  • Description: This 02 Lexus RX 300 with a 3.0l vvt engine, was setting a p1349 code for a variable cam timing problem. This was causing p300 missfire codes for bank 1 (odd) numbered cylinders on the RH side of the engine. The (OCV) or oil control valve was sticking at normal engine temps causing the bank 1 cam to be advanced or retarded at positions other than commanded by the computer. This was verified by a couple of easy tests that are shown. And after replacement of the (OCV), all is well again. If funds permit, it would be an advantage to replace both L/R bank OCV`s at the same time.

    This video led me to the fix of my 2001 RX300. My VSC, TRAC
    Off, and check engine (FLASHING) lites came on simultaneously. Initially the idiot lites served as a red herring
    for me. Having had broken wires leading
    to wheel speed sensors on three previous cars, the VSC lite swayed me into inspecting
    the wheel hubs first. (Also note that I heard a thunk under the Lexus at the
    same moment the idiot lites first came on, so I presumed ice had torn something
    loose.)
    My scanned trouble codes were 0300, 0301, 0303, 0305 and
    1349. My scanner doesnt list the last
    code, so I ignored it initially, which turned out to be a huge mistake. When I finally learned that code 1349 is a
    VVT System Malfunction, I was set on the correct path. I cleaned, inspected and bench tested rear solenoid
    per video. Also cleaned nearby Filter.
    In my case solenoid worked and there was just negligible sludge on valve
    and filter. I think I may have had
    slightly corroded electrical connection at the solenoid which was cured when I
    worked on it. I also discovered that my
    Scan tool wont Erase codes on this particular vehicle, so disconnecting the
    battery for 30+ minutes was necessary.
    If you experience the above conditions, I highly recommend
    following this video!

    Which type of vvt sensor did you use for the replacement?

    You are very good at your analysis. I have a similar problem. At early start the car runs well but at high temperature I get a P1349 code. But I want to know the type (make and part number) of vvt sensor you used in the replacement and if it worked well.

      I just call the dealership with the V I N of the vehicle, and ask for parts dept. Then tell them what part I need. The OEM, is the best part manufacturer for it, in this case. Thanks for watching.

    Ok from the video; its means if I have this code and its mostly occurs at vehicle operating temperature then I need to check the VVT actuator or sensor.
    Because my is ok at cold starts but bad at operating temps which cause code to come on.

    Bank 1 VVT will not come out. I was able to change out Bank 2 VVT and Bank1 and 2 filter screens. Having much trouble with the pulling Bank 1 VVT out the engine. Removed the signal cable and the small bolt. At first, the VVT rotate but with some tpping on the bolt eye and applying as much strength as I could, it finally broke free and can be rotate about 180 degrees, until either the bolt eye or plug hits something. Twisting it back and forth while pulling, the VVT did not come out at all. Used a screw driver under the bolt eye tried to pry it up, tapped on the top of it, tried to put oil between the VVT and engine, used vice grips and tired to pull it out while twisting, nothing worked.
    So any ideas?

    I replaced both of mine recently but still getting the code. I changed one of the ocv filters to see if this would make a difference and it hasnt. Could i have a faulty ocv? Or the electrical connection is not working properly

    Please I have same code on my RX 300 with the light on. But on my way to the tech to get it fixed the light cleared by itself and the car moved normal. My question is that should I go ahead or wait till the check engine light comes on before working on it. My thought is that it's working again

      If it isn't causing a problem, drive it till it does. Will make it easier to diagnose, if it has the problem, occurring. Most of the time.

      How many miles are on it? Not that I am a lexus tranny expert, by no means, but I would pull the dipstick while idling in park, and see if there is any transmission fluid on the dip stick, and if fluid is red (normal), or brown/black (not normal) and an indication of an internal problem.

    How did you heat it up? I tested mine cold and it was working but i did not test it hot.

    • @AutoDrdiy
      @AutoDrdiy  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I heated it with a heat gun, like a super heavy duty hair dryer essencially

    • @joenagy9679
      @joenagy9679 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the info. I borrowed a heat gun and at hotter temps it froze up

    • @AutoDrdiy
      @AutoDrdiy  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, that is what it does, as temp increases to about 160 F, the solenoid becomes non-functional.
      And a trouble code is born.

      Auto Dr diy yep, my RX300 coded out recently so I removed both solenoids and cleaned them out thoroughly after ohming out coils. Reistalled and then flushed out both filters right below them. It's running better now with no codes. Thanks again
