CHEAP AND EASY Pop Top "PAINT" RESTORE - NO POLISHING - Blown Away By The Results -

- This weeks video #notsponsored does exactly what it says on the "tin".
I'd had enough of trying to cut and polish my pop top and quotes from professionals (although I am sure they would have done a great job) didnt fit my Yorkshrie Man wallet. So I decided to tackle the job myself with a cheap and easy fix. What could possilbly go wrong haha!
So technically its not a "paint restore" its more of a cover up, but if it works, it works... I will post an update in about 6 months from 4th May 2024 and the link will be here --------------- when I have... I am keeping my fingers crossed that it lasts, but like with all of my videos, if it doesn't, you will be the first to know...
Professional bodywork folk can avert their eyes, nothing to see here haha!
Here is a link to my Amazon shop where you can find the exact product I used (and other things I have bought for the van in the past)
www.amazon.co....
Did mine this Saturday. It’s great stuff. Then ceramic coat today’s later to make it last. It will fade after 6months.
I’ve just done this and the results are impressive! Let’s hope the finish lasts a while, but even if it needs a top up in 12 months it’s not a big job 👍🏼
Hi , have a black front bumper and was looking at this product , can you see brush strokes on bumper? Keep up the good work great vids
Hi there! I’m about to follow your guidance on repainting the pop top; can you please give an update on how well it’s lasting? 👍🏽👍🏽👌🏽👌🏽
@hughblackman99 hey matey, it's still looking great, not as super shiny as day one but it's still looking fab. I reckon a re coat every 4 months for me and it should keep it looking fresh :)
How has the product been on the bumpers? Lasted so far?
Absolutely perfect timing, my pop has gone so faded, just like yours Col, so this video was absolutely therapeutic to me, can't wait to try it
Its Saturday morning and its bloody raining bang goes putting the new rubber wind reflector on for the pop top on well it saves the neighbor's listening to lamb of god 😂
Who doesn’t like a shiny bumper pal good work!
Col, did u wipe it off after you brushed it on and left for a bit? Or did u just leave it to dry??
Not on the pop top, I did on the bumpers though bud
As a project manager, I need to report this to the HSE for improper use of stepladders 😂 But as a fellow metalhead, I hereby sentence you to 30 days of Pantera!
He'll yes
How many coats did you do? Looks great!
@jameshughes8543 just the one coat bud :)
Aye up, after you put Polytrol on poptop, did you have to wipe excess off after? Are you still happy with it? Cheers Bud 🤙
@evobobber no mate, but before doing anything it's probably best to wait until my 6 month update just in case :)
Nooooo, just bought a tin. A gent i work with did his before your vid, and loves it. He didnt clean poptop much and it is a mess. It'll be fine. Cheers Bud. 🤙
I've just tried this. My advice is......be very careful. Try a patch first and see how it "bonds". It just wouldn't adhere at all on mine.....yes I did clean it. It's not quite dry but at the mo, it looks a mess close up. Use with caution.
Thanks for the wonderful video, the product looks great and we will likely use it on our van. Can I just ask, the green paint in your kitchen, what colour is it?
My poptop faded. Went back to the company and fair play to Skyline Roofs, they were fab and rectified it. However, when it goes again, I'm doing this. Amazing
Tbh looked good. Need to let us know if it fades/how long it lasts after a month with the British weather. Nothing I’ve tried lasts.
Back to black is 💩, better rubbing a black pudding on your van bumpers, last seconds in the rain. I do fancy this for our back bumper, but will wait and see your later review on the product.
🍺beer time.
Why didn’t you try this three years ago and save me hours of hard work with a polishing mop?
Looking forward to seeing the update before I splash out on a tin.
(Married a Yorkshire Lass, it’s rubbing off on me)
Oooooooo, I'm gonna try this on mine. I cut and polished it a couple of months ago but it's gone manky again....cheers dude 😎
This is how my pop top went. I assumed it was something to do with a cleaning product I'd used, maybe not getting everything off when I'd parked under trees, or possibly UV damage. I polished it up, and it was the same again after a month or so. Might have to be giving this a go!
I've done this a few times over the years, it won't last that long this was my experience with it anyway , my austop roof only came with a gel coat applied, I eventually got the roof resprayed this year
This looks super interesting - but I will wait for your one year review, if it looks like shattered yacht varnish I will pass on it, if it looks decent, i will give it a go.
Interesting video - lovely stroke action 😉 - I’ve made a note of the product and will wait and see how it weathers, loved your jingle ☺️
Thanks for this one Colin, Just bought some of this, now waiting for a good day to do it.
Oh fabulous, just ordered this myself, thanks for the tip x
How much do I need for my poptop 500ml or litre.
