I was expecting La'an to be freaking out at really feeling her emotions, Uhura being utterly disgusted at how strong everything smell, and Pike freaking out because now he can see in a wider light spectrum.
I kind of wonder if maybe there will be another scene where they get another injection that quiets their emotions that has a wear off effect like with Spock in S1E1 of SNW?
I saw this clip this morning and, yeah, the instant change of hairstyles without so much as a quick visit from a Bolian barber, that's one powerful serum, though I will say, there's something highly appealling about Vulcan ladies (been a thing for me as long back as Dr. Selar on the Enterprise-D), even if they're only temporary ones............

What I saw going through Spock's mind. Sickbay scene: Spock is half Vulcan logically. Spock: Ahh. I can see now how that can be annoying. Pike: Beam 4 1/2 Vulcans down. Spock: WTF! Marvel and Star Wars have all the good hallway scenes. Strange New Worlds: "Hold our Bloodwine."
Ahole is not a Vulcan genetic trait. It is a learned behavior. So is emotional disapline. I like your take. I am here to enjoy this show. Too many others are only ready to complain because they have expectations and get upset if the showrunners don't read their minds and give them what they think they should get. It just spoils the fun!
I've been watching Trek since the 80s and I think Strange New Worlds is amongst the very best of it and has taken on it's own identity. I just hope they don't push it too far down the comedy route and it can still deal with the complex matters Trek is known for tackling.
I think I would like it much more if it wasn't about Spock's love life. The rest of the material is pretty good but, good lord, I am over Spock angsting over women.
I've seen a lot of backlash about this preview just isn't realistic, as physical changes wouldn't confer cultural changes. And I don't disagree. But at the same time, I enjoy playing it for drama and for humor and I'm willing to waive off that aspect.
I also just put it down to the fact that they're using a serum created by hyper advanced interdimensional aliens, and they're attempting to mod it even though they don't understand how and why it works. The effects of the original serum (and the initial "edit" the aliens did on him before the serum undid it) on Spock were nonsensical as well. He should still have been hyper logical, etc. Even moreso, because he was dealing with damped down human emotions, and no longer had to contend with strong Vulcan emotions. But instead he became "culturally" human. We can only assume that that was a deliberate effect conveyed by the aliens, both in their initial edit and in the serum. The hair thing though, there's just not explanation for that kind of thing. It's pure Hollywood.
People are freaking out about them acting logical but we don't have the full context of what happened before this clip. Maybe there's a scene before this where they explain that they'll be logical and keep their emotions in check cause of x techno babble. Maybe Spock mind melded with them previously to help them ground themselves like Tuvok did to Suder, who ended up being logical for a limited amount of time after his meld. SNW has been pretty good about respecting canon so i don't think it's time to get the pitchforks out until we see the full episode. Now if there isn't an explanation then that is a huge miss.
Also, the creators of this serum did the same "implant culture using genetic changes" thing to Spock in the previous episode. How? Who knows, they're hyper advanced inter-dimensional non-corporeal aliens. Why did they edit Spock like that, and then give the crew of Enterprise a serum with the same wacky abilities? Dunno, but I assume they're hyper advanced idiots. In any case, this is an already established effect, so I'm not sure why people are acting surprised or more concerned now then they were when this happened to Spock. It's kinda dumb, sure, but no more than it was last year.
The teaser allready gives away that 90% (as long as its not a flashback episode) la'an m'benga and ortegas survives the Gorn again. What makes me happy.
Not counting Spock, Li'an and Chris Chapel looked the most Vulcan of the crew. The striding down of Capt. Pike and crew down the corridor (with his twirling the Lirpa) seems a possible nod to the scene of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1 when Star Lord, Gamora, Rocket Raccoon, Groot and Drax came together as a real team. 🖖
A lot of people seem to have come down hard on the SDCC clips, but to me this looks like a heck of a lot of fun which is what 50% of the SNW episodes have been - the other 50% being the darker stuff - and I’m really looking forward to it.
I predict Pelia's, "that looks like fun," will go down as one of the most underrated comic lines of the season. :P And an FYI...I saw an interview from Variety during which it was stated Pike's hair was Anson's idea, and that as soon as they saw it in context, all the other options created for that scene were binned. :D
At first watch, the clip was funny, especially Pike's hair but when I thought about it, I was like, uhh. Like Vulcans learn to be "logical". Also, the ability to change DNA with a hypospray would've been useful in TOS, TNG, and DS9
I really like the look of all of them vulcanised (or whatever you might call that), but Pike's hair is a character on its own in this. I also really like the reference, Vulcan as a...I'm channeling my inner Mariner right now.
