This was not only an opportunity to showcase an underrated element of this game, but I got to showcase how far PS3 emulation has come, since I recorded this at 4K/60fps, which is far beyond the original's performance. It was fun going back and digging up so much archival mocap development footage from various games throughout history. If you didn't know, this video was available for Patrons and TH-cam Members earlier in the week. I'll probably do the same for future videos to give people another incentive. I really appreciate the support and I hope you enjoy the video!
as someone who played this game recently (within the last two years or so) it was a surreal experience. even getting the game to work at a basic level was a bit odd, that my one controller that had the six axis functions for that console had a severely worn control stick that made normal combat almost unplayable, so i had to switch controllers every time there was a 'puzzle' that involved the six axis controller movement. there were some fairly unusual (if not especially difficult) boss fights that were often undercut by semi frequent 'turret' sections that my barely functioning six axis controller made barely possible (sometimes i hit as many targets without the additional layer of controls and then switch back for the last one or two). that and getting somehow lost in fairly small hallways/rooms typified the majority of my experience. it was nice getting an overview of the story that was not experienced anywhere as seamlessly as i played it. thanks for the video
Just wanna say that you can disable the Sixaxis features in the game's options menu. This makes it so the camera/aftertouch/arial combos are set to buttons instead. Hope that helps on a replay!
I've always thought of King Bohan as a super underrated villain, so glad you were able to highlight some of Serkis' nuance. I'm surprised you didn't bring up the movie adaptation's take on Bohan considering they recast him (and yes, I also forgot there was a Heavenly Sword movie until just now).
It's surreal to see now after I finished Enslaved not too long ago and to see in depth video about Heavenly sword, nicely done one Since it can be emulated now in more stable frame rate on rpcs3, I'm considering giving this another go after this to see how the combat hold up
I haven't thought about Heavenly Sword in a very long time, but it strikes me now, her backstory/arc is not too dissimilar from Aloy of Horizon fame. Certainly not 1 for 1, but a few notable comparisons.
Nice timing with Hellblade 2! Game Informer just made a Replay episode today, I mentioned your video in the chat :) Hope some of them will visit your video.
Jeez Louise, I thought you'd never talk about this guy. 10 years later at least. I'd love to see a Devious Intent on Trip from Enslaved like we joked about around that time too. Seriously, she's the worst.
Holy...? You are still there!!! I love ur videos and ur video about Prey 2 was one of the best I've ever seen on The cancelled gem by Human Head Studios (RIP)
I would still love you to do a devious intent on Dr. Cid from Final Fantasy 12. His layers of motivation and his performance is the best part of the game.
Ah! Yes! Now that is an interesting character to explore, even though his role is short, he has some layers of complexity to him! I won’t lie, I love his Boss Fights! His little Dialogue Quotes when preforming his Cutscene Attacks are some of the best moments!
Heavenly Sword was always that intriguing game that caught my eye in the shelves of a game store Hearing about it here really shows off how unique it's story and themes are compared to your typical B game title It's cool how the PS3 / Xbox360 era was _full_ of neat games like this It truly was the last hurrah of the double A game before the inevitable closure of many, many, *many* studios as game development costs started ballooning to unsustainability Thank you for sharing with us just one of no doubt countless hidden gems, obscured and forgotten to a bygone era of gaming
Man its been *years* since ive thought about Heavenly Sword. Its always been kinda left by the wayside in Ninja Theory's work due to their more infamous works like DmC or their more famous works like Hellblade.
Great video as always, Hyper! Have you ever considered doing a video on Emet Selch from Ffxiv shadowbringers? Feel like he'd be a great fit for a video
One aspect that you never brought up was that there was a Heavenly Sword movie. Yes, it’s basically a retread of the PS3 game or Cutscenes only. But there were several Noticeable Changes done to it. With the First being how the Story was Shortened. As well as the Likeness of Andy being changed from King Bohan! Which is really unfortunate. But the MOST INTERESTING ASPECT that was Never Brought up in the Original Game, being that Nariko Has a Half-Brother that she goes to save! And it’s that Half-Brother who her Father Believes to be the true Heavenly Warrior at first! Now that was an Interesting change, one that further questions just how accurate the so-called Prophecy even is! It’s just too bad that we never get to think any further on this this, cause Flying Fox Comes in and Kills the Half-Brother with Ease!
Luke Stephen's review this morning had the occasion for the upload make more sense. A realized action game with Heavenly Sword's direction would actually rival DMC5. Totally forgot Andy Serkias was on PS3 😂
Thank you for noticing. I didn’t believe in custom thumbnail art until recently when I realized you can get something dope and original to represent a video without obnoxious text or self-insert characters. I appreciate Inkuusan for working with me and bringing these ideas/topics to life. I plan on continuing this trend, except for live-action movie related videos.
Love the God of War 1 ending/God of War 2 beginning armor and Blades of Chaos easter egg @ 9:18. If only this game didnt run absolutely horrendously with screen tearing. And if the makers had played Ninja Garden or Devil May Cry and not just God of War 1 when being inspired to make it. Game was way too easy.
@@AncestorEmpire1 MS failed to market games they told them to produce - studios full of full timers working for their families. It's a shame this game never got remastered or ported to any other platforms, keeping it landlocked to the PS3. If Heavenly Sword at least got a PC port I think it would've garnered a larger cult following

