Opeth Interview
We had the distinct privilege of talking to Mikael Akerfeldt and Fredrick Åkesson from Swedish Prog-metal behemoths Opeth. Both guys are phenomenal talents and we relished the opportunity to sit in the backstage dressing room of the illustrious Barrowlands Ballroom in Glasgow.
We talk about guitars, writing, touring, inspiration, plectrums and longevity in an increasingly tough business. In the end we spoke for well over half an hour as the guys had so many interesting things to tell us!
We’d like to thank Mikael and Fredrik for their time and candour as well as Steve, Opeth’s tour manager and Michelle, Opeth’s PR, for making this happen for us. - เพลง
Interviewer was fantastic. Witty enough to carry a conversation, affable enough to put the musicians at ease, clearly did his research as well. Good stuff.
All you need is an interviewer who is actually interested. It shows so right here. Great stuff, thank you!
Cheers man, Ray is the MAN when it comes to interviews! 😁
Ironic how I can understand those swedish gentlemen better than the native speaker interviewer...
He's a Glaswegian, so its 'hard' to understand him. Are you an American?
deathincarnate Atheist I think that's a problem for every non-british 'english speaker'. We are taught a basic accentless english.
deathincarnate Atheist No, I'm italian. I think you're right, besides, why should you be taught English slangs/accents?
I've watched nearly every Opeth interview I can find, and this one is particularly nice. I like that it feels very much like a conversation rather than an awkward interview with all the same old questions. I felt like I was hanging out with the guys!
exactly!
Mikael should definitely solo more on the newer records. Love his tasteful bluesy solos
"We once labeled our genre as forest metal" YES THEY DID! I remember it. Might of been an interview from around 2003 or something where Akerfeldt called it "progressive forest metal." Their sound and the fantastic album art might of been responsible for that. Opeth still has a bit of the forest in their music I think.
I call that unique _sound_ they have; "Opeth Weather" :).
Mikael is like the proud dad, so many compliments to Fredrick. Beyond humble and great to see the love between them. Also Fredrick throwing out Skwisgaar Skwigelf as he sits there casually haha
And plays his guitar in between answering questions! So adorable and amazing at the same time
My two favourite accents in one video, Swedish and Scottish
Oh the ever so humble Mikael. I was there at first row. He had a blackout during the solo but it wasn't that bad and the show was awesome. cristal clean sound and beatiful songs.
What exactly does he mean by blacking out?
Suncross66 lost consciousness
Not really. He forgot the solo :) He played somthing but not what he supposed to play.
Which song was it
I think it was hope leaves.
huge man crush on Mikael
Me too
That's gay bruh
Amir Bakian
Momentary
That's a lovely scarf and cardigan
Great sense of humour :/
Tis very lovely...
It gets no more death metal than that lol
Man’s looking dapper
I love how Fredrik just cannot keep his hands off the guitar
Right? That's the sign of a truly dedicated guitarist. Always noodling.
I really enjoyed listening to this interview.
Great interviewer, -really good!
One of their best interviews. Great job by the interviewer! :)
Cheers man, thanks for checking it out!
excellent interview, less than 10 minutes in and this is serious quality for any Opeth fan. So happy in the last few years to see Opeth getting bigger and bigger doing exactly what they want to do. Opeth changed my life my first year of high school, the autumn Watershed came out and they were definitely getting bigger by 2008 but the ride hasn't stopped! Opeth has always been about dynamic music for me, unlike anything else. Between Opeth and Pain of Salvation, Sweden really has a couple of special bands for the last 20+ years. (And I'm always ready to hear more!)
...finally an Opeth interview I am interested in and watch with enjoyment.
Great insight into the mind of a song writing genius. Mikael is my hero !!!
wow fredrick, typical guitarist. trying to have a conversation with them and they just play
yashamaruism dammit, I’m a musician not a conversationalist!
He's one of the best guitar players in the world and almost no one knows his name.
@@theuniversewithin74 Yes! I'll bet arch enemy regrets kicking him out. Guitarists don't get much better than Fredrick..
Some of these interviews can be excruciating both for the interviewees and those of us watching, especially when you pick up on a vibe that tells you the musicians would rather eat their own flesh. However this one(along with the Gibson Guitar series)is very enjoyable as he(the interviewer),brings Michael and Frederick into the conversation early on and displays no ego whatsoever. The Opeth guys also have the good grace to listen to his questions in their entirety.Good stuff, thanks.
Pretty good interview w a knowledgeable and charismatic interviewer!
Great interview. Interviewer knows his stuff.
Scrolling through my recommendations when I recognized the background of your thumbnail... "Autumn Opeth" Taken right out of my deviant art gallery. Nice. 😑
Very nice and elaborate interview :)
actually a really good interview. i loved the nerdy stuff
Absolute professionals!!!
Thanks for having us.
really good conversation
Cheers!
Legends!
