Along with it's philosophy, the CGI and fighting scenes are also gorgeous. Shin Ultraman is a masterpiece that will long remembered.
I’d say both give off a sense of hope. Shin Godzilla shows us even in the most darkest times, humanity can come together and overcome any challenge. Shin Ultraman is essentially hope incarnate but of course thinks on how much he should actually do. Give too much and humanity gets dependent, give too little and they loose hope. Which is why he gives earth the means to do things by themselves. When you do things right, people won’t be sure you’ve done anything at all
@@maneoj46 I think both movies serve to push the message of unity and humanity coming together against a common enemy, only in shin godzilla they have to purely rely on themselves against a overwhelming enemy and in shin ultraman they have someone else guiding them to the right path.
@projekttaku1 Shin Gojira is about criticism of the Japanese government and how its too slow to react, and its leaders are too scared because they put too much pressure on themselves when it comes to failure. It says that hope and the power to adapt can often come from the misfits and neglected within our own ranks - the normal people can often rise up and do what the leadership is too paralyzed to do.

I love Ultraman as a kid but I was too young to know those meaning and perhaps too dumb, I'm glad to be able to now fully comprehend it now. Those meaning, the characters and the themes got me really hooked.
I made a good move rewatching all of the original 1966 Ultraman from beginning to end, to prep for Shin Ultraman. Although it has some of its own modern twists and flavor (like removing the grunts which I kinda don’t like but oh well) the movie did an amazing job going over the highlights of the original series’s plot. It also takes a lot from so many other Ultraman media such as the anime OVA, the misprint, and Narita’s original artwork. It’s truly a love letter made by fans, for the fans.
@@annoying_HK_guy In my opinion, Anno is no longer able to understand shinji. He's not lonely anymore. Beside, he need evangelion to gain money so he can save anime's i.p. from gainax.

LOVED Shin Ultraman! While the story and characters weren’t as good as in Shin Godzilla IMO (and yes, Ultraman felt a little rushed), overall I loved every bit of it. The old school music and homages were fantastic, and the effects and cinematography were done beautifully. Can’t wait to own it on physical media. The fight against Gabora was my favorite scene.
For me, Shin Ultraman was well worth the wait! I'm glad to see it do well in Japan and in the U.S.! I appreciate your thoughtful analysis of the movie.
Beautiful video highlighting the best parts of what might just be my favorite film, as a gigantic fan of Ultraman, I'm always awed and humbled by the main message and hope this film gives, and how well it has an understanding of Ultraman. It's intepretation of the original character is so fitting and so powerful, and the ending never fails to make me feel all kinds of emotions. Thank you so much for highlighting everything beautiful about this film in your video, you did an amazing job with it!
Shin Ultraman is the most enjoyable cinema experience I had in 2022. I tried bring some friends to watch it, but most of them don't quite get it as they struggle to follow the plot of the movie. Only my brother fully resonanted with the movie like me.
You still remain to be one of the channels where whenever a new video alert drops I either drop what I’m already watching on TH-cam or put time aside to really sit and watch your stuff lol. Love your analysis videos! Keep it up man!🔥🔥 Also idk if you had already seen the film months beforehand, but in case if you waited until people in the states had a chance to watch it themselves to make this video I appreciate it haha
I was utterly delighted by the show, couldn't help by clap at some of the sound effects, and I had a smile on from the amazing open to the end. It was a great experience for a long time fan. A great story and lots of call backs. I brought my wife, who has seen several kaiju movies with me, but hadn't seen any Ultraman (she doesn't care for superheroes much). Afterwards she said it was her favorite kaiju film, even better han Shin Godzilla (a movie she'll put on for background entertainment when we're gaming or painting). She asked when it would be on blue ray as we were walking out. That's high praise from her.
It was crazy nostalgic to see Ultraman through the modern lens, from people behind Eva and Shin Gojira, no less. I would've liked if they added the legacy sounds of the og grunts and if they had more time to flesh out the story, but overall I enjoyed it immensely and loved the hopeful and optimistic themes akin to Superman. Can't wait for Shin Kamen Rider, for sure. I wonder if they're making something big with these Shin films, or if they'll continue to revitalize Japanese cultural icons like Super Sentai materials
I grew up with Untraman. To watch Shin Ultraman I had to buy the DVD since they never released it in the UK. I absolutely love it and would adore a sequel indeed!
