16:18 That's also the sample used in the Woodfall Temple in Majora's Mask I didn't bother to look it up to check but it obviously is. Also, mentioning OMORI and not mentioning Sprout Mole Village, the song almost entirely made out of the Toad "bup" sound? What a travesty. 7:08 I also know this song was used in like 50 different games, including as a vocal backing for an orchestral boss battle theme of some JRPG I forgot the name of lmao This is definitely an infinite rabbit hole to an extent. It's a fun one though, not like one that ends in getting bitten by a snake.
The OMORI song you're referring to does not actually use the Toad "bup" sound as its sample. It's actually sampling Scatman John, specifically the song Scatman's World. The title of the song, See in Your Fantasy, is actually a line from the song too.
"To the Batmobile. Let's Go!" I have a theory as to why the 60's Batman show (including this facsimile) was so popular for sampling in the 90's, not just in VGM, but Goa Trance. This show did not get a home video release until 2014, due in part to the legal conflicts between Warner, who had owned the characters of DC since '69, and Fox, the show's original broadcaster. This meant that any sampling of it was not strictly enforced due to the conflicting rights. My favourite example is from Juno Reactor's 'Pistolero,' which quotes Zelda's line: "I hate robbing banks."
Masayoshi Soken was so proud of his work on Mario Hoops 3-on-3, that he always put it in his introduction credits alongside his more orchestral works like FF14 and FF16
20:52 - Oh MY GOD! You have no idea, how much I wanted to find to source of that drum sample. To the point of isolating drums from the track and Shazam it multiple times.
Dude you do not understand HOW HYPE it was at 25:07 when you were talking about sampling a voice clip, and as you were talking I realised exactly what song you were talking about, then when I saw you show the Shenmue II clip my face lit up like crazy.
I’ll be honest, I didn’t know there were samples in Splatoon, but really, I should have expected it just due to the style of the soundtrack. Now I’m curious as to just how many other samples are in the OSTs for the trio of games! EDIT: I've watched this video at LEAST 10 times now, and I just can't stop coming back to it. This video even got me to buy two of ZERO-G's sample libraries. Here's hoping we get a masterpiece like this solely on Hideki Naganuma some day.
There's actually an entire channel dedicated to showcasing the various audio samples people have discovered that were used in Splatoon songs. Its called Splatoon Sound Sources if you're curious.
In the Pokémon movie OST as well, the drum loop at 20:55 is heard throughout the song "Pokémon World". Had no idea it was sampled, along with a lot of other ones in here. This was an awesome video, subscribed.
FOOBAR2000 MENTIONED !!!! RANCE MENTIONED !!!! MITSUDA MENTIONED !!!! TAKADA MENTIONED !!!! ok there's too many cool things mentioned but GREAT VIDEO AS ALWAYS BLUE !!!!!!!!!
As someone who’s getting into music production and delving into sampling, its awesome to usage of sampling throughout all of my favourite games and the applications with it. Defs feel more confident around expanding what can be sampled.
31:50 As one of the people who still make YTPMVs to this day, I'm glad you mentioned YTPMV and otoMAD in the video. It honestly feels kind of odd that not a lot of people are interested or talk about them, considering today's internet humor. 😅 But yeah, great video on the subject. I've always been fascinated by where those video game samples come from and have always wanted to try to get my hands on them. ❤
what a refreshing video about sampling! Sampling doesn't make someone less of a musician. They're sound artists. Just like using blue paint as a painter. Thanks for the unbiased take on sampling~
Sometimes making a deliberate choice to use a familiar or even overused sample or preset BECAUSE of all its cultural associations is a more meaningful creative choice than designing every sound from scratch because you believe anything else is cheating in some way. Shouldn't really need to be said in 2024 (or even in 1994) but plenty of people still think that way, especially about presets.
Extra fun fact! The track from Xenoblade X has ANOTHER sample that’s used in another Sonic game. The woaaaaaahh in the back ground (you can also hear in the video) is also used in Sonic 06’s Kingdom Valley.