Like others, I was curious about the hair and the suddenly learned control of emotions, but I have faith. SNW has taken some very big swings at the fences in 2 seasons, and IMO, knocked them all out of the park. I'm approaching this episode with an open mind and an unexpected level of anticipation. SNW has proven they are the best Trek in years. And I, too, love Carol Kane. She grates on some, but I've loved her ever since I first saw her in "Scrooged". When they announced her addition, it was the only thing to help me get through my mourning for Hemmer
I'm pumped for season 3! I just don't understand the controversy this clip has garnered, some say it's offensive, others say it breaks canon... It's obviously being played for laughs. Some people just seemed to have lost their sense of humor
As hard as they hit the floor after that procedure and might have been prudent for them to do that procedure in a room with a nice thick shag carpeting
OK, that's it. I want the hypospray hairstyling from this Trek episode and River Song's spray-on formalwear from Doctor Who. You can get ready for any big occasion in under a minute. Perfection.
And a sonic shower. And the poop remover from Family guy. Step into the bathroom dirty, naked and having to go, step out 90 seconds later ready to attend a formal ball.
It shows that the original premise of Star Trek was more or less the right one. Yes, TNG added some background story arcs which, to be fair, added some extra colour to the storytelling, but by and large, kept the episodes episodic. With TOS, you could show the episodes in, mostly, any order and it would work. Once you start connecting things that gets harder. to do. IMHO, once the background stories become the foreground story, its so much harder to keep the interest up between episodes. This looks good though. What am I hoping for? Telling good stories.
I saw some folks feeling bad during this trailer at how they acted, said, and then talked to Spock. And i'm like... "hey, its a tv show. They did it this way for a reason. and its awesome"
Love the trailer but they have made one mistake and given away that Hemgony part II is survived by everyone taken by the Gorn at the end. Mbenga & Kirk were alwys safe but La'an and Otegas are all potenial chopping board material (Hemmer) as they are never heard of again in TOS
It looks like it will be funny, and I'm sure the cast had a blast. However, I am concerned about the lack of nuance and the broadness of the comedy. I worry that the show runners learned the wrong lesson from "Spock Amok". Just because Vulcan plotlines can be funny, doesn't mean they have to be.
I believe this is the end of the beginning of the episode. Probably somewhere around the middle of the season. The reason I believe this is the first part of the season will resolve the cliffhanger and then Christine will be going off to her fellowship. So this probably happens after that. I've heard Roger Corby will be appearing in at least one episode, probably towards the end of the season.
I just hope that season 3 has less humor/light hearted episodes than season 2. I don't want SNW to become a comedy show. Give me one funny episode. That will do.
I also like the deadpan humor of Pelia. Only problem is, as I non-native English speaker (Dutch) I can hardly understand her. Her voice is difficult to understand, so most of her lines go straight passed me.
I'm wondering if all the "Irregularities" people are noticing will also be noted in show and be seen as "wrong" only to lead to a treatment to return them to human.
Vulcan's never needed the Kohlinar, just get an injection from Nurse Chapel... the initial emotional outburst was amusing, but it takes years to suppress emotions as it's been stated, Vulcan's do have emotions and they are very strong. Treating Spock like garbage wasn't nice, especially from his so-called friends, you'd think their knowledge of Spock and newfound Vulcan logic would've stopped them from being such asshats.
I like strange new worlds better than most of the new trek. But how do they reconcile the events of this episode with the original TOS episode, the Enterprise incident where Kirk had to go through cosmetic surgery in order to pass as a romulan? Or the TNG episode, Unification where Picard and data how to get some kind of cosmetic surgery to also pass is romulans? Did they who's the technology of this serum injected into the Pike and the others? Why didn't nurse Chapel and lieutenant Uhura on Kirk's Enterprise remember being turned into Vulcans, while serving with Captain Pike? This is why I believe strange new worlds Star Trek is in a different universe/reality from the TOS Star Trek prime universe/reality. They've already confirmed the existence of a vast number of different universes/realities, not just the dark mirror universe. This is also how, I believe, they'll be able to have Pike escape his fate. It'll be explained that what he actually saw in that vision of him with radiation Burns and in a wheelchair, is but one possible fate in but one of many alternative realities.
I love/ hate that writers device where if someone is in pain or distress of some sort, parts of speech begin to disappear. Prepositions get the worst of it, but adverbs are pretty much gone, too. So "This serum is painful" becomes "Serum painful!" "Cant control emotion!" "Knees broken!" " Cereal soggy!" etc. I blame Shatner.
