      Get a solar operated fan or two Tony. A silver sheet across some of the poly tunnel will help.

      No joke Sean, wonder what other opportunities will arise with these spells of dryness recently. Tropical fruits, weather tolerant seeds and the like. Worthy of a video gents 👍🏻

    Its 82 degrees here, or 27.7 Celsius, and I thought it felt pretty good out. Its usually in the low to mid 90's here this time of year. That's 32 - 35 C. I guess the UK is farther north than we are here in the states. My plants are growing like weeds here. Keep up the good work Tony! You're a joy to watch!

    However tempting, dont water the polly or greenhouse floor when you are growing toms as you are inviting the dreaded blight which thrives in hot n humid conditions! Just aim to get more air through the polly by opening both doors, day and night, and taking off the lower leaves of the tom plants to promote better air circulation.

  • @claudialautenslager8695
    @claudialautenslager8695 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    You need to get shade cloth to put over the top of your polytunnel. We have to do that here in the States because we can get 110 degrees here. Sweet corn loves the heat, and lots of water.

    Feel your pain Tony, I have become a watering slave to my plot at present, no rain here in Newport South Wales for 5 weeks and we are bone dry all the soil in the beds have huge cracks in it and everything is bolting or keeling over!! I water as and when i can at all different times of the day cos i think some water is better than no water but man its a challenge!

    Thanks for the video Tony. I have double doors on my tunnel, i lined the doors with mesh instead of plastic then made frames with plastic on that i insert inside the netting on cold nights and in the winter, best of both worlds.

    I love you pronunciation of the varieties of things Tony, its great. Your broccoli is looking amazing I have one tiny head forming on mine I am quite excited to eat homegrown calebrese for the first time. My broadbeans are not as pristine as yours. I have been squishing blackfly for a while now, but I am getting beans. I hope the lady birds arrive soon. Squishing blackfly is gross 🤢
    We hit 32C last weekend and it has been sitting about 28 most days here in Surrey. I decided to leave my greenhouse door open at night but have put up some scaffold netting in the door way to help deter the cats and foxes from going in. I have a couple of very curious visiting cats that are always looking in my greenhouse and I wouldn't want them to get caught in there.

  • @johnpurdie2936
    @johnpurdie2936 ปีที่แล้ว

    Get yourself a roll of Scaffolding netting the length of your tunnel and unroll it over the top of your tunnel & attach some string to secure it to the ground this will shade your tunnel and help a bit

    Cut those stems off at the base on your celeriac. With everything else just keep up the water. I'm in South Australia which I'm sure you know, is like living on the sun in summer. Plenty of water early in the morning and most things will survive. Things may wilt through the heat of the day, but if you've given them heaps of water in the morning they'll be fine. Good luck and keep cool Tony. If it's any comfort to you it's cold, grey, wet and windy here at the moment. lol

    Oh yeah. Celeriac has gone to seed. They are bog plants and like to stay wet. Might be too hot there now. Peppers like the heat so they will do ok. But May need to change the way you do tomatoes and plant them outside of the weather stays this way in future. Good luck! Mine is finally getting a break from the heat here in Nebraska. Finally got a 2” rain! Hadn’t rained in weeks.

  • @sandye9029

    I had to put hay down as a mulch, in some places thick Ruth Stout style, strawberries today I had to put the pots in cat litter trays with water. Been really hot for 6 weeks in the South, rained once. Summer Raspberries have given up but strawberries and blackberries doing ok. I don't have the time to water everyday. My outdoor cucumber has been under a shade cloth for two weeks now.

  • @Gothbrooks420

  • @ronguille9721
    @ronguille9721 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I'm surprised that you are not top dressing the soil with mulch whether it be in the greenhouse, polytunnel or raised beds??? A light dressing of grass clippings will help hold the moisture. Even cardboard after a water. Or get a shade cloth for the polytunnel. Watering that much washes away the soil nutrients.

  • @urbsoapco5489
    @urbsoapco5489 ปีที่แล้ว

    Shade cloth is your friend when the temperatures get like this Tony. Over the polytunnel and also over the plants that are still in pots and trays, alternatively place them in whatever shade you can find? Filling the pots with water may help but last summer I literally boiled the roots on all my brassicas! You could also place fans in the greenhouse at home….might help?

    It’s unbelievable how hot it’s been , here in Cornwall we’ve had no rain in over 5 weeks , my outside tomatoes look the same as yours in your Polytunnel , I’m watering constantly and the ones in pots have the plastic saucers to catch the water, I think I might try Bananas next year if these hot summers become the norm.😂

    it's so so hot and dry, we're not used to it. I water every morning, so they're set for the day, but it's better to water midday or evening if the plants are wilting. The celeriac is bolting ;-)

    We're forecasted some rain here in Lancashire from the weekend onwards, so hopefully you'll get some where you are.
    Seeing your struggles with keeping your polytunnel cool enough has caused me to think about the self- build (pallet and trampoline poles) design of the one I intend to make. Was it a lot better once you'd opened the back door wider? I'm wondering if I'd better make extra openings at the sides somehow aswell as front and back because this heat seems to be the norm every year now.
    I hope all your veg survives. My spinach has all started to bolt slightly but it's not too bitter yet so I'm going to pull it all up and eat as much as I can.

    Yep, they've gone to seed Tony, however, I have had 3 celery and 2 celeriac go to seed, I cut off the seeded stem and I have fresh leaves growing up from the bases which I'm harvesting. I don't think the base of my celeriac will be any good, but I basically grow it for the leaves anyway.

    Saves a few quid on the cover too..

    There’s no problem watering in the heat of the day, nurseries do it all the time and it doesn’t burn the leaves at all 🙂
    I try to water in the mornings and avoid evenings so the moisture has time to evaporate and reduce the risk of fungal disease. We get to 40C at times here in summer and have to shade our outdoor plants or they can get sun scald 🥵

    If celeriac is anything like growing celery, they literally need to be bathing in water, as much as possible. Celery is actually a bog plant, so I'd assume celeriac is similar. Yours may be going to seed if it's dried out too much. When I grew my celery last year in containers, I made sure they were saturated every day and had big saucers under the pots so they could sit in the drained out water.
    Update: It does need to be consistently moist but not waterlogged like celery can be, because otherwise it can cause rot and fungal disease on the celeriac :)
