It's very much implied the combine we see in the game are a minuscule fraction of the forces deployed in the initial conquest. In fact, we fight mostly transhuman soldiers that only came to be after earth was already conquered. The main army that won the war probably was redirected to fight other wars elsewhere.

This led to various deals being brokered between different Cave Johnson', and even a "War" between some for Research Rich Multiverse. We also know that there are "Evil" Cave Johnsons... although what that means exactly given our "Non-Evil" Cave certainly wasn't exactly bound by "Ethics" provided it was in the name of Science. And I think this is where the Combine come in... a theory I have is that the Combine _are_ a conglomerate of "Evil" Johnsons., who don't care about other Verses; only acquiring more resources for their own. This also makes some sense; I mean consider how similar Aperture Science and Combine Technology are. Of course Combine Technology appears to be much more crude, relying on bio-mechanics of the various native fauna that they discover to resolve the short-fall of the technical limitations they have... and this is potentially because while they are scavenging technology from their multiverse counterparts., they're not exactly keeping the Scientists who helped develop it alive to explain how it's supposed to work. It could be that GlaDOS is so good at keeping the combine back because., well they're just an inferior version of what she's created in the Aperture Facility. I mean it's just a thought... but it would arguably be a bit poetic if the Combine and "Employers" were Aperture and Black Mesa from other Verses.
Citadel strongly implies that Aperture fell or GLaDOS made some kind of a deal with Combine, structure is powered by cores we know from Aperture Science and there are floating platforms of the same design. Not saying it happened, only suggesting.
The implicit subtext of the 7 hour war was that politicians surrendered preemptively and sold out humanity instead of leading properly. (Their technology isn't particularly much more advanced and the destruction wasn't that destructive.) It's probably how it would go down in reality. Most political and government leaders are self-serving sociopaths who are only in it for control/influence.
One thing I've noticed is that Judith is holding a grudge that she was meant to be the one in the test chamber that day. What kind of logic is that to hold grudge against? I wouldn't hold a grudge that someone took my spot on the plane. And then that plane fell down. Because Judith definitely wouldn't have survived Black Mesa incident.
My guess is she thought Gordon did something wrong and that's why the resonance cascade happened, so she thinks that if she was there she could have done a better job. Just a theory tho

Judith badly wanted a job that Gordon got, and not long after he got it the world turned upside-down and any future opportunity to get one like it evaporated. And as far as anyone on the outside knew, that might have been Gordon's fault. That would be enough to make anyone mad, even if they couldn't have done a thing about it. Two, the person who tells you about this grudge is Alyx, who has a grudge of her own against Judith. So it's very unreliable information to begin with, and almost certainly exaggerated.

I can't see Alyx shooting Judith after all that, no less over an argument. She's hot-headed and protective of her dad and his wishes but after Judith proved herself to have done everything to play the combine for the good of the resistance, Alyx would surely be suspicious but hardly to the point of killing her. I can see her punching her in the mouth over the dispute about her dad's final wishes but she's no lunatic
I've always liked Judith Mossman and I've always looked forward to discussion on this complex but ultimately heroic character. I really hope, if or when Episode 3 actually happens, that the Borealis is not destroyed. I think Eli and Alyx misunderstood the G-man's "Prepare For Unforeseen Consequences" message. I think Dr Kleiner and Dr Mossman are correct in that the technology on board the Borealis could not only defeat the Combine by sending them along with the nasty Leeches, Barnacles, Antlions, Headcrabs, Zombies and other hostile alien life off world, it could even recover the lost Earth water and species which ended up on Xen. Because of all this potential, I believe Dr Mossman ultimately worked for the good of all humanity and Earth itself. However if Alyx and Gordon foolishly destroy the Borealis all that would be lost and potentially the destruction of powerful teleportation technology could even reestablish an open Super Portal to the Combine Otherworld and Dr Mossman's work would have all been in vain.

