@@bobo102458 There are many people (see YT channel Edible Acres) who take on older hens as part of a compost building enterprise. Totally worth doing! In my neighborhood we are only allowed 4 hens (no roosters, ugh, I love roosters!), so I cannot do that, but I would be very grateful to find a compost chef who loves older hens. I am not a vegetarian, so I will probably be fine with cooking up the girls (at least I think so?)

Thank you for the video for processing chickens. My maternal grandparents had 7 children on a farm in Nebraska. My mother is the oldest child. Grandma would raise 300 broiler chickens each year. I remember my duties in helping process chickens increased as I became older. We had a very similar set up as you have. We didn't have the 'spinner' that removes the feathers that you have....the little kids helped with that. We would start early in the morning and do about 50 chickens a day until we were done. 1st day we always had fresh fried chicken for lunch. I grew up, went to college and now live 'in the city'. Nothing beats farm grown food. I would love to live on the farm again. Be healthy and safe. M

I saw one self professed homesteader with a perfect garden that lost interest in it and tore it down way early while it was still productive. I much prefer watching you and your family in your garden, mess or not.
My mother "cleaned up for company" 4 times per year. When that dropped to 2 times per year, she decided to return it to 4 times per year 'cause by twice a year it was too much work. Other than that, we always welcomed people who dropped by unannounced but, if we were projecting at all they were expected to project along side with everyone else or have a quick cup of coffee and go home; like wise if they stopped by at meal time, they got to help set the table and eat what we were eating. People who got an informal invite didn't have to chore (unless that was part of the invite) and while things were pretty well picked up, they got to see more of our everyday lives. One time, a young family and kids of my uncle's friends were passing by the general area we lived in when they had vehicle troubles starting to brew. They showed up at the door about the time my uncle called. Of course they were welcomed in but my mother was in the middle of a big kitchen project so, while they used the phone (on the wall in the kitchen of course) they were free to make the bed in the spare room with us kids helping or hang around the kitchen or help in the kitchen. They stayed about a week, stuffed at least some of them selves in the vehicle on errands and to the lake, went u-picking then canned, laundry done including theirs, and even got a couple of quick sight-seeing trips in. Thats simply what happened when you dropped in unannounced.

Jessica. I’m not religious at all, I was brought up a Catholic as a child! it’s too corrupt for my adult mentally. I do believe in kindest & love towards humanity, community life is what we should all aspire for. Personally I don’t like indoctrination by any religious church or religion, kindest & help for our community is the way forward. I have been very fortunate to live with & know people of every religion, the majority are loving, caring they all welcomed me with open hearts shared the little food they had, taught me their traditions so I could respect & understand they also wanted to know about me & my culture so they could respect my life & my beliefs. Condolences for your loss. Don’t worry about your garden. No garden or home is perfect. The perfect in the media is an illusion. They edit out the mess. Besides weeds help keep your soil from drying out until you can tend to it. A lot of my weeds are edibles so i stopped worrying about them too much. I took a page from your book and used pack plays as chick brooders this spring. It worked great! This my first year keeping chicken so I am taking advice from many different folks. Your pack and play advice was timely, frugal, and easy. Many thanks!

