I laugh at that scene, so does the other audience at the theater. I only realize later that it was actually to assure that his broken leg were fully healed. I believe most of people who watched it haven't realize that at all.
This film just shows how much Anno respects this franchise. People complained that the action was hard to follow, when it was just trying to replicate the episode camera angles and franticness that were represented.
@@tootygroody Yeah, I was caught off guard by the overall CGI in the second half of the film. I get using it for Shin Godzilla and Shin Ultraman, but I was really hoping Shin Kamen Rider wouldn't need much of that.
As someone who has seen every single Kamen Rider series, I think an additional point of value to the film is how it incorporates not only elements from the Showa era, but Heisei and Reiwa as well. The secondary hero starting as an enemy/rival before joining the hero's side, a competent action female heroine, the personal relationships between the villain's faction, and the final boss being a kamen rider himself. All of this has been present in the last 5 series in some shape or form. So this film works as an encapsulation of everything Kamen Rider ever was and what it ever will be. It may not be all intentional, Hayato Ichimonji was a rival at first in the manga as you said, but whatever intentions there were, the movie ends up being this beautiful blend of all 3 eras of Kamen Rider into one. From the themes, character personalities and fight scenes. Every series has always been messy to some degree, every show has something that doesn't work quite well, be it the storytelling, the suits, the action, or the characters. But Kamen Rider is still awesome for the good each series has in spite of the flaws. So the 50th-anniversary celebration film being messy, but with a solid heart, perfectly represents what this franchise has always been. You need the drama and dark scenes, but you also need the wacky fight scenes, over-the-top characters, and general silliness to properly represent Kamen Rider on the big screen. And it's all here.
To be fair with the Showa era, these elements have already been in there. The personal relationship between the villain's faction, and the he final boss being an Kamen Rider are elements present in the Kamen Rider Black manga; the enemy/rival rider changing sides happened with both, Ichimonji and Riderman (who even though is not a secondary Kamen Rider, served as inspiration to those who had that role in Heisei/Reia); and at last, i'm gonna die on the hill that Electronic Human Wave Tackle is a competent action female character and that is a positive point that she doesn't have to be a Kamen Rider.
I feel the same way about both Shin Godzilla and Shin Ultraman. The films do not hide from the cheesy or limitations of the original special effects or budgets of the source material. They understand the fans love the series, not in spite of the issues but because of all the scuff and cheesy moments. None of these tokosatsu series would be the same without their flaws. The flaws have become as iconic as the characters themselves. Anno really loves these series, and it shows. Good stories can be told in any genre or medium. Stories become iconic when they manage to overcome their limitations to make their fans feel something. That could be excitement, fear, love, anger, or even hope. In the modern internet connected world, real emotions and expressing them have become something "cringe" or embarrassing. Old school stories about heroes and villains, good guys vs bad guys, brave warriors vs monsters, are all the polar opposite of crimge. They invite the fans to openly and freely live in the moment and cheer when the hero defeats the villains. Yes, it is cheesy, and it looks cheap and outdated, but its honest fun and sometimes the world needs for its heroes to still be the good guys and the villains to truly be monsters in the end. Black and white storytelling may not be realistic, but by god, it is entertaining.
Shin kamen rider is such an interesting movie it’s clearly flawed and has its issues but I feel it the charm of it feels really faithful to the original and the dedication and heart put into it which I feel evens out the flaws
This film helps me facing my depression in 2024. There's something about this movie while it is messy, it just touch my soul. Even first time watching in theater months ago.
My favorite film of all time. A great message for the current culture, supported by creative and stunning special effects, make for a film that actually moved me when I first saw it. Kamen Rider is my favorite THING ever, and I see no reason that'll ever change.
i enjoyed shin ultraman as it was a more cohesive experience but let me say this i've never cried in my life watching movies in the theaters until the scene where hongo is crying alone man that hurt me really bad
This movie was a crazy theater experience. I dont think ive ever had such a big dumb grin on my face watching something before. The spider aug fight starting with a remix of Let's Go Rider Kick into recreating those shots of the SHOCKER goons simply had me happy
19:04 This Ruriko in the movie resembles a little bit of "Mylene Hoffman" the female cyborg spy from 60s Ishinomori's manga 009-1 (and the 2000's anime version).
I personally didn't mind the occasional weird cgi. It may have been copium, but I thought that it enhanced the idea that these are superhumans doing things that are impossible for normal people. The fixed view on the face of Bat and Wasp were especially effective for me, highlighting the creepy factor. The jerky motion during the Wasp fight felt like a live action version of DBZ fights, showing how normal humans wouldn't be able to perceive the full motion of fighters moving at inhuman speed.
