    Just to clarify. The alchemists don't use lightning at all. The lightning represents the use of alchemy. The flow of energy.

    Roy Mustang, code name: the flame alchemist, uses gloves with transmutation circles to create flames. Armstrong: the strong arm alchemist, uses gauntlets with transmutation circles carved into the gloves to perform alchemy.

    The idea behind Scar's power, if you didn't catch that, is that alchemy first deconstructs an object and it's materials then immediatly reconstructs said materials into another shape, that's why alchemy works on equivalent exchange.
    Basically Scar uses an incomplete form of alchemy that causes the deconstruction of an object and stops there.
    Basically; "touchy touchy FACE ESPLOOOOOAAADDD!!!"

      In episode 2, Ed implies that Al can do alchemy without a circle too, but when Al says he can't, Ed asks, "So, you didn't see it?" I think that is a good enough indicator that you have to see the "truth" in order to do it.

      Yes, when "God" was first introduced, he stated he was going to show Ed the "truth". Then Al sees Ed transmute without a circle and Ed says "You didn't see it?". Which also explicitly explains how Ed can use alchemy without transmutation circles.

    Nah, the reason why Edward doesn't need to draw out an alchemic circle every time he uses alchemy is cuz he saw the gate thing when he tried to revive his mom, thus he knows all alchemy circles and uses his own circle by clapping, making a circuit within his own body to create the alchemic circle, and imagining the glyphs and such within his own mind. It wouldn't work unless he's a genius tho, cuz he has to know every single circle memorized and all the substances and their proportions for each reaction and such and such, which is crazy complicated and only cuz he's actually truly a child prodigy/genius.
    Armstrong has circles on his gauntlets, and Mustang (Flame Alchemist) has the circles on his gloves, which are made of a special type of cloth/substance that produces sparks when he snaps his fingers, which mustang then uses his circles to manipulate into a larger flame. That's why he's useless in the rain, his gloves won't spark since they're wet and so he can't make a spark to manipulate.

      Ed is not the only guy who has ever attempted forbidden alchemy, everyone who sees the Gate gains an insight into alchemy and is capable of "casting" it without drawing circles.
      You'd have to assume that everyone who have seen the Gate are prodigies in alchemy. They're just good enough to attempt forbidden alchemy and get to see the Gate

    Some of my favorite things about this reaction:
    1. Everyone looking terrified and slightly offended every time either Nina or the mother gets shown, like "How DARE YOU SHOW ME THAT AGAIN". Especially Aaron.
    2. Calvin slowly starting to worry that Eric will eat them all with not to subtle looks and faces. I see you, Calvin. I see what you're up to.
    3. Their reaction to Armstrong, every time.
    4. Michael Scar.
    5. THE MEMES. Thanks Rhop.
    Despite the confusion, these reactions are amazing and I can't wait for the guys to get further into it.

    Transmutation, AKA Alchemy, requires the circle to perform. As Scar says, the Fullmetal Alchemist is unique because he creates his circle with his body, which is why he's well-known and everybody knows it's him when he does it.

    Glyphs = Transmutation Circles = Instructions, if you see the truth you've pretty much been given all the instructions and they are written within you and you just need to make a circle by joining your hands (or as someone says later on it's similar to someone praying which is ironic)

Ed can use Alchemy without using the circles because of what he went through as a kid when he tried to bring his mom back. every alchemist has to use the circles. I'm sure its possible, but there is a scientific method to Alchemy in this series, and it is rather apparent that even Flame Alchemy took "A Top Tier Alchemist" a literal lifetime to create to the extent that it appears in this show. It may simply be a matter of "Lightning" or "Electricity" based Alchemy hasn't been developed to the point where its actually useful outside of the lab. Sort of, the research either hasn't been invested in, or its in its infancy.

    1. Al used alchemy in the 3rd episode to repair a broken radio & to make a giant speaker when they trapped Father Cornello. He has to draw a transmutation circle to do it, he can't do it the same way Ed can.
    2. EVERY alchemist - except Ed (so far that we've seen) - has to use a transmutation circle (glyphs) to use alchemy, even when it comes to the things they specialize in. Major Armstrong has glyphs on his brass knuckle gauntlets, and Roy Mustang has glyphs on his gloves. You can see them as far back as Episode 1. And in this very episode they showed Roy with the transmutation circle glyphs on his gloves prominently shown during the namecard break.
    3. Lust called the guy who can transform his appearance by name - Envy. Ya'll were talking when Lust said his name.
    4. That stuff isn't lightning. NOBODY is making lightning. That blue stuff that looks like lightning is just the effect that happens when someone is transmuting something.

