P.S. Mikael is without a doubt one of, if not THE most underrated musical geniuses at composition of his generation! The depth and musical maturity of his “structures” IMO rivals the great classical composers.
That's because Mikael is heavily 60's and 70's influenced, very few metal musicians are like him in the sense that they combine old rock with metal and aren't afraid to experiment with the sounds that creates.
The most interesting part of this whole thing other than the lesson is mikaels line about having a verse in a song. Normally songwriters slave over parts to fit into a rigid song structure. Intro chorus Verse chorus verse bridge solo chorus outro etc.. Mikaels songs don’t follow really any sort of traditional song structure. On grand conjugation the “verse” fits perfectly within the context of the song. It’s like this eerie build almost like footsteps before the explosion of the riff. With that little fingerpicking part harmonizing with it to, it’s just, NOBODY writes music like this. It’s what makes Their music so special. It’s not if it’s heavy. It’s not if it’s soft. It’s how interesting he composes. Especially with no knowledge of music theory. He’s a serious talent.
Opeth has been my favorite band for years and somehow I found my way to this video by randomly discovering The Zombies album he refers to and reading the wiki page for it where this video is linked. Small world.
what is crazy is that I don't even like metal music but I love these guys, & I suppose it is because both of them have gone back and found music to inspire them. much of this music was made before they were born , music that I was listening to before these two guys were born as I am 16 years older than Mikael almost to the very day. 16 years & two days to be exact.
People compose music with theory even if they claim to not know much or any. Theory is more of an understanding of the language of music rather than a blueprint on how to make music. All music is just sounds that connect to each other. The connections that make the notes sound good together are keys, riffs are like sentences, and any other facet of a song are just parts of an ongoing conversation with the vibrations around you. Music theory helps you communicate these musical statements with a common language that everyone can understand. Mikael has a great ear obviously for things that flow together. You don’t need to have knowledge of theory if you have an ear that understands how things go together naturally.
@@xkmmx2132 Yup. I started studying music theory on my own a few years back, and even though it's fun and helpful to know theory, having good ears is far more important. I think everything comes down to the level of musical intuition one has: obviously, Mikael is superbly intuitive and the knowledge of music is embodied in him.
'TONY IOMMI' that is all you have to say to this Belmont... Ahhh the beauty of good Black/Doom Metal soundings with a PRS is also great with my BLACK SG of Honor
Hm, I always thought this was open d minor... Alice in chains - Over now is open d major, take the G string and drop it a half step to change it from major to minor :)
The lick at 11:06. So hard to figure out the notes he is playing. Poor video quality be damned! Why oh why didn't they slow that down? This is killing me.
Please tell me that a lot of successful metal musicians don't rely on non-standard tunings, guitar tone, persistence and business acumen to be successful.
sbgrant actually opeth is probably the best example of metal musicians not relying on alternate tunings to be successful being that a good 90-95% of their songs are in standard tuning or just capoing a fret
sbgrant Another great example is Metallica. They used to play standard tuning (probably until 94) after that, they changed just for half step down. I saw an interview of James Hetfield (classic albums: black album) and he said that he didn't know nothing about music theory and even chord names. And he's one of the most successful metal musicians, besides being the best metal rhythm guitar ever!
sbgrant Ghost Reveries is the only Opeth album that even touches that tuning... everything else they've ever done has been in either standard or Drop D. As Daniel D'Ambrosio said, Mikael is arguably the best example of a metal musician staying within conventional tuning and writing original material.
"I don't know shit about theory, it was just a chord I thought sounded nice." lmao!!!

It's how he comes up with odd riffs like 11:25 or the one in Deliverance.. the guy is a genius.

Thanks

Form someone that doesn't know shit about theory mikael composed really complex stuff.
He came across as pretty modest in this, put I think he's an amazing guitarist and composer.
Not really, it is very simple.
Michael are u guhtrie govan?
@@styot Sorry, have to say it, great pic
@@michaelnoneofyabusiness9566 saying Opeth is simple is the most ignorant statement anybody could make
Michael is a God of metal
"Very simple"
Mikael is a huge troll lol
It is actually really simple to play. The only hard part is the string skipping in the opening riff
O man, that tone!
Mikael's vibrato is so good
It really is. He has tremendous vibrato and phrasing!
I think what they mean is that great guitar players have a signature timbre. To me that's an important concept some musicians overlook
I always love the opeth guitar lessons..
11:27 one of the most evil sounding riffs ever
Akerfeldt's tone sounds so fucking win!
I'm sure the amp is sick,...but the guitar really helps
4:47 Fredrik winks his eye

You know that your life’s work was worth it when Mikael says something you did was a masterpiece!
That guitar tone is so devilish 😂
I can't figure out how to play the 'so simple' blues lick.
DADFAE seriously wtf
It sounds really good :)
It's DADFAD actually, even weirder ^^'
DADFAE is an open d minor add 9 -chord, while removing the high E makes it just an open d minor. It doesn't sound so cool then imho d:
metal4bld DADFAE is Ghost Of Perdition

How the hell he doesn´t know anything about theory and compose this kind of stuff, seriosuly WTF!!!!

Slow down on the 2nd part of the solo! It's an easy solo, and sounds great, but the notes are hard to decipher.