This could mean that there was an exchange of at least aquatic lifeforms between Earth and the Xen borderworld. Since the Earth's oceans are now low and full of "Xen Leeches" as seen in the Highway 17, Sandtraps and Lost Coast maps, it's possible some former Earth aquatic life could be living in oceans in the Xen borderworld if it was transported in the drained Earth water. However any Earth aquatic life that wasn't teleported appears to have been devoured by the leeches. Those things have somehow evolved on Earth to become so vicious that there doesn't even seem to be other powerful Xen aquatic lifeforms let alone weak ones like barnacles, bullsquids and headcrabs in the Earth's oceans although some ichthyosaurs appeared to have survived the leech explosion.
judith is very clever. it seems like getting eli, alyx, and gordon to breen was her plan all along. she was waiting for her time to strike, when she stops breen from transporting them to the portal and calling in guards, she then tells him "we're doing what i could never do alone; we're STOPPING you". she definitely was very well aware of what both alyx and gordon are capable of, especially together, and knew they could stop breen from escaping earth.
During my playthrough, I admired Mossman. Kinda don't know why maybe through because of her appearance and voice. She really left a nice impression on me.
technically, in-universe teleportation had been discovered decades ago in aperture science, without the use of xen as a middleman all this fight occurred while the technology the combine were searching was buried countless feet underground, being perpetually tested into perfection purely for the sake of an empty concept of "science" yes i watched leadhead's video

I just finished HL2 VR. At the end where you are being transported by Judith to Breen, she says "Until you're where he wants you, its no use." In my head it made it seem like she too is working under G-Man's guidance.
when gordan gets teleported into the office its because judith was already using the teleporter to get there to share info, the locatoon was stored in the memory of the teleporter

Judith, in all honesty, made the biggest move she probably never intended to do but enacted on anyway. She practically did something that the entire resistance would say no to simply because it could go wrong.

My personal theory is that Lamar actually saved Gordon. Judith knew Gordon was making his way to Kleiners lab, as Barney contaced Kleiner, Kleiner likely contacted Eli, and thereby Judith. And so I think Judith played a part in Alyx getting through the teleporter just fine, but when it came to Gordons turn. I believe Judith had tampered with the teleportation destionation of Gordon, trying to deliver him to Breen already at the beginning of the game. Gordon could go anywhere on earth, as shown. But somehow, one of his locations were right into Dr. Breens office. I think this was his intended destination, plotted by Judith. But due to Lamar messing up the teleporter, Gordon ended up circling back to outside Kleiners lab.
Haha, this makes sence. It was that stupid creature that Dr. Kleiner loves so much! Part that Judith may have fiddled with teleporter occured in my mind during wathing this video.
Judith's plotline never made sense to me. It's so convoluted and I still can't tell if she was a double agent or just realized she messed up and changed her mind. The scene where they outsmart Breene in the end of HL2 drives me crazy. The idea of someone as intelligent as him locking himself in a room with three of his greatest enemies (and Judith who is obviously second-guessing everything he does) with no guards is ridiculous.
@@marcoboscarol2420 I'm talking about how he was alone with them and chose to leave the guards outside. That was when he was still in control and I thought it was too convenient for the plot.
he has the guards leave because the next thing he discloses is that he now holds the Combine in a checkmate, having Eli (superior teleportation innovator) and Gordon as leverage, while also implying he's aware of the Gman. He doesn't want his superiors or overwatch snitches to hear his proposition. He still thinks he's "negotiating" with the Combine, likely with Judith as an accomplice. Judith may have been waiting to see if Breen was going to decide to keep the Vance's alive or kill them, which may have hastened her to pick that moment to make her move. However, I think the only thing that would make Judith make sense in the HL universe as a whole, is if she was secretly an ex Aperture Science asset (after Gordon snatched her BM job)...because how else would she know so much about the most top secret projects in Aperture's inner workings, like the Borealis and its utility and design? It's also unclear to me who her Borealis videocall to the Citadel was meant for, since went after the Borealis alone behind Eli's back.

I think one of the following lore videos should be about Russell. The man simply was one of my favourites from the franchise so far and he is definitely crucial part of the resistance. Also maybe some lore videos about enemies in HL:A? The electrifying dog or w/e it was that Alyx fought against definitely an interesting creature. Reminds me somewhat of the Houndeyes from the first HL but it definitely had greater abilities.

