Being a Canadian, I can tell you truthfully that the public knows virtually nothing about JTF2. They don't publicize anything they do. Occasionally something shows up in the news, as is inevitable, but the US Navy SEALS get written about in the media _a lot_ more than JTF2. It is known where their base is in Ontario, or rather where some of them work out of, but virtually nothing else is known here in Canada. I have read that the American special forces like working with them because they know what they are doing, and with that you have basically exhausted my knowledge of them. And I think JTF2 likes to keep it that way.

All I know is, if any of them came to my house to arrest me, I'd be in jail before I even knew what was happening. And if they came in to kill me, I'd be dead without even knowing what the hell happened, nor who the hell killed me.
They're all absolute legends, and that's all that matters, I respect them all, I wouldn't even dream of being nearly as badass as them!

@@HP-le3no thing is, it doesn't really matter does it? They do what they're supposed to do, accomplish their mission the way they're supposed to.
I'm from Portugal, the most special of our special forces are the DAE, I guess it could be translated to Special Actions Detachment.
And every special force that has trained with them, has gone on record, on how regardless of the outdated equipment, they can do the exact same job as them.
This to say, it doesn't matter, at least to me, who the best is. It only matters to me, that these guys kill the fucking terrorists, and don't come for me, I want to live a little bit longer!

All tier one units practice with live ammo, including room clearance with live personnel acting as hostages. It's to build trust with one another and to demonstrate that they can kill all the bad guys and none of the good guys. It's extreme, and is only done after repeated demonstration of their competence, but is necessary. I would want to be with guys that can do the mission under that pressure as well, in practice before going after hostiles. It probably also helps weeds out the guys who can't make their headshots before the live people are in the room due to the pressure of knowing the requirements in the end. I'm simply recounting what I've read (Rob O'Neil, Pete Blaber, Tom Satterly and many, many other first hand accounts).

In Gulf War 2, the Alliance specifically chose 150 of the Aussie SAS to be the first line to infiltrate/destroy key targets in Iraq prior to the other major forces going in....100% success on the mission, Zero casualties. At the very end of the GIGN selection and training, the recruits have to pass the « Trust shot » (« Tir de confiance » in French). Their instructors basically stand in front of the recruit at 25 meters with a reinforced body armor and a target on the center of it, the recruit has to hit the target with a revolver. It basically shows the instructor saying « We’re at the end of training, to me I trained you right. I now trust you. Prove me I’m right. ». Every single GIGN operators passed this « Trust shot ». It can seem a little odd, but that’s how they do the thing and it proved its efficiency for decades now.

Answer: There is no practical purpose. The benefits supposedly gained by training this way do not justify the risk of the PM or H.R.H. taking a bullet between the eyes. The GIGN operator shooting his buddy with a revolver is called “le tir de confiance” (French for “trust shot”). It closes the training course and is meant to seal the trust that GIGN operators have in each other. Since they often fight in very confined spaces, they have to know that their buddy’s aim is on point, hence the “trust shot”.

About the GIGN revolver: this is MR73 model. The gun was designed for them, it has been test proofed to 300 000 shot of .357 Magnum, and each gun is factory tested for accuracy. It has been in use for a long time but today it’s more a weapon for tradition. You won’t see it in operation anymore. Today you can see the MR73 like a M1 Garand or M14 for some parade units.
GIGN being a police force doesn’t operate only against terrorist. GIGN speciality is to arrest people who snapped a wire, and maybe took their family hostage without killing them. They manage to arrest a lot of these guy with a single shot of .357 in the shoulder or things like that.
So a lot of emphasise is put in the group on accuracy shooting.
So the firing with MR73 is called “tir de confiance” or “trust shot”.
This isn’t a regular training but more a ritual with a traditional weapon when they end the long training and are accepted in the group.