Absolutely insane to find out the origins of Japanese Beat from Rance 5D! It's always been a stand out song within the entire series for how unique and experimental it was.
I remember noticing the *funky drummer break* on so much media.. It's such an amazing sample. Powderpuff girls solidified my love for how simple and addictive it was... I just never wanted it to finish, 24/7 amen break!!!!!
thanks for bringing some attention to the "she bad sister" part of the think break, people play it so fast its just known as the 'eh' sample sometimes, anyway it brings any jungle song to the top tiers when its used.
the fact the verse to fly away is a sample blows my fuckin mind. its so powerful and raw i figured it had to be bespoke. makes me wonder how many other samples are out there that go way harder than they have any right to
15:25 I'm not sure if you omitted this for time's sake or for some other reason, but free riders shares not one, but two samples with xenoblade, and funnily enough, it's the same one you'd shown just a minute earlier! It's "Theme of Rocky Ridge", at just about a minute into the song. I love finding wacky throughlines between franchises I love :)
There were a few shared samples that got cut for the sake of time (like the sample PE-RI-CA uses), but that's actually not one of them: I just up 'n' missed that one somehow. Kinda crazy since I've 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘥 Rocky Ridge before; I probably just forgot about it somewhere during the compilin' process.
I fell down a small rabbit hole with that one track from a Persona anime that used a sample from the Masterbits Rhapsody Vocals CD, which went memetic for how absurdly awkward and silly it sounded in practice. He's in the house like carpet, etc. etc. I got curious about it, but it seems like a lot of information about masterbits and their libraries seems to have sort of eroded. Their website is defunct and only accessible via the wayback machine, and they don't have a wikipedia page or anything like that it seems either. I feel like tou can't help but be a little saddened by that, especially when you realize just how prevalent their work was across so many great soundtracks. Also, MELTY BLOOD MENTIONED!!!!!
The funny thing is that finding out I'M IN THE HOUSE LIKE CARPET came from a sample CD was kinda what led to this video bein' made to begin with. It also meant finding any reliable info on Masterbits was a bit of a struggle, for the exact reasons you mentioned. Zero-G is at least still kinda easy to find relevant info on, but Masterbits may as well not even exist now.
This video was so awesome! When I read the title, I assumed it was on how "regular" musicians sample video game music for their songs, but I didn't know that game composers also draw so much from samples. As soon as you played that "Leena Improv" sample, I immediately recognized the NLA Day theme, haha
my favorite thing about sampling is how it connects so many different and unlikely worlds, and this video perfectly depicted that. one of the things that always mystified me when i was a kid was hearing a sound in a level on spyro, and then hearing the same sound in a missy elliot song. what a banger video.
28:52 There's also a song in Splatoon 3 called Nine out of Tension that uses the amen break. Side note: Seep & Destroy (aka Bang Bing) from Splatoon 3 uses a 909. So that means that in the Splatoon canon, the amen break and the 909 have survived three world wars, global flooding, and the extinction of humanity over the course of about 15,000 years. Looks like we've got a lot of house and DnB music ahead of us.
@RadeonVega64 The Roland TR-909, the sequel to the TR-808. Very popular in house and electronic music. The kick, snare, and toms are synthesized, like the 808, but unlike the 808, the hi-hat, cymbals, and clap are sample-based.
One of my favorite videos of all time, i'm huge hip-hop fan and i love how producers are able to use samples to produce some of the greatest intrumentals i ever heard. It's so cool to see how sampling is used in vgm, i think my favorite example is SOR, especially the fourth one, one of the best osts of all time imo. Amazing work dude, i hope u make more videos about VGM in the future.