I'm happy I was able to watch the movie. I hope Shin Ultraman succeeds in the west and leads to people picking up the show to fully grasp Ultramans positive messages!
I’d love to see a sequel to Shin Ultraman! Having this be my first exposure to the franchise was amazing and I’d love to see the story continue. The ending really felt open for more to me.
Great video dude. Love that you showed all the shot for shot comparisons. I didn't have the patience to try and find all of those for my review last year. Fantastic work.
Shin Ultraman is probably my favorite superheroe movie in years, close to the Dark Knight. Way better than some MCU movies and DC movies. You can feel the passion and love for this character, how empowering it is, and, overall, is so fun.
I don't quite think it falls short of Shin Godzilla by any extent, I think it was more a matter of the two having very different things to convey to the audience. Overall I think it stands as probably the best way to modernize the original concept of the first series and still give it its own identity.
I loved Shin Ultraman more in hindsight simply because the polish works really well with the legit unrealism of CGI special effects. If anything the feeling of Ultraman's precise and stilled movements combined with his size gives him such a distinct uncanny look in his movements. And that is far more appealing that the rotten noisy effects of most modern blockbusters. If anything Shin Ultraman shows you that operating on limitations can bring out better aesthetics and pacing. Because I'm not sure what else could have been added to such a well paced and emotional film.
I absolutely freakin' love that Shin Gomess' CG model was actually a "recycled" CG model of Shin Godzilla in reference to the fact that the original Gomess suit was a modified Godzilla MosuGoji suit.
Being old enough to have experienced the original Ultraman series in the early 70's, along with Johnny Sokko and his Flying Robot, I was a very young impressionable kid that just fell in love with these shows. Then later in my adult life, I managed to watch every series and episode of Ultraman up to Ultraman Blazar; many of which I have in my personal DVD collection. I have yet to lose interest and optimism for the direction of the Ultraman TV shows and movies. Even Shin Ultraman made me feel like a kid again, including the reference back to Ultra Q -- I absolutely loved it all. Yes, there are little things about many of the shows I could pick at, but nothing I'd care to share; they're just personal issues I have with some little things. But ultimately, I focus my attention to the show as whole and as an enjoyable story that brings me incredible joy and happiness. I tend to spend very little of my time focusing on the periphery; set designs, costumes, characters, etc., to pick at, such as, I am not a fan of CG but love Live Action most of all ...I still just simply love the shows. I am now going through each and every series and episode of Kamen Rider and Super Sentai Ranger as well; two more shows I have absolute love for, and most of which I did not have available in my childhood, but now I have them all in my collection, I get to enjoy them all as well. I just love Toei for all they've done in making wonderful shows... to me, Toei is a blessing for my life, so many wonderful series beyond Kamen Rider, Super Sentai, and Ultraman. But to me, Ultraman is important beyond a show, it is a spiritual journey of perseverance of finding value in life, it is of always about supporting the ideal of respecting and protecting nature, earth and life for the sake of humanity and hope -- hope for a better and safer future for all.
Nicely done. I thoroughly enjoyed the film. The film took me back to a 6 year old me watching this and Space Giants in rural New Jersey, 50 plus years ago. Some of the callback elements really moved me. I went in hoping for some references to Susumu Kurobe, and the Alien Baltan. When the credits ran, I found that I didn't miss them at all. Have a good evening.
My 2 favorite shows as a kid Ultraman and Mazinger . Not just the shows either , the toys they had back in the 70's from the shows were awesome . 3 foot tall robots with spring loaded fists , the 6 inch all metal action figures with spring loaded fists . Watching Shin Ultraman brought back so many memories .
Same here, Shin Ultraman introduced me to so much media besides anime in japan and went to see Shin Kamen Rider a couple months later after watching the original series. Honestly I'm so glad that the Shin series was started because having now watched Ultra Q and Ultraman it makes me love Shin Ultraman that much more. It was the right film at the right time.
