  • Sting plays his song "Russians" live in concert with the San Francisco Symphony before a sold-out crowd at Davies Symphony Hall on February 15, 2024. Russians appeared on Sting's debut solo album, The Dream Of The Blue Turtles (1985). Its melody is based on “Lieutenant Kije Suite” by Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev. This chamber version was arranged by American composer Rob Mathes, who also served as the concert's musical director and played piano and keyboards. Sting is a Grammy Award winning British singer-songwriter from Newcastle, England who was a founding member of the band The Police. This was one of only a handful of shows Sting is playing with symphony orchestras, including an upcoming show with the Philadelphia Orchestra on March 8 and 9.
    ==================
    Russians lyrics:
    In Europe and America
There’s a growing feeling of hysteria
Conditioned to respond to all the threats
In the rhetorical speeches of the Soviets
Mr. Khrushchev said we will bury you
I don’t subscribe to this point of view
It would be such an ignorant thing to do
If the Russians love their children too
How can I save my little boy
    From Oppenheimer's deadly toy?
There is no monopoly of common sense
On either side of the political fence
    We share the same biology
    Regardless of ideology
Believe me when I say to you
I hope the Russians love their children too
    There is no historical precedent
To put the words in the mouth of the president
There’s no such thing as a winnable war
    It’s a lie we don’t believe anymore
Mr. Reagan says we will protect you
I don’t subscribe to this point of view
Believe me when I say to you
I hope the Russians love their children too
    We share the same biology
    Regardless of ideology
What might save us me and you
Is that the Russians love their children too
Written by Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner a/k/a Sting

It was a time when the Cold War between the United States and Russia was clearly felt in the everyday life of Japan. It was around that time that Sting created the Russians. It was in 1985. The Cold War had been going on for a long time before that, but he probably wrote the song as a culmination of it all.

Sane and reasonable people don't make that mistake, and they matter the most.
I don't judge Russians, the Russian folk based upon their recent government or their history,
I form my opinion by meeting Russian people in person, I try to understand the Russian spirit by talking to the ordinary every day people, or reading Tolstoy, Dostoyevsky, Solzhenitsyn, Puskin, Bulgakov, and all the classics, Russian literature is beyond brilliant, listening to Russian composers opens a door in your soul.
You just can't despise a whole nation who contributed so much to the world's heritage, just because the narrative says they are are for to blame.
Find the wood beam in your own eyes before you judge another for a toothpick.
      God is great.
Just to answer the poetic question of the song:
Russians looove their children, they are far more traditional then Westerners bytheway

Such a great song … ruined a little by his comment about Putin not loving his children.
How much experience does Sting have in international relations ? Does he know how hard Russians have had to work to tolerate British prejudice ?
Why is it ok for Kennedy to draw the line at Soviet missiles on his doorstep but when Putin refuses to allow American missiles on his doorstep it’s something to do with not loving his children 🙈
Oh Sting .. my ex-hero-turned-Anglo-Saxon-bigot … why not just let your music speak to all of humanity ? (Given that Anglo-Saxons with their Russophobia’s are only 7% of the world’s population …)

      @cl2008cl2008 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

The FSB needs to hire better shills, because your propagandist comment is a real jumbled mess. As Sting explains, the point of this song was for him to describe that moment where he rejected the propaganda he was being fed about how evil the Soviets were. So that's the opposite of what you're saying here.
As for Sting's comments about Putin sending Russian kids through a meat grinder, this is objectively true. That's his military strategy. He is trying to overwhelm Ukraine's defenses by thrusting as many poorly trained kids as he can at the Ukrainian defenders. We know this is true from the accounts of these young soldiers firsthand after they are captured, through intercepted cell phone calls they make back home, from complaints from the Russian families of these kids after they are gone, and from accounts by Russian military bloggers.
Finally, your comparison of the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962 to Putin's invasion of Ukraine in 2022 is utterly bizarre and inapt. Ukraine was not hosting missiles. There was no justification for the mass murder, rape, and kidnapping of many thousands of Ukrainian men, women, and children. And by the way, if Putin really was nervous about NATO getting too close for comfort, his invasion totally backfired, because it led to Sweden and Finland joining the group. So that makes him a fool as well as a mass murderer.