  • @DavidRomigJr
    @DavidRomigJr 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    They've thrown a lot of information in just a few episodes. Any alchemist can transmute anything by understanding the matter involved and activating a circle of power marked up with glyphs that controls the manipulation. You've already seen Al draw a circle or two with chalk. Alchemists specialize because every type of transmutation requires knowledge of the matter. Those that do the same transmutations all the time pre-etch alchemy circles into their clothing, armor, (or even skin). Mustang wears a glove with an alchemy circle on the back to generate gas and flint and steel on the fingertips to ignite the gas. The flint and steel doesn't work well when wet. It's been noted a few times that Ed forms a circle with his hands to transmute. (Al even said "just like teacher can" the first time he did it. Ed said "can't you?" thinking about his meeting with The Truth followed by "never mind".) They have not mentioned how he forms the glyphs. A philosopher's stone is said to allow transmutation without an alchemy circle. Don't worry, they will hit on these topics even now and again throughout the series.

  • @lendo__
    @lendo__ 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Transmutation circles are present on Armstrong's gloves and Mustang's as well, its a way to avoid having to draw one every time

  • @midnightthunderboy4
    @midnightthunderboy4 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Some clarification for Blindwave and anyone who is confused at this point
    Yes, you do need a glyph to do Alchemy, except Edward. All he has to do is clap his hands. It will explain later why he can do that. If you think Armstrong doesn't need a glyph, look at his gloves that he uses to punch things. There are glyphs in each gloves on the backhand side, same thing for Mustang(Flame Alchemist), you will see the red glyphs on the gloves he puts on during the fight with Scar.
    The lightning that you see whenever someone does alchemy is just a visual cue that alchemy is being performed. They are not necessarily using lightning to do alchemy/a lightning alchemist.

  • @BiasFree
    @BiasFree 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    The Alchemy circles are normally needed however, in Ed's case he saw a lot of secrets when he went through Truth's door, allowing him to not need one, he simply makes one with his arms when he claps his hands together. Most of the other alchemists in the show have Circles related to their form of alchemy printed on their clothes, or gear.Such as Mustang's glove, or Armstrong's gauntlet. Al can use alchemy but he needs a circle.

    The glyphs in alchemy are the formula for the changes that will be made by the alchemy. Like a spells words describe the desired effect. Edward, after seeing The Truth when he transmuted his mum, learned how to make his hands form the glyphs instead, hence the clapping. And all the other state alchemists use glyphs in some way. Armstrong has glyphs on his brass knuckles, Mustang has glyphs on his gloves (which are also made of a special material that creates sparks with friction, creating the necessary ingredient for flames).

    Everyone has to use transmutation circles unless they have seen the door that Edward did.There are transmutation circles that exist for every type of transmutation, so like one for water/ice, one for fire, one for weapon making, ect. Edward can complete a transmutation circle just by clapping his hands because of all the secrets the door told him. Armstrong has transmutation circles on his iron knuckles, and Mustang has circles on his flint gloves.

    Armstrong has transmutation circles etched into his gauntlets and Mustang has one on his glove. Alchemists need some sort of circle to channel the energy for transmutations, that's what makes Edward special. He knows how to create a transmutation circle using his own body by clapping his hands. Hope this helps.

    ...also I know the beginning is a little rushed, but I cannot believe how much the crew is failing. I mean they say transmute in every episode and Lust just called Envy by his name :D
    its becoming clear, as i notice it on other reactions as well, that they dont turn up the volume enough and have trouble hearing sometimes.
    i suggest writing on their twitter if you want them notified.

People have a right to be frustrated. if they don't enjoy it they don't have to do it. they have to be open with their patreons if they really want to make quality content. if they weren't into anime theyhey should've said it. keep thinking animated content is stupid and you'll miss out on some of the finest content in recent history while live action keeps pumping out mindless blockbusters.