The best adaptation of any classic series. It feels different and yet familiar. Very glad they kept the music and SFX and also recreated a lot of the scene. And yeah, the transformation at the end feels as exciting as when i feel as 4 years old. Lack of shuwatch was a pity but, i was just too happy with such faithful adaptation that still captures the excitement of the original series. 9.5/10
Watching this make me wonder how Shin kamen rider is going to be? Based on the trailer and the Shocker side manga, spider man, bat man, bee woman and presumably scorpion man are in the movie so they are adapting ep 1,2,3 and 8 and along with introducing ichimonji so they could adapt bits of ep 14 and 15
This movie truly reinvented Ultraman in a way that I needed. The CGI was fantastic, and the action delivered to my expectations. I also notice that Ultraman's human form is similar to Ultraseven's and Mebius'. There's normally a duality between Ultraman and his human form, but this time it was just Ultraman being fully conscious. That sounds about interesting. I would love to see a sequel to this movie, and I wonder what other Ultramen can be reinvented in that movie's universe.
It was so much fun to see the Fathom event. I felt like a kid again seeing the update to the fights and effects and an adult with the themes explored and take on the story. Great film. Thank you for the review.
This video brings to mind a moment from Ultraman Saga, during the final battle between Saga and Hyper Zetton. Saga is a miracle fusion of three Ultramen from different backgrounds, and Hyper Zetton is an artificial god created from the sacrifices of thousands of people. As the fight goes on, humanity flies in, and says: "Ultraman, we believe in you, do you believe in us?" And the response is: "I always have."
It was an awesome movie. I'm not well versed on Ultraman's lore, but I could feel the deep respect for the character, story, ideas and craftsmanship of the original. Wonderful.
Shin Ultraman is currently my favorite movie of all time. As a massive Showa fanboy, I was reduced to a cackling, euphoric mess every time a classic ‘66 scene was referenced. It also helped that I was probably the only person in that theater so I could mimic every iconic grunt, screech, and roar to my heart’s content. (Zetton’s is my favorite, despite it just saying its name repeatedly) The visuals, the characters, the dialogue, the action; it was everything I could have dreamed a high-budget reboot could be and more.
I loved it. I enjoyed all of the fights, though I think my favorite has to be against Alien Zarab. Shin Ultraman was amazing to see up on the big screen. If it would be handled with just as much care as the original, I'd love to see a sequel. I would just hope that the scope of the film could be bigger.
Can't wait to see how they tackle shin man and hopefully redeem him from becoming somewhat of a joke like the original. And how could I forget, the shear HYPE that's going to come when ultra seven gets announced. Can't wait to see modern eye slugger in action and the CAPSULE MONSTERS HOW COULD I FORGOT THE ORIGINAL CAPSULE MONSTERS?!! SEVEN IS GOING TO BE SUCH A CHAD I JUST KNEW IT!
Shin Ultraman is……strange for a remake The plot are, undoubtedly very cramped, yet feel natural despite being too fast It's definitely something come from OG TV show, but doesn't meant is focus on kids The only regret are why human is worth saving,if most of them are power hungry and selfish? Adding 20 more mintues for Ripia learning the beauty of humanity from SSSP would have been better I will give it a 8.7/10,the CGI are superb in Tokusatsu industry, while retains the feel from OG show in modern setting I am definitely waiting Shin Ultraseven or Return(Anno favorite show)
I can remember being in kindergarten re-enacting Ultraman during recess. We found an old bicycle grip in the playground and that became our beta capsule. Lol!