I really like how these lore videos humanize everyone. Characters in good stories don't just do things out of pure malice; there's always a reason for things. I have always disliked Judith, even after she "redeemed herself" by turning on Breen. But this gave me just enough extra insight to where I can see why she did what she did. Although I still dislike her, it's given me a better perspective.
Progress word on her bracelet makes perfect sence. She is truly character of greatness. Its like she "carry" weight of the resistance progress toward victory on her shoulders. Thanks for sharing such a detail. You are genius. :) Love your lore videos about HL/Portal Multiverse.
I will be honest. The first time that I learned that Mossman was a spy for the Combine when playing through Half-Life 2 for the time....I wanted to deck her.
Speaking of Judith and Epistle 3, my personal headcanon is that Epistle 3 would have been the original timeline, aka the timeline that would have happened if Alyx had not made the deal with Gman to save her father. Will we still arrive to the Borealis in this new timeline? Who knows. At least if we do, it'll look prettier than it did in Source
IMO there is one major flaw in judith story: at the end of hl2 she is at the citadel and in the beginning of episode 1 we already see her being in the arctic and having found the codes. how could she get there so fast and already have results within hours? how much time has really passed between the end of hl2 and the beginning of episode 1? it could only be explained if gordon and alyx were in this stasis state of gman for a couple days before being freed by the vortigaunts..
that is something I also always had a problem with and tried to explain it with a portal in the citadel that goes directly to white forest and from there she takes off... take a day, which is somewhat how long Gordon and Alyx take in EP 1, maybe a little more and within a day she could have made it into the arctic. although barely, timewise, if she also took the chopper route. I think a portal to arctic is more plausible. Now the chopper route, that Alyx and Gordon would have been going as well if it werent for the ened of HL2... would have taken a while. The helicopter models in the hangar are modelled after the real life bell helicopters I presume are Mil Mi-8, who are not the fastest or have particularly long operating ranges, but assuming a few things (i.e. extra fuel storage, throwing out anything else not needed to make it lighter and maybe have less consumption and being faster as well, imaging they have the fastest model with the biggest tank), they still would have to travel at say 250 kmh max. From Odessa in Ukraine for example (HL2 is presumably set in the former eastern european region and I think even some set pieces are modelled after real life places in Odessa so I just took that as reference) to the arctic it is more or less 5000 km, likely more depending on where exactly the borealis is. With 250 kmh max you would need some 20 hours for a flight. Possible in the timeline, but still I like the portal theory for fast travel (for Judith at least) better. There is only one problem lore-wise inside Half LIfe: We literally get told the only travelling device locally (meaning on earth) for the combine is the dark fusion reactor on top of the citadel, nothing else and Breen uses it at the end before it gets destroyed by gordon, which makes it impossible Judith could have used the ONLY AVAILABLE Portal from the Citadel. I mean she could also have made it via another route of transport to White Forest, but then the Portal to the Arctic is the only possibility as she otherwise would not have made it in time to the arctic, there is just too little time for another helicopter ride from her side and the time Gordon and Alyx take to White Forest where they intercepted the transmission. But then that begs the question: Why does White Forest not use the portal themselves if Judith had one available and send Gordon and Alyx via Helicopter? Possible reasons could include Judith ahd her own (maybe even secret) teleporter, the one they previously had broke for whatever reason, there is another rebel post or location that hosts one we do not know about (yet), but these are all a little bit out there... But I like the idea Gordon and Alyx were longer in Stasiis as well. The problem with this is... who stabilized the core in the meantime? The vortigaunts? If so, why did Gordon need to go in again to stabilize it, so they could even evacuate more people as stated in EP1 by Kleiner? If they had a couple days, surely most folk already would have been evacuated, making such undertakings unnecessary...
@@Luemm3l the core could have been still stabilized while the combine figured out what was going on with the citadel or what to do next.. lets say the initial citadel explosion as well as breens emergency escape teleport were unexpected by the combine scattered all over the earth. with breen gone and the citadel and combine teleport system broken they may have used the first hours to try to stabilize the citadel to buy some time to prepare the emergency transmission and personnel evacuation. when they were ready after one or two days, they disengaged the core stabilizers and it may have taken another day until the core got critical as we see it in EP1.
Great video! Though for visuals I want to mention that in many of them the people present look like just NPCs spawned in Garry's Mod, with the default standstill animation and randomly looking at different things. It might not be possible with your setup, I don't know, but the characters could really use more focus/action/anything than that!
I love storytelling that involves complex and morally conflicted characters, so it's probably no surprise that Mossman is by far my favourite character the Half-Life universe. The part I find most interesting is one you don't bring up -- I think her main foils in the story are Breen and Gordon himself -- including the player by extension. She contrasts with Breen, who has all the power in the world but is still beholden to his own overlords, and too naive to use his position to put humanity in a better one. Judith has no authority, but she's incredibly cunning, she understands the power dynamics that are at play probably better than anyone else does, and ultimately she only answers to her own values. She serves as a foil to the player, because while Gordon spends the story working for G-man, and the player is railroaded through it without ever being given any choice of where to go next or who to side with, Judith only ever follows her own agenda and switches sides multiple times. To put that more plainly, everything that happens to Gordon in the story is a result of someone else's decisions; but everything that happens to Judith is a direct consequence of her own choices. So in a writer's terms, she bridges the gap between the hero and the villain while also shining a spotlight on the player's limitations in the game world -- a theme Valve loves to explore.