By the way there's no reason to be ashamed of the way your house looks or the fact that your garden was slightly neglected for a week or so. That's just part of life. Especially when you've lost a family member. I extend my deepest condolences. Remember that the scripture says to live is Christ and to die is gain! Now under other circumstances if you could have done the work and were simply being lazy and didn't do it out of slothfulness then I could understand somebody feeling ashamed but being embarrassed and being ashamed are two different things. I'm so sorry for the loss of your grandmother. You honor her every day when you keep her traditions alive by passing them on to the next generation, and living as genuinely as she did. By loving yourself and your children as she loved your mother and you in the best ways she could. She lives on in you, your children, and every living thing you care for, right down to the earth between your fingers.
During August and September our kitchen and dinning room are processing rooms and are in constant use. Pots, jars, lids, equipment of various sorts, etc. I feel comforted knowing that it means that food is coming in. I'm never embarrassed. I work and do things. That is what real life looks like. You are correct; community is wonderful... if you can find it. I'm surrounded by extremists and nobody likes to talk to anyone. Very sad situation. I do all the chicken processing by myself. My wife won't even get involved except for vacuum packing the parts. She wasn't raised this way and is still uncomfortable with it. The way we are raised has a lot to do with what we are able to do as adults. You appear to have found a good life-balance. You shouldn't forget that you have a team of kids for weeding and gardening. Many hands make light work. Learning to work is a very important life skill. I admire that you taught your daughter to just jump in and work without being asked. I raised mine similarly. Purslane and lambs quarters are great food sources. However... purslane that has gone to seed is extremely invasive and the seed can live up to 10 years in the soil. Lambs quarters can also overrun a garden. For lambs quarters, I harvest it young and then pull it out when it begins to really bolt. I lay it down in the pathways for mulch. I never throw weeds away. They are pulled out, laid down between rows in layers with the roots exposed to the sun. They provide nutrients for the microbiome. Yes, I grow organically. My chicken manure helps me to accomplish that. I built a plucker, but I really should have purchased a better one. Being a one man band, I need technology sometimes to get things done. Interesting about using the feet for chicken stock. I'll give that a go. Some crops really belong in the ground and in rows when feeding a large family. The two I can think of are corn and green beans. Potatoes are up there too, but some people use containers for potatoes with good results. I plant 500 potato plants, so containers are not an option for me. BTW, my gardens in September look mostly like weeds, but the produce is mature enough to be resilient until I get things harvested. The weeds are eventually mowed and tilled-in, creating green manure for my cereal rye grain cover crop. Oh... I always see the flowers... everywhere.🙂 All the best for your family.
Im sorry to hear about your grandmother. I lost my grandma at 97 years old this May. My husband and I always say " good enough for who its for" meaning whatever it is, its for us and we really don't care what anyone else thinks.

What I see is a huge amount of effort and hard work! Our garden in Eastern Washington is hardly growing at all. A very late summer has left us with little hope for much of a harvest. Never under state the beauty of your efforts! No excuses needed♡♡♡
I loved seeing your garden and your chicken processing. This was our second year processing our own chickens, and we are so grateful that friends came to teach and help us. Our set up is very similar. One thing we add that is very helpful is a place to keep the hose so you don’t have to keep bending over to get it off the ground. We hook ours on a shepherd’s hook to hold it up in easy reach.

I am so grateful for your words about a messy life. I got a cold the evolved into a sinus infection and I went for a walk last night and saw the weeds and pests devouring my plants. It needed to be watered so badly. And I decided to just turn a blind eye to it all and focused instead on the blessings happening all around me. Then in the middle of the night it rained, it poured and watered my garden and now that I have a script for an antibiotic and I will be better in no time.
Weeds are only plants in the wrong place. I am amazed at how much you do every day. Not many women could fill your shoes. You have your priorities straight!

First off I am sorry for the loss of your Grandmother. I have a special place in my heart for my foster grandma, she always treated us so special. I don't have children but work full time outside the home and my house is far from being perfect! I do long to live your mind of lifestyle, unfortunately I'm on my , (not by choice) and live in a small home that I was hardly any garden my property is roughly 15ft x 15ft that includes my bathroom, kitchen, living room, and a recess for my bedroom it's a recess bungalow and I desperately need a lot more space as I would love to start growing vegetables and have chickens for eggs maybe? Vegetables definitely though. Your sensitivity in the subject was visually appreciated as we hardly saw anything. So nice to hear someone talk about a messy house with children and a weedy garden. Boy can I relate to this. I have a saying we use, "trying to clean a house with children in the house is like trying to shovel snow during a snow storm. My house isn't always neat and tidy either, it's definitely "lived in" Glad your are a down to earth person. We have a few more weeks on our meat chickens yet. Loved the traffic cone idea.A Also a note about the weeds, if you can take time to identify what weeds are growing in your soil, you can tell what your soil is rich in or lacking.
I grew up in a home that was lived in. That is how my home is. When I see another persons home that has that lived in look, I am happy for them knowing it is truly a home. Life is happening all around you and you are smart enough to experience it rather than fight it. :)

Someone told me that raising your own animals means they only have to have ONE bad day in its life! The meat we buy at the grocery store comes from animals that did not get to run around and find flowers and tasty bugs. The meat we raised was SO much more flavorful than store bought. I hope you share how you use your innards-heart, liver, gizzards.

