As of yesterday, I have completed the Switch remake of The Thousand-Year Door and wow...
*THERE IS A LOT* that would've been good for this video 😵
At 17:11, I mention the Bob-omb in Podley's place. His dialogue changes every chapter, and he gives lots of insight on Bob-omb explosions. Comparing them to throwing punches, etc.
In Chapter 3, you fight Bob-ombs with standard factory designs in the Glitz Pit. They can explode and will appear back in the ring after the battle.
In Chapter 7, there's the whole cannon firing scene, and all those Bombs survive. And furthermore, if you come back and talk to one of the Bob-ombs later, he jokes that the bombs were hurt from the cannon, then clarifies that literally all of the Bob-ombs are fine, except for one, who doesn't like exploding.
Basically ALL of TTYD supports that Bob-ombs survive explosions. There's a lot of Bob-omb lore in the game, and for all of it to be suddenly retconned due to Origami King feels off to me.
In the TTYD remake, Bub's fuse lights when he's excited. This isn't the only game where this happens though. In Minion Quest, this is also true of Bob-ombs in Bowser's army. There's one Bob-omb in particular that has his fuse constantly lit during the Cutie Contest segment in Gwarhar Lagoon. I believe others do it later in the game, but that's just the easiest example.
I highly recommend talking to the Bob-ombs in TTYD if you play through it anytime soon. There's so much random lore and fun ideas.

I feel like the origami king was built around the out cry of fans, slightly poking fun at them.
Ollie was a guy that HATED toads, saw them all as the same and wanted them all silenced.
Fans were saying that all the toads were the same boring design, and of course, that toads voice is annoying.
I feel the origami king was trying to push past the weird limitations set by Nintendo (or the director, I don't remember) and actually built an entire story revolved around these generic people, showing they all still had lives to live and stories to tell.
It was a neat thing to do, though I am glad that we might be going back to the era of interesting character design and normal paper Mario mechanics.

The thing about Olly hating all toads always makes me so mad.
from what I've seen, that's mostly a construction by the localizers, where in the original Japanese version, he hates toads because they vaguely remind him of the Craftsman, who he really strongly hates, and not because they all look the same
the localizers somehow managed to make olly's motivation so much worse while insulting so many fans, wow

Great video, always happy to see some Origami king appreciation, genuinely love that game so much.
Though fan theories like wondering why Bobby died are fun, I do think it was just because Mario's cannon is fairly loose and the writers don't feel obliged to stick to it rigidly. This was the story they wanted to tell so they simply chose to go against what has been established before.

I also just would think that the idea that the Bob-ombs produced by Bowser are as stated meant to be short-lived. Purely used for to blow up and be replaced by the next batch. Like, the Bob-ombs Bowser uses for Inside Story, we don't k own if those are the same Bob-ombs. They just explode. I would think they served their purpose and when he does another attack with Bob-ombs, he just has another batch. Makes sense.

This game made me adore simple things, simple characters, everything simple. Simple stories, simple tropes, everything simple. It has helped me appreciate fiction more for what it is no matter how much tropes and cliches it used, made me stop being a critic and hate people take everything so seriously and more. Bobby truly is the best character that they have done in the Mario universe and I honestly love that Bobby also represents a concept about life and why we should treasure it, same thing with Olly and Olivia.

I grew up with TTYD, but this was in 2021 way before we knew of the remake. So I got TOK as it looked fun. I cried so bad for Bobby when he died. Whether that was because I was homesick or because of his writing, I'll never tell, but I did love Bobby's story.

This is an expanded remake of a video I released in January 2022.
The original video had less than 400 views over the course of the year and a half I had it public. If you've seen the original video, there is a lot of new content included in this remake, so you should still watch it!
The original video was one of my favorite videos that I ever made for my channel. It was the first well-edited video of mine, and even though it's pretty rough now, I was very proud of it, and I was quite excited while making it too.
You can watch the original video here, but it has content that is basically identical to stuff in the new one: th-cam.com/video/IioCRRFknq4/w-d-xo.html
But in that original video, I featured a TH-camr that I wasn't friends with. I knew her for years (she was on my Discord server) and I included her out of obligation. It was disappointing to put so much effort into a video like that, and then have to include memes and advertisements I didn't like.
I should've stood up for myself and backed out, but I promised I would include her early on, so I kept my word. She didn't force me to include her.
Furthermore, I do not wish to associate with her anymore. I do not have any beef with her personally. We did ban her from my Discord Server for repeatedly acting obnoxious though.
However, I did find out about some pretty bad things she had done elsewhere, and I don't want to be associated with someone like that.
I don't want any drama on my channel, so I won't go into detail. But I felt obligated to bring it up. Please do not discuss this in the comments section. I would like to move on from all of this.
Anyway, the primary catalyst for making this remake was so I could remove the collaboration. But more important to me was going over the "Why does Bobby die?" question, which I promised as a separate video way back in the original. I also discovered other details about the nature of Bob-ombs that I wanted to share. I treated this video almost like a reboot. I put a lot of effort into creating a visual style that I can continue using in my future videos. I put a lot of time and love into this.