There's high power loads, so when they need to neutralise, 100% certain, it's not a bad choice, even though it doesn't have the ammo of your Glocks 17 19 etcThe French marksman course is as tough as it gets, groundbreaking. With being a colonial power once, it has potential hostage scenarios, pan-global. The cons of using a revolver for the GIGN was the double action but Manhurin resolved that by offering a single action which allowed rapid fire while still achieving match precision. Hence why it was selected as main handgun of the GIGN. It was in the 70s and remained through the age as it proved its efficiency in some emblematic interventions of the GIGN.

Epreuve finale de la formation, qui consiste à tirer à balles réelles sur une cible en argile à quinze mètres, placée sur un gilet pare-balles porté par un camarade. There is something I fundamentally do not understand about the statement "Most special forces learned from the sas, therefore they're number 1 on the list." How are they the best anymore if everyone copies their methods and they have taught their allies their methods? Multiple countries could now be building upon those foundations that the SAS might have set in stone, competing against one another and innovating new methods in the process to advance in warfare. The Spartans were the best at one point in history, but were bested by those who built upon their foundational principals and tactics to further engineer more effective methods of combat aka (The Macedonians.) Militaries and soldiers throughout history have been doing that the whole way through till now. Just because one entity builds the foundation, it does not entitle them to being the best once someone takes their findings and further builds upon them. Thats how warfare advances, by constantly finding new ways to do things. I think in todays age, most of the "best" special forces are pretty well all around equal. In terms of skillsets, you can only measure the man himself. But I do have a suspicion, that we haven't been given the names of the task forces, who truly would be considered the elite of the elite. There are already documents of their being such task units online.

The case in point here was that the spartans had mastered a form of warfare utilizing the phalanx form and the Macedonians improved on and beat them with their own modified version of the phalanx. #2 I do believe the SAS have indefinitely improved their tactics over 70 years of being in motion, but again, that beckons the question, wouldn't most of the other countries who have learned from them, be making strategic improvements, innovations and advancements on those principals just as the SAS are? Perhaps the States or Canada or any other allied country at this point in time, houses an extraordinary mind making a breakthrough in modern warfare tactics by using the original formula and is changing the game as we speak, just by simply building on what the SAS have developed. That's how warfare works and is why there hasn't been one sole specific country to carry "The best" mantle throughout history.

The reason I said the Seals are not the most elite is that while they operate on land, air, and sea their training has more emphasis on the sea. So why is it so wrong to suggest that a certain group of people are better than others at special operations?