    The glyphs, called Transmutation Circles, are what allows an Alchemist to use their alchemy. It is 100% absolutely required for alchemy to work...except for Ed. The knowledge fed to him by the Truth (creepy little ghost kid he saw through the chaos door during episode 2) allows Ed to perform alchemy without the need for a Transmutation Circle. That is what makes him so amazing. To compare it to something like Harry Potter, he is doing a super complex spell without an incantation, wand movement, or indeed a wand itself. All he has to do is clap his hands to form the circle with himself.

  • @linkinpark227
    @linkinpark227 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Edward is special as he doesn't need the glyphs. Everyone else uses them in varying ways, usually having the glyphs inscribed onto something they use. Armstrong in particular uses his metal gloves to augment himself.

    12:00 He doesn't need a transmutation circle because of the portal. The Gate of Truth.
    When an Alchemist performs human transmutation, they gain the knowledge to use Alchemy without drawing the circles (They make a "ring" with their hands when clapping. Like Scar said). But they also lose something in return. (Something that in a way relates to the person they were trying to bring back in a way)

  • @The_Sigillite
    @The_Sigillite 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    The circles are called "Transmutation Circles" and they are required for all but a few to use alchemy. Anyone you see performing alchemy without drawing one will either have one visible on their person or be like Edd who has seen the "Truth" and can use alchemy without a circle. The nature of the circle dictates the limits of the alchemy and creating one is a science in and of itself.

    All the other alchemists use transmutation circles in some way; they've just usually got it etched into their clothing or tools, or as tattoos on their bodies so that they won't have to stop and spend tons of time drawing out these complicated circles.
    Roy Mustang, for example, has his transmutation circle on the back of his gloves.
    For me, the worst dream I ever had was when I was a little kid and I went to say good night to my parents, but when I touched them they turned into cacti. I panicked and went to my brother for help, but he turned into a cactus as well, and by the end of the dream the entire world was just an endless prickly dead wasteland of cacti.
    I was like 5 at the time, so the dream made quite the impression. :P Remember it so clearly still after nearly twenty years.

    All alchemists need glyph or what they actually called transmutation circle, they just just the circle tattoo on to their hand, or in Mustang case on to his glove. However, if an alchemist perform a human transmutation, they look into the gate of Truth, like Ed did in episode 2, they don't need the transmutation circle, because they already known everything about alchemy

    Just FYI, they do all use glyphs. Some alchemists have them premade like tattoos, engraving, woven into clothing, etc. Ed does use a circle, he just makes it with his body when he puts his hands together, it's not a common skill. Yes, Alphonse can use alchemy too.

    Alchemists use transfusion(I forgot how to spell dont kill me) circles to change the forms of matter. I assume the circles basically allow them to channel the matter or somethin. But those who have seen the 'Truth'(Big door Ed whent into) can use alchemy without transfusion circles.

    Armstrong and mustang have glyphs on their gloves everyone has to use some sort of circle to use alchemy and high level alchemists have created their own unique glyphs. A glyph is only good for doing one specific thing, like freezing, creating fire or explosions. And it takes time to use any glyph as a catalyst for creating something new, some even need specific elements to transmute. Ede is special because he doesn't need specific glyphs, he creates a circle with his arms clapping his hands together and figuring out what he need as elements to make the new thing on the fly.

  • @samedtulum43
    @samedtulum43 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    To make it clear.You need a transmutationcircle to do use alchemie. People who seem like not using a circle, have a circle somewhere on their body or clothing/armor. Mustang for example has a circle on his gloves. Armstrong on his metalglove things. Scar has a tattoo on his arm. The only "excuse" are people that saw the truth. Like Edward did. Those people know how to use their bodies to create a circle.

    Edward is a special kind of alchemist (because remember when he was captured by that god thing he was thrown into the portal of knowledge) and because of that he dont need to create a Transmutation Circle to use alchemy instead he do this clapping thing where he put his arm together like praying, unlike other state alchemist that needs to have a tattoo of the circle or draw the circle to transmutate.

