I cant help but feel people are expecting too much of Qualcomm. its interesting and they will likely be good at certain tasks, but its going to take some time to properly compete with a company like AMD in most markets.

Apple's M1 was a hit from version the start. I truly believe the chip is ready. The main question is, is Microsoft ready with the "Rosetta" alternative. That's where the key to success lays.
Thing is Apple control the software and hardware in a locked eco system. Qualcomm don’t.
@@buyingastairwaytoheaven5252I’m sorry but I’m not buying that that makes any real difference to end performance of native code. The translation layer (Rosetta) sure, but ARM is not some unknown, it has tons of existing native APIs, and I just don’t see Apples AMX add-on extensions making that much of a difference to general use.
Besides Qualcomm is claiming up to 28% advantage over M3. If the product is as they claim (which I have my doubts) they should have no problem beating Apple regardless of lack of vertical integration.
I think it will depends from how good, and for good i mean efficient, Zen 5 will be. I'm sure 12 zen 5 cores in Strix point will annihilate the benchmark scores of this 12 and 10 cores Qualcomm cpus, but, at the moment, if the numbers they're telling us will turn out to be true, all the 70U and 80U series from AMD will loose A LOT of appeal in the laptop market (same for Intel). People that are buying these type of laptops don't do anything special with the PC, just the basics, and they can benefit a lot from a super efficient Arm cpu since all the basics app are now Arm based. From the rumors that are running around it doesn't seems that we'll have any fanless x86 Amd form factor soon, so also that type of design could be a huge win for Qualcomm. We need to wait and see, the good thing in my opinion is that, now more then ever, AMD and Intel will focus A LOT on efficiency (especially Intel) for laptops, and that's a huge win for everybody in the Windows and Linux ecosystem.
The stats look impressive but it think we need to see how they perform in the real world.
Compatibility and performance running x86 stuff is crucial for most....we'll see

@@olivur_1459Apple doesn’t have nearly the same amount of legacy baggage that Microsoft has. Apple doesn’t even support 32 bit apps anymore. If we’re talking modern .Net APIs I’m sure it’s no problem for Microsoft to get good performance but there’s some obtuse ancient Windows stuff that’s still being used which could be a pain and or slow to translate without massive rewrites.

How to take that diagram in to consideration without time period?
I wonder how good driver and software support is for the package. For example, scanner, printer; and ffmpeg support for AV1 encode, Chrome for AV1 decode. Looking forward to the reviews!

I’m watching this with a lot of interest. No need for a laptop myself but if these work well there are certainly uses for desktops as well.
CPU, NPU and creator apps would be better almost on par with apple silicon but GPU might not. GPU might compete with handhelds.
I'm the biggest fan as one can get, but there are some troubling news about SOC power consumption regarding the Snapdragon X Elite

Pretty excited to see how well they have ironed out the bugs with regards to Windows running on ARM. Would be great to see performance per watt on Windows meet or exceed Apple's offerings.

Its amazing to thing that all of this started from the humble origins of the BBC micro. Who would have thought this architecture would have spread around the world like this.
lets wait and see if the pricing is competitive. will be fascinating to see how they are received by the mass public who walk into curries and pcworld etc. if they can break out of the 'but mummy I want an Intel they are the best' mindspace. Cause thats the audience for these, generally.
Most people don't know/care what processor is inside at this performance level. That's a much bigger demographic. Think corporate workers, school, retail, old people, non techie, etc.
Surely Intel and AMD have to be worried about this new entry into the market.

A 12-core X Elite getting 28% better multithreaded performance than an 8-core M3? Not a terribly impressive claim, though the Oryon cores might use less transistors, die area and/or wattage than the M3's performance cores.
I wouldn't count on it beating the M3 in lightly-threaded tasks, but otherwise I'm cautiously optimistic. It's not like I actually need an M3's performance, though I would appreciate a lighter laptop.
I'd like to see if they manage to beat Apple with their 3rd generation of processors in 3 years' time. They already basically did with phones, so nothing should be stopping them from doing better with later iterations
Why would when Qualcomm does it, it’s not impressive? I’m not impressed with M3 for beating Intel’s latest chip. No one cares about using a laptop unplugged when it’s usually plugged in. PC laptops are still priced much cheaper below $1K than any comparable Mac that starts over $1K for gimped performance.

