  • Hoping this is the final installment of the CEL series on the ES300. Quick explanation of what the codes mean, and how to replace the oxygen sensor. Most of the codes I had were very simple repairs that can be done by anyone...so next time your CEL comes on, don't panic, review the codes, and make your plan of attack.

    Thanks Rob. I like your logical steps to fixing your lexus es300. I also have a es300 '99. I decided to fix my lexus myself from now on after spending $350 to change the #2 ignition coil at the Toyota dealer. (which you've shown to be an easy job in your other video). Two weeks after this fix, my car through codes p0125 confirmed, p0153 pending, p0155 pending. p0125 I know is coolant not reaching to temp. for close loop operation for fuel control. I first went with the easy diagnoses and put a resistance test on the coolant temp. sensor without removing it, and got a weird ohm reading that is not to spec. so I replace the ccolant sensor. but the codes still fires after deleting them. The oxygen sensor codes it seems might be affected be coolant temperature. I still suspect is coolant temperature related, but is is weird that both the coolant temp. sensor and the thermostat valve would break at the same time. do you think I should just go ahead and replace the coolant thermostat and see what happens to the oxygen sensor codes? If you have any suggestions I would appreciate it very much.

      I would do the opposite...replace the oxygen sensor and see what happens to P0125. Oxygen sensor eliminated my p0125 code. What does your needle gauge say on engine temp on the dash? Does it get close to the middle? If so, you don't have a coolant issue. What is likely happening is your O2 sensor cant get up to temp because the heater element is broken. The ECU software is mistaking that as the O2 sensor isnt up to temp because the engine is too cold to warm it up.

    Hey Rob, did your mpg go up after this? I have no codes but the car is getting 15-17 mpg when people are getting 22-24. Spark plugs are brand new changed myself with a stubby ratchet. Same with new coil slave wires. And before that ran about every store shelf cleaner through the system one at a time. Receives a steady diet of premium. New air filter. Heard changing this can fix bad readings maybe even saving the car down the road. Nox readings are high on the last emissions check.

      Thanks for the comment...truthfully, I don't track MPG very closely, but I don't recall a drastic difference before and after. If you get yourself an OBD II scanner that includes live stream data, you can see/watch the O2 sensor voltage in a live reading with engine running, plus fuel trims (look for TH-cam videos on how to read fuel trims). Some scanners even have an O2 sensor test mode that sends an electrical signal through OBD II port to ECU and to O2 sensor to confirm if it's electrically good.

    Some help Please! Had codes 1155 and 1135 on a 01 lexus es300. Replaced both sensors front and rear next to firewall and the check engine light will not shut off. Any suggestions? Thanks

    My sister bf only have p0125, the thermostat and ect sensor was changed and the gauge goes close to the halfway mark

    My 99 solara v6 manual has just the p0125 code and nothing else. I’ve replaced the thermostat because it was bad when I bought the car, the coolant temp sensor and the coolant itself. This code will come back after about 10 minutes of driving even when the car has clearly reached operating temperature.

      One of my o2 sensors is stuck at .045-.050v and doesn’t fluctuate like the other ones do. Is this sensor bad ?

      Does the needle gauge on the dash ever get to the middle where it usually ahould be during operation? If yes., it likely is not temp related and likely O2 sensor related.

      Does your O2 sensor have 4 wires? One circuit for the heater element and 1 curcuit for the sensor?

      Xterra Rob I have 4 o2 sensors and they all have 4 wires. The temperature gauge reads in the middle and the coolant temp is staying around 185-190°

      My vote is o2 sensor. I am not sure the specifics of your car...so im not sure which of the 4 is causing it. Likely its one of the two that are closest to the engine since those are typically monitoring for the actual air fuel ratio. Thr two further away from the engine are just checking the catalytic converter function and don't have anything to do with the closed loop fuel control.

    What were the issues the sensor was causing to the Lexus ?

      Just a check engine light. No real driveabiliry issues.

    How did you know to replace bank 2 sensor 1 ?

    • @XterraRob
      @XterraRob  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      J. Torres it depends on which codes you have. My code was specific to that sensor. What check engine light codes do you have?

    • @j.torres5726
      @j.torres5726 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Xterra Rob I have the same 2 codes you do . I just want to know how did you know which o2 sensor to change ?

    • @XterraRob
      @XterraRob  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      J. Torres P1155 is specific to Bank 2 Sensor 1. P1135 is the code specific to Bank 1 Sensor 1. Both represent the same failure mode (heater circuit failed)...but each number tells you individually which sensor it is.

      Thanks for the info.My Fixd is reading P071 & P0125.So which one is bank 1 on the lexus es 300?

    • @XterraRob
      @XterraRob  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Bank 1 is on the back of the engine block. There are 2 oxygen sensors ... Sensor 1 is higher up close to the top of the engine. Sensor 2 is further down stream in exhaust tube.