I would consider Laidlaw's story as the only canon in fact, he is the writer of the franchise after all. What we are talking about here is the story of the game. This is like if for some reason we J. K. Rowling fell ill or died or something in real life before writing the final Harry Potter book, and some other person gained the rights to it instead and then made an ending for the series themselves, yet we found notes in J. K. Rowling's home about how the series was going to originally end. I would consider Rowling's story to be the only canon, I wouldn't care if the publisher had published some last book written by another person who gained the rights to the franchise, that obviously wouldn't be canon just because it became commercial.
One thing is certain, the ending he posted is the finality to the actual games we had played up until that point, which were his work. The company now that owns HL wants to change the game into a new direction and try to create new story arcs so they don't have to finish it, and can keep it going. I would consider the Half Life Alyx game to be about the equivalent of Duke Nukem forever, made by an entirely different group of people than the original game. Heck even the head artist that worked on HL2 no longer works at valve anymore either. The games we once enjoyed were created by in essence Laidlaw and Antonov. We will never get the kind of story or aesthetic like that again, it's new people now trying to make the games. This is how franchises usually die as well, the original greats that made them great end up leaving, then it's up to a team of young people to take on the big franchise and hopefully not kill if off with making it lackluster.

those who seeks progress are mostly villains, sometimes they are great heroes like Judith. Its about point of view. Breens "progress of humanity" means his role is to decide about fate of humanity, Judiths simple "progress" is only her own, so she can choose her side, or make her own

I want to adress a thought on Epistle 3 but thats going to contain some spoilers from the Half Life Alyx Ending you are warned So i dont think that we still can in any way assume that Epistle 3 is in any way a possible Episode 3 sure its uncanon allready but it allways was a possible Ending, but since Half Life Alyx retconed the Episode 2 Ending by undoing the Death of Eli, theres a huge new Plotpoint that wasnt mentioned in Epistle 3, i dont think that the Part were Mossman gets capture and we will save her will be changed but that Alyx is going to kill her and the borealis getting destroyed is probably going to change, since with elis help they might use it in the Future and i believe if mossman is going to die that she wont die while all her efforts would lead to nothing, but thats just a thought of mine, im interested in youre opinion on that too