I've always loved sound sampling, but I never knew that it was THIS deep. Probably the most mind blowing one for me is the Majora's Mask one. Also, "Here We Are" In Undertale also uses the same samples as "Amalgam". By the way, RelaxAlax made video about musicians using video games samples in their work. I'd highly recommend it as there's some crazy stuff in there. One of the songs he shows used Darkness of the Unknown from KH2 in it.
holy crap 21:06 I have been looking for this sample for years. I first heard it used as the starting hook for a german pop song, and it ended up also being in "The World Ends With You"... at that moment I knew it was a sample, but couldn't pinpoint where.
Man ! Super well researched video, I was super shocked to hear the sample at 12:46, because I remember it so clearly from Mirrai Nikki's 1st ending song, "Blood Teller". Hollyyy smokes.
20:37 as a hip hop producer myself, I’d like to point out that the drum section of the boss theme fa this game is a modified version of “hot pants” by bobby Byrd, one of James Brown’s colleagues
Always love ur videos! Ur one of those channels that I go into every group chat and drop a link of a new upload and say "wake up babes new blue video dropped"
Amazing vid dude! Never really knew about sampling until a few years ago after getting into breakcore and jungle, but it's crazy how much it's used literally everywhere. Naganuma sampling Malcolm X will always be the hardest shit ever, but man hearing the clean sample for that portion of Fly Away was pretty insane. I swear though, once you hear it, you can never unhear it. I just hear Amen Breaks and Think Breaks everywhere now o_o
The segment about the Break samples... The samples themselves are so familiar to me since I'm a Drum and Bass fan, and the Amen and Think breaks are so prevalent in certain styles of DnB such as Liquid DnB. I love it!
idk what it is about samples in music and sound effects in media but it excites the hell out of me. Ever since I was young I was able to recognize samples and sfx in media shared from other media (hell even the same with voice actors as well) and it was like I was so proud of myself for having the knowledge. Parts of this video literally got me jumping up in my seat because of hearing something 1000 times and finally seeing where it came from. Thrilling watch for me, and a great video. Thanks for making it.
Another fantastic video here! I can only imagine the amount of time went into research alone here. Not to mention the stellar editing here too! Plus, adding the ending here discussing the importance of the human element in this all I feel was a great way to cap it off. Especially considering recent technologies being created with the intent of phasing that important element out. Seriously though, your content is really phenomenal for a channel of this size. I can't wait to see what it is that you've got coming next!
Really good video! Some of these samples hit me out of the blue, "MONKEY BALL??" I also wasn't expecting an appearance of an FE fav of mine here or the SpongeBob Akuma meme my friend made.
One sample I will always remember is in sonic rush where they sampled a bit of Malcom X’s speech for wrapped in black the whole soundtrack for rush and rush adventure is so damn good though. Great video I love stuff like this
Wow, this video is amazing!! The research and editing must've taken you forever. Super stylish + really like how you presented this. Can't believe you're this underrated!!
I have to thank TH-cam recommendations. I thought I was going to find another samples + games songs video, but no, it's a music and story library. I literally have a tab open to listen to the songs that this guy is referring every 30 seconds hahaha. This goes directly to favorites.
The sample at 16:19 made me bolt up because I know that sample from ANOTHER video game! It was used by Motoi Sakuraba for the Baten Kaitos soundtrack, specifically in the song "Rumbling of the Earth." You can hear it around 34 seconds into the track , at least on the Spotify version. The song uses a LOT of "ethnic" sounding samples in it, I bet a lot of them are from the same disc. There's another song on the OST that uses a lot of samples too, called Chaotic Dance. Last I heard nobody knows what the samples are from, but I wouldn't be surprised now if it's just from another sample disc like the chanting in Rumbling from the Earth. Baten Kaitos has one of my favorite soundtracks of all time, and now I'm finding myself wondering how many of my favorite musical moments from it are actually samples? Another song I've always loved is that final night song from Majora's Mask, and I had NO IDEA it had a sample in it until now... Mind blowing!