As for me i love it because of how well they made the stories is. I thought it's gonna be not that good but after watching it, it's so phenomenal and so original to the story line. Old but new in simple word just like shin godzilla as well
Man I love to watch your take on Anno’s Shin Kamen Rider. I watched it 2 times already and it’s the most personal of Anno’s Shin series. It’s very divisive buta an amazing love letter to someone’s childhood memories and hero. Makes me cry several time
Have been ultra-series fan since childhood. I mostly grow up with heisei Ultras starting from Tiga and so on. I hardly watch showa era ultras however when I see first scene of Shin Ultraman I immediately recognised it a real deal Ultraman's story. You can feel and see the core of Ultra despite not having much knowledge about original source. This is truly made by Ultraman fan to Ultraman's fan. Anno's writing also done very beautifully. With upcoming Ultraman "Blazer". I can see Tsuburaya finally try to make serious ultra series again after a long fucking time especially after Nexus. Shin Ultraman might as well realize this potential to Tsuburaya. All I can say it beautiful.
I haven't seen anyone else bring this up before, but something I personally really appreciated was how characters are very straight forward in their conversations. There's very little longwinded philosophical wank in order to convey the ideas of the movie. If a character has something to say, they will... well... they will just say it. At first this made the dialog feel a bit odd, but i got used to it quite quickly. It also gives the film a certain almost abstract vibe, like an experimental art film. It's absolutely an acquired taste in that regard, but it will stick with me for a very long time.
Rewatched The film so naturally Id rewatch this video. "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man laid down his life for his friends" goddamn that gets me.
Mr. Blunova, this is an outstanding review! I saw another one on facebook, and all they said was that it was "a good remake but structurally all over the place". After seeing this and the comments, I'm relieved that some true fans really like it. This review is perfect, and the director Higuchi made every scene and transitions intentionally to be an homage to the original. And, as Blunova pointed out, the writer Anno Hideaki wanted this rebooted Ultraman to look as much like the original creator Narita's Ultraman as possible. Despite speculation, the production company didn't run out of money, and every throw-back effect (like the black-and-white final fight scene) was intentional. I watched it when it first came out in Japan with no subtitles of course, but that just made me focus on the movie with my limited Japanese lingusitic knowledge. So, I recommend that if you didn't get it the first time, try just watching it for the awesome visuals sans subtitles, and you will see that it is a great movie. Make some popcorn too. Higuchi Shinji is amazing! And, by the way, Mephilas (Yamamoto Koji) steals the m#ther f@#king show!
I watched the Ultraman series as a kid. I went just for nostalgia's sake and I was blown away!. Gone were the uniforms, helmets, ray guns , submarines and VTOL attack craft with flames. Just an elite team in Business Suits and an AI computer. It turned out to be a political thriller with monsters as a backdrop. I miss the LOW BATT signal. I already own the DVD.
Well done man. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. The music was great. The shots were great. The pacing was a bit much at times. But themes were great. My favorite scene is where Mephilas and Ultraman are talking on the swings. I really enjoyed all the fights. Can’t wait to buy it when it comes out.
Yeah the main issue with the movie is how it tried to fit too many things in a short time, and those camera angles keep making me say "am I watching Evangelion again with these low angle shots?" Ideally the pacing would be great for duology so some stuff could still be expanded without overstaying its welcome, but I guess Anno only had this one chance so he had to put all the eggs in one basket.
I genuinely love Shin Ultraman. It was quick-paced but it told a proper story. It evolved from native kaiju from Earth to alien appearances on Earth instead. The way they portray Ultraman was nothing like the ones we know now and hearing Ultraman said that humans were worth fighting for, I began having flashbacks from UltraSeven. I hope there is a Shin UltraSeven though. I really wanna see them reinvent the Ultra Brothers lore that fits well with the original plot to the 1966 series.
Interesting observation about Taki and his character. The models and the like on his work computer are all from series that has humanity working together as a team to overcome seemingly impossible odds. When faced with the real scope of things, he allows himself to be drowned in sorrow but needs to be reminded of the truth he grew up with all his life. That humanity can do great things when backed against the wall and do the impossible. I know Anno is a old school nerd so using the Thunderbirds fleet, the 1701 and others as background items cannot be mere chance.
Great both shin Godzilla and shin ultraman are now in my top favorite films of all time these films are what I love to show to new comers to kaiju and tokusatsu both are fantastic and beautiful films I’d recommend to absolutely anyone

I was very impressed overall with the film. But it took awhile for me to get into the pacing. I would love to see a Shin Ultraseven one day.
