    FYI, whenever someone dies in a volume of the manga, there is a little "in memoriam" cartoon at the end of the volume showing whoever died going up into heaven. Nina, Alexander, the boys' mom, even villains like Father Cornello all sprout wings and float up into the sky.
    All except Shou Tucker- he's the only one ever shown to be burning in hell.

      Of course it's based on emotion. He did not "just" kill a little girl. He killed HIS little girl, which is even worse emotionally. You don't expect better from someone like Envy; he's an inhuman creation, why should he care about a stranger, or show empathy to another species? You definitely expect better from a 100% human father. Even villains can have loved ones, Shou Tucker doesn't.

      not to mention Tucker in the original transmuted Nina and Alexander just because he could, not because he was running out of options, he didn't care about his title as state alchemist as much as he did in the remake. I remember not catching on at all that he was evil in the original (but maybe that's cause I was a kid) but it seemed like it was pretty obvious in the remake (as Eric mentioned with the whole glasses pushing thing lol).

I tried watching it again recently and while the spirit is still there, the animation and pacing don't hold up to modern standards. Brotherhood is objectively better, but yeah the impact of many events in the original hit harder and better.

    So, to clear some things up. Human transmutation is forbidden in the alchemy world because nobody has deemed how much a "soul" is worth. So the whole equivalent exchange thing is an unknown because how do you figure out what is equivalent to a soul. As you can see, even Al's whole body and Elric's arm and leg still isn't worth a soul. Secondly, the people who research chimeras, what they do is try and use alchemy to splice animals together. What was revolutionary about that guy is he somehow made a chimera (which in the law is ONLY supposed to be animals together) so smart as to understand human speech. What Elric was saying is that it's a lot easier to make these impressive "chimeras" when you start with a human instead of using only animals.

      Walter White lust is essentially a different character with a different role in the 2003 series. It's not fair to compare them. Her character simply was not as much part of the focus this time around. In contrast, I feel like characters like Hawkeye, Dr Marcoh, Greed, Kimblee, and Scar all get much more interesting arcs in this version.

    • @Sleevies
      @Sleevies 7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Exactly, and that's why I've always preferred the original over BH. You got to spend time with the characters and get to know them and their stories in it, so it made a great impact emotionally.

    • @Lady_Yunalesca
      @Lady_Yunalesca 7 ปีที่แล้ว +37

      Keep in mind, I saw the original before Brotherhood, or before I read the manga. Even then, I found the way it portrayed Nina to be flawed. Even here we get more of an idea of her personality - she's strong willed, but also lonely, and it's something Ed and Al can relate to. In the original version she's a sweet girl and it's implied she's a bit lonely, but for all the more screentime it gives her, it doesn't feel like it gives her much more personality beyond 'cute little girl'. While the 2003 version isn't bad - and when I saw it the first time it emotionally effected me a lot - things like the whole "magic flowers" bit felt like they were there just to make us feel sadder when the inevitable happened. A few moments of this I can deal with, but an entire extra episode of 'nina doing adorable things' to make the inevitable sadder? It felt emotionally manipulative, and that's one of the issues I had with the 2003 series as a whole, even my first time through. So much of it felt like it was done purely for the sake of drama, rather than as something that came naturally to the story. Again, that's just how I felt, and I'm not saying it was done badly. I just prefer how it is done here.

    My introduction to Fullmetal Alchemist was the original 2003 anime's episode of this story, "Night of the Chimera's Cry". I remember I was about 10 or 11, couldn't sleep, and it was raining outside pretty hard. So I watched some Adult Swim and was blown away.

    The creator of the manga had a very interesting little quirk with this particular story when ever a character in the manga died there was a chibi Version of the character in the angel garb, Tucker is the only one in the entire Fullmetal alchemist serious to be given a devil costume instead.

    I think the main difference for Chimeras is that you aren't making a human from scratch or doing something with the human soul, you're just altering it's form. It's still very much taboo on a societal level, but as far as something on-par with a law of physics, the issue comes from matters of the soul specifically, not the body.

    *spoilers* what I love the most about brotherhood is that Edward and al never forget about Nina; it hunts them - and the last thing Edward tells The Truth when it asks him if he's willing to give up alchemy and become a simple human; is that he's always been simple human that couldn't save a little girl and the feels man

    Brotherhood was the better series overall, though the first adaption was pretty damn good, but I always preferred Night of The Chimera's Cry over An Alchemist's Anguish because we had more time in the previous episodes to get attached to Nina. Though, I do understand that most of this show's viewers had already seen the first one and this is all just a catching up to where it deviated from the manga.

    Episode 4: And The Dog Goes "Ed-ward"
    Such a brilliant episode. Well, brilliantly traumatic.
    On the surface there's the horrible situation with Nina, which barely showed any blood and gore but yet is one of the most disturbing things to happen so far. And it's rightfully going to haunt the main characters as well.
    Then there's the introduction of the scarred man, where at first he looks like a pure villain, but at the end you're kind of glad to see him kill Tucker. And then him killing chimera Nina... a sad end for her, but the scarred guy obviously considered it a mercy killing. So how is the audience supposed to feel about him afterwards?
    Underneath those events, it's interesting to contrast this with the previous episode. There it was science vs religion where blind faith and an abusive religious leader was the problem. Here it's science vs morality where unrestrained science is the problem. It balances out such that science alone isn't the end solution of everything.
    And of course this episode shows just how dark FMAB is willing to go. Death and terrible things don't just happen in flashbacks and to villains. For the first-time viewer of this series, if something like this can happen to Nina then you can't count out a tragic end for anyone.

    This is one episode that just sticks with you. It's raw emotion, fear, confusion, rage, and sorrow, it's one of the darkest moments of the show, though not the last. But it's one of the reasons I always find human's more frightening than monsters...we understand why a Monster acts monstrous, but we cannot fathom why a human being can act so inhumanly.

    Transmutation on a living is possible, its even quite easy when it comes to creating chimers. Plus this is experimenting on humans, so of course it would be forbiden. Bringing someone back to life is an entirely different matter. Its impossible and you pay terrible price for your conceit. Well, you have already seen the results, right?