13:50 Man, I love the Methods of Mayhem CD, it's so good. Klepacki and Bailey used it quite heavily on the Red Alert and Half-Life soundtracks, and I like those soundtracks very much. I also find it somehow funny that the Mirai Nikki ending "Blood Teller" used the "Overwhelm and Destroy 81-07" sample (together with the "Shocking 81-08" sample) from Methods of Mayhem, 20:08 Ha, I've heard that sample previously in a track by SFX (early Astral Projection) titled, well, We Are Controlling Transmission. Cool seeing it here.
12:30 the forever sample. I know exactly where it’s from. It’s Terry Funk saying forever after what was supposed to be his final wrestling match in Japan. Type in Terry Funk Forever and you’ll find the clip
I pop off every single time the “Amen Break” and “Think about It” samples appear in every song I listen to! To me it’s like the ultimate ear candy, it’s so good!
Dude, the art of sampling is so freaking cool! It was great to see how games both new and old used sampling for their soundtracks! Honestly reminded me of a time where I thought the vocalist in the song "Iwatodai Dorm" (from Persona 3) was Lotus Juice (one of the main vocalists). It was actually a rap sample from "Hallelujah" by Best Service, and it always confused me on why they did that haha! Thanks for the great video! ヾ(≧▽≦*)o
This was such a fun and educational video!! I had no idea the Amen Break was a thing and I was giggling whenever a sample popped up and recognizing so many of them in games haha
23:09 I know I should be commenting about samples, but I found it very amusing seeing a clip of Sui-chan in this video, took me out it for a moment ngl ahaha, but really enjoying this video and how it's presented, amazing job dude! 👏 Edit: 33:44 o7 Pomu
Thank you for providing an insight into the samples used in my favourite indie games' soundtracks and their origins. There needs to be more videos like this on the art of sampling!
This video is incredibly well put together and very informative. A lot of the samples you played even in this video are in DDR songs btw. That first "Let's Go!" is in "Synchronized Love" for instance. And that "Radical Rebel" voice clip is in King of fighter's Maximum Impact (Forgot the stage) and Put Your Faith In Me from DDR.
Dude, you completely blew my mind with LiveForever and X-Rave. as SOON as i heard those vocals i thought about it, i paused, found the full sample on youtube, and shared the video and the sample along to my friends. I then resumed, and there you were a couple of seconds later with that song!! As a huge Pump it Up fan, you uncovered a big mistery we all had with this song from DM Ashura. You've got a new subscriber. The format was super entertaining to watch, and the research done on this is extensive and super detailed and interesting. Thank you for this masterpiece of video.
One of the first times i noticed "sampling" in a video game was for Golden Axe (1989, Arcade). Wasnt so much for the soundtrack as for sound fx. There are a couple of death screams lifted from Conan the Barbarian (which is fitting the theme), but a weirder one is the "villager being attacked by orcs" scream... which is taken from American Werewolf in London (1981).. its the scene where the woman who runs the porno theater box office is screaming for help about a "mad dog" in the theater.
Your visual presentation style alone makes this worth the watch. Awesome history lesson and a practical one in how much production can enhance a simple sample.
LOVE this video!! No clue if someone's already said it, but it sounds like the Zero-G Ethnic Flavours track is also what's sampled in the Woodfall Temple's theme from Majora's Mask! I clocked it there before Growl from the Digital Haze ever entered my mind!
already rewatching this banger of a video because it's just that good! Funny coincidence that golden sun has a mention when nintendo just announced it being added to the gba library on switch
The samples from NLA in Xenoblade X shook me to my core. Ive never fully listened to the Sonic Free Riders soundtrack before so to say my jaw hit the floor is an understatement
You are criminally underrated. You are hitting that lemmino style of storytelling but focusing on video game topics instead. Really excited for more from you 😊

The moment I heard that sound I immediately smiled because I KNEW it was the SFIII 3rd Strike SA Charge sound
"To the Batmobile. Let's Go!"
