I knew Ren growing up when we were very young and I can say with great confidence he is exactly who he says he is, I think that is a factor why his music is doing so well. Not only is his music fantastic he is 110% himself, no smoke and mirrors and that is what makes him so relatable. He is and is going to go down as one of the great singer songwriters from the UK. I love his music and so does my 6 year old, and he found him on his own not through me showing him. Very proud to see someone who grew up were we did in the middle of nowhere become what he has. Your the man Ren!

Yeah my five year old is also as in love with REN’s art as I. She really takes in the words and explains her interpretations to me, especially about money, she blew my mind telling me “Mummy REN is saying some people have lots of money like daddy, and they might not be very nice, and some people have not much money like you, and that’s not fair, people should share more”. A beautiful, innocent child’s interpretation of RENs words. He can reach the heart of a child and mother equally. She always asks me if he is still poorly too. I hope REN knows how many hearts he touches and he even has 5 year olds checking on his health journey.

My theory: Ren’s is so attractive to people nowadays because he is delivering something we all crave whether we realize it or not: authenticity. In a world of fake sh*t everywhere and 24/hrs a day (courtesy the net) - brutal, honest authenticity is an antidote the audience wants. Ren is real.

I can identify with Ren's brain and I'm a 60 year old woman. I could never be put in a box either. I wanted to do everything and had a brain that was both very creative & very inquisitive. Never diagnosed with ADHD but sounds about right. lol. Where I did always feel most at peace with myself is in music & nature. Two things that I always say set the human spirit free. Ren reminds me of someone like Van Gogh or Davinci. He is an artist in every sense of the word and born to do exactly what he is doing. He connects to people of ALL ages because he expresses a truth about the human condition that we all can relate to. No one gets through this life pain free. Ren is a rare gem in the music industry, and his message is needed!

After getting COVID 1.5 years ago I have been suffering daily from ME/CFS. At the age of 26 it has flipped my entire life upside down. I feel like nobody wants to hear about it and it has been a very lonely journey for me. It really meant a lot to me when I discovered one of my favourite artists suffers from similar daily struggles and is very vocal about it.
I don't think people realize how devastating this is on both body and mind. Quality of life is significantly reduced but nobody around you can see the suffering. Most people think im just "stressed" or "tired". Having a person with a following openly validate and acknowledge it is much appreciated.
I even reached out to Ren on one of his Music videos to ask him something about his illness and he was kind enough to take the time to respond.

About 3/4 in when answering the question about why people are drawn to your music. I think a big component is the vulnerability you make public, you are so personable and genuine in your communication through music that your fans build a bond through that vulnerability. They get to know you in a deeper sense as the outlet of all your termoile, but in return that makes them feel safe enough to reciprocate and share their stories with you. I think its a social contruct similar to the mirror neuron, people are seeing you bear your pain out in the open. They see that courage and they respect the sharing of that vulnerability, and that ends up a) why you get so many intense meet and greets, b) how so many people can become so deeply connected to you that all of the sudden every piece you have ever made is listened to and part of the shared journey.

It's funny that this video came out 10 months ago, but now it shows up in my algorithm after I recently discovered "Hi Ren." It's incredible to me to hear Ren basically confirm the feelings I get from that song. I have listened to it once a day since I first heard it. And what's weirder is, I went through something similar, yet different. In elementary school, I almost off-ed myself. And I told myself that if high school wound up worse than that, I would eventually go through with it... I had resigned myself to never living past 18yo. High School wound up being the best time of my life. I met my wife there. We have 3 kids and a quaint home near our family, so I am eternally grateful that I didn't... but it does leave me without answers in life, at my current age. I'm actually the same age as Ren (33-34). I never imagined what life would look like at this age. Ever. So, it's uncharted territory. It's exciting, sure, but it's also anxiety inducing. It's like taking the most difficult test in the world with absolutely no prep... Or, the easiest test in the world, but in a language you can't comprehend...

Same. It took my a long time to find formal words to call it but I was 10 the first time I realized thoughts of the later issue were not standard. The way he described a pendulum constantly swaying / an eternal dance at the end of Hi Ren really spoke for me as I have said something like that, though not so eloquently, many times years after I found the words to call it. Big difference is, when I first noted not a fight to win, I found it daunting to consider I would dance for the rest of my days in exhaustion. In time I did learn the dance but still felt that despair at the prospect. How he positioned it in that monologue shifted my mindset for the first time in (when do we start the clock?) years. I've done a lot of work to learn the dance but what his example did to shift my mindset is immeasurable by comparison.

Ren, I’m a songwriter just coming into my own at age “61.” I put off my music passion for years, by chasing money, and my career. I spent 22 years as a school counselor, so your Hi Ren video resonated with me on multiple levels. I had an empathetic response and connective reaction to your craft. I love creating music. I’ve shared your video with friends…some who just don’t get it. I do. It’s interesting about feeling you need to make it before age 30. Hopefully I’ll break that stereotype. Love your stuff!

