Jenny is definitely relatable, the look on her face when you said "but you're from the British isles" was a facial expression all us irish can relate to when someone says that,
Jennys reaction was priceless, "there's only a part of it stuck to us" that's brilliant.

@GPZ Fan I'm Irish and I agree with you, the island of ireland is one of the British Isles as named by the Romans, just as Iberia and Scandinavia are geographical locations in which different nations exists, most Irish people including myself just have this in-built involuntary reaction to say "we're not British", it's just one of those weird things that gets past down the generations, it always makes me laugh to see this very Irish reaction, whether it's jenny may finn, Phil lynott, or Bono. Although I think most Irish people are happy enough for Britain to claim Bono, we're kinda sick of listening to him.

@@j_freed Everyone in Northern Europe - if you go back far enough - has relatives from everywhere in Europe, North Africa, Russia & Asia. This is basic knowledge, and is why we don't carp on attempting to claim "heritage"; we know we're a mixture of hundreds and thousands of years of migration. You're not Irish. You're not part-Viking. You're an American.

G’day Justin, Rikki from Australia here. The fact that you have this channel on TH-cam and communicate with the fans who enjoy your bands music makes you relatable all on it’s own. We couldn’t do this in the 80s, and having contact with someone of your calibre brings the mystique of a famous person a little bit more down to earth. I absolutely love hearing your opinions, your thoughts and your gripes with the music industry. It makes me enjoy your music, and the human all the more. Thanks.🤘

I’ve only got 45 minutes into this, but Jenny May Finn you have the patience of a saint! That “Yes, finally!” at 40:16 was *incredibly* relatable! It was driving me crazy how Justin was just not getting it at all! And his fixation on bin bags, compost heaps and laundry would have been really infuriating if it wasn’t so ridiculously funny. With only 35 minutes left to watch, I wonder if Justin will actually get around to answering your question? Can’t say I’m optimistic… 😂😂😂

This was a brilliant episode. Congratulations as always Jenny May and Justin for your fab work. So much to unpack in each episode! I would consider Justin relatable, especially because of your TH-cam channel. Your personality definitely speaks to the 'everyman' who has an interest in music and learning and passion for creativity. Onstage, I would suggest aspirational, you're definitely awe inspiring to watch on stage. All energy and connection with the crowd, primal rawness as well as glam (What a combo!). I think that pseudo relationship thing that Jenny was talking about is real as well! In so far as not knowing someone and mourning them, i.e Diana. I remember I cried like a baby when Bowie died and he was not what I would consider relatable at all, defniitely aspirational or mythical. When he passed I remember people saying things like his music gave them permission to be weird, which I liked and related to. Listening to this podcast, while cooking breakfast, making the bed and doing the washing up was a weird irony. Justin, please empty my compost and do the laundry! I bloody hate doing it - all of it. I do love me some clean sheets and the smell of clean clothes though, but f*ck housework, damnit! Long comment, sorry. Great show again and I look forward to the Ren ep (and other vids in between!). x Also, the J-LO thing is probably down to 'tall poppy syndrome'. We have that in Oz is that a thing everywhere? When we celebrate someone on their rise to the top and then cut them down when they get too big for their boots. It's weird and stupid, but definitely a big thing here in Oz...

I’d say relatable is someone I can look at and think “I can do that!” and aspirational is someone I look at and think “I’d love to do that and I will try my damn hardest!” and then there’s arrogant which I think is displayed through a lack of self awareness and gratitude!

Stephen Tyler was relatable in person. Friendly, engaging, generous with his attention. He seemed interested in whether he had met you before or what you did for a living, etc. When it came to the performance on stage, he was absolutely non-relatable because he was absolutely amazing. After the show, he was again relatable. He was 45 when I met him and he was less than reticent about things like only being able to back-flip across the stage once. LOL I couldn't tell if he was counting his lucky stars or disappointed in himself. I was in awe so I said as little as possible, except to tell him that Janie's Got a Gun is a true classic that will stand as a testament to the band's ability to write a truly great song. He appreciated my saying it. At least that's what he said...

The guy who said 'hey I like the podcast' - that's the way a fan should behave. Short, sweet, non-intrusive, not interrupting when you are in conversation with someone else. Just the "I appreciate what you do" is all that's needed. I've never asked a celebrity for a photo, an autograph, any of that nonsense. Anything above the "thanks dude for your contributions" is intrusive. It's called good manners, proper etiquette, being raised right (as we say in the south). In fact, Elton John lived in Atlanta, where I've lived most of my life, and made the comment that he liked living here because people left him alone. It's a shame "celebrities" feel they have to be sheltered away because of intrusive fans.

I think on some level fans expect artists to continue to express and model behaviours that reflect their own experiences despite being able to afford quite a different lifestyle. The evolution of social media has eroded the kind of mystique you mentioned, Justin.

Loved listenting to you both, I'm one of the older 50+ generation who watch your posts regularly. I don't think we'd expect anything less of JLo it's part of her celebrity identitiy, in fact I barely give her life or music a thought. It's interesting that you think people who watch you don't watch I'm a Celebrity - I like to think my viewing interests are well rounded as well as my musical likes . I enjoyed your chat with Rick Beato who I also watch regularly and I can't wait for you to interview Ren next time! RELATABLE 😍

I think there is a time and place for everything. If someone famous is eating, talking or with their family you shouldn’t bother them. Growing up in Los Angeles you run into a lot of people. My mom always said “they aren’t working - don’t bother them on their time off”. And it’s always stuck with me.

