Oh and thank you for highlighting that the best esports titles have historically had roots in being modifications existing games because that's something i think a lot of people aren't as aware of these days
Former PM Dev here. Helping out with Combo Devils. Came across this video by chance while looking into Rivals 2. Shame I haven't found you before but I'm glad to have found you know. Thanks for this video :)
Sacrificing my room to help host the PM tournament was my favorite part of going to TBH. The stories those weekends created will be remembered for life.
I love telling the story of how we met and decided to travel to TBH together, and it may be over told but I think the story really captures the spirit of the PM community. "You play this game, I play this game. Do we need more reasons to drive 9 hours across multiple states to attend a tournament together?"
If it wasn't for Project M, I would never have been introduced to competitive platform fighters. To see the scene still fighting on like this is beautiful. Thanks for making the video Wisley!
You absolutely killed it, Wisely. if it wasn't for PM, I would never have found my local smash scene and, by extension, the FGC as a whole. PM probably changed my life, and now the FGC is one of my biggest passions.
Do you mean the east coast P+ netplay weekly with auto l-cancel, a dedicated build, and inclusive community??? This Shadowhawke guy must be the real deal!
This is so sick. I don't play Smash or PM but as a modder for a different fighting game, it's really great to see the lengths people will go to play their favorite game. Modding takes video games and makes it about the people, and it's what I love the most about it.
Amazing video! I've only been playing PM for a short while, so while I of course tangentially knew the history, it was nice to see it laid out in such a digestible manner, great work Wisely!
I worked on P:M a LONG time ago, and honestly I lost track of everything that was going on with it about 14 years ago. This video reminds me of all the good times, and I remain in awe of how passionate the community is. Thank you for making such a great video!
13:13 made me feel so heard. I loved PM, and going to tournaments back in the day is such a core part of my life. I'm mostly into other games now, but seeing players like Twisty and Kumatora still going strong makes me so happy. Power to P+. Fuck Nintendo.
I even encountered a guy who brought (an emulator setup of) PM to EVO '22 and was playing it near the casual setups. I didn't have my controller on me at the moment, but I totally wish I'd played that guy, just so I could say I did.
Ayo! Look, mom, I'm on TV! Seriously, though, thanks for highlighting us for the world to see. U've been with PM since 2.6 and even if the circumstances necessitating it suck, the rise of tbe shadow major has been some of the most fun I've had in competitive Smash, full stop. Wish I was able to travel outside of Texas for them, but maybe some day. Support your local PM scene! And if you don't think you have one, just check behind the walls
I can't wait to sit down and watch all of this. Tysm Wisely for another exciting video! I'm mostly into Melee, but I have a lot of memories with PM and will always be a supporter. I first discovered it back in 2012, when it was just a project to replace Falco's Shine in Brawl with the Melee one. So cool how it kept going from there, and despite all the unfortunate events, y'all never gave up. And shoutouts to Lucas, such a cool character!!
Absolutely phenomenal video. Thank you. My first project m tournament was the fight at fireside, a national Arcadian in 2021 that Shadowhawke won, and my first big tournament that I helped run was Shine out of shield in 2023, which Shadowhawke also won... Hmm
Man, I love this. Thanks for putting this together, Wisely. Competing and then being on the commentary team for PM at Kings of the North IV is one of my most core gaming memories. Being on mic for Prof Pro vs. Sothe was surreal. I miss PM man, thank you for this video eulogy.
Fun video. Love a good trip down memory lane. A lot of my best tournament memories come from random hotel rooms overcrowded with PM players from all around the world. It will always have a special place in my heart ❤
@@atWisely Miss you too man. I managed to actually get out to Shine out of Shield to watch Shadowhawke be dope live. Gotta go to more stuff this 2024 :)
Super awesome video, Wisely! Literally one of my best tournament performances was at a shadow major at LTC, I think it was called Shipwrecked 2? Maybe it was Shipfaced, I can't recall off the top of my head. But we started the event at 10pm because we had heard Nintendo reps were touring the facility during the day to make sure PM wasn't happening, so we literally just waited until they left to make some setups and start the tourney.
