    Thanks to you guys, I got my new career in Advanced Composite bonding materials, and now build helicopter components and parts. The stuff I learned from you guys got me through the rigorous interview process! Now I work with carbon fiber, kevlar, and all sorts of materials regularly! Can't wait to start my own builds.

      @@zero_to_1000 how aren’t they doing it right? Because they didn’t vacuum epoxy it? People who say others “are doing it wrong” because they don’t do things like them, are in fact, doing it wrong!

    • @zero_to_1000
      @zero_to_1000 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@streetassasinGSR96 introducing more air into the epoxy reduces structural integrity. It's not a matter of vacuuming, or curing, the techniques he's using to apply resin aren't exactly conducive to making a sounds part. My point is that it looks like it works great for making something that looks nice but that wouldn't pass QC in a real aerospace manufacturing facility.

But will be diving deep into it by making monocoque fuel cell/tail section/subframe units, swingarms, possible hybrid titanium carbon frame, yokes, engine covers, etc. At 11:22, what is the "pizza cutter" tool you're using? I that from Fibreglast as well? I've got a pair of shears for kevlar, which are nice. But that cutter looks like it makes long cuts and rounded cuts a breeze.

    “Dry carbon” generally refers to pre-preg where you don’t add any resin besides what’s already infused in the material. Kind of a misleading term often misused

    • @stick004
      @stick004 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Only people who don’t do carbon work call pre-preg “dry carbon”. Actual professionals call them by the right terms.

      Tim here knows his shit... that why he called the cured “dry” carbon with no top coat “dry carbon”. It’s noobs who call pre-preg “dry”. The boys above a clearly experts on the topic.

    • @TofumanFC3S
      @TofumanFC3S 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      You are being hilarious @stick004 Take it from someone who has worked with cfrp prototyping and manufacturing in robotics: “Dry” refers to the finished product that is constructed using pre-preg. The pre-preg isn’t “dry carbon”, the resulting product is called dry carbon * insert name of part * in marketing terms.
      It is used to differentiate between high quality parts that are fabricated in autoclave to be as identical as possible in strength and weight to the gram, which is important in ultra high speed delta robotics, and the wet lay or resin infused parts that are often manufactured for show purposes but are overly “wet” with resin.

    So you don’t need a mold? how would this process compare to a hood vs a roof?

    • @Captaindan7141
      @Captaindan7141 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I used these guys techniques to do my car in carbon fiber. The roof is fine with just 3 layers as it is fully supported on all 4 edges and is 3M panel bonded in place - never moves. A hood is a different story because it needs to only attach at the hinges (bolt holes) and opens. I just made the same 3 layers and used quik latches on all 4 corners and it does alright because it's a racecar. However if you wanted OEM usability you'd have to make the outer skin and the inner frame and bond them together. Here is a good video: th-cam.com/video/UgKvDw1E60E/w-d-xo.html

  • @dylancrow3775
    @dylancrow3775 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    By laying the panel over the original roof skin wouldn't it make it slightly over sized to the panel it's replacing. Is it not enough to cause concern? I only ask bc I usually see a mold made and then the part made from the mold. This seems more efficient but was curious if the result is less ideal

    whats the material price for a roof like this ?

  • @anomamos9095
    @anomamos9095 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I’d wrap that centre rail in carbon before fixing the roof panel.
    Tip put some fold out extensions on the front of your cutting bench so you can put a rod through the carbon rolls and roll out the carbon and cut it without climbing on the bench.
    Also get some pvc pipe roll up the large lay ups on it so you can roll them out on the job. If you make up a frame on wheels to hold the pipe you can work large jobs on your own.
    S glass is stronger than carbon and Kevlar especially under impact conditions it doesn’t shatter as readily.
    If you use two layers of S glass in three of carbon the part will be stronger and lighter than a seven layer carbon part.
    Incase Ive mixed things up S glass is the same stuff as the transparent aluminium I believe and E glass is glass fibre

    It would be very hard to do this on my GTi-R, part of my roof panel extends about 6” down the C pillar and from the factory it is brazed to the quarter panel, the joint is flush from panel to panel. Obviously you couldn’t braze carbon to steel, so it would have to overlap the quarter a bit and be bonded to the steel and then the transition would have to be filled, and then a small portion of the C pillar carbon would have to be painted the body color, up to what LOOKS like the roof line for it to look right

    Try Dry Ice on the glue you're trying to Chisel, it'll make 'em extra brittle.

    Can you just rivet carbon roof to the car?? And for the resin is it ok to mix titanium dust and diamond dust into the resin??

    I think the roll cage with a carbon roof question was more aimed at what happens in a rollover situation with a carbon roof and no cage?🤔 maybe not tho

      The point remains... it should be as strong or stronger than the steel panel, but that steel panel is just a skin anyway. It's not actually _doing_ anything (structurally). Similar to this: bit.ly/30WHZcg

    For removing the glue on the fenders, I wonder if dry ice would help make it brittle and easy to remove. I have seen people use that technique to remove factory floor sound deadening.......Hmmmmm?

    If the laminate is formed on top of the existing roof, making it 3-4 layers higher, couldn’t the same be done with all the panels, making the need to remove panels moot?

    ❓I've got a pretty detailed question... Hypothetically if I were to make a f1 monocoque what would you think would be good for layers? I was thinking:
    - 4layers of 12k carbon 2x2 twill
    -1layer of kevlar (galvanic corrosion)
    -1/2" aluminum honeycomb
    -1layer of kevlar (galvanic corrosion)
    -4 layers of 12k carbon 2x2 twill

      @C-M-E 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The thing with monocoque frames is that they are not uniform in thickness, so different weaves and weights go in specific areas. They also use special honeycomb foam layers to bulk up structural areas vs aluminum for ultimate weight savings while retaining the stiff properties of carbon. If one were to reproduce a one-off, you'd fare fairly well in laying in opposing layers of S-Glass and carbon, as kevlar really has no structural properties and is used for abrasion resistance in areas like the engine compartment and underside of the main tub for crash protection.

      On top of what the other person said. twill is actually one of the least used carbon fabrics used in structural components. unidirectional carbon will have better properties but only in one direction. So you will often see the top layer will be twill for looks and under that will be layers of Unidirectional cloth alternating directions to give strength to the structure in the directions that matter and less reinforcement where they don't need it. the weaves give mediocre strength in every direction. something like a F1 tub will e primarily uni fabric
