months.
Rogue plate tree is 110% worth it. I know there are cheaper products but every rogue product I have I know will outlast me while is worth the extra cost imo.
Any idea if it is possible to put a verticle bar holder in between the triangle plates on the base? Or is the verticle one a little to wide? Would just be putting an ez bar there.
Hmm not sure tbh I'll have to look.
@@BasementBrandon If you could get that information that would be great!
Hi Brandon, for the center post, you mounted plate storage posts, do you know if the rogue RML vertical bar holder will fit there? Are there holes near the bottom of the center post to mount it to?
The holes are only up top, so it would be really out of place IMO
Is vertical storage a problem for a needle bearing bar? I bought a Eleiko Weightlifting Bar but don’t have the space for a gun rack.
From what I've heard, but can't confirm this. I think the thought is when stored vertical the oil in the bearings will gravitate down.
Hey Campbell, I’d like to learn more about exercising and nutrition. Would you make a video and or point out some books that you like?
Some of my older videos were all about that! Maybe I can do an updated one at some point.
Brandon. I thought that this was a great idea to store a Prime Fitness Trap Bar and also maybe the earlier version of the Kabuki Transformer Bar but when I went to the Rogue site the weight tree they show has only two bolts , holding the center cross bar, not four per side like the one you illustrate. Am I looking at the wrong Rogue weight tree? Thanks
If you don't put on the bar storage it'll only have 2 bolts per side, the bar holder needs 2 to connect making it 4 total per side once installed.
Do you have to have the wheels on the tree or can you still use the bar storage without wheels on the tree?
It should still work.
GHD review coming soon? Can you cover 'Reverse Hyper versatility' on it?
I plan on going with 1 posterior machine this Black Friday, and I'd like to go with the most bang for my lower back strengthening/decompressing buck.
I can probably do that. I did cover it some in my "should you buy a GHD video". I like it a lot!
Hi Brandon what is your opinion on the rogue Ohio bar- e coat thinking of investing in barbell and plates
I still prefer a stainless or bare steel shaft when possible. I haven't had an e-coat bar but I heard it's similar to black zinc.
Have you had any issues storing your barbells vertically? I’m looking at going with a vertical barbell holder but I see a lot of people recommend horizontal over vertical storage. A vertical barbell holder would save me a bunch of space though.
no. only time I probably wouldn't is on a higher end olympic weightlifting bar where you want the bearings to stay lubricated.
I may add two more uprights to my rack with plate storage eventually. I really your plate storage rack on wheels though.
If you can swing a 6 post they're great!
I think it adds 16-20 inches to the depth.
It the wheels were not on would the barbell holder still work?
Yes, they'd be flush with the frame.
Is there an inner protective plastic or something so you don’t ruin your barbell sleeves when storing your barbell?
No. It’s just metal.
Just metal, but it won't ruin a bar, might just scratch the shaft some, which will happen anyways over time from weights.
Hey Brandon, I was just wondering whenever you disassemble and reassemble your rack, is there any damage to the areas around the holes where nuts and bolts go? I’m asking because I have a monster lite rack that I’d be moving to another location. Would constant disassembly (retightening of screws and nuts) have any negative impact on the integrity of the rack itself? Cheers man
If you overtighten it can. The only real things I've seen is imprint marks on mine from the bolts/washers, but they get covered back up when reassembling.
Hey Brandon! In the process of making a basement home gym and deciding between the Titan X3 short and rogue sml-1. Still a college kid so it's my parents house and they might renovate the basement which would make it ~82 inches ceiling height. Wanted the basement masters opinion - do you think the sml-1 or x3 (and maybe having to cut 2 inches off the uprights) would be a better option? Thanks!
I have the SML-1 and love it. I wouldn't cut the uprights, in fact I thought Rogue could or used to make custom cuts for uprights.
I prefer a rack over a squat stand. You might be able to expand your search some and find some 80" racks as well.
Hiii bro I want to make a rogue SML-2C squat stand for my home gym so pls tell what type of metal pipes I should use - cast/wrought iron or Mild Steel or any other ? And which material is used in commercial gyms for these type of rack?
Most rogue stuff is 11 gauge steel.
Does that rogue barbell holder have UHMW lining inside? It doesnt say anything on the website.
It doesn't but the steel inside is smooth
@@BasementBrandon some reviews on Rogue said it will scratch sleeves...what are your thoughts?
@@hoqiez not any more than normal wear and tear from taking plates on and off.
@@BasementBrandon thanks that's what I figured!
I'm guessing you'll need the wheels add on for this to work? Would the weight tree + barbell holder with a barbell stored on it still maintain balance if all the weights were removed?
I've been able to take the weights off and haven't had any balance issues.
That's a good call out I should have mentioned, the holder does sit slightly lower so likely need the wheels.
will it work if I don't have the castors?
It should sit flush
Won't the rack tip over when unloaded?
IIRC Rogue will be discontinuing the infinity line.
GetRXd and frayfitness also sells a tree with 4 bar holders
Doesn't tip
Barbell gun rack and wall mounted tire pegs do the same job for a fraction of the cost
I have a gun rack as well, but some people might not want to go that route (or have that many bars to need one)
The Titan vertical bar storage is great quality and like $75
Juan G. The the pair I got from there was $42 after tax
Yeah you can def get some good deals on stand alone holders (the 9 bar one I have from Valor was like $90).
My cheap amazon one already has this 😎
nice.
But first you need a weight tree haha
Trueee, they were in stock at the time of this video.

I got my Valor one for $90 :)

hey brother, be careful about posting your zip code online. it doesn't seem like much, but with a few tidbits of information here and there someone could steal your identity.
It's Rhode Island, there's just one zip code for the whole state :)
I've been moving so much the past 2 years it is likely an old one lol
I put a titan vertical bar holder, a pair for $42 .....
Nice!
I was loking for this exact comment. Was hoping the hole pattern would match up from the Titan Barbell holders and the Rogue Weight Tree. You say you got the "vertical" bar holders? Not the Horizontal ones?
@@hulkslayer626 vertical and it fits
@@MrHOMERUNS got the weight tree and the vertical bar holders... no where to bolt them on other than the top of the weight tree though. There are no holes on the lower half of the upright... did you drill holes in the upright?