As usual, another great video, with superb commentary from your good self, Sir. Now, I apologise in advance for such a long post!! But i wanted to be reasonably thorough, but not write a whole thesis!! So:
Many of the same thoughts ran through my head at almost exactly the moment that you voiced them. So here’s a brief, not-exhaustive list of some of those thoughts:
1 - I take a LOT of the info given in any video like this, with a pinch of salt. Because the narrator literally says “Their operations are totally shrouded in mystery….” But then goes on to quote (allegedly accurate) stats, like how many terror cell leaders they killed (they do that with several of the entries BTW),
2 - (This one is LONG btw) - Pakistan: I agree totally that Pakistan has at times been less than ideal as an ally. Apart from the famous lack of help during Operation Neptune Spear (that you mentioned), in 2006 there was a Huge, widely reported Terror Plot to mix liquids held in “gimmicked” soda bottles and cans, creating explosions that would have been small - but at 30,000 feet, still easily enough to blow a 747 out of the sky. It was later estimated that the plan was for up to 15 Jumbos being attacked almost at the same time. The loss of life would have been far worse that on 9/11. All the flights were planned to be from the 3 International London airports (London’s Heathrow, Gatwick & Stansted), and meant to land at various symbolic US Airports (JFK, O’Hare, etc). So a huge operation was started, to ‘smash’ the terror cell. It centred on CIA, NSA, FBI (+ others), and their UK Counterparts, MI6, MI5, GCHQ, & NCA (+ others). In summary, after months of surveillance, reconnaissance & more, of multiple planners in both London & Pakistan, the whole plot was foiled at the last minute, with dozens of arrests and terrorist charges, across London, and some in Pakistan.
BUT, the ‘Chief Planner’ was in a compound in Pakistan (deja vue?). And for weeks, a Bond-style operation was done, where, by agreement with the UK, Pakistani authorities would swoop in and catch him red-handed, with computer running, phones ringing, etc. He was second only to Bin Laden in importance. And somehow, amazingly, he was tipped off at the last minute - as it turns out, from well placed sources, by a General in the PK Military, who was a second or third cousin - and he vanished into safe dwellings in the PK hills. So….. Pakistan is often a “Frien-emy”, with divided allegiances, no doubt.
3 - I think the whole idea of ‘rating’ SF units from around the world, is misguided and not of much use, in general. For example - so much of their work is classified, that, by definition, we don’t even know enough to rank them in a meaningful way.
Then, different units are masters of different aspects of SF work. So to say for example that a Swedish SF unit is better because they endure super-cold conditions, with ice, snow, etc, compared with say Kenyan SF (who are also awesome, btw) is meaningless, because the Kenyans may be amazing in super-hot, jungle climates, where the Swedes would fold. It’s just impossible to make meaningful comparisons, IMO. They are all amazing troops - “the best of the best” - but in their own, niche ways.
4 - Lastly, I would say that there’s another problem with these ‘lists’: the top few spots are very predictable. But often, its because of fame, or notoriety, Hollywood - or even a political thing at play. So, EVERYONE knows that in any list like this, Delta Force, SAS, SEALs (especially Team Six), then, say, SBS, Spetznas, Mossad (or Shin Bet) are going to likely appear. For example, The SAS were almost unheard of before Operation Nimrod (the Iranian Embassy siege), and, SEAL Team Six was basically unknown to the average person, before the Bin Laden raid. But now, your (very funny!) comment at 10:50 - “We KNOW, Lady..” - says it all. But we know so little, that, IMO, these lists are more compiled by ‘pop culture’, recent-ish events, the movies, myth and mystery….. So, I only use these lists as a rough guide or for curiosity, rather than hard fact.

About GIGN "dumb shoot" : it's the "trust shoot" (tir de confiance). One of the last part of formation. The multi purpose, psychologically and physically :
When you're the target : challenge the trust in your team mate. Feel the sensation of been targeted and shooted. (Accept the inevitable and don't escape) Feel the physical sensation of impact.
For the shooter : realise the importance of the shoot and the impact of your duty and choice.
It's linked to their motto : « S'engager pour la vie ». There is multi meaning here : first is that you risk your life; next, your will learn lesson which guides all your lifetime; and, the most important in fact, is that you have, as possible, to don't kill anybody, even "enemy". The shoot to kill is the last choice, when the risk for hostage/ civilian is too big, cause you have to deal with extremist suicider.
I hope my English is good enough to make you understand the concept of this exercise. (It's clearly not for TV show. It's just a iconic part of what is the level of their engagement)
You can find all explanation in books of Prouteau, who is a founder of this team. He give the philosophy followed, and few unbelievable info of the beginning. (One of the most impressive story is the test which is given by politic minister to prove the efficiency of the concept : from sea, reach a military French base, enter inside, "take" a submarine, give a call, get out of the base and go back to sea without been seen/ detected. They almost succeed : the problem they face was at the end, when they get back to sea : ordinary gendarmes have discover their canoe hidden on the beach, so they had to manage the problem without giving any explain. This give a "crushed kepi incident" which is very savourous to read. )

Yeah, it's especially to build trust.
For example, if to get a wounded or to go to cover you have to go in the line of fire of your teammates for some reason, you know they won't be shooting at you because they are proficient enough. You know they won't injure you. And that's also how they are able to do live firing exercises without killing each other.

Considering that some of the special forces have joint training and they swap technology it´s probably moot to try and rank one as the best. The SAS delivered some flashbangs to the GSG9 for raiding the Landshut and provided advice.
Apart from that some of the units are police forces (e. g. the GSG9).