So sad that your grandmother went home to be with the Lord but what glory for her. How do you eat purslane? I learned a new way to defeat squash bugs is to wrap the squash vine from the ground out about 6-8 inches with aluminum foil. Not tight but loosely and squeeze foil in so it can expand as the vine grows thicker. I wish I could do a chicken processing but at 68 with physical limitations it wouldn't work.

Loved your chicken processing organization. It is hard but rewarding work. I thought of my mother who in the 50’s processed 25 hens in one day by herself. She managed to do it without the pluckers or outside water heaters. I’ve done a few myself but never that many or with such a great assembly line. Congratulations.
Its nice to see real life gardening. Sometimes (most times) life gets complicated and you can only do so much! We have butchered chickens three times. We will be getting our fourth set in another month. My husband was able to build our chicken plucker so that saved a lot! They are so nice!

Meanwhile, I got COVID and have not been able to do anything. I’m right there with you, a clean house, garden, etc. is not what’s important in the end. I think I should be embarrassed about my front yard (I was in the middle of projects and haven’t weeded) but God knows my heart, so I don’t care what anyone thinks. They showed up at the door about the time my uncle called. Of course they were welcomed in but my mother was in the middle of a big kitchen project so, while they used the phone (on the wall in the kitchen of course) they were free to make the bed in the spare room with us kids helping or hang around the kitchen or help in the kitchen. They stayed about a week, stuffed at least some of them selves in the vehicle on errands and to the lake, went u-picking then canned, laundry done including theirs, and even got a couple of quick sight-seeing trips in. Thats simply what happened when you dropped in unannounced.

Jessica. I’m not religious at all, I was brought up a Catholic as a child! it’s too corrupt for my adult mentally. I do believe in kindest & love towards humanity, community life is what we should all aspire for. Personally I don’t like indoctrination by any religious church or religion, kindest & help for our community is the way forward. I have been very fortunate to live with & know people of every religion, the majority are loving, caring they all welcomed me with open hearts shared the little food they had, taught me their traditions so I could respect & understand they also wanted to know about me & my culture so they could respect my life & my beliefs. Don’t worry about your garden. No garden or home is perfect. The perfect in the media is an illusion. They edit out the mess. Besides weeds help keep your soil from drying out until you can tend to it. A lot of my weeds are edibles so i stopped worrying about them too much.

By the way there's no reason to be ashamed of the way your house looks or the fact that your garden was slightly neglected for a week or so. That's just part of life. Especially when you've lost a family member. I extend my deepest condolences. Remember that the scripture says to live is Christ and to die is gain! Now under other circumstances if you could have done the work and were simply being lazy and didn't do it out of slothfulness then I could understand somebody feeling ashamed but being embarrassed and being ashamed are two different things. I'm so sorry for the loss of your grandmother. You honor her every day when you keep her traditions alive by passing them on to the next generation, and living as genuinely as she did. By loving yourself and your children as she loved your mother and you in the best ways she could. She lives on in you, your children, and every living thing you care for, right down to the earth between your fingers.
During August and September our kitchen and dinning room are processing rooms and are in constant use. Pots, jars, lids, equipment of various sorts, etc. I feel comforted knowing that it means that food is coming in. I'm never embarrassed. I work and do things. That is what real life looks like.
You are correct; community is wonderful... if you can find it. I'm surrounded by extremists and nobody likes to talk to anyone. Very sad situation.
I do all the chicken processing by myself. My wife won't even get involved except for vacuum packing the parts. She wasn't raised this way and is still uncomfortable with it.
The way we are raised has a lot to do with what we are able to do as adults. You appear to have found a good life-balance. You shouldn't forget that you have a team of kids for weeding and gardening. Many hands make light work. Learning to work is a very important life skill. I admire that you taught your daughter to just jump in and work without being asked. I raised mine similarly.
Purslane and lambs quarters are great food sources. However... purslane that has gone to seed is extremely invasive and the seed can live up to 10 years in the soil. Lambs quarters can also overrun a garden. For lambs quarters, I harvest it young and then pull it out when it begins to really bolt. I lay it down in the pathways for mulch. I never throw weeds away. They are pulled out, laid down between rows in layers with the roots exposed to the sun. They provide nutrients for the microbiome. Yes, I grow organically. My chicken manure helps me to accomplish that.
I built a plucker, but I really should have purchased a better one. Being a one man band, I need technology sometimes to get things done.
Interesting about using the feet for chicken stock. I'll give that a go.
Some crops really belong in the ground and in rows when feeding a large family. The two I can think of are corn and green beans. Potatoes are up there too, but some people use containers for potatoes with good results. I plant 500 potato plants, so containers are not an option for me.
BTW, my gardens in September look mostly like weeds, but the produce is mature enough to be resilient until I get things harvested. The weeds are eventually mowed and tilled-in, creating green manure for my cereal rye grain cover crop.
Oh... I always see the flowers... everywhere.🙂