@@KunaiLeech Tsuburaya pro kind of poo-poo'ed the idea of the movie being a trilogy originally because they weren't sure how successful trilogy will be so I dont know how they'd change course realizing that the movie made a lot of money and media buzz.
Ultraseven is my first Ultraman i watch. But if it only be just like the 'awful' remake that is KR Blacksun then I'd rather not
@@TheZooropaBaby I mean they need to take care of their profit too. They have lost too much from the Chaiyo bullshit and still recovering from it.
Waiting even longer for Shin Leo.
Among countless of "switch your brain off" movies and shows recently, this movie was spectacular. I love Ultraman as a kid but I was too young to know those meaning and perhaps too dumb, I'm glad to be able to now fully comprehend it now. Those meaning, the characters and the themes got me really hooked.
I love how this movie is more than just a remake of original series. The fact that they went with original design.
What does it take from the Ultraman OVA?
I just love that Anno put more heart into Shin Ultraman than Evangelion.
Ultraman is life,Ultraman is love
Evangelion is just job XD
~Hideaki Anno and Higuchi Shinji,apparently
@@annoying_HK_guy In my opinion, Anno is no longer able to understand shinji. He's not lonely anymore.
Beside, he need evangelion to gain money so he can save anime's i.p. from gainax.
@@cedricwine He just don't want his Edgy Ultraman Fanfic(Evangelion) get any worst XD

II'm glad I wasn't the only one comparing this movie to Man of Steel of all things.
Shin Ultraman has what that movie never had, love for its characters, love for its audience, love for humanity.
Bc MOS is a character study of Clark Kent.
@@jackie8449 ehhh
@@jackie8449 Man of Steel is garbage from a miserable man who once released fascist propaganda into theaters. Shin Ultraman gives hope to humanity by reminding us we work better together, not against one another.
@@jackie8449 And a good one too.
@@EmonWBKstudios Yea fairly sure that was the message behind MoS. The human governments distrusted Superman even though they should have trusted him. Superman wanted the Kryptonians to do that too but they refused to listen to him. That movie is anything but garbage. Shin Ultraman is nowhere near as good as it.
I loved it. I especially loved the reference to Ultra Q in the intro.
Keep it up man!🔥🔥
Also idk if you had already seen the film months beforehand, but in case if you waited until people in the states had a chance to watch it themselves to make this video I appreciate it haha
I would definitely be interested in a Shin Ultraman and a Shin Ultraseven team up.
and shin ultraman ace
Also Shin Ultraman Taro, Shin Ultra Father,Ultra Mother ,and of course Shin Ultra King
I love the movie and I really love the Kenshi Yonezu's theme for the movie.
I wonder if they're making something big with these Shin films, or if they'll continue to revitalize Japanese cultural icons like Super Sentai materials
the superman themes are very fitting when you consider that shin ultraman's design is based on a ultraman painting called "truth, justice and beauty."
I got to see this in theaters and everyone was laughing hysterically at the “scent” scene. It was a good time!
I grew up with the original show during the 70's, and I can't stress how much I love what they did with it!
Saw the original series a few years back but forgot this film came out. Watched it and loved every second of it, what an amazing film.
Makes me happy to be alive.
I’d love to see a sequel to Shin Ultraman! Having this be my first exposure to the franchise was amazing and I’d love to see the story continue. The ending really felt open for more to me.
Shin Ultraseven.
Loved this movie, it was everything I wanted. My favorite scene is the bar scene between Ultraman and Mephilas.
Remember Space Giants? That was a wild ride early morning before school
Legit finished watching this show last week and then watched the movie. Both are incredible. I can’t believe I’ve been missing out on this.
I'd never seen any Ultraman before watching this movie and it absolutely blew me away. 5/5
I love Shin Traman, it was movie of the year. So hyped for Shin Men Rider
The research in these videos always impresses me
The best adaptation of any classic series.
This is how you give nostalgia in a remake/adaptation movie. Hollywood, take notes!