I SAW MY NAME. IM FAMOUS. But seriously i still play pm 3 times a week. It is and will forever be my fav game. Thanks to all the people who keep it alive and keep it goin. You all are the GOATS
oh hey! 7:00-8:00 that was my hotel room for top 8 lol. it was total luck. I happened to bring my laptop and streaming equipment, and happened to have a decent wifi signal in our room where most people in the hotel had next to 0 connection. Its funny you mention that plup made $260+, because 2nd place made more money. Bobby frizz was playing in GFs, and Darkrain stumbles in kinda drunk. He yells at bobby, telling him he sucks at the game etc etc, trash talk. People tell him to be quiet since we had noise warning from the front desk since it was so late. Someone mentioned this was GFs and to let them focus and darkrain LOSES it. "No way, he can't be in grands, I told him if he made money I would triple his earnings!" Bobby goes on to lose to plup, earning 2nd. Pulp makes 260 or so, and bobby makes over 300 lol. it was so cool to be a part of PM history like this. Thanks Wisely for making this, long live PM/P+. -JELLY
Nintendo hates PM cause they’re incapable of making a better game than it. I remember my Uber casual roommates asking if we could play pm instead of ultimate, cause shocker people like it when you can do fun and cool shit in the game 😂and skill gaps will always be a thing, i bodied them in both games and they still wanted to play the game with the larger skill gap
I liked Ultimate but man, it's so freaking LAME now. It was never meant to be competitive, they left the game in a similar state as Smash 4. P+ will outlive it, unless Nintendo gets their way (which is unfortunately very likely)
FINALLY MORE PM! i’ve been missing my favorite player MrLz for so so long as my older brother grew up watching him dominate with his character, been waiting for more gameplay/info to come out again recently, NINTENDO CANT STOP US!
Great video Wisley! Got pumped enough to pick up the controller and start labbing lmao. I spent a decade of my life training, traveling, and competing in this bastard child of a game, but I got you, and the entire scene out of it and I wouldnt trade it for the world. We have very real friends in alot of different places. We have been to places we normally wouldnt have ever visited. Nothing will ever give me adrenaline spikes like playing smash. A very special time in my life.
Endless respect for continuing to fly the PM flag high. I haven't attended a local in years but I still watch majors when I can and it makes me happy to see the scene still kicking after all this time.
I’ll always have PM to thank for making me who I am today. From the college game Room to being a TO. Pm changed the trajectory of my life. I’ve made so many friends from it. I miss pm and I miss you Wisely. You lived in Philly only briefly but you were such a cool guy I’m happy I got to meet you
@@atWisely yea I haven’t seen any of them in awhile either. Philly PM kinda dead rn but I’m sure if we tried to do something we could get like Dusty and Seraphim outta retirement 😂
a great video all about a great game. the love for their game that the pm scene has cant be beat. shine out of shield sounds like it was an amazing event to attend in person, wish i was there. i wonder who came up with the name for it 🤔
Man I haven't thought about P:M since i last played it at MAGfest last year. Someone brought their setup and I think I stopped by every day at least once or twice thst weekend lol.
Nintendo doesn't just hate project M, nintendo hates their fans in general especially the smash players. Anyways if PM/P+ gets roll back (I know its being worked on but isn't close to being done) I think we could see a resurgence at least a fairly large underground scene. I love playing P+ but I dont like the hassle of playing it online.
your mod is DEAD and your community gatekeepers HATE YOU (they'd rather keep a soulless corporation happy than run events they don't approve of) but that's okay because P+ exists and the real homies will keep playing it
AYOOO WISELY THANK YOU FOR THE SHOUTOUTTTTTTTTT
fantastic video, really highlighted all the struggles of the community,
you are the best
Thanks for making the section so easy to make, your Lucas is dope
This is now my biggest regret of throwing at shine so you could win