Anyone who is actually going to do his job well is going to do it at a desk, either in the office or at their home, with at least one external monitor plugged in. Chances are, you're going to have a wall outlet nearby, and will use your laptop with various peripherals that drain power faster.
I haven't seen anyone doing especially productive things at a cafe or somewhere else. And even when they are indeed using their laptop, then they likely have a wall outlet in their vicinity. So the 6-core Ryzen laptops are plenty enough for work nowadays - but I am interested in the lowest-end Snapdragon X Plus SoCs, perhaps they'll provide great single and multi-core performance at lower TDPs and with great idle battery life for a good price.

The software support is going to be key.
they do look incredible. I know in work, the latest M silicon macs run so much cooler, and faster than the intel ones we replaced them with. if this is as good, will make a lot of sense for the mobile market, as Intel and AMD struggle with heat and noise.

Notice 12 Core M3 Pro and 16 core M3 Max chipsets were skipped. The 8 Core M3 was teh basis of COmparison... SO is 28% Better multithread performance against a Chipset that has 8 fewer P-Croes and 25% Fewer COres overall that much of a better performance?

Unfortunately even if the benchmarks are reliable the x86 libraryof app and games are not going to rewrite itself to make use of the hardware.
I'm not a fan of this focus on NPU performance from both Qualcomm and Intel. Aside from a few neat party tricks (auto-masking in Resolve, some speech to text transcription stuff) I haven't really seen any major need for this tech yet. Most AI enabled apps don't run interference on your machine, and the ones that do work fine even without those AI features or when you use those AI features very sparingly. It sounds like a solution in search of a problem.
Rumor to be available for sale in laptops the Fall! Still a long wait and ways away!😂 Hopeful at least 480i pixels and laptop cost less than $5K U.S.
dont know if we will have a fanless device to compare with air m3.
It won't matter unless the software is as optimized as it is for Apple and the M series chips.

yes snapdragon compared to applied M chips is already running Linux os, you only need to easily find on TH-cam video showing that, don't be lazy.
Does Windows' x86 emulator for ARM chips work as well as Apple's Rosetta?

I doubt it, Apple is a closed platform they have complete control over from software, hardware support to execution. Qualcomm are dealing with so many more variables.
Running Windows 11 ARM on my Mac, the x86/x64 emulation is actually decent. Though my apps aren't too demanding.

Can imagine this is going to be a bit of a game changer. Intel really need to get their backside in gear if they are going to compete. The key is performance per watt.
I'm skeptical, know it's apple and orangle comparison, but they are benchmarking a Qualcomm "4nm" processor against an Intel "10nm" processor.
Obviously what matters is the transistor density and from that comes the price, we will see I guess.
I'm just saying by the time Microsoft and Qualcomm will iron out the issues that rise from switching to ARM maybe Intel will catch up in manufacturing process and the whole thing will be a vash.
If this Qualcomm chip is not an x86 architecture chip does it run Windows 11 by emulation?
It runs a arm recompiled version of Windows

My only issue with Qualcomm is they have always been a bit lacking in driver support.
this time looks that are ready even Linux working.
Not sure about the GPU performance but it seems are way less than capable compared with Apple M series or with AMD 780m or Intel Arc. if Im wrong someone to correct me. Im talking about the 3d capabilities not sure about videos encoding.
Could be good but they are only as good as the support from the OEMs.

My intel laptop runs hot. Drinks battery and is loud as a helicopter. Let’s hope Qualcomm show them how it can be done right.

