  • In this video I have a look at a GMC Sierra that came into the shop with a complaint of no horn. However, that was it, all other steering wheel functions worked and no air bag light on. Didn't take long to run down the real issue. -Enjoy!

4 commercials in a 12 minute video = no bueno. In an Eric O video = totally worth it! Somebody screwed around with one of those airbag wires - the sheathing is scraped off quite a bit. I would have had a close look at that and taped it up before popping the horn button back in. How many thousand others said, “Ivan no parts required repair!”? 👍👏🔧

The day after watching this video, I didn't pass my State Safety check inspection due to my horn not working. I did just like Eric O and tried my panic button on my remote and the horns worked fine. Then I noticed that some of my steering wheel controls didn't work. Turned out to be a bad clock spring for my car. Expensive part but at least I saved on the labor by doing it myself. Thanks Eric.

This video reminds me of my Dad's 1985 S10 Blazer. Back in the 90s, the spring metal that comprised the switch in the steering wheel had a finger that broke off. It tumbled around when he turned the wheel, often resulting in a string of "angry driver" honks on occasion. This always seemed to happen at the most inopportune times. The best one was at around midnight, on a nice summer night, while going around a slight bend on a city street. You could see the lights go on in the houses as he woke up nearly everyone on the block who had their bedroom windows open.
It was at the repair shop the next day after that.

News channels are not that savvy. I recall one sending some appliance like a clock-radio around for service; they hired an engineer to set something up so he blew a fuse and put that in. The news channel was incensed that two of the shops they took it to wanted to replace the power transformer the fuse fed. Their engineer didn't know what the good techs know: if a fuse is blown, something blew it. Replacing a fuse will get you a call-back.

I have an 02 Pontiac Grand Prix and had to replace this set of contacts thingy that is apart of the ignition switch. Under the dash near the column work. I've had the car long enough to have to do it again. Second time I just pulled the drivers seat out. Then I could relax and put my feet up on the rear seat.

Dam spade connection, remind me of a fault I had on my own Datsun Sunny (UK) 1980's .every 3 or for 4 months when I go round a right hand turn the engine would stall. It would restart immediately with the key and then be fine for another 3 or 4 months. I found the fault by accidentally when touching the wiring harness I noticed the spade connector on the low voltage side of the coil was just slipped on between the boot and spades when when you turned the corner it must of broke connection just enough to kill the ignition but not every time. it took about 4 years to find that one by accident I lent on the harness while doing some thing else and just notice the move of the spade.

"It's elementary, my dear Watson! The horn works when the fob is activated, but not when the horn contacts in said steering wheel are depressed. Thus, the problem, and the solution, laid elsewhere. A careful examination of the physical evidence revealed the cause of the malfunction was inside the steering wheel airbag compartment, viz, a disconnected wire which prevented the horn contacts from sounding the horn. Once again science and good detective work solve the case. Now, bring me some tea if you please."

In Hoovie's Garage (IIRC) the Wizard warned that the key fob should be kept on the ground when putting a Toyota hybrid on a lift. Apparently he had left one inside the car when he started an oil change on a Prius, and the system was still "ready." The engine started with the oil drained and the car in the air.