I have a theory as to why the 60's Batman show (including this facsimile) was so popular for sampling in the 90's, not just in VGM, but Goa Trance.
21:57 proud to say i instantly knew where this sample was going that character select really imprinted on me
Masayoshi Soken was so proud of his work on Mario Hoops 3-on-3, that he always put it in his introduction credits alongside his more orchestral works like FF14 and FF16
20:52 - Oh MY GOD!
You have no idea, how much I wanted to find to source of that drum sample. To the point of isolating drums from the track and Shazam it multiple times.
i think it comes from led zeppelin - when the leeve breaks
They use it in the "Pokemon World" theme song for the Orange Islands
I lost count of how many times I loudly went "HA!!" out of pure giddy excitement every time you showed a sample. An absolute delight of a video.
The Pizza Tower samples from the pre-relkease/beta (minus the one used in "Pizza Time") were intended as placeholders
5:16 that glitchyness really freaked me out. I had to watch it a few times to make sure I wasn't seeing things.
TAKADA MENTIONED !!!! ok there's too many cool things mentioned but GREAT VIDEO AS ALWAYS BLUE !!!!!!!!!
oh I forgot SOKEN MENTIONED !!!! LIL B MENTIONED THANK YOU BASED GOD

As someone who’s getting into music production and delving into sampling, its awesome to usage of sampling throughout all of my favourite games and the applications with it. Defs feel more confident around expanding what can be sampled.
20:31 That is the best sample sonic cd ever used
31:50 As one of the people who still make YTPMVs to this day, I'm glad you mentioned YTPMV and otoMAD in the video. It honestly feels kind of odd that not a lot of people are interested or talk about them, considering today's internet humor. 😅
But yeah, great video on the subject. I've always been fascinated by where those video game samples come from and have always wanted to try to get my hands on them. ❤
16:19 DUDE I thought that one was going to be another one from Majora's Mask (woodfall temple). Truly I got bamboozled
It is lol
what a refreshing video about sampling!
Shade's use of sampling in the late 90s/early 00s has always been so interesting.
@@megaman2055 Oh 100%
I remember noticing the *funky drummer break* on so much media.. It's such an amazing sample. Powderpuff girls solidified my love for how simple and addictive it was... I just never wanted it to finish, 24/7 amen break!!!!!
Wasn't the sample in Powerpuff Girls actually the 'Funky Drummer' break?
@@jackpijjin4088 ah yes! You're right. Somehow people kept on saying it was amen break back then. I hear the funky drummer break
By the time Powerpuff Girls had it, hip-hop was sick to death of using it for at least a decade 😆
thanks for bringing some attention to the "she bad sister" part of the think break, people play it so fast its just known as the 'eh' sample sometimes, anyway it brings any jungle song to the top tiers when its used.
the fact the verse to fly away is a sample blows my fuckin mind. its so powerful and raw i figured it had to be bespoke.
makes me wonder how many other samples are out there that go way harder than they have any right to
15:25 I'm not sure if you omitted this for time's sake or for some other reason, but free riders shares not one, but two samples with xenoblade, and funnily enough, it's the same one you'd shown just a minute earlier!
I appreciate your xenosaga ui during the Mitsuda segment. nice details.
That sample sure feel like velvet turtle
What an insightful video! Now I realize why I love some of the most random themes from xenoblade x, spyro 2, sonic forces, splatoon and others. Wow
This video has so many deep cuts it's amazing
A fun one that got missed, the rap sample in CVS2's New York stage can also be found in "Goin' Down!" from Sonic Adventure.
"...Like Michael Jordan..."
Incredible video, man. Now to listen to each and every song listed in this!!!
Looks like we've got a lot of house and DnB music ahead of us.
whats a 909? is it smth like an 808?
@RadeonVega64 The Roland TR-909, the sequel to the TR-808. Very popular in house and electronic music. The kick, snare, and toms are synthesized, like the 808, but unlike the 808, the hi-hat, cymbals, and clap are sample-based.