I couldn't care less about benchmarks. What I care about is a fast and responsive desktop experience (especially when it comes to scrolling and animations), and battery life. Smooth scrolling in a browser seems to elude Windows. It kinda half works, but there's *ALWAYS* jank (skipped frames). It's not pixel perfect, even on very powerful hardware. There's something fundamentally flawed with the Windows rending pipeline. Mac OS does a much better jobs, especially considering Mac OS is coupled with high-end Mac hardware (e.g. the MacBook trackpad has been the world leader for about a decade now). Linux (with Wayland) has made heeeeeeeee-uge improvements with its rending pipeline. I'd even go so far as to say Linux has caught up and maybe even surpassed Mac OS on this front. As an example: Linux + Wayland + laptop with glass trackpad + Firefox + 90Hz (or higher) display = the smoothest near-pixel-perfect scrolling I've ever seen.
Will wait for the reviews, see if they match up to the claims made by Qualcomm. The integrated graphics should be better than Intels iGPU after all Qualcomm did buy ATI's mobility division years ago and Intel's iGPUs have always been pretty poor for gaming.
oh great, Qualcom uses the exact same unitless graph comparing x and y as Apple does, the only reason to expect great things is that this chip was designed by the M1 team wasn't it

I fell for the hype lets be honest it doesn't really matter how powerful the snapdragon x elite chip is when a lot of legacy software is rather going to point blank not work or run like ass because it is emulated this is not a shot at snapdragon they did a great job but Microsoft will probably not use it to it's full potential because other than good battery life windows on arm sucks which is a shame because i like the look of a couple of devices

I'm not impressed. The specifications are not describing the cache well enough. The core types are not listed. What are they. All we know is they are Arm chips. With 42mb total cache we haven't got anything concrete to compare this to other arm chips other than marketing nonsense

Really think AI is such an overused thing at the moment.
The Snapdragon X Elite won't even come close to the Apple M-series silicon. It'll be very "first gen", and will have all the issues first-gen tech has. It'll overheat, won't perform as well, have a higher power draw etc etc etc... On top of everything else, it'll be running Windows!!! Windows is terrible - very inefficient.
Arm for Windows is a joke. If Microsoft commits to Arm like Apple committed to the M series, then that's something to worry about, but Microsoft has too much of a market share with x86-64 to do something so drastic, so I'm afraid this will be another long and drawn out death where we get great hardware but horrible windows emulation for x86-64.
At least they’ll be great Linux laptops

There are several press releases of benchmark software that the x elite is not been oficially benched and the numbers are extremely exaggerated said beta testers... the chip performs actually very poorly close to an an Intel Celeron.

Microsoft is a software company and apple a hardware company.
To be fair neither Microsoft nor apple is making these chips - the comparison is a little bit too high level.
There are plenty of Microsoft Surface products and let's not forget Xbox.

@@KitGuruTech the Xbox does run a fully AMD setup and a gaming console is quite different I don't see arm there in the next gen.. the important factor is the GPU and here Qualcomm is underwhelming

They need a more powerful CPU to be in the game, not one weaker.
And it needs to come in at lower pricing than the x86, AND it's needs to have more than 64 gigs available, bty the time this is on the market, 32 gigs will be low end laptop config, my 7 year old 1k laptop has 32 gigs, I'm not buying a new one with less than 64 if I want it lasting the next 7 years

Apple has the advantage of having a closed hardware ecosystem. Imagine if Microsoft said Windows 12 will only run on Microsoft hardware, that will cost 2x to 3x the price you pay now.... oh and you can't upgrade your ram or ssd with our ecosystem... just go pay for a new system.

yeah umm it be nice to have highe end windows laptops finally get a really efficient and powerful arm CPU, + having nvidia is a major advantage over METAL family GPU's (as of now).
Imagine an XPS16 or Asus zenbook pro or something else finallly staying quit all day with top notch battery life and amazing performance, ITS a DREAM!
What im even more curious about is nvidia's upcoming mobile arm CPU's, nvidia CPU + GPU is going to be overkill. I hope Apple is doing well becuase team green is a serious threat.