Kamen Rider was never a concept very far from body horror, and Ishinomori was never a creator who strayed far from the dark side of his concepts. He and Anno would have had a lot to talk about
Had Ishinomori had his wat, Kamen Rider would have outright had body horror, as shown in Kamen Rider Shin (not to be confused for the film talked in the video).
Man that behind the scenes footage where Anno blew a gasket over the fight choreography of the final battle was unsettling to the stunt director 😮 he wanted to look like a dirty low down wrestling that we saw in the final product.
This movie gave me everything I wanted out of a “shin kamen rider” film. It’s the original series given a new coat of paint, and all its pros and cons are turned up to 11. Add a bit of Annos style, and it’s a great time.
A great examination of a great film, quality that one has come to expect from your channel. Shin Kamen Rider was a real highlight of 2023, and long overdue for a rewatch, but for now, this will make do
Shin Ultraman is still the best Shinverse movie I've ever watched. But Shin Kamen Rider is definitely something I would watch repeatedly to remind me of what being human is like. If there is one thing I definitely was disappointed about is that they didn't call out their finisher name. I remember how cool it was just hearing him yell "Raidaaa! Kiiiikku!"
One little touch that I love (though I’m sure this was unintentional just because of how known the actor is) is that while paying more tribute to Ishinomori in Robot Detective K, they got to cast Tori Matsuzaka, Shiba Takeru of the Shinkengers himself, as his VA. Almost like a small nod to Ishinomori co-creating Goranger and JAKQ with one of the most famous and popular super sentai actors.
The eyes on the helmet are definitely not aligned with the actors' actual eyes, more their foreheads, right? I can't stop thinking about this whenever I look at the riders
I enjoyed this video. When I first watched Shin Kamen Rider I thought of Ichiro's plan of sending everyone to the habitat was rather childish in the face of the happiness of humanity. I've watched it several times since then but then I learned that there was a Shin Kamen Rider manga which explores Ichiro and his reasons and that did more than open my eyes. In that manga Ichiro starts out so bright and hopeful by the time you see him reach where he was in the movie it is heartbreaking. The associates he had, Spider AUG, Scorpion AUG and K were like the family he never had, that he grew close to. Shared a bond and opened his heart with. But SHOCKER as an organization in the manga hasn't changed much from the show, throughout his climb as an executive he tried to accomplish peace and harmony and things without bloodshed. Even with the realization that Ruriko is his sister from an artificial womb and his father lying to his face he still tried being good, but the other executives as well as the now changed Spider AUG wanted him to stoop as low as they did. But then you understand what the habitat really is, a sort of heaven where the souls of those gone from this world reside in. A dream he cannot attain because of how emotionally crippled he becomes as time passes. He is destined to fail even as he tries to be good. Eventually the bonds he made in SHOCKER break away and he is left alone with Ruriko and even then the connection he had with her is weak than when it began. SHOCKER SIDE more than gives more detail to these villains, it gives such life that it becomes a tragedy. His ideals are misguided in the way he has isolated himself when he should have opened his heart as he did when he was younger.
even with its flaws I absolutely adore this film. I'm a pretty new KR fan but this has pretty easily become my favorite superhero film and one of my favorites of all time. I just really like how weird and authentic it is. that coupled with the spectacular action and pretty good cg makes it one of the most fun movies to rewatch when I'm bored.
