Doom 3, the PS1 versions of Doom and Final Doom along with Doom64, are my favorite games/versions in the franchise. I definitely love how they lean more towards horror and atmosphere.

To be honest, Doom 64 has my favourite art style in the series. I like the more horror feel they went with (though I would have liked the metal music to stay) and the more detailed enemy design with the clunky movement gives it a stop motion feel to me.

The enemies definitely have a cool claymation feel to them.

3:29 Aside from colored lighting, The technical limitations of D64 are almost the same as original Doom - the texture size is the same, and the sprite resolution (on the enemies) is only marginally higher, while for the weapons it stays the same. Even the "multifloor" trick is actually recreateable on the vanilla Doom, and in both cases it works via rapid silent elevators.
Main graphical difference is in the aesthetics, and the technology behind making those textures and sprites - enemies are rendered from 3D models (4:22 that's called Pre-rendered 3D by the way, like Donkey Kong) instead of rotoscoped clay figures (or done by hand), and graphical editing tools used to create textures are much more versatile. Many of the original Doom textures were made by digitizing photos (one of the flesh textures is made from graphical designer's own scraped knee), while 64's texture are all digitally painted from scratch.

Erm yeah the story does work, and being a massive fan of the franchise I can see it for what it is, a fun way to connect the games together. It's fun and not to be taken seriously. It's hilarious how certain people are old men being super serious about the whole thing

@@DWTerminator If it ever happens, you should review the sister game, Perfect Dark. Just as a side note regarding Perfect Dark. It has a 360 remaster. So you might wanna use that copy since it's officially the latest incarnation, like Turok 1 and 2's remasters were.

Personally I find doom 64 to be really scary and creepy, specially at 3am with those soundtracks from the later maps. I was sure the freaking devil was going to touch my shoulder from behind at any moment lmao

I got into Doom on PC, but the Aubrey Hodges version of the Doom theme (PS1/N64) is for me the definitive Doom theme. It's dark, heavy, haunting, with a slight undertone of a heroic crusade to fight off the hordes of evil, only for that small hope to instead plummet to the depths of darkness; for you are ultimately DOOMED. Nothing encapsulates the feel and the name of the series better than this theme...and his 20th Anniversary Remasters are even better than the originals.
The game itself of course kicks ass. A real precursor in many ways to the excellent Doom 3, and visually it's somewhere in between Doom and Quake 1. Great levels and action. Overall, it's not my favorite in the series, but that's only because I love all the others so much. It's nothing against Doom 64 which is still excellent in its own right.

Curious as to what games you consider scary? You mentioned a sense of dread and not experiencing that in gaming.
However, I think games like System Shock 2 really nailed it without needing shock scares (no pun intended)

well, it seems the Steam release has already been changed to the "upgraded" version of Doom 64. I wishlisted it anyways just because I'd like to at least try all the "classic" Dooms that I can.
Speaking of horror movies, I saw Smile today, it's not what I'd call a great movie, but it works.

When I played this game as wee lad, about 10 years old, the mood of this game got me, it was pretty creepy and because I was an idiot 10 year old, I got lost constantly and the ambiance and backtracking and occasional monster spawns kept me on edge and scared me. I dropped the game... because it was a doom game, and a fucking incomprehensible maze/puzzles.
I picked the game back up right before it rereleased with the brutal mod and you know what? Its pretty good. The ambiance holds up, the droning music doesn't add much tension on its own but it certainly fits in with this overrun facility on mars where I'm the last survivor of an assault trying to clear it out. It add this not horror but I guess tactical tension, the sprite work is goo,d the brutal mod's addition of blood and gore really help sell the aforementioned overrun facility, and the gameplay held up.
Thatnk god I could play with mouse and keyboard with a save anywhere. I did NOT like that for the n64 version.

This games sound design and "atmosphere", are the sole reason I dislike it. One and Two's badass metal soundtracks gave those games way more charm, then this one could ever hope to have. This was my first exposure to Doom to, so its not nostalgia talking. I played 1&2 for the first time fairly recently.

I wish we would have stayed one or rather two years longer in the Sprite graphics department. The fully 3D enviroment is all fine and dandy for shooters. But not for the Figures/NPCs etc. It was simply too early to transition to the early fugly 3D bandwagon.
Many companies went bankkrupt because of this crappy trend. And who knows how much genres we lost, weren't invented. Games not made etc.
Also, looking at 2D RPGs like Chrono Trigger or Terranigma, Treasure of the Rudras, Suikoden 1&2. All those 2D games look better by a landslide than the early 3D trash that is Final Fantasy 7/8, Chono Cross etc.
I was there back then, when FF7 was released. And it was already a fcking ugly game back then. Staring at the screen, trying to identify what the background is suppose to portray. Not to mention the blocky NPCs. Pretty awful to look at, back then already.

I don't care about the story and one of the reasons why i don't like the new 2016 and eternal with the pointless cutscenes all the time and you can't skip them it slows the flow down when playing why the classic doom games was just better fun without all the crap that comes with the new one dooms games doing special moves and pole swing and wall climbing along with double dashing along with the parkour style arena type gameplay it lost all what doom was from the classic from a puzzle maze and art style. Just a shame the visuals are so old now and ID won't do the remaster from the ground up and then build upon it with brand new maps and bring back that classic style doom again

Check out Alien: Isolation if you want to feel completely helpless throughout most of the game. I can’t play that game it creeps me out too much but then again horror isn’t really my thing. I still love what the devs did with the game, they completely nailed the tone and dread of the original Alien movie.

    • @DWTerminator
      @DWTerminator  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

As I said, my enjoyment of a horror game hinges heavily on its atmosphere. Constantly running and hiding from monsters (or in this case, a xenomorph) is not my idea of fun.

You hit the nail on the head saying the new doom games story is like bad fan fiction, I watched a little bit of that new halo series and thought, wow they really did turn the doom marine into an edgier version of master chief, except let’s re name him something stupid like doom slayer. Seriously though: wears power armour? Check, altered super soldier? Check, has a lot of lore and is treated and worshipped as a godlike legendary warrior? Check. Has a fan base that won’t shut up about how powerful and tough he is, and that he could beat any other character in a fight…*sigh* check.
Also Doom 64 is a game where I would say it does get better later on, those first few tech base levels are kind of dull I think and they’re all kind of the same, and it gets much better when you get to hell which is most of the game, or at least I think so.
