      As for missing it, the guy who bought it from me enjoys it way more than I would have, so it's all good. For me it was a bit too nice of a car. I really enjoy a scary fast shitbox like my 328 with an LS/TH400, and turbos in the trunk. Lol

    What Exhaust Setup? Amazing!!!

    • @tptrsn
      @tptrsn  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! A large part of the exhaust sound you hear as the car is approaching, or near the camera, is the wastegate sound. It is open to the atmosphere, and blasts straight down at the ground from the area of the front of the engine.
      As the car fades into the distance, you can hear the exhaust note that is going through the actual exhaust system out of the turbo. That consists of a 3" downpipe that runs down behind the engine to the bottom of the firewall, and from there back is 4" aluminum tubing, with an aluminum resonator under the mid-area of the car where the cats used to be, and then a 4" straight through oval bodied Hooker muffler at the back of the car.

    How much horsepower are you making? and what year is this car and did you need some special bracket to mount it or did you just mount it to the engine just fine?

    • @tptrsn
      @tptrsn  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The car was making about 600 at the crank in this configuration, turbo mounted to the right side strut tower. There is another video on my channel here where you can see the setup in detail. This car is a '97.

    • @tptrsn
      @tptrsn  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Tetova Tetovo Thanks!! It is a VERY complex thing to do a turbo install on an E39 540, which is kind of the reason I did it.
      I'm not familiar with Rotrex, but if that's a centrifugal supercharger kit, then that would probably be much less of an endurance test to install and begin enjoying. Just a thought.

      My car is the only one like it that I know of. There are a couple of people with turbo E34s in the USA, and probably lots more in Europe, but I don't know of any of them that still have A/C. It was a major pain to make this work while keeping A/C.

Thanks in advance!

    • @tptrsn
      @tptrsn  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't had it on a dyno. Maybe later in the year if it isn't sold. M52s absolutely LOVE turbos, so you really need to do that. It changes the character of them in a fantastic way, and makes them sound excellent.

    Do you still have stock axles in that thing? I drift my 540 and the first axle that went was my driver side, replaced that and now my passenger side went 😂😂😂 so I've heard that 530's have thicker axles or whatever so just wondering what you're using because you have 500+ whp when im here completely stock 😂😂😂

    • @tptrsn
      @tptrsn  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In this form, the car had an OEM (very important distinction I've found on my other car) 540i manual transmission axle on one side, and an OEM E39 M5 axle on the other side. The side-to-side difference in axles is supposed to minimize axle hop, and maybe really does help with that...? But anyway, I have not had any problems with axles on this car.
      On my '97 328i though, I have snapped a few aftermarket axles. Since I went to OEM 328i manual transmission axles, they have held up to drifting and some drag racing (10.6@143), so they are doing very well.

      @@sots_goober No problem!! I did take the turbo 540 out drifting too, and the axles were fine, but if you are using a welded 540 diff instead of the M5 diff I was using, it would stress the axles somewhat differently.

      @sots_goober 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's actually a good point guess that would be the next move i ordered some oem axles just now they come in on friday so it'll be party time again and sweet bro you should really make more videos or at least a longer videoof the 540 that car and the set up looks too good but theres not much footage of it out there, same reason why I chose to use this platform as a driftcar just cause not many people do it, atleast not in the U.S

    • @tptrsn
      @tptrsn  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cruzinezy1968 Thanks! (I think..., Lol) That sound at 0:04 is mainly the sound of the angry exhaust coming out of the wastegate when the wastegate is beginning to open. Wastegate sound doesn't go through the turbocharger turbine, so it has a different sound to it. In this case, it was not recirculated back into the exhaust, so it was unmuffled, and just blasting down at the surface of the road. Definitely makes for a unique sound, Lol..

      Completely factory stock internals. I've run up to about 19.4psi, but I don't remember for sure if I had the boost set there in this video or not. It was probably somewhere between 17 and 19.4.

    • @tptrsn
      @tptrsn  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@E39M62B44 At this point I am pretty convinced that the M62 itself is an inherently strong engine that can handle a lot of boost if you avoid detonation. I believe this combo still has a lot of headroom, but the cams are a pretty big limiting factor.
      So anyway, this is on E85, which is a big point for making it easy to keep the engine together. The other big thing is that it's not running the DME anymore. That damn thing would randomly add timing and pull fuel IN BOOST. Really helped me to understand why people blow up boosted M62s. I spent about 6 months trying to get the DME to behave, but I wasn't able to make it happen.
      Let's see that twin HX35 setup!!! (EDIT) Found it, SUPER NICE BUILD!!

      @@tptrsn I run regular fuel + W/M. E85 has poor availability in my country. I was on MegaSquirt before I went turbo. No one I know stays on stock ECU for turbo build. I had my cams done last summer. Just mild grind+1 mm lift. Had good effect around rpm range +10% fuel (=power) even when not on boost

    • @tptrsn
      @tptrsn  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@E39M62B44 I've been commenting on your build video, but I will also say here that I think regular fuel + W/M is a fantastic solution. But since we have E85 widely available in my part of the USA, it is cheaper and easier to use. I think the overall effect is very similar though. Before E85 was widely available, I always used gasoline (premium grade) + W/M, and my engines tolerated amazing amounts of abuse! :)