I did not wake up today expecting an in-depth video about Heavenly Sword of all things but I'm glad we got it
Man i can believe this guy was in 2 separate mocap powered ps3 era video games
Seeing you talked about heavenly sword is like nostalgia trip for me never thought I'd see this day come to reality
That opening scene stuck itself in my mind for a long time, even though I never even played the game.
I remember you mentioning this character way back when in your DmC Dante video. How time flies.
It's always a lovely surprise coming home from work and seeing a new Devious Intent.
Awesome video, brother! Andy Serkis really elevated the standards of motion capture for game as King Bohan! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I've been thinking "who the hell is king bohan" every since you referenced him in your DmC video. Finally, closure.
Nice timing with Hellblade 2! Game Informer just made a Replay episode today, I mentioned your video in the chat :) Hope some of them will visit your video.

welcome back king!

Was HyperBitHero's favorite class, English? Bro writes the most immaculate dissertations on video games and characters.
Your videos are always so high quality and interesting, I appreciate you man.
A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one
YAY MORE DEVIOUS INTENT!!!
Seeing this game running at a decent frame rate is crazy.
Just bought this game the other day! Hyped to give it a shot
I would still love you to do a devious intent on Dr. Cid from Final Fantasy 12. His layers of motivation and his performance is the best part of the game.

Holy shit my goat is back
Two devious intents in the same year??? 2024 really is the new 2016
Rly love how you change my mind like this
Oh man, I thought I imagined this game, lol
The gods have smiled upon us today boys
great video and just in time for hellblade 2
Man. I remember how MIND NUMBING these graphics were when this game came out.
Babe wake up, Hero dropped another banger!!
I knew you would do this ever since you name dropped him in the Ninja-Theory Virgil video. It was very worth the wait. ~
Heavenly Sword was always that intriguing game that caught my eye in the shelves of a game store

Awesome video. It was informative and entertaining. I want to go play Heavenly Sword now, so job well done!
Man its been *years* since ive thought about Heavenly Sword. Its always been kinda left by the wayside in Ninja Theory's work due to their more infamous works like DmC or their more famous works like Hellblade.
I got a ps3 back in the day pretty much to play this game
Yooo, you finally made a video after all this time. We’re back, boys. And with a cult classic too.
Always a good say when Hero uploads.
the return of the great bohan
I can’t wait to see what Ninja theory does next. DMC: Devil may cry, Bleeding edge, Hellblade 2. Oh…
Great video as always, Hyper! Have you ever considered doing a video on Emet Selch from Ffxiv shadowbringers? Feel like he'd be a great fit for a video
Ninja theory was really ahead of the time with their aggressively ugly and vulgar characters.
I wonder what working there was like?
We eatin good with this vid
Serkis was amazing in Enslaved as well.

Not super related to the video exactly, but I like the new thumbnail art the past two Devious Intents have.
Thank you for noticing. Good luck to ninja theory after they drop hellblade2 under MS after they just canned four other studios they bought…
Surprisingly enough MS apparently greenlit their next game somehow
Those studios released broken games and trash games.
MS ain’t got time for failed promises.

Thankfully, you can run it way better than on PS3 through RPCS3.
king bogan
Bump
Oh shit dad's back from his smoke break and his going full rant about a game almost no one remembers or cares about
Oh look, back when Ninja Theory used to make actual good games