I can't see Alyx shooting Judith after all that, no less over an argument. She's hot-headed and protective of her dad and his wishes but after Judith proved herself to have done everything to play the combine for the good of the resistance, Alyx would surely be suspicious but hardly to the point of killing her. I've always liked Judith Mossman and I've always looked forward to discussion on this complex but ultimately heroic character. I really hope, if or when Episode 3 actually happens, that the Borealis is not destroyed. I think Eli and Alyx misunderstood the G-man's "Prepare For Unforeseen Consequences" message. I think Dr Kleiner and Dr Mossman are correct in that the technology on board the Borealis could not only defeat the Combine by sending them along with the nasty Leeches, Barnacles, Antlions, Headcrabs, Zombies and other hostile alien life off world, it could even recover the lost Earth water and species which ended up on Xen. Because of all this potential, I believe Dr Mossman ultimately worked for the good of all humanity and Earth itself. However if Alyx and Gordon foolishly destroy the Borealis all that would be lost and potentially the destruction of powerful teleportation technology could even reestablish an open Super Portal to the Combine Otherworld and Dr Mossman's work would have all been in vain.
Mossman was a true hero. Sadly, if we're going by Epistle 3, everything she did was for nothing

@@cactusmangaming In the Half-Life 2 companion book, "Half-Life 2 - Raising The Bar", its said that the Combine used a teleport to drain substantial amounts of Earth's oceans. This could mean that there was an exchange of at least aquatic lifeforms between Earth and the Xen borderworld.
Since the Earth's oceans are now low and full of "Xen Leeches" as seen in the Highway 17, Sandtraps and Lost Coast maps, it's possible some former Earth aquatic life could be living in oceans in the Xen borderworld if it was transported in the drained Earth water.
However any Earth aquatic life that wasn't teleported appears to have been devoured by the leeches. Those things have somehow evolved on Earth to become so vicious that there doesn't even seem to be other powerful Xen aquatic lifeforms let alone weak ones like barnacles, bullsquids and headcrabs in the Earth's oceans although some ichthyosaurs appeared to have survived the leech explosion.
judith is very clever. it seems like getting eli, alyx, and gordon to breen was her plan all along. she was waiting for her time to strike, when she stops breen from transporting them to the portal and calling in guards, she then tells him "we're doing what i could never do alone; we're STOPPING you". she definitely was very well aware of what both alyx and gordon are capable of, especially together, and knew they could stop breen from escaping earth.
During my playthrough, I admired Mossman. Kinda don't know why maybe through because of her appearance and voice. She really left a nice impression on me.

Judith, in all honesty, made the biggest move she probably never intended to do but enacted on anyway. She practically did something that the entire resistance would say no to simply because it could go wrong.

My personal theory is that Lamar actually saved Gordon. Judith knew Gordon was making his way to Kleiners lab, as Barney contaced Kleiner, Kleiner likely contacted Eli, and thereby Judith.
And so I think Judith played a part in Alyx getting through the teleporter just fine, but when it came to Gordons turn. I believe Judith had tampered with the teleportation destionation of Gordon, trying to deliver him to Breen already at the beginning of the game.
Gordon could go anywhere on earth, as shown. But somehow, one of his locations were right into Dr. Breens office.
I think this was his intended destination, plotted by Judith. But due to Lamar messing up the teleporter, Gordon ended up circling back to outside Kleiners lab.

Part that Judith may have fiddled with teleporter occured in my mind during wathing this video.
I like how Gordon has hunched over gamer back in all the third person perspective shots in this video. Makes me feel better about myself.
Judith's plotline never made sense to me. It's so convoluted and I still can't tell if she was a double agent or just realized she messed up and changed her mind. The scene where they outsmart Breene in the end of HL2 drives me crazy. The idea of someone as intelligent as him locking himself in a room with three of his greatest enemies (and Judith who is obviously second-guessing everything he does) with no guards is ridiculous.