Frickin finally! 💚👍 well done mate. If i may, i'd like to request an essay on Kamen Rider Kuuga. I think its very influential on creating the future landscape of tokusatsu (more serious grounded drama, threats, and dark)
Great review! You went deep into the layers in this movie. It's a really rewarding one to unpack. As a bit of a Showa boomer, I'm really glad for something darker, in contrast to current seasons with their toy props, belts playing dubstep, and particle effects all over the screen. Nothing against those, I enjoy modern KR too, but the original show was what really got me on this toku train. The more restrained feel definitely made the over the top elements, like the fights in the air and the motorcycle chases, really pop. Those felt like images a fan has imagined while watching the show as a kid. Anno definitely got carried away as far as stuffing every single thing he's always wanted in a Kamen Rider thing, but I don't see that as a negative necessarily, it felt like a story he's been sitting on for decades. With the Evangelion connections (like blu brought up, the crossover marketing matches up a little too well), it feels like the most Anno thing possible. I've definitely struggled with his ideosyncracies in this movie, being a huge fan of Fujioka's depiction of Hongo, but I can forgive Anno for getting personal with it. What he and Ikematsu did with Hongo was very different, but still in the spirit of Kamen Rider. We always hear about how he's the crying hero (hence the helmet teardrops), but now we actually see it. There's a lot of back and forth with regards to Anno's auterism, but I think it's fair to say his voice is the strongest here, unlike the previous Shins. That said, Higuchi's input is sorely missed. I think the problems with how the action scenes were filmed could've been mitigated by Higuchi, being the much more experienced of the two when it comes to live action. If the sequel does get made, I hope they share directing duties again (and that Anno is less protective in general). I can see the criticism with regards to the number of fight scenes, but some of them I wouldn't want to give up for anything. The Bat-Aug sequence is probably the easiest to cut but that Rider Kick was spectacular. I guess they could've added more downtime scenes in-between; I'm really curious how the bluray edit (coming this November), where they reformat the movie into a 5-episode miniseries with extended scenes will play out. I'm glad you mentioned the effect of the pandemic on the film, as far as the empty feel of it. I don't feel it's as pervasive as with other pandemic productions, which will probably help it age better, but it does give the film an interesting melancholy. It reminds me of Dark Souls, where the audience is picking up the pieces of an already broken world. Shin KR is probably the most rewarding movie to rewatch lately, for me. I walked away from the theater screening (God, what a cool thing that was) a little letdown by how messy it was, but when you already know how everything plays out, you can just settle in. Every time I've talked about this movie I've ended up rambling at length because it's so heartfelt. It's like seeing a person put on a play about their personal growth, using the toys of their childhood.
I just got into Kamen Rider and started with Shin Kamen Rider. I was so confused but I loved the action and style that Anno presented in the movie. Leave it to Blunova to produce the video I need for this movie.
I watched the movie a couple days ago and, while I liked it, it didn’t do much for me, someone that has little to no knowledge of kamen rider or tokusatsu in general. I think this video helped me find the right lenses to think about it and really appreciate it. It really was a nice one to watch
Should've mentioned that there's a prequel manga, "There is No True Peace in This World -Shin Kamen Rider SHOCKER SIDE-" detailing Ichiro's rise(or rather, his fall) among the SHOCKER executive. However, do note that you probably need to watch the movie first in order to fully appreciate the manga
This was my first introduction to the kamen rider franchise. It took me a second to calibrate to the wavelength if this movie, but once i got into it, it was a lot of fun.
I really like Anno-san's take on "Cutey Honey" and I've been a huge fan of Kamen Rider for a good 22 years now. I really enjoyed "Shin Kamen Rider" because I found it a loving tribute to an iconic series. In fact, in general, I find the Shin movies to be exactly that; loving tributes to iconic characters made by fans who take them very seriously. I liked how Anno-san introduced Takeshi's horror over killing others into the mix along with the kind of trauma from forced cybernetic/genetic augmentation he was doubtless suffering, which even though he was a bit *too* weepy over it for me? It made him more plausible and believable, and likable as well. Really hardcore old school fans probably disagree with me and may have wanted to see a verbatim new take on Ichigo who is a hard charging tough guy without feelings or emotions who just wants to Make The Bastards Pay, but I disagree. Still going to add this Blu ray to my collection when I can get it finally.
I like the Thumbnail used a mixed of Ishinomori Shotaro and Spirits like style It pretty much are my favorite film of 2023 despite many criticism, at first I was not interested of it because of Amazon and BLACK SUN, whom I enjoy but hated some main part in them The ending have a very large Studio Ghibli feeling This is what Kamen Rider should be: an unstoppable good force of nature yet have moments of weakness, Amazon and BLACK SUN have their moments, but I really don't like of them being too real Ishinomori sensei would love this film because it really have his manga "fast paced yet tell a lot" vibe
seeing this in a small theater in ohio with other toku/rider fans was SO HYPE! it was messy yes but god do i love kamen rider so much and this film was no different!
even as someone who thinks the film is more than perfect, i do wish there were some more of those "human" moments as you mentioned. it's interesting to imagine what this movie could have been, but again i am so so happy with the finished product and just love this movie so much.
Its funny that no matter how much Anno may hate Evangelion and its fanbase, its success makes him unable to let it go and make different shit. Everything Anno touches has Evangelion in it, Anno liking it or not, Anno intending it or not. lol
It's because Evangelion is heavily influenced by early Tokusatsu he loved(Ultraman and Kamen Rider) I hated Evangelion but like Shin Ultraman and Shin Kamen Rider
@@miragebangbravern yeah he hated the fanbase not the series otherwise why would he decided to "remake" it with the movie that pretty much doing everything against the fanbase wanted
Man shin kamen rider was the best I'm so happy I saw it in theaters. Those sure were some people who changed, people who didn't change and people who didn't want to change.
