      I definitely said this last year too during moving and having a baby and I have to say moving is much more time consuming especially if you are renovating haha… babies can garden with you to an extent as long you have a back pack carrier and it’s not too hot. 😀

    Every summer while I was in college I worked at a greenhouse/garden center and when we'd plant flower containers we always followed the same pattern and I bet it would work for vegetables, too. So, in your pots and grow bags, plant something that grows slim and tall in the center and then go around, rotating every other position, planting something bushy and then, something trailing. This will ensure plants aren't fighting for sunlight and everyone gets along. :)

    Becky, I know this probably isn't the year to do this with everything you have on your plate right now, but you can over winter your peppers by digging them up, cutting them all the way back, and potting them. It gives you a head start for the next year when you stick them back into the ground. It might be something to try in the future, since you love peppers so much. Your garden is lovely! 😊

    It's not the 'tomatoes' and 'peppers', it's the 'peppers' and 'green bean' combo. Green beans prefer neutral soil while peppers prefer slightly acidic soil. Peppers and tomatoes are in the same family so they have similar growth requirements. While Tomatoes & Green beans share some of the same needs, they don't necessarily make good companions; however, you can grow them together (as you've found out).

    In the new house are you going to separate your produce and flower beds? I think you should transplant at least one of your blueberry plants as well as the herbs and medicinal plants you have in your garden. If you do get a greenhouse or even a growing tunnel you may find growing the ginger/turmeric easier in respect of starting the growing process. But this is someone from England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 saying this! Good luck with the house move. Remember to rest when needed 🇬🇧🙂

    You definitely need to transplant your flowers! Most, if not all, of your flowers are perennials. There is a lot of money and love in your garden so make sure to take as much as you can. My parents moved to China (for my Dad’s work) for 4 years and before they sold their home they transplanted at least a few of every variety of my Mom’s perennials to our home for a temporary home until they moved back. Now, not only do I have a beautiful floral garden, but my Mom has all her original plantings. Do you have family or friends to come help with your garden this year? You have so much on your plate, plus growing a tiny human. If I were closer, I would volunteer to come weed and help you harvest just for the fun of it. Love the garden tour!

    You can harvest & use all of the echinacea plant. I harvest all the flowers throughout the season & lay them out to dry naturally. When the flowering starts to slow down, I cut it back down & harvest all the leaves, dry them naturally & put those up. As for the roots, you’re right, the roots are great medicinally. But the cool thing about echinacea is that you can split echinacea roots to grow more plants, but you need to wait until spring. If you do it in the fall, the split plant may not establish before the cold weather sets in. So I wait until spring to dig up the plants, split them into 4 plants. I replant 3 and keep 1 from each plant to use medicinally. That way you don’t take all the roots & have to start over.

We use it in our community garden next to a nature preserve with lots of rabbits and deer. Beans do not need pollinators to produce beans, so no worries about not getting beans.

    Hi Becky, your echinacea plants will transplant just fine if you do the following… don’t cut them back after the flowers have started to die off. Dig up the whole plant with flower stems that are dying off and leaves attached. Plant the whole thing in its new home and water well. Then leave them like that all Fall and Winter. Only cut them back to about 4” from the ground at the beginning of April next year.
    I’ve grown echinacea for years and moved home several times. Always brought my echinacea with me and they do just fine 😀

    The celery with seed heads dries real well to be powdered. It is not meant to eat fresh at that point. 1/8t per 1/2c sea salt makes the best celery salt. Baker Creek has a Chinese celery that handles the heat real well (I keep getting the red and the white mixed up). Also, we don’t have a freeze dryer but do have three dehydrators. We like to slice, blanch and then dehydrate the potatoes to use for scalloped potatoes and throw into soup. And yes, that rudbeckia IS stunning!

      @dlsdyer9071 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cynthiafisher9907 boiling the potato slices (blanching) for five minutes and then putting them in an ice bath keeps them from turning. I shorted it the time once and ended up with indigo swirled potato slices, lol. For scalloped potatoes layer the dried potatoes to not quite halfway up a Pyrex dish. Add ranch seasoning if you elect to not use cheese in the dish. Add salt to taste then add milk to just under 1/2 inch from the top. Bake at 325F (Convection) or 340F regular. Check doneness periodically and add more milk when necessary. After it comes out of the oven and cools a little bit a paprika sprinkle or garnished with parsley is nice.

    If you plant your corn in your bean or squash beds, it will fair much better than standing alone.
    The Native Americans had the 'three sisters'; corn, beans and squash that they planted all together.
    The beans set the nitrogen the corn needs, the corn gives the climbing beans structure and the squash helps fertilize the other two.
    And that are charts that show which veggies go best together and which cannot stand each other.
    Marigolds and tomato work very good companions.

She could put a hay mat down underneath with the fencing over the top held down with landscape pins. It would be easy to plant the squash in the upper squares. Something I found out purely by accident... the first year I had a garden I killed myself weeding in the 90 & 100 plus degree heat to keep it looking nice thinking the weeds would kill my vegetable plants. Not so. Last year after planting my garden a family member became ill & I spent months caring for them & their household, as well as mine, working FT, their Dr. apts, errands, etc. I thought my garden was dead because it was so overgrown with weeds & neglected. I did keep it watered due to 8 weeks of severe drought. But, It was the BEST garden I’ve ever had. I’m convinced that the weeds helped maintain the moisture in the soil & kept the plants shaded enough to keep our scorching summer sun from frying all of it. It was glorious having such a bounty from such neglect. Don’t feel guilty about the weeds. In some cases it’s better for the plants.