@@marcoboscarol2420 I'm talking about how he was alone with them and chose to leave the guards outside. That was when he was still in control and I thought it was too convenient for the plot.
he has the guards leave because the next thing he discloses is that he now holds the Combine in a checkmate, having Eli (superior teleportation innovator) and Gordon as leverage, while also implying he's aware of the Gman. He doesn't want his superiors or overwatch snitches to hear his proposition. He still thinks he's "negotiating" with the Combine, likely with Judith as an accomplice. Judith may have been waiting to see if Breen was going to decide to keep the Vance's alive or kill them, which may have hastened her to pick that moment to make her move.
However, I think the only thing that would make Judith make sense in the HL universe as a whole, is if she was secretly an ex Aperture Science asset (after Gordon snatched her BM job)...because how else would she know so much about the most top secret projects in Aperture's inner workings, like the Borealis and its utility and design? It's also unclear to me who her Borealis videocall to the Citadel was meant for, since went after the Borealis alone behind Eli's back.

I think one of the following lore videos should be about Russell. The man simply was one of my favourites from the franchise so far and he is definitely crucial part of the resistance. Also maybe some lore videos about enemies in HL:A? The electrifying dog or w/e it was that Alyx fought against definitely an interesting creature. Reminds me somewhat of the Houndeyes from the first HL but it definitely had greater abilities.

I really like how these lore videos humanize everyone. Characters in good stories don't just do things out of pure malice; there's always a reason for things. I have always disliked Judith, even after she "redeemed herself" by turning on Breen. But this gave me just enough extra insight to where I can see why she did what she did. Although I still dislike her, it's given me a better perspective.

I will be honest. The first time that I learned that Mossman was a spy for the Combine when playing through Half-Life 2 for the time....I wanted to deck her.
Speaking of Judith and Epistle 3, my personal headcanon is that Epistle 3 would have been the original timeline, aka the timeline that would have happened if Alyx had not made the deal with Gman to save her father.
Will we still arrive to the Borealis in this new timeline? Who knows. At least if we do, it'll look prettier than it did in Source
IMO there is one major flaw in judith story: at the end of hl2 she is at the citadel and in the beginning of episode 1 we already see her being in the arctic and having found the codes. how could she get there so fast and already have results within hours? how much time has really passed between the end of hl2 and the beginning of episode 1? it could only be explained if gordon and alyx were in this stasis state of gman for a couple days before being freed by the vortigaunts..
that is something I also always had a problem with and tried to explain it with a portal in the citadel that goes directly to white forest and from there she takes off... take a day, which is somewhat how long Gordon and Alyx take in EP 1, maybe a little more and within a day she could have made it into the arctic. although barely, timewise, if she also took the chopper route. I think a portal to arctic is more plausible. Now the chopper route, that Alyx and Gordon would have been going as well if it werent for the ened of HL2... would have taken a while. The helicopter models in the hangar are modelled after the real life bell helicopters I presume are Mil Mi-8, who are not the fastest or have particularly long operating ranges, but assuming a few things (i.e. extra fuel storage, throwing out anything else not needed to make it lighter and maybe have less consumption and being faster as well, imaging they have the fastest model with the biggest tank), they still would have to travel at say 250 kmh max. From Odessa in Ukraine for example (HL2 is presumably set in the former eastern european region and I think even some set pieces are modelled after real life places in Odessa so I just took that as reference) to the arctic it is more or less 5000 km, likely more depending on where exactly the borealis is. With 250 kmh max you would need some 20 hours for a flight. Possible in the timeline, but still I like the portal theory for fast travel (for Judith at least) better. There is only one problem lore-wise inside Half LIfe: We literally get told the only travelling device locally (meaning on earth) for the combine is the dark fusion reactor on top of the citadel, nothing else and Breen uses it at the end before it gets destroyed by gordon, which makes it impossible Judith could have used the ONLY AVAILABLE Portal from the Citadel.
I mean she could also have made it via another route of transport to White Forest, but then the Portal to the Arctic is the only possibility as she otherwise would not have made it in time to the arctic, there is just too little time for another helicopter ride from her side and the time Gordon and Alyx take to White Forest where they intercepted the transmission. But then that begs the question: Why does White Forest not use the portal themselves if Judith had one available and send Gordon and Alyx via Helicopter? Possible reasons could include Judith ahd her own (maybe even secret) teleporter, the one they previously had broke for whatever reason, there is another rebel post or location that hosts one we do not know about (yet), but these are all a little bit out there... But I like the idea Gordon and Alyx were longer in Stasiis as well. The problem with this is... who stabilized the core in the meantime? The vortigaunts? If so, why did Gordon need to go in again to stabilize it, so they could even evacuate more people as stated in EP1 by Kleiner? If they had a couple days, surely most folk already would have been evacuated, making such undertakings unnecessary...
@@Luemm3l the core could have been still stabilized while the combine figured out what was going on with the citadel or what to do next.. lets say the initial citadel explosion as well as breens emergency escape teleport were unexpected by the combine scattered all over the earth. with breen gone and the citadel and combine teleport system broken they may have used the first hours to try to stabilize the citadel to buy some time to prepare the emergency transmission and personnel evacuation. when they were ready after one or two days, they disengaged the core stabilizers and it may have taken another day until the core got critical as we see it in EP1.