  • @MrMarti2187

    It helps to think of alchemy in terms of real life chemistry. In chemistry, when you have your ingredients and you want a finished product, you need all sort of things like catalytic agents, reaction medium, beakers, flasks and so on. An alchemist skips all that substitutes it with a "Transmutation Circle". Basically, drawing the circle with all those glyphs is an alternative to setting up a chemistry lab.
    In chemistry, if you know the reaction process and you have the right equipment (and ingredients), you can make the reaction take place no matter who you are. Similarly, any alchemist can perform any transmutation if they understand the process and can set up the transmutation circle. Also, as with chemists, different alchemists have different areas of expertise - reactions that they are a lot more comfortable with than any layman. However, like an expert chemist can look at a setup and determine what kind of reaction its for, an expert alchemist can look at a transmutation circle and figure out what its supposed to do. For example, when Mustang saw the transmutation circle in Elrics' basement, he immediately figured it out that that was for human transmutation.
    Alphose is an example of your regular alchemist - he needs to draw the transmutation circle and all those glyphs to make a reaction happen. That's why you don't see him using it in combat that often because there is no time to draw all of it in the middle of a fight. But we have seen him use alchemy both in episodes 1 and 3.
    State Alchemists who see combat often come prepared with their preferred transmutation circles - which usually happens to be their area of expertise. Roy had his transmutation circle on the glove, while Armstrong had his etched on the metal gauntlets he uses in the fight. Basque Gran - the alchemist who got killed last episode - also had metal gauntlets with glyphs all over them.
    Edward is a special case because he doesn't need a transmutation circle at all. In terms of a chemist, he is making the reaction happen without any lab equipment and with just the raw materials. But he still needs to know how the reaction works in order to make it happen. That is the only thing stopping him for using alchemy from other fields - his lack of expertise in them.

    basicly how the gliphs work is that all alchemist except those who saw that god thing must use gliphs but you can just write expecific gliphs on your weapons for example the fire guy has a fire making gliph on his gloves same goes for strongarm with his alchemy and his gloves etc etc etc but all will be revealed in time oh and the armor brothers name is alphonse pronounceded alfonsu and what they do is called transmutation

    To who ever reads these comments for the crew, please let them know that Armstrong and Mustang have to use circles to do their alchemy. The circles are on Mustang's white gloves and Armstrong's circles are on his metal brass knuckles. Also Mustang's gloves work like a flint.
    The glyphs represent different elements, like the glyphs on Mustang's circles has a very noticeable glyph of a newt. And newts usually represent fire in alchemy and other legends.
    So yes, glyphs are VERY important to execute alchemy correctly.

    For the whole Ishval War (or Ishbal, depending on translation) debate: yes, it was genocide of innocent people parallel to World War II. Even Mustang said that "in a way Scar's revenge is justified." But the point is that there were soldiers there (like Mustang, Armstrong and McDougal "the Ice Dude" from episode 1) who were only following orders, and those who were bloodthirsty murderers (like Kimblee, the guy in prison from episode 1). It wasn't all black and white, much was happening behind the scenes.

    Everyone needs transmutation Circles to use alchemy, the flame alchemist has his on his gloves, armstrong has his on his gauntlets.
    What makes Edward unigue is that he uses his body as the Transmutation Circle, it's a trick he got from performing human alchemy. It will be explained more, but the jist is when you perform human alchemy you see the "truth" and learn clapping transmutation

    I know this is old but essentially alchemy is a science. Anyone can do alchemy just like anyone has the potential to be a rocket scientist. People specialize in specific kinds of alchemy and the state alchemist specialize in alchemy that can be used in combat. They have a specific method or righting style according to their specialization. They need those circles or glyphs as a medium to perform their alchemy. It isn’t noticable but mustang has a circle on his gloves and Armstrong has something similar on iron knuckles he wears. At this point you know Ed can perform alchemy without a circle because he saw the truth he tried to bring his mom back so he can use his body by clasping his hands together to make a circle and use his body as the conduit instead of the glyphs

  • @MiosPanties

    All alchemy requires the use of an alchemical circle. The Fullmetal Alchemist doesn't need to use one because he saw the Truth when he got pulled through that magical door by all those black arms.
    Armstrong has alchemical circles on his gauntlets. Mustang has circles on his gloves. Scar's source of power will be revealed later.

    Their are only few people who can use alchemy without an alchemy circle all other alchemist need the circles though. The reason you don't see people like Armstrong using circles is because they have equipment with the circles on them like Armstrong's gauntlets or Mustangs gloves.