Smallest tin will do I only used about 1/4 of it
Great thanks . Just been and bought a tin on special offer as well. 15% off. Will let you know how I get on.
Spot on mate my roof has gone dull had no idea what to do will give it a go and shiny bumper's rule😂
Can't believe you didn't do the side steps 🤣 or tyres
Side steps.... GENIUS IDEA! I'll be doing that!
It does say on the tin not to coat tyres or rubber as it might stiffen up and crack ooo err! (That's what she said 🤣) - so I'll be cautious and leave the tyres for now! I was tempted though 🤣
Ah ok.....I won't be doing tyres then 😂@@Yorkshirepoptopadventures
I thought my pop top was fine after watching this another thing to do thanks 🙉
That jingle made my day!😂😂 “it’s mint!”
Colin, just wondering, as (like me) you are hot on taking care of your T6, have you ever considered undersealing? It's about £500 so not cheap but I wondered if it was only really worth doing on older vehicles. Be interested to know your thoughts. Cheers.
Hey, I've thought about it, then saw how expensive it was and then stopped thinking about it 🤣🤣
Great vid, as usual Col. Tell me where to download the 'Properly mint' song - so that I can give it a wide berth 🤪(only kidding, I'm still singing it, I think my daughters will rock out to it too!). 🤣💃💃💃
Out on iTunes now 🤣🤣🤣
I used this on my poptop several years ago and it flaked off after 6 months…the whole lot just peeled bad., maybe i didn’t clean it properly to start with. Ive just (today) ordered some Rustoleum all surface paint to see if that is any better, i will try on a small patch first
Hopefully it won't but I'll update in a few months and again in a year to see how it's fairing :)
Really interested to see how well it lasts on the bumpers👍
Hi Colin, question have you ever proofed your pop top canvass ?? Regards Paul 😊
Yes matey, I do it yearly with spray on Fabsil :)
I notice you have 2 solar panels, does it make much of a difference? I'm finding just the one panel on my T6 pop top pretty useless tbh.
Yeah it does, I only had one before and now (even on dull days) it's pretty good at topping up the battery :)
You Colin, are bloody brilliant 😂
Did you wipe off excess ? How long did you leave it on for ? Thank you
Hey I just painted it on and left it (but spread it out thin. Took about 20 minutes for it to go tack dry and then 24hrs to fully dry
Wow, pop top looks amazing.
Hey Col, loving your videos buddy. Newly Joined the VW Van Life tour. Loving it.
Question regarding the product you are using. As my poptop is Blue, can you use the Polytrol on any colour to bring back the shine?
Thanks in advance pal.
Hey buddy,
Welcome on board... as far as I am aware, it should be ok on a blue pop top too.. its a clear coat.
But like with everything I do, do it at your own risk 🤣🤣
Ahh brilliant news. Yeah totally understandable buddy. Thanks for the advice 🙏
Well, that was like watching paint dry! 😂 only joking 😘
🤣🤣🤣
What a transformation!!!
Great job on the pop top Col 👍🏻
Great work 👌🏻
How is it holding up mate I just bought some to do on an old ducato van
So far so good, but it's only been a week or so
Thats class
Ooooh, shiny!
Looks awesome is the paint clear or black.
Thank you, it's clear matey
Bought 😊👍🏼
Hi, what does it look like now and is it worth doing this ??
Hey buddy, I only did it last week, still looks great. I'll update in a few months ;)
My Polytrol arrived today after seeing the post on Dubbed out. FB Looking forward to a shiny roof again.
Why didnt you wipe off like it advises? Would that leave a matt finish do you think?!?
I'm not sure about the finish if wiped back off, but I thought the roof couldn't get any worse than it was 🤣🤣 so I slapped it on and painted it to within an inch of its life 🤣🤣 still looks good ;)
@@Yorkshirepoptopadventures Sound good to me pal. I'll follow your method 😁
Eh up Col have you had the T's nicked off the back of ya van??
Haha they dropped off about 2 years ago 🤣🤣!
@@Yorkshirepoptopadventures haha thought an Audi TT owner has had them!!
Cheers for the credit dude! Dan.
No problems buddy, thanks for the idea :)
I’m just about to order a tin of this, how’s it holding up?
Hey bud, its only been just over a week since I did it, it's still looking great. I'll do an update in a few months
@@Yorkshirepoptopadventures ah right okay no problem, I used some meguires 3 in 1 marine gel coat restorer with a machine polisher about 6 months ago and it came up great but was back to its normal faded finish after a few weeks.
For the price and ease of application on this I’ll give it a go rather than wait for the update. Thanks for getting in touch
What size tin did you get Col?
0.5L matey :)
Cheers
Ladder 🙄 turn round, lovely happy content 🫡
MINT 💙💛🤍
