To deal with the fungi and mold growing, you might want to add a couple springtails. You could also drop some pillbugs in there, of course you're gonna need to regulate their numbers. This can easily be done with some centipedes as they naturally prey on the young and weak individuals of the group. Centipedes and pillbugs love dark, humid places, so you could add some rocks or maybe some moss. To top it off, you can simply add a couple plants for color and life.

One comment on distilled water: I live in an area with hard water - really hard water. Thinning with hard water can actually create paint that leaves mineral deposits on the miniature (it looks like water spots - thin edges in the paint.) For those of us in this situation, distilled water is the best answer. It's the purest form of water. While that makes it a poor choice for drinking water (you're missing essential minerals), it makes it a great choice for painting, as it doesn't add any other chemicals to the paint other than 2 Hs and an O.
Just to be clear, though, if I didn't have tap water that forms stalactites on the faucet, I'd be using tap.

I've also had the paper curling, now I understand why that happens, thanks! I don't think it's that huge of a deal, I just try to avoid the bubbles and curls in the paper and take benefit of the wavy surface to mix some pools of paint in the recesses.

Great tips! After moving on from a DIY ice cream lid / baking parchment / tissue combo, I upgraded recently to a redgrass games wet palette. It's very good but my only complaint is that the papers it comes with are so thin that they have a tendency to rip if you try and reuse the same spot with the same paint to save on palette real estate making the paint leak through to the sponge. Maybe I just need to not be so tight and change the paper more often!

I add a small amount of mouthwash to the wet palette sponge. Beyond the alcohol, which in the palette won’t evaporate, it has menthol and other chemicals that retard biological growth in the sponge and keep it smelling better. It doesn’t seem to impact the paints at all at low concentrations.

Super useful demo. Solves a couple of minor frustrations I've felt with my wet palette. Like most people, I suspect, I wasn't getting my paper or my sponge wet enough to prevent some curling, or to keep paint hydrated as long as I would like. Your demonstration of setting up the palette in the sink, under running water, should resolve those issues. Thanks!

I’m using a DIY wet palette, parchment paper and paper towels as the water retaining vehicle. What I’m noticing is the paint is separating after a day or two. I usually add another drop of paint and mix it all together. However is that an indication that there is too much water soaked into the paper towel. Disclaimer the paper towel has been working great and I haven’t felt the need to go buy the flat sheet sponges, but I’m inching toward it.

You can use a cationic surfactant like cetyl ammonium bromide (buy it from ebay - called CTAB). Its a classic used in laboratories to keep water baths cleaner, longer. Make a solution that doesnt foam too much (low concentration) and use that in your pallette. It'll also help prevent your paints splitting at high dilutions.

Another option to prevent your sponge from getting funky, is to add a few drops of pure ammonia to the water in the sponge. This will not hurt your paints in any way. If your sponge has gotten funky, you can wash it in the sink with hot water, clear/non-scented dish soap, and a little bit of ammonia. Rise thoroughly, and the funk be gone!
I can recommend the Army Painter Wet Palette. Its what I have been using for the past 7 months, and works extremely well for me. Just don't use the paper that comes with it, its like tissue paper. I cut my own non-stick parchment paper to fit. Which I might add, you can also clean off in the sink and reuse a few times before you have to toss it.
    Thanks for the video!

I use a Pyrex 7211-PC container for my wet pallette, a double layer of paper towel and then parchment. I use distilled water but while I am adding it to the container, for a clean palette, I add in a couple drops of dehumidifier bacteriostat. (2-3 drops from a pipette) This has pretty much eliminated the funky anything problem unless you leave it for an extended amount of time. I can wipe off old paint from the parchment and add a little water and go for weeks, not that you should, but sometimes life and lazy gets in the way. I do brush lick but it is very minimal and you do notice if you add too much bacteriostat but too much also makes your paints dry funky on the pallette so no issue there as you would need to clean and rebuild a new one. Just looked at the one I was using before march 2020, havent done any hobbying since lock down, it is dryer than I would have it if it was in use but still wet. It also has one little spot of growth along an edge about an eighth of an inch in size and the container has a musty basement smell but not bad for four plus months of neglect. Bacteriostat works you just need to use it sparingly.

my one is a kids travel snakes and ladders tin ( cheap old kids toy from bargain store).... it is about 20mm thick and 150mm x 150mm... instead of sponge i use a kitchen cloth brand called Chux built up to about 6 layers (that way if it gets a lil funky it is cheap to easily replace), then the cheapest baking paper available...... and my pallet will hold my paint for up to a week even in dry hot australian summers......

to avoid "curling" i put the paper on top of it, as it curls flip it and press a bit, stays flat as a curl cancels the other, also using a transparent box ( i use citadel grass tufts box) and allowing sunlight to hit it really really slows down bacterial an mold growth.