A theory I have is when a Bob-omb is missing a key component, they will actually not recover from blowing up, meaning they will need to properly replace it in order to actually survive blowing up, that is why we see custom keys in the other games, and why Bobby didn’t survive, it was a improper replacement

I would honestly love to see spindrifts (mario 64), Rexes (Super mario world) and cataquacks (sunshine) make a comeback. Or especially some wonder enemies migrating to the mushroom kingdom
Or at most, maybe way more variations on the things we do have. If we can put costumes on toads, we can surely at least get at least a hat on some of the partners.

8:07 Just wanted to point out that your translation is correct.
でも(de-mo) is "But" //I don't know what the text was prior to this statement, but when you begin a sentence with this, its basically calling into question whatever you had stated prior...just like the way we use "but" in English
あなた(a-na-ta) is a formal version of "You." A term you would use for a person you don't know well. When you add のこと(no ko-to) to it, あなたのこと, you're basically saying "everything about you"...or rather, "everything that is associated with you"
    何となく(nan-to-na-ku) means "For some reason"
おぼえているような(o-bo-e-te-i-ru yo-u na) is a bit more tricky to breakdown. The first part, おぼえている is a conjugated form of the verb おぼえる[覚える](o-bo-e-ru), which can mean "to remember." To make a verb like this an 'active' term, as in it is something currently happening, you conjugate it by replacing the る with て, and adding いる behind that. ような is the tricky part, as it is a way to same some seems "like" something. Putting it behind a continuous state of remembering, a literal translation would be "It's like I'm remembering ___." Its safe to say that there is no direct translation for what he's trying to say, but that's as close of a translation I can offer.
なんで(na-n-de) is "Why," followed by a sentence ender だろう(da-ro-u), which is a way to express one's unsurety about the statement they are making.
DeepL is pretty good with translations, and it did you well this time.
This concludes my Japanese lesson (I've been learning it on the side the past couple of years. I don't know everything, but I know some things :P)

I believe that the line preceding that one is the one later in the video where, from my translation, it said "[Bob-ombs] are all the same, it's easy to make a mistake"
I actually translated the full scene over a year ago, and I just grabbed the relevant quotes for this video.
From what I saw, it went like this:
context: (Olivia is bewildered at there being multiple Bobbies since she thought he exploded.)
The Bob-omb asks if she has him confused for another Bob-omb,
then says [Bob-ombs] are all the same so it's easy to make that mistake,
then says the "I seem to remember you" line.
Really glad to hear that the first translation I included is fairly accurate! I was worried that it was off, but I figured that, even if it _was_ off, the statement was simple enough to still imply reincarnation either way. Glad that was the case. And thank you for sharing!

In Bowser's Inside Story, Bowser does not have access to any of his minions. His castle has been taken over, and Fawful has brainwashed or imprisoned all of his minions.
The special attacks are specific squadrons of minions that were locked in cages.
The Bob-omb crew is the Bob-omb Blitz: a small selection of less than 50 Bob-ombs that you can attack with endlessly.
Since Bowser does not have access to his army, he can't continuously replace the Bob-ombs, meaning he's attacking with the same Bob-ombs every time he uses that attack. They disappear for gameplay purposes. Just like the Goombas he uses in Goomba Storm seemingly run away or disappear after they are used. This goes for most Brawl Attacks in the game.

There was a very poignant meme on /v/ comparing “Me? Well… I’m Bob-omb” vs how TTYD would have handled Bobby giving him a cowboy hat and saying “well, nice ta meet ye, Mario. was havin' a Chuckola with a pal o' mine back in Rogueport the other day. was ramblin' on about one of his seadog pals named Mario. Me? I'm Bombo. Hopin' ta start a new life of Whacka ranchin' over in Dry Dry Desert.” I also have some contrasting Bobby and Bobbery in the swole doge/cheems and the Chad/Virgin format. I think Bobby was written way better.
I used to be dead set on wanting more imaginative variations of classic Mario species, I didn’t even like Super Paper Mario because the Pixls were so one note.
I’m happy for you all that Nintendo acknowledged the poll that uniquely designed party members are desired, I would’ve wanted that too. But after the Origami King, I just appreciate the notion that you don’t have to stick out from the crowd visually to still be an individual. Your personality is more than your design gimmick and short recruitment arc. I trust Intelligent Systems to strike a reasonable balance, but my tastes have been overwritten by Bobby.