@@NotGabe001 👍
27:12 this sample could also be a reference to jet set radio future in the song "let mom sleep - no sleep remix" which uses it in the beginning.
This blew my mind so many times. All the soundtracks I've loved over the years especially the fighting games, had no idea these were samples!
The "Forever" mystery sample 12:15 is from Voice Spectral II titled "Whisper 02"
That's an exact match, thank you! Not being able to track that sample down was driving me crazy.
Thank you!!
You're amazing!
Always love ur videos! Ur one of those channels that I go into every group chat and drop a link of a new upload and say "wake up babes new blue video dropped"
16:23 Glad you included PSO for this sample. Of course everyone knows about Woodfall from MM.
I love it!
3:45 Killer7 sound effect spotted. Subscribed
idk what it is about samples in music and sound effects in media but it excites the hell out of me.
Man, I thought I knew a lot already. This video is a goldmine. Thank you 🙏🏾
21:06 holy fuck poptropica sampled this
I love poptropica could you clarify where this is used in the game?

Really good video! Some of these samples hit me out of the blue, "MONKEY BALL??"
I also wasn't expecting an appearance of an FE fav of mine here or the SpongeBob Akuma meme my friend made.
DAMM you're editing style is very clean, you did a good job!
15:32 I've been searching for this sample since I learned they both had the same sample. Thank you, my search has ended.
One sample I will always remember is in sonic rush where they sampled a bit of Malcom X’s speech for wrapped in black the whole soundtrack for rush and rush adventure is so damn good though. Great video I love stuff like this
20:52 "só you wanna be a master, pokémon
do you have the skills to be, number one!"
Oh my frigging god!!!!!
I knew I heard that from somewhere.
That sample is also used in Majoras Masks Woodfall Temple theme!
13:50 Man, I love the Methods of Mayhem CD, it's so good. Klepacki and Bailey used it quite heavily on the Red Alert and Half-Life soundtracks, and I like those soundtracks very much. I also find it somehow funny that the Mirai Nikki ending "Blood Teller" used the "Overwhelm and Destroy 81-07" sample (together with the "Shocking 81-08" sample) from Methods of Mayhem,
20:08 Ha, I've heard that sample previously in a track by SFX (early Astral Projection) titled, well, We Are Controlling Transmission.
7:09 This sample was also used in Tokyo Xtreme Racer Drift/Kaido Battle in the song titled the same as the sample.
23:09 I know I should be commenting about samples, but I found it very amusing seeing a clip of Sui-chan in this video, took me out it for a moment ngl ahaha, but really enjoying this video and how it's presented, amazing job dude! 👏
Edit: 33:44 o7 Pomu
28:32 caught me off guard, i repost that meme all the time
It's one of my favorite videos, too; the temptation to throw it in was just too strong
That 3 2 1 sample is also used in the japanese sonic cd soundtrack in both palmtree panic bad future and the invincibility theme

Ain't no way Malcolm X was in a fricking sonic game
I always love seeing the reactions of people finding this out for the first time lol.
The editing on this video is really entertaining
22:02 Holy shit that just unlocked a memory :0
That song for Mario Basketball was lying dormant in the back of my mind for years
Your visual presentation style alone makes this worth the watch.
And the continue on Pizza Tower sound samples, this would be used in the noise update 16:48
already rewatching this banger of a video because it's just that good! Funny coincidence that golden sun has a mention when nintendo just announced it being added to the gba library on switch
Heh, it's all part of my new cross-promotion with Camelot
Might wanna keep your eyes on their next game...
The samples from NLA in Xenoblade X shook me to my core. Ive never fully listened to the Sonic Free Riders soundtrack before so to say my jaw hit the floor is an understatement
3:08 hey thanks for using one of my sheets, cool video
You are criminally underrated. You are hitting that lemmino style of storytelling but focusing on video game topics instead. Really excited for more from you 😊