The one problem I’ve always had with wet pallets is just finding usable baking paper, most of them in my area and online that I’ve bought all have a micro layer of some silicone/waxy feeling material on one side that doesn’t let anything through.

You can get them folded too. Reynolds Kitchens Non-Stick Baking Parchment Paper Sheets - 12x16 Inch, 22 Count.
Just cut off the two folds and you have four sheets that fit perfectly into the Mastersons wet pallete.

Best wet pallet: small cheap paint pots(like those that come with kids painting sets), a small airtight sealed container, ***non-organic*** sponge(to prevent mold), parchment paper, and a stick or completely worn down brush(and optional eye dropper for thinning). You use thr stick/brush to put a drop of paint in a pot, then get a drop of water and mix. You can take one pot out at a time and keep the rest in the sealed container wet. Using the pots with their lid *and* the sealed container basically create a humidor that keeps everything wet for a long time. I've had a few drops of paint last a couple months in a pot and still be wet enough. It's great for long projects, saving or reusing custom colors, or just good old mini painter procrastination.
It really does great to create a large batch,as large as you need, of the same custom color. Another benefit is not having to worry about space between colors and bleeding into each other. You also more or less never need to replace the parchment paper.
This is what I've used for years and it's great.

That's great advice. So it's like a tiny little group of individual wet pallete wells daisy chained together? Would a watercolor palette with the individual wells with lids work the same? I hate how the paints run into one another in my wet palette

I’ve been using a Rubbermaid, paper towel sponge wet palate for the last year and it’s been great. My only problem was mold buildup if I left it closed for too long but that was easily fixed by replacing the sponge and washing the container. It was even easier to prevent. I

I used much less water because I thought it would thin my paint. It was good though because of humid weather. I put my fully closed lit on and didn't have oppertunity to paint for months. When I opened my wet palette the paint was good to go again, except for the thinnest layer.
however I did suspect fungus beginning. The big mistake was, not to paint for months..

Also, if you have issues with dust and particles mixing into your paint on the wet pallette it'd be worth investing in a air purifier. Might save you having to take a knife to your miniature to dig up a tiny pube.

A good tip on humidity too - if you live in a place where you use the air conditioning a lot it will dry the room out.
Consider painting without the AC on.

I put the little beads of Gardeners potting Gel water retaining beads under my paper with a layer of highly absorbent sponge under that which is all well soaked in water.. The Gel beads retain water from the sponge ,soaked in water and they then feed the Paper . Works for me anyway.

After this video, I think I'll try baking paper again, especially since you mentioned about soft body acrylics, I find my paints not as usable or versatile with that paper vs when I made my own palette, contacted support and helped me through but its just not the same, hopefully its just a matter of changing the paper, although I would've loved to know this before buying the replacement pack, idk what I'm gonna do with all this paper :)

This is great information. I do think that humidity is a big factor with wet pallettes. For instance, where I'm at I have to worry less about mine getting "funky" and more about it drying out (it's super dry here).

Yep. I've been doing it wrong. I'd fill the palette til the sponge was fully saturated and the place the paper on top. Of course it curled so I just dragged water around the edges to keep it in place.
Gonna try this method later today. Wish me luck.

For growth or smells, just put a couple (literally 2 -3) drops of bleach in there when you refresh the water. You wont have to add any more bleach for a very long time, even if you are adding lots more water. For the metallic paints, I have had those Vallejo air metallic eat through the paper on the pallet just sitting there some how, that was no fun.

I use the Redgrass wet palette, but on the rare occasion that the sponge gets a little funky, I soak it in some white vinegar for a little while and then rinse it clean. I don't have to do it too often and it kills anything nasty or slimy.

Just get a plastic tupperware box thing like from a takeaway, get some paper towels folded up and some grease proof paper cut those to size to fit the box and then place paper towels in and grease proof ontop of it, fill it with water and wait for it to soak up, plus when you're all done you can put the lid ontop and put it aside.