Can't deny its problems, maybe another revision to cut some fat and add more character would have been better. I think the worst offender is probably the scorpion aug sequence. Sure, it was funny, but considering the quite sudden shift of tone in the 2nd half of the movie, mayne that runtime would have been better spent on building the relationship of our main leads
I overall had fun with the film but it didn't quite hit the mark for me. It could be because I'm unfamiliar with Anno's style or maybe it just doesn't suit me personally. However it's clear that there's a lot of passion put into Shin Kamen Rider and I respect that.
Moms getting into Kamen Rider is nothing strange at all. Since the Heisei era from Kamen Rider Kyuuga the Kamen Rider series had been springboards for multiple celebrity actors launching them into mainstream fame, in other words, those Kamen Rider actors have both the looks and the acting chops - which they would have to because you can't just pick any guy to play as the lead role - so the guy not only has to look good, but also be able to protray the righousness/upholding justice side of a Kamen Rider. Now picture you are a young mother waking up every Sunday morning to supervise your 5 year old watching Kamen Rider on TV, very soon you'll be attached to the handsome actors and more than meets the eyes stories of the show. And viola, you've tapped into a demographic which you didn't knew existed before. It's like the MCU - how many women got enabled and became superhero comic movie watchers in the last decade simply due to all those handsome actors like Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth etc? HUGE amounts. That's basically what happened with Kamen Rider in the Heisei era.
Unlike Godzilla and Ultraman, I have never seen a piece of Kamen Rider media before watching Shin Kamen Rider. Judging by how well Shin Godzilla and Shin Ultraman adapted their source material, I assumed that Shin Kamen Rider would do the same in introducing me to its franchise.
@@mb2001 Evangelion reference. You know Hideaki Anno. The same guy who made the anime which referred to in this video like ten times? Or are just that baka?

Okay so i wasn't going crazy, The moment i heard Shin Kamen Rider made by Anno, I was like wait didn't he Also make Shin Godzilla? And turns out yep it the same guy. Shin has basically become his signature as in Hideaki Anno made this movie.

I just really like how weird and authentic it is. that coupled with the spectacular action and pretty good cg makes it one of the most fun movies to rewatch when I'm bored.
Great video as always. Also Man that is a bomb-ass thumbnail image
Shin Kamen Rider Is A Complex But Interesting Movie
I liked this more compared to Shin Ultraman and Shin Godzilla come close to KR
It was fun seeing anno adapted some part from the manga
Bruh, your channel is such a gift and I'm super glad I found it. Just for being so good at your job, I'mma get a scarf.
Frickin finally! 💚👍 well done mate. If i may, i'd like to request an essay on Kamen Rider Kuuga. I think its very influential on creating the future landscape of tokusatsu (more serious grounded drama, threats, and dark)
Nice video😉
I liked how you talked about Shin Kamen rider . It really was good movie for both casual and KR fans to watch
Thank you for introducing history of KAMEN RAIDER and history of KAMENRAIDER. I appreciate as a Japanese.
For real, every single shot they put in, it's awesome, I really have some tears at the end
Wild thinking that this is the SECOND Shin Kamen Rider.
Shin Kamen Rider, not to be confused with Shin Kamen Rider
Call them 1992 and 2023
I always loved Robot Detective and I'm glad he got a reference in Shin Kamen Rider.
It's not a perfect movie but it's a faithful adaptation to not only the TV show but also the manga as well.
You're back!!!!
I watched the movie a couple days ago and, while I liked it, it didn’t do much for me, someone that has little to no knowledge of kamen rider or tokusatsu in general.
I think this video helped me find the right lenses to think about it and really appreciate it. It really was a nice one to watch
oh my god ive been waiting so long for this video
Should've mentioned that there's a prequel manga, "There is No True Peace in This World -Shin Kamen Rider SHOCKER SIDE-" detailing Ichiro's rise(or rather, his fall) among the SHOCKER executive.
However, do note that you probably need to watch the movie first in order to fully appreciate the manga
RIDAAAAAAAA HENSHIN!!!!!
Favorite film of 2023. It's a movie that hasn't left my mind. Off to buy merch from it.
Where do you buy them?
This was my first introduction to the kamen rider franchise. It took me a second to calibrate to the wavelength if this movie, but once i got into it, it was a lot of fun.
It's Film that makes you Want to Perfected it!