    • @3dChris
      @3dChris ปีที่แล้ว +20

Jim, I just wanted to chime in here. I think too many people talk themselves out of chasing their dreams because of the stigma of age. Someone who has avoided chasing their dreams for years or decades is also likely to adopt the false narrative of "being past their time" as it sadly gives them an excuse accepted by society for why they shouldn't try. I think more than anything, that is probably why it might not be seen as much. So the false narrative becomes perpetual. Bravo to you for rejecting that excuse. Stay positive in your dialogue with yourself. Self encouragement is often the secret sauce that separates those that push through, and those that dont. And I think the interview we just watched confirms the value, level of impact, and the real need for authenticity. Be you in all your glory. People are starved for authenticity. When someone like Ren comes along and is transparent in their craft, and boldly vulnerable, it ignites something in people that attracts them and draws them in. They notice something authentic, something relatable. And they feel driven to explore the source of that authenticity, not only to learn more about the artist or individual, but to learn more about themselves. Write for yourself. Create what you feel in your heart. I wish you the best of luck. The universe is cheering you on. Never forget that.

Elizabeth of the “Charismatic Voice”, a classically trained professional opera singer, and a lover of all kinds of singing voices, had said something about Ren’s classical guitar style. She said that it was classical in form and structure, whether he was aware of it or not. As a visual artist myself, the discussion of the artist’s intention fascinates me. It's even more prevalent in music where the listener brings their own meanings and emotions to the song. Or, what makes a composition classical? This a great interview. It was once explained to me that true creatives are like a modern, fly by wire fighter jet. Those are actually intentionally designed to be unstable - and are almost impossible to fly without computer assistance. The performance advantage comes from learning to harness and use that instability to make the aircraft do things that a “normal” aircraft can’t. I see creative people like Ren exactly the same - they don’t have the same mental processes as me - but they have learned to harness and use their own mental processes and that makes them so much more creative - because they can generate and move between so many ideas so much quicker…?

Justin thank you soooo much for doing this interview. And also thank you Ren for giving your time. This was an amazing interview. I knew Ren came from Wales but I didn't realize just how small of a community he lived in. Just goes to show exactly how driven he is and I'm here for that. Best artist in the world in my eyes right now and the best is still yet to come. We all know it.

@@johnsearing9736 I'm just halfway through this video and man does my heart go out him hearing about his illness and psychosis. I knew he'd been through some hardship but my god I'd no idea how bad he had it. He really is inspirational, to know he's gone through so much and still has blessed us with this unparalleled level of talent is beyond amazing. Like you said, a generational talent. The more youth that hear this man's story the better, it's the type of motivation a lot of people need to be exposed to. Including myself, it's really after putting some things in perspective for me.

This was really well done. One thing I appreciate is that you let the guest answer the questions without interrupting. So many people doing interviews on youtube or podcasts seem more interested in hearing themselves speak. It was great hearing Ren explain his backstory because he is right, people tend to fill in the gaps with guesses instead of the facts. I'm glad he was able to tell it and I'm glad you gave him an opportunity to. Keep up the good work.

At around 20:25 when Ren starts talking about “seeing patterns” when he plays that’s such a neuro divergent trait that a lot of us have. It’s like a cool superpower thing especially when you recognize it and gain the ability to use it. Whether it’s ADHD, Autism or any other ND thing.
For me at first it was all gobbledygook until the pieces started to click together like a giant jigsaw puzzle. Add the hyper focus and you begin to see how a lot of us are musicians, actors, dancers and emergency medical providers. We see things most don’t.
Love the interview it was like two new friends getting to know each other and those are the best kind.❤

My theory about why people let negative comments or attitudes affect them more than positive ones is that humans have evolved to respond to threat. We simply pay more attention to aggression than kindness out of self-preservation. IMHO, anyway.

What draws people to Ren is the absolute authenticity of his art. It's real, unapologetic, raw...in a world filled with performances, his art is decidedly raw truth, his truth sure, but there is empowerment in that.

Justin, thanks for interviewing Ren. You and he are amazing. Ren's words just tumble out of him, like he's in a hurry to say what he needs to say before he can say no more. He's intelligent, and has a very busy mind, which bodes well for us fans of Bardcore. I have Multiple Sclerosis, an auto-immune disease, so I understand the whole brain fog, pain and fatigue thing all too well. It makes me admire Ren all the more because those three symptoms(let alone the others)can make it difficult to have any sort of normal life. Yet, you could look at us and have no idea of the shit we wade through every day. So, if there is a god, please bless Ren and everyone else who lives with a chronic illness. And everybody reading this, too.

This was riveting,Justin. Your interview technique allowed us to hear REN’s story in a really raw way. Maybe it’s the mom in me ,but I feel protective of this gentle genius. I hope he doesn’t allow himself to put the mental health struggles of the people who have found solace in his lyrics on his shoulders. I hope he can continue to draw boundaries with people who are facing a struggle. I’m happy his brilliant music has helped so many, but it seems so heavy to be held up as the voice for those who suffer. I don’t want to minimize his strength in any way, I just hope he can continue to separate himself from others mental heath journeys. That seems so daunting.