Great video! Though for visuals I want to mention that in many of them the people present look like just NPCs spawned in Garry's Mod, with the default standstill animation and randomly looking at different things. It might not be possible with your setup, I don't know, but the characters could really use more focus/action/anything than that!
I love storytelling that involves complex and morally conflicted characters, so it's probably no surprise that Mossman is by far my favourite character the Half-Life universe.
The part I find most interesting is one you don't bring up -- I think her main foils in the story are Breen and Gordon himself -- including the player by extension. She contrasts with Breen, who has all the power in the world but is still beholden to his own overlords, and too naive to use his position to put humanity in a better one. Judith has no authority, but she's incredibly cunning, she understands the power dynamics that are at play probably better than anyone else does, and ultimately she only answers to her own values.
She serves as a foil to the player, because while Gordon spends the story working for G-man, and the player is railroaded through it without ever being given any choice of where to go next or who to side with, Judith only ever follows her own agenda and switches sides multiple times. To put that more plainly, everything that happens to Gordon in the story is a result of someone else's decisions; but everything that happens to Judith is a direct consequence of her own choices.
So in a writer's terms, she bridges the gap between the hero and the villain while also shining a spotlight on the player's limitations in the game world -- a theme Valve loves to explore.

I would consider Laidlaw's story as the only canon in fact, he is the writer of the franchise after all. What we are talking about here is the story of the game. This is like if for some reason we J. K. Rowling fell ill or died or something in real life before writing the final Harry Potter book, and some other person gained the rights to it instead and then made an ending for the series themselves, yet we found notes in J. K. Rowling's home about how the series was going to originally end. I would consider Rowling's story to be the only canon, I wouldn't care if the publisher had published some last book written by another person who gained the rights to the franchise, that obviously wouldn't be canon just because it became commercial.
One thing is certain, the ending he posted is the finality to the actual games we had played up until that point, which were his work. The company now that owns HL wants to change the game into a new direction and try to create new story arcs so they don't have to finish it, and can keep it going. I would consider the Half Life Alyx game to be about the equivalent of Duke Nukem forever, made by an entirely different group of people than the original game. Heck even the head artist that worked on HL2 no longer works at valve anymore either. The games we once enjoyed were created by in essence Laidlaw and Antonov. We will never get the kind of story or aesthetic like that again, it's new people now trying to make the games. This is how franchises usually die as well, the original greats that made them great end up leaving, then it's up to a team of young people to take on the big franchise and hopefully not kill if off with making it lackluster.

I want to adress a thought on Epistle 3 but thats going to contain some spoilers from the Half Life Alyx Ending you are warned
So i dont think that we still can in any way assume that Epistle 3 is in any way a possible Episode 3 sure its uncanon allready but it allways was a possible Ending, but since Half Life Alyx retconed the Episode 2 Ending by undoing the Death of Eli, theres a huge new Plotpoint that wasnt mentioned in Epistle 3, i dont think that the Part were Mossman gets capture and we will save her will be changed but that Alyx is going to kill her and the borealis getting destroyed is probably going to change, since with elis help they might use it in the Future and i believe if mossman is going to die that she wont die while all her efforts would lead to nothing, but thats just a thought of mine, im interested in youre opinion on that too
