Perfect! Totally love the effect of the light pen strokes, broken lines, etc. In my opinion, much more artistic than solid lines being used. Solved my conundrum on how to not have such a cartoon-y look with pen and wash. Thank you.
This is so lovely! I really like the pen and wash!! Thank you for explaining the process. And thanks for sharing your tips on developing a personal style.😊
Beautiful work, and your presentation style, pace, level of detail, and thoroughness are a joy to watch. I have subscribed. I’ll watch a few more before considering Patreon status, but so far odds are in your favor. 😉
Brilliant Karen for your enjoyable inspiring video as always which helps every time to create and develop our own work, thankyou for sharing your talents to encourage others. Greatly appreciated stay safe and healthy
Thank you Karen. Lots of helpful advice - good reminder about how to create depth even though the topic was pen and wash! I love pen and wash and somehow seem more disciplined with the "less is more" approach when I use it. Still struggling not to overwork when using water colour on its own. I think it's the desire to make the painting look like something that pushes me to rush, not waiting for things to dry or adding too much colour in one wash! With pen and wash, the pen outline reassures me that the painting will come together so I can relax and take my time. Still going to keep trying though!
Thank you for your wonderful comment Catherine and for sharing your experience. I love pen and wash, because it does have that element of safety! I hope you have fun painting this one... it is so much fun
Thanks Karen. The most valuable part of this demo, for me anyway, is to see from the photo just how you alter and simplify a reference to make the painting more interesting. It’s a constant obstacle for me and maybe others, to look at a photo, especially one with masses of greenery, and think where on earth do I start, and how will I represent undergrowth, shrubbery etc. In a word, simplification.
Glad it was helpful Barbara! So pleased you found this helpful, especially how I simplified the photo etc... I think lots of practice and sketching really helps. Try not to feel you need to paint everything. That's why I love the Impressionist painters... the way they simplified nature. The most important thing is to have fun! Thank you again 😊
Hi Karen! I loved this tutorial! I use pen in almost every of my watercolor illustrations - that's the way they look the best to me and you could say that is my style ;) I would love to paint more of landscapes but my favorites are fantasy art so I would probably add some misterious gateway in this forest :D :D Thank you for sharing this wonderful and inspirational work :) have a nice day! :)
Hi Karen you have nice flare for sketching.! I copied old master's, Turner Van Gogh Monal Lisa etc.. People know they from them. So copy it to learn but not the same size..and sign your name. If you copy it and its the same size and you sign their name try to sell it thats forgery! Dont copy and sign their name.. I always tell people i copied old masters to learn. Now i am learning skill tech..by you and tips on teaching which i tell my students.. So we all thank you from the states!
That is wonderful Maureen. I think you can learn so much from other artists. I hope you and your students enjoy the tips and techniques on my channel! 😊
Problem is, I think I can never draw. I enjoyed the video though, just so relaxing listening to your explanation while watching the tutorial. Thanks! 💐

Hi Mary, yes I do sell my art at local exhibitions etc... Due to covid unfortunately not so much. Hopefully I will be able to resume selling my work. Hope you are enjoying the channel :)
After one year painting I think that my one style comes out. I promised a friend painting calendulas, but I failed 😣. After three attempts it got better. I went away from natural to more artificial painting and was very happy with it. Such a pity that I can’t post it here. 🤷♀️
Hi Karen, good advice, thanks. Is your watercolour paper (pad)stretched.? Or do you use the framing for your border and stretching.I’ve been battling with gummed tape ,hard to remove from the finished work.
Hi Jenny, pleased you found this helpful. Thank you for your question. I am using a watercolour block and framing tape which is like masking tape. I don't use gummed tape anymore to stretch my paper. I will either paint smaller, get heavier paper or used paper on block, to avoid buckling. Hope this was helpful :)
Dear Karen - presents not only the technique, but especially the joy of watercolor painting - my heart is looking forward