I've got some friends who are really clever, some are musical, some are artists. A few even have a bit of a following in their field and could be termed as being a bit 'known'. But I don't see them as aspirational as they are my peers, I know what they did when they were young/at their worst/most boring. There are many well known/famous/godlike artists and musicians who I adore/feel protective of/would love to kiss/be kissed by etc etc. But I am really happy that they are living in an imagined reality well away from me, where they seem to be creative and free and able to express themselves without being told off too often or seem too much like the pub bore or needy neighbour. Saying that, I do like to try and find out the person behind the creativity, but it is still very removed from 'bin work' or laundry concerns. I think if they came down to my level (ie. were a friend/acquaintance/peer etc etc, the aspirational magic would disappear. So, I love my heroes to be aspirational I guess.

I think perhaps that when people get mad when hearing about someone who doesn't take out their own bin, it is more of a reflection of their own feelings of inadequacy, like "You think you're better than me because you don't take our your bins?"

    • @NinStardust
      @NinStardust ปีที่แล้ว

I think you’re right, but why do celebs feel the need to put it out there in the first place? J-Lo for example is clearly flaunting her wealth and privilege & James Hetfield can hardly be surprised that the average person isn’t welling up with tears of pity at the fact that he has to leave his multi million dollar mansion for 5 minutes once a week to put out the bins. I think both were trying to appear relatable but it backfired and caused resentment instead. Perhaps sometimes it’s better to remain private and aspirational than rub people up the wrong way by ignorantly attempting to be relatable. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I loved the episode, "Justin Hawkins and Jenny May Finn ride together again". This conversations are really inspirational and funny.
But i have been a little confused about the meaning of being aspirational or relatable. Not in a linguistic way. I mean that i have always related being aspirational with goals or dreams, and the way we consider the celebrities or artists represent them. And being relatable with the way this people look like human being.
But in your conversation i have noticed a trend to relate it with the economic status. Of course that being rich, to have a way of life which drives an artist to become a celebrity separate this people from the human being reallity. I listened once to an artist to tell that when he became famous he dehumanized in a part.
But in the episode of today, i agree more with Justin's conclusion. As well being relatable currently is a trending topic, so is a way to sell a way of life which sometimes is unreal. And most of celebrities who earn money enough to pay luxury, develope a kind of luxury way of life, as well a simply rich person who isn't even famous.
I think, Justin, you look like relatable person, even you could be aspirational, but because to me they aren't opposite values... Now that i think... It's a little of Jenny's conclusion too...
    Well, congrats, good team!
(I will avoid to sit down in your table if i someday find to you having a dinner with some woman or man 😂😅)

Good debate. For what it's worth I think people don't like it when folks think they are superior. Thinking they're better than the rest of us and certain tasks are beneath them. If we're honest we all enjoy to take people like that down a peg and plant their feet back on the ground. Aspiration for me is more about wanting to be like or do something similar. You guys are relatable because you have your feet on the ground. I don't mind that James Hetfield hates taking his bins out. I don't like it either but we still do it. That's relatable. If he said I'm not doing that It's beneath me. That's arrogance and deserves to be called out. If you tell me you don't have time to cook for yourself 'cos you're busy and don't have the time. That's not a problem, I can relate to that. I aspire to be able to pay someone to cook for me. Is it not the same as the old "Do you know who I am" statement that is guaranteed to wind up everyone in the vicinity?

I found out today from someone I know that used to drive for metallica that James actually IS the type of person to put his own bins out... I had to ask him, pretty sure he thought it was the most random question going until I explained why I asked 😂😂😂 way to look nuts

I met Chris Evans on a train into Waterloo one morning many years ago on My way to work he wasn’t in first class, not in fancy clothes or anything else to say he was a celebrity I said morning Chris and he replied good morning I didn’t snap his picture or ask him stupid questions a really nice down to earth man. He owns the most expensive Ferrari sold at auction but every year he lets sick and disadvantaged children go out in his car collection for free. Relatable, he had addiction issues but spoke about them and freely admitted to them and dealt with them. I have met other celebrities on the train some off whom’s arrogance is absolutely disgusting abusing staff and other passengers demanding what they believe to be their rights due to their self belief of rank.
Justin great channel I come firmly from the eighties era when all rockstars had to have a mansion, helicopter and a pool to wash The rolls Royce in 😂

I think the difference between relatable and aspirational isn’t a difference at all. Your aspirational appeal is what you’ve achieved and relatability is whether you still recognize where you came from and recognizing the mechanisms that allowed you to become aspirational.
Taking the garbage out is a normal mundane task that if we could all afford someone to take care of it we probably would (or at least have the choice). An un-relatable person wouldn’t understand how much garbage there really is, and doesn’t care to know the details as long as they don’t see it.
This is why affluent children are so detached, because they haven’t known any different.
Oh, and regarding the guest… I like this one, have her back!

I wonder what your opinion is of having tribute bands of your band out there, do you welcome it? or do you feel it encroaches on your band's brand and image in a negative way?