I like the Thumbnail used a mixed of Ishinomori Shotaro and Spirits like style
It pretty much are my favorite film of 2023 despite many criticism, at first I was not interested of it because of Amazon and BLACK SUN, whom I enjoy but hated some main part in them
The ending have a very large Studio Ghibli feeling
This is what Kamen Rider should be: an unstoppable good force of nature yet have moments of weakness, Amazon and BLACK SUN have their moments, but I really don't like of them being too real
Ishinomori sensei would love this film because it really have his manga "fast paced yet tell a lot" vibe
seeing this in a small theater in ohio with other toku/rider fans was SO HYPE! it was messy yes but god do i love kamen rider so much and this film was no different!
Anno gets his mitts on Super Sentai and Gamera, and he’ll officially fill out his tokusatsu bingo card
love me some shin kamen rider analisys.
not perfect yet it'll be my favorite movie for years to come.
This movie and minus one were my favorite movies of last year
The indomitable human spirit.
even as someone who thinks the film is more than perfect, i do wish there were some more of those "human" moments as you mentioned. it's interesting to imagine what this movie could have been, but again i am so so happy with the finished product and just love this movie so much.
well, the director is well known for his unnatural ways of making humane feelings in his cinematic art
Minami Hamabe is such a good Rei
Watched it last night and I freaking LOVED it.
Can't wait for the next video!
My only complaint about this movie is the pacing. Half of the movie is happening so fast it feels like an abridged series
He tells you the "messy part" in the last 3 minutes of the vid lol
Classic TH-cam pseudo intellectual video essay moment
Its funny that no matter how much Anno may hate Evangelion and its fanbase, its success makes him unable to let it go and make different shit. Everything Anno touches has Evangelion in it, Anno liking it or not, Anno intending it or not. lol
I don't recall him disliking Evangelion but more so just tired of it
It's because Evangelion is heavily influenced by early Tokusatsu he loved(Ultraman and Kamen Rider)
I hated Evangelion but like Shin Ultraman and Shin Kamen Rider
@@miragebangbravern yeah he hated the fanbase not the series otherwise why would he decided to "remake" it with the movie that pretty much doing everything against the fanbase wanted
I love the visuals in this reboot.
I'm happy to see something a little more balanced regarding this. It feels like I enjoyed it FAR more than 99% of everyone I run into.
Watching this makes me want a Shin Gatchaman. I know it's unlikely, but I hope someone can do the series justice one day.
I loved this movie so fucking much! God I got so pumped while watching it.
I just got pumped just now thinking about it
A masterpiece.
this movie looked so unhinged i dont know what to think i gotta rewatch
ano doing the transform poses is wild
Kamen Rider's not messy.
There's clean foamy soap everywhere! 😏
I was glad to have seen both this and Shin Ultraman in theaters.
I'm glad that I'm not the only one who picked up on the Happy Science thing.
thanks for the video
imo this was better than every other Superhero movie in 2023 except for Spiderverse 2
Man shin kamen rider was the best I'm so happy I saw it in theaters. Those sure were some people who changed, people who didn't change and people who didn't want to change.
Also I still wish we that we got the rain scene instead of the tunnel scene for the shocker riders but if it wasn't working out it wasn't working out.
11:20 made me do a double check to see if I heard that right lol
This movie just hits different
I overall had fun with the film but it didn't quite hit the mark for me. It could be because I'm unfamiliar with Anno's style or maybe it just doesn't suit me personally. However it's clear that there's a lot of passion put into Shin Kamen Rider and I respect that.
Please do a video on Goranger next and talk about how it's aged and if it's worth checking out.
It's a 2 hour episode of Kamen Rider. You can say it has flaws and shit, but honestly it's a solid Encapsulation of the legacy it represents.
Best Rider Movie ever
Unlike Godzilla and Ultraman, I have never seen a piece of Kamen Rider media before watching Shin Kamen Rider. Judging by how well Shin Godzilla and Shin Ultraman adapted their source material, I assumed that Shin Kamen Rider would do the same in introducing me to its franchise.
Get in the damn motorcycle Hongo!
He's already on?
@@mb2001 Evangelion reference. You know Hideaki Anno. The same guy who made the anime which referred to in this video like ten times? Or are just that baka?
After finally watching Digimon final evo kizuna, I just realised that both of the movie having almost similar plots and the final boss being a butterfly defeated by 2 hero.
Not sure why Kamen Rider Black never gets any love. It's literally the coolest one imo.
Okay so i wasn't going crazy, The moment i heard Shin Kamen Rider made by Anno, I was like wait didn't he Also make Shin Godzilla? And turns out yep it the same guy. Shin has basically become his signature as in Hideaki Anno made this movie.
10/10 films. We need Masker World sequel asap.
Shin Kamen Rider's Hayato Ichimonji is the best film character in recent generations
