    This week we build a DIY wood slat wall! This video is focused on the detailed breakdown of the project and includes step by step instructions so you can build it yourself! This project was a ton of fun and one of my favorite projects to date! It is not as daunting as it looks, and with some patience, anyone can tackle this DIY project. The wall is built with oak slats that we ripped down on the table saw and I used MDF sheets as a backerboard for the black paint. I hope you enjoy the video!

    A tip so you are far less likely to have brad nails blowout, is to always hold your nailer perpendicular to the length of the board. In other words, the chisel tip of brad nails will veer to either side of the chisel tip, rather than up and down (due to following the grain of the wood). That is why you want to hold your brad nailer horizontal when nailing vertical boards together. It's better to have the nail veer off on the 8' length of the board, rather than on the 3/4" width of the board.

    Here is a tip. Cut out a jig block for your spacing, but make it long, 2/3, and give it feet. That way you can lean it against the wall. Then, walk away, put it next to your last stile, place the jig, nail off the next stile, place the jig and walk away. That way you do not have to pick up 3 little blocks off the floor or out of your pocket all the time.

    Just a tip for caulking. Put some soap and water in spray bottle. after you put caulk spray it and it goes off smooth with no sticking :)

    • @GoldenKeyDesign
      @GoldenKeyDesign  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great tip, but that’s more helpful for silicone caulk. This caulk was acrylic or water-based so a damp finger does the trick!

    If using oak for the slats it is best to use stainless steel nails for attaching them to the MDF. The reason is that the tannin in the oak can react with the iron in the nail and cause black streaks on the wood. The more moisture there is around, the more chance of staining (especially if you’re doing this on an external wall).

    • @GoldenKeyDesign
      @GoldenKeyDesign  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Great tip! This particular wall is inside and does not get much moisture so I haven't has any black streaks and it's been about a year

  • @timogronroos4642
    @timogronroos4642 2 ปีที่แล้ว +20

    Looks great! One small thing could be to leave just a small gap between the slats and the floor to have a moisture barrier between them.

    Just an FYI for anyone watching the MDF install. Dont rely on the floor being level, level with the ceiling and use a base to cover the gaps required on the bottom. Follow this step, no panel gaps.

    • @GoldenKeyDesign
      @GoldenKeyDesign  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thing is, I didn’t want to use a base for this project as it ruins the look. Therefore I needed the MDF to be flush with both the ceiling and floor. Best option is this case was to scribe but it’s difficult when you don’t have much room to maneuver the piece.

    Great job, I have a customer wanting this done now. I think with the price of oak here it would be about $40,000 for a 10 ft wide wall! lol

      Thanks! And yeah, that's probably a little low on the estimate haha!

    I did this around my front door outside wall, and it came out awesome! ALSO: I went with horizontal instead of vertical slats. Something different and totally pops!

      That sounds awesome! It’s a simple design but can be modified in a lot of unique ways!

      Check out the end of the video. I discuss how I plan to do that but the parts were still en route. I posted a video after this one showing the install. You can also see it in this video’s thumbnail

    Fabulous work! I do wish the light switches and outlet would be dark though. They draw too much attention to my eye. But the wall looks 👌

      We switched them out for black and brass switches! I covered the install in another video I posted a few weeks back

    Planning to do something similar but to ceiling. Also my plan was to turn the slat other way around (so that it gives more depth effect), but it will maybe 3x the need of the wood. I was hoping to constructing the sheets on ground and then connecting it as whole, but if there are any inconsistencies you are likely to see the gaps in big ceiling :(

    • @GoldenKeyDesign
      @GoldenKeyDesign  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That will look awesome! I think pre-assembling is a good idea as long as you can line them up nicely on the ceiling. And yeah definitely more wood cost but maybe find something less expensive than oak

    Good video. I admire the people who work carpentry, my father and I made 95% of the theaters in Venezuela, everything related to wood, we made the Teresa Carreño Theater, a world-renowned work, the Altamira Synagogue in Caracas, world-renowned 11 awards international as the best Synagogue there is only the one in New York because it is from that place, there are small mistakes that sometimes should not be made the MDF on the wall there was an error for not measuring in the two corners because the floor always has a unevenness and it was not taken into account that is why it did not come out square, second point when I cut an MDF or any long wood with a circular saw I must have a guide because I have a very long distance and worse even being at night mistakes that should not be made in the carpentry but above all congratulations

    using mdf is somewhat dangerous considering fire issues.
    Also, the wall not fitting, is exactly why gypsum boards is used, u install with imperfection an cover up afterwards.

    • @GoldenKeyDesign
      @GoldenKeyDesign  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Appreciate the feedback, but the whole point of using the MDF was so I could nail the slats anywhere without worrying about hitting a stud. Gypsum wouldn't achieve that