This video brings to mind a moment from Ultraman Saga, during the final battle between Saga and Hyper Zetton. Saga is a miracle fusion of three Ultramen from different backgrounds, and Hyper Zetton is an artificial god created from the sacrifices of thousands of people. As the fight goes on, humanity flies in, and says:
"Ultraman, we believe in you, do you believe in us?"
And the response is:
"I always have."
My Family & I seen Shin Ultraman in theaters, & we enjoyed it.
It was an awesome movie. I'm not well versed on Ultraman's lore, but I could feel the deep respect for the character, story, ideas and craftsmanship of the original. Wonderful.
I love this movie and loved watching it in theaters.
Can't wait to add it to my Ultraman Media collection and watch it again and again.
The OG Ultraman has got to be one of my favorite TV Shows.
This video legitimately helped cure my depression, perfect essay on a perfect film
I loved it.
I enjoyed all of the fights, though I think my favorite has to be against Alien Zarab.
Shin Ultraman was amazing to see up on the big screen. If it would be handled with just as much care as the original, I'd love to see a sequel. I would just hope that the scope of the film could be bigger.
This looks to be a masterpiece. Can't wait to see it 💖
This was such a great video, love the kygo at the end
“Blunova posted a new video”… One of my favorite sayings 😁
Edit: 1:49 Matchan cameo FTW! 😎
Shin Ultraman is……strange for a remake
The plot are, undoubtedly very cramped, yet feel natural despite being too fast
It's definitely something come from OG TV show, but doesn't meant is focus on kids
The only regret are why human is worth saving,if most of them are power hungry and selfish?
Adding 20 more mintues for Ripia learning the beauty of humanity from SSSP would have been better
I will give it a 8.7/10,the CGI are superb in Tokusatsu industry, while retains the feel from OG show in modern setting
I am definitely waiting Shin Ultraseven or Return(Anno favorite show)
I like how Takumi Saito actually looks like Ultraman.
I can remember being in kindergarten re-enacting Ultraman during recess. We found an old bicycle grip in the playground and that became our beta capsule. Lol!
Great content! I started with this video, and now I have to watch the rest in your channel. Subscribed!
Now this is how you do a reboot!
As for me i love it because of how well they made the stories is. I thought it's gonna be not that good but after watching it, it's so phenomenal and so original to the story line. Old but new in simple word just like shin godzilla as well
Love the movie. I watched it more than 3 times already !
Thank you for your thoughtful and positive review of this film!
As a proud fan of the OG Ultraman and Ultra Seven in particular-I simply HAVE to see this movie after your video essay on it!
Did you watch it?
How is it?
Your Superman comparison was exactly what I thought watching Shin Ultraman in the theater
As a fan of both creative leads previous works and of Ultraman and Gridman, this is sounding a lot like a must watch to me.
Yeah the main issue with the movie is how it tried to fit too many things in a short time, and those camera angles keep making me say "am I watching Evangelion again with these low angle shots?"
Ideally the pacing would be great for duology so some stuff could still be expanded without overstaying its welcome, but I guess Anno only had this one chance so he had to put all the eggs in one basket.
It’s also crazy how that Rebuild Evangelion, Shin Gojira, Shin Ultraman and Shin Kamen Rider all share a timeline!
“One of my favorite quotes.” One of my favorite quotes.
I bursted out laughing the second I saw that Zoffy clip again in Shin Ultraman this time
Man! Great video, thank you. Owned a follow
4:38 and in another scene we see shin godzillas frozen body which means shin godzilla takes place during the shin ultraman version of ultra Q's events
Definitely need a sequel to this piece of awesome cinema!
great movie, love how Ultraman flies it's like gravity and laws of physics don't exist, even that spinning kick looks so alien
64. That is the number of re-edits I did of my review about this wonderfull movie. Khara just wont stop blocking it for 6 single seconds.
So glad I came across this video. Im definitely gonna watch this movie on my projector 📽️
Great both shin Godzilla and shin ultraman are now in my top favorite films of all time these films are what I love to show to new comers to kaiju and tokusatsu both are fantastic and beautiful films I’d recommend to absolutely anyone