Storm corrosion 2. Yes please 🙏
Sm57 as an interview mic, rock n roll! 🤟
Let's say someone more important to music than Bach or Mozart noticed me while he asked what song his band should play. Play each of them. Better than the litany of western music, and among the most significant contributers. May you win a Nobel Prize for your poems.
Great interview, thanks.
BTW saw Opeth in Bristol a few weeks ago and they were fantastic.
Steve Rogers me too
I had tickets for the Bristol show but was too ill to go, just my luck :)
I do the same thing with the ax8...use a real wah pedal instead of the built in..then you get more dsp(and it sounds better to me)...also a real octa fuzz...those and ax8 has most everything I need ....
I wish I was Mikael and Fredriks best friend! Top guys!
HAIL TO OPETH
Duuuuude they play Moon Above Sun Below now?!?! Fuck they need to come back my way
Under 300views? Criminal! This is a great interview!
J A Y yeah horrible work by the camera guy. Plus the interviewer accent is so thick it's really fatiguing to listen to for non native speakers.
Marco Campbell I can understand for non natives, true statement
Marco Campbell: And a non-native accent would be exhausting to listen to for native speakers. I would hope they don’t go around telling German/Italian/French, etc. interviewers to start speaking like Ryan fucking Seacrest lmao.
😍 OPETH 🤘🏼❤️
On the left we have 2017, in the middle 1968 and on the right 1974.
0'15 the look of Mikael at the 'mic at use' says it all :) dude who told u to take sm57 for an interview?? Id understand it if the interview was with Hetfield but c'mon! :D peace
Opeth should be waaaaay more popular.
Never thought I'd see Brian Thompson interviewing Opeth.
I love Toki and Murderface
Merely the hint of the possibility of another Storm Corrosion album gave me serious wood.
I need another title track like Storm Corrosion (the song) in my life. and the whole record besides. folk driven, fantastical folklorish prog/experimental. damn!
@@aniketsanyal5586 A masterpiece beyond words.
"Thanks for having us..."
love how that beautiful Stealthy PRS is just sitting there By Mikael's side in silence ..
Is it Enslaved playing in the background?
Yep. They were awesome that night.
Two of the Three Musketeers
just pause the video at the 0:08 and look mikael and fredrik eyes.
why did you make Fredrick look like a little boy in the thumbnail!?
this is the moment fredrik turned into skwisgaar skwigelf
they do the homework.......... every amateur musician......... knows.... that bitter feeling.......
These two no longer with PRS? Wouldn't mind one of those Fredrik Åkesson signature models.
Between the two, I'm in agreement with you, I like the neck binding. How does that effect playability? I've no idea. It's just a looks thing. It still matters, lol, dont want to play something that you feel looks lame.I will maybe be able to afford one in 20 years.
That interviewer pronounced "Opeff"
F in chat for camera 2
I just want to ear Mikael' s voice 🤭😅
23:39 lol
I love Opeth but i like how feminin Mikael Really is 😂
Hugh Jackman is a good interviewer
Fred is such is an axeman he can't keep his fingers off the strings!
I hear a lot of shit about their newer music... I still don’t get what’s to hate... sure it’s not metal, but it’s still not for the faint of heart...
ask michel if he is going to growl ny day again?
these swedes speak English better than most Americans LOL
Far too many people are incapable of going 3seconds without saying the word like. Every time, and I mean every single time, I pass young US girls/women in the street, I hear: "you know, and she's like, and I'm like, ya know it's kinda like...' Do these people ever think?
Lady Hamilton's Pussy the interviewer is from Scotland btw
Interviewers need to not interrupt constantly and not come from a frame of knowing more about every subject they ask about. I enjoyed the interview when the band were talking
enslaved
I can't understand the interviewer 😭 and there's no subs
He's drunk
Fred looks unenthusiastic lol
interviewer needs to calm down and say 50% fewer words
Why does Mikael look like a mom in this 😂
I would imagine the "scarf" is up to his chin because he doesn't want to catch a cold, for his vocal chords ;).
Hullo Opeth guys.... Flubbb flubb glughh flubb glubbyity glubb fulk duk duljy cool hoarse fulk funnily buggy funnily gubblitty cool.... Etc
Why is Mikael dressed like an old lady? lol
this interviewer mumbles a lot
Does mikael still have balls?
3 Nirvana fans saw this.
It Sucks................
Mikael looks like such a pretentious artist with that scarf. Or he looks like he’s heading to blog at a Star bucks.
Wrong, he is a legend!
They’re from Sweden it’s freakin cold lol
Dude, he can't sing if he gets a "cold", especially when you get older, you gotta' take care of your throat/vocal chords.
The interviewer is awful, very thick accent and he seems to know more than the band.
Filming at shows is inevitable, and a distraction. At least Opeth are gentlemen and are not sour about it.
Best advice for starting in the music biz: "Get a neck tattoo" :)
Yer right, I've no problem with how he speaks but he talks too much when the musicians should be speaking. He almost knew everything, from their piezo to solos.