Yeah, annoyed that the crew were able to immediately master Vulcan Logic- man, every single Vulcan since Surak's time must've been just losers compared to these four. Wonder how long Spock was taking logic lesson from Uhura after this event...
On ribbing Spock for being only half vulcan: History shows that Spock has clearly exhibited a sense of superiority towards mere humans so many times (especially towards Dr McCoy), so the "pay back" once crew becomes more Vulcan than Spock and can fix things faster than Spock is to be expected and perhaps well deserved.
I think they time travelled to the past or they are in another universe/timeline. One way or another... the first contact between Vulcans and Humans hasn't happened [yet] and they have to keep their species a secret, in case they get discovered.
Did you see "The Cast of 'Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Tease New Characters & Plot Lines for Season 3" from Variety ???? There is talk of some pool o board which I would think would make your Ceatacian Observations go bonkers 🙂 Worrysome: they mention stretching the boundaries of Star Trek cannon. Which basically means that that show won't be renewed past existing commitments. But also mention that there is wiggle room for characters in this time frame before characters have to re-integrate existing canon (aka TOS) so this is better news. The first episode is the conclusion of the last season cliff hanger, so Season 3's scripts really begin on episode 2.
It's silly and i love it, remember this is Strange New Worlds - this episode is probably positioned between one about the horror of war/PTSD and one about a planet kidnapping a neighboring planets children as a food source or as free labor.....do people not know how SNW works at this point ?
I had high hopes for SNW, and for the most part I have enjoyed it (even the musical episode), but this blatant disregard of basic canon regarding the Vulcan culture… May I suggest that every script in every ST series, must be approved by a Star Trek Czar, someone like Terry Matalas or Mike McHahan.
Pike twirling the Lirpa is completely ludicrous. How does he know how to use one and why is he bringing it on the mission? It is illogical to have it just to look cool. SNW jumped the shark with the musical episode and now they're going full workplace sitcom. Why can't we have at least one classic/authentic Star Trek show?
The change as well would not mean they could control there emotions because they never had the training to control there emotions that Spock or even Tuvok would of had in Star trek

I sure wish I could watch ST Strange New Worlds.
Alas I'm locked out by location; NL.
Yeah feels a bit tacky and unrealistic (on the other hand you don't have to find an alternative to realistic swearing XD)
Strange New worlds is bringing the fun back. It's cool.🤗
As far as the hair change goes I'm wondering why they didn't get the standard Vulcan bowl cut.
people kept asking "how tall can they keep making that hair???" so they went "challenge accepted"
Maybe it’s all a dream. Maybe Spock’s just having a nightmare.
6:50 yeah that was funny
Can Spock have nightmares? cuz this is a trainwreck nightmare..
He had a nightmare in an earlier episode where his human half and Vulcan half battled each other in an Amok Time like sequence.
No worries. They'll premier it in December when the 1st episode shows a visit from Santa Claus!
*ducks and runs*
Yeah, annoyed that the crew were able to immediately master Vulcan Logic- man, every single Vulcan since Surak's time must've been just losers compared to these four. Wonder how long Spock was taking logic lesson from Uhura after this event...
THIS.
I can't wait for the 4th season of Strange New Worlds, so we can have another Musical episode.
There is talk of some pool o board which I would think would make your Ceatacian Observations go bonkers 🙂
Worrysome: they mention stretching the boundaries of Star Trek cannon.
Everyone who saw Lower Decks knows the end of that sentence.
Discovery: Remain Klingon
SNW: Remain Vulcan
It's silly and i love it, remember this is Strange New Worlds - this episode is probably positioned between one about the horror of war/PTSD and one about a planet kidnapping a neighboring planets children as a food source or as free labor.....do people not know how SNW works at this point ?
I had high hopes for SNW, and for the most part I have enjoyed it (even the musical episode), but this blatant disregard of basic canon regarding the Vulcan culture…
May I suggest that every script in every ST series, must be approved by a Star Trek Czar, someone like Terry Matalas or Mike McHahan.
i wonder when the trailer will come out?
Pike twirling the Lirpa is completely ludicrous. How does he know how to use one and why is he bringing it on the mission? It is illogical to have it just to look cool. SNW jumped the shark with the musical episode and now they're going full workplace sitcom. Why can't we have at least one classic/authentic Star Trek show?
The change as well would not mean they could control there emotions because they never had the training to control there emotions that Spock or even Tuvok would of had in Star trek
I'm pretty sure that this is the full episode.
Spock should have immediately asked why they feel it is logical to verbally antagonize a crew mate.
Is Anson Mount skinnier?
Yea to me it looks like he’s lost a bit of weight
Was that song from rage against the machine