I think this is priority. It is more important to hug and love on the children than to have a perfect house or garden.
What I see is a huge amount of effort and hard work! Our garden in Eastern Washington is hardly growing at all. A very late summer has left us with little hope for much of a harvest.

I loved seeing your garden and your chicken processing. This was our second year processing our own chickens, and we are so grateful that friends came to teach and help us. Our set up is very similar. One thing we add that is very helpful is a place to keep the hose so you don’t have to keep bending over to get it off the ground. We hook ours on a shepherd’s hook to hold it up in easy reach.

So sorry for the loss of your grandmother. We had a loss this past week. It is hard to keep going while you mourn. My house kinda fell apart for a few days also. If people can understand real life they are not really enjoying their life. What a sad life that would be.

I am so grateful for your words about a messy life. I got a cold the evolved into a sinus infection and I went for a walk last night and saw the weeds and pests devouring my plants. It needed to be watered so badly. And I decided to just turn a blind eye to it all and focused instead on the blessings happening all around me. Then in the middle of the night it rained, it poured and watered my garden and now that I have a script for an antibiotic and I will be better in no time.
Weeds are only plants in the wrong place. I am amazed at how much you do every day. Not many women could fill your shoes. You have your priorities straight!

First off I am sorry for the loss of your Grandmother. I have a special place in my heart for my foster grandma, she always treated us so special. I don't have children but work full time outside the home and my house is far from being perfect! I do long to live your mind of lifestyle, unfortunately I'm on my , (not by choice) and live in a small home that I was hardly any garden my property is roughly 15ft x 15ft that includes my bathroom, kitchen, living room, and a recess for my bedroom it's a recess bungalow and I desperately need a lot more space as I would love to start growing vegetables and have chickens for eggs maybe? Vegetables definitely though.

So nice to hear someone talk about a messy house with children and a weedy garden. Boy can I relate to this. I have a saying we use, "trying to clean a house with children in the house is like trying to shovel snow during a snow storm. My house isn't always neat and tidy either, it's definitely "lived in" Glad your are a down to earth person. We have a few more weeks on our meat chickens yet. Loved the traffic cone idea.A Also a note about the weeds, if you can take time to identify what weeds are growing in your soil, you can tell what your soil is rich in or lacking.
I grew up in a home that was lived in. That is how my home is. When I see another persons home that has that lived in look, I am happy for them knowing it is truly a home. Life is happening all around you and you are smart enough to experience it rather than fight it. :)

Thanks for sharing your process for chicken processing. Someone told me that raising your own animals means they only have to have ONE bad day in its life! The meat we buy at the grocery store comes from animals that did not get to run around and find flowers and tasty bugs. The meat we raised was SO much more flavorful than store bought.

So sad that your grandmother went home to be with the Lord but what glory for her. How do you eat purslane? I learned a new way to defeat squash bugs is to wrap the squash vine from the ground out about 6-8 inches with aluminum foil. Not tight but loosely and squeeze foil in so it can expand as the vine grows thicker. I wish I could do a chicken processing but at 68 with physical limitations it wouldn't work.

Loved your chicken processing organization. It is hard but rewarding work. I thought of my mother who in the 50’s processed 25 hens in one day by herself. She managed to do it without the pluckers or outside water heaters. I’ve done a few myself but never that many or with such a great assembly line. Congratulations.

Its nice to see real life gardening. Sometimes (most times) life gets complicated and you can only do so much! We have butchered chickens three times. We will be getting our fourth set in another month. My husband was able to build our chicken plucker so that saved a lot! They are so nice!

Meanwhile, I got COVID and have not been able to do anything. I’m right there with you, a clean house, garden, etc. is not what’s important in the end. I think I should be embarrassed about my front yard (I was in the middle of projects and haven’t weeded) but God knows my heart, so I don’t care what anyone thinks.