"Although my life was short, you gave me more than a lifetime's worth of joy. Though you will mourn, I beg that you remember that time, like love, is a tide." - Scarlette, Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door
Ah... I think I just realized another reason they had a reference to Admiral Bobbery on 'The Princess Peach' cruiseliner in Origami King...
You know what adds to all this- Later, watching Bowser Jr. nearly get killed getting cut in half by Scissors, it- It hits. After moments like this, you for a second hold your breath. Especially where throughout this game Bowser talks about fatherhood and the joys of raising a child. Like- Mario just has to keep seeing terrible things happen and persevere. The Paper Mario games even in the lesser-liked games still have those themes of friendship and love and tragedy and sacrifice.

Even in TTYD enemy bob-ombs you fight very much blow themselves up, while bobbery using a clearly larger explosion can do it just fine.

10:45 I think this seriously undercuts all the fun and interesting stories and dialogue that those partners had. Especially in TTYD, Bobberys' backstory is such a good one in that game. I'd say this better applies to the pixis of Super Paper Mario that have absolutely no dialogue or significance past obtaining them.

    • @DaNintendude
      @DaNintendude  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

All the TTYD characters have great introductions, and characters like Koops, Bobbery, and Vivian are important to large portions of their chapters. But when is Bobbery important after Chapter 5? When is Koops important after Chapter 1?
The partners in TTYD have great introductions, but then fall back to being someone you only pull out when you need to use their ability.
I'd argue that Ms. Mowz is arguably a more impactful partner than Flurrie, depending on the player. Mowz is a recurring NPC throughout the story. Even if you don't unlock her on your save file, you're still gonna remember her as that badge thief that appeared across the earlier chapters of the game.
I do think my wording was a bit harsh. I think TTYD's partners are really well done. Especially considering their unique flavor text, which was lacking for PM64's partners.
But I would love for partners to be more involved after their chapter of introduction. And characters like Flurrie could've used even more relevance throughout her _own_ chapter. Unless you're using Flurrie for battles, you only really need her for about 4(?) puzzles in the Great Tree (two of them, optional).
The Origami King partners were heavily involved with the plot of each chapter, and while I don't think that's feasible with the classic partner system, they can certainly be more involved.

    • @pokekiller787x
      @pokekiller787x 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@DaNintendude I want to be clear here, I agree with your opinion that partners should have more story significance throughout the game. Similar to how Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Bowser were in Super. Also, Bobbery arguably has some importance in Chapter 7 since it's his actions that led to you being able to use the cannon in the first place. Also, you do need Flurrie for a lot of secrets throughout the game, and she's consistently used in her chapter in conjunction with the punies. I do understand what you mean, I just think the way you portrayed the partners of the classic games was a bit unfair to them. That's just my opinion though.

    • @DaNintendude
      @DaNintendude  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

First, I drew up all the different frames of the dance, then created the animation synced up to the actual dance from Origami King. I used After Effects, but I imagine this first part would be possible in any animations software.
Then I pre-composed the animation and added movement. And I stretched the height at specific points to give it some bounce.
I pre-composed that and threw it into a new composition.
I then created the floor-- a flat circle with faded edges and a repeating dot pattern.
I brought it into the After Effects composition and t urned that into a 3D object, so I could lay it flat to act as the ground. I turned the dancing animation into a 3D object as well, so I could line it up in the center.
The shadow and reflection are just duplicates of the animation, but laid flat above the floor. I just messed around with the opacity, made the shadow fully black, and made the reflection blurry.
Finally, I created camera movements to roughly simulate the vibe of the original Origami King dance.
I added some very simple lighting, and added a vignette effect after rendering and exporting.
      TL;DR
I created the dance sprites and did the animating in After Effects. Took around 8-10 hours altogether, if I recall correctly.

    Incorrect.
I played through this entire game and beat it a few days before it officially came out (shoutouts to hacked switches and leaked nsps), and "Bobby" only left one impact from me: the bullshit asspull that was him dying after exploding.
It showed me that the Paper Mario devs during that day and age can't even follow the structure they've shown time and time, a race trait of bob-ombs specifically being that they don't die after exploding, then just breaking their own rule for the sake of "memorability" (convenience because they didn't want to implement a proper partner system and make a good battle system which actually utilized them.)
