A car like that did in fact exist in the 1920s. I went to an American car show recently and they got cars from the 1920-30s that looked like that. They did their research so well! Even the glass breaks like normal when it is shot at, because safety glass didn't exist back then on cars!
Yeah, Tracy Butler (the creator of this and the webcomic) is VERY punctual on getting every detail of the roaring 20's and the Great Depression of the 30's. Guns, Cars, outfits, cultures, jobs, language dialects, the whole 9 yards to the next haberdashery!
Though, it should be noted that their Ford Model A is slightly anachronistic; this pilot takes place in mid September 1927, while the Model A first hit the streets in December of that year. And they were using this car in the web comic as well, which take place in May. But they already show that they care enough about portraying the era right that I’m not going to complain about a car being a few months early lol
Personally I hope Rocky’s snazzy T.B.I makes an appearance imo it really sets the tone for the later installments and the series stakes…also the scar really suits him halfway between adorable and disturbing.
For anyone wondering why Mordecai doesn't take that clear shot at Ivy: Ivy Pepper is Lackadaisy's long-time 'jazz baby' - adopted by Atlas May (founder and original boss of Lackadaisy) as his goddaughter. When Atlas died, Viktor assumed the mantle of Ivy's godfather. Viktor and Mordecai were partners throughout most of Lackadaisy's history, so Mordecai well understands *exactly* how extreme Viktor would react towards anyone who harmed Ivy. Mordecai detests the Savoys, so he wouldn't lose any sleep if *they* killed Ivy - a very satisfactory reckoning to his way of thinking - but Viktor would know Mordecai's handiwork (if he had taken that shot) and has absolutely no desire to incur his former partner's personal wrath.
Um... Is this a theory, or is it confirmed? Because, based on the comics, I would assume Mordecai wouldn't be overly concerned with incuring the wrath of Viktor, having kneecapped him to force him into retirement upon his departure. I just assumed he couldn't bring himself to pull the trigger here because of the sentimentality mentioned by Serafine, especially given this entire thing was a trifling matter to begin with, and he only seemed to feel Lackadaisy was worth their attention after it was all over.
@@Feed-Me-Lore AFAIK, it's not canonically confirmed. But as former partners-in-crime, I doubt *ANYONE* would know Viktor better than Mordecai. Viktor has repeatedly show himself to be more a force of nature than a mere mortal being - akin to the berserkers of lore. There was that one ambush in the comics where Viktor took a shotgun blast to the chest and just kept fighting as if he'd never been shot; only after it was all over, and everyone else was safe, did he settle down and his injury began to affect him. Also in the comics, Mordecai saw first-hand how Viktor took hits and shots which would have felled anyone else and just kept on coming - and that was "just business". As his former partner, Mordecai also knows that Viktor is far more cunning than one would expect from his rough exterior. I'm pretty sure you'll agree that Viktor would make it his mission in life to bring tremendous suffering to anyone who harmed Ivy. And I'm sure you'll also agree that few people would understand this as well as Mordecai. I, for one, would never risk giving that surly Slovak reason to specifically come after me!
@@twylanaythias While I'm sure Viktor would definitely want to hunt Mordecai down like a dog if it ever came to that, I'm just not convinced he'd be very effective in his current state. "Viktor took a shotgun blast to the chest and just kept fighting as if he'd never been shot." No, he did not. He managed to punch out one guy after being shot, but he was woozy and coughing and visibly "a mess" according to Ivy, and in denial about needing a doctor. He was not firing on all cylinders. "Only after it was all over, and only after everyone else was safe, did he settle down and his injury began to effect him." His injury effected him immediately, but ignoring that, Freckle was still actively shooting farmers when Viktor settled down. Rocky was still being hunted down at that time. Viktor tried to get down to the bar to help. He didn't stop because the threat was taken care of, he stopped because he couldn't get down the stairs, because of his bad knee. "See? This is why you're supposed to be tending to the bar now," Ivy says, commenting on Viktor's lack of effectiveness in the fight. Peak Viktor may have lasted longer, and maybe he'd even have taken care of the farmers after getting shot, but Viktor today can't manage stairs. Hell, Viktor probably wouldn't have been shot at all if he was still in peak condition, but he wasn't. Mordecai crippled him. "Mordecai saw first-hand how Viktor took hits and shots that would have felled anyone else and just kept on coming." That was before Mordecai shot the man in the knee, a step he took in order to hamper his effectiveness in fights, forcing him to retire. Mordecai was surprised Viktor was fighting at all, once he heard about how Viktor almost died that night. Mordecai is also insistent that the one tk blame for everything that's happened is Mitzi, because she insists on keeping Lackadaisy open, inviting the dangers that came naturally with this line of work. I'm not entirely convinced Mordecai wouldn't shoot Ivy if he was ever actually instructed to. Maybe he'd still opt out of it, maybe he still couldn't bring himself to do it, but he did promise, "do a more thorough job of 'destroying what you have left' if I'm asked to divert my professional attentions to you again." There's a good chance he only allowed himself to let his sentiments get in the way because he didn't have to kill Ivy, because this was a side quest that went astray. But if Asa told him to directly, he may force himself to act cruelly just as he has towards Lackadaisy since Atlas's passing.
Lackadaisy just epitomizes the phrase "every frame a painting" - in the speakeasy scene, you can pause on any frame with Rocky, Ivy, and Freckle, and it could be a promotional image.
18:48 the thing Rocky was fawning over before the explosives shack caught his eye was an old school steam excavator. Powered by a boiler like a train, it was coal powered and was essentially a train engine mounted to treads with a system of cables to mechanically raise and lower the bucket
Here's a fun one for the bar itself- the daisy in the language of flowers has represented many things, often associated with innocence and purity. It has had another specific symbolism in the past though- the ability to keep a secret.
Gotta say I hope Mordecai digs up enough information to justify shooting Asa right in the face. The sheer levels of blatent disrespect both here and in the comics.
I wouldn’t be surprised, especially since it’s been heavily hinted that Mordecai was heavily involved in Altas’ death, if not by pulling the trigger himself.

Funny thing. My grandmother had a cat that looked almost EXACTLY like Mordecai named Rigby. He died a while ago, he was almost 20 I think. I just thought it was interesting how you mentioned someone named Rigby while talking about Mordecai
You threw me off because I thought that was Rocky's last name, but upon thinking about it, I remembered it was Rickaby. The comic came out in 2006 and I don't know anything about Regular Show, so I don't know which came first.
Btw in the graveyard scene, Rocky mentions Burke and Hare "did much worse and things turned out fine for them". Burke and Hare were a duo of killers in Scotland who also worked as undertakers, killing at least 16 people in 1828. Hare was granted immunity from prosecution but Burke was hanged (Burke is still around, his skeleton is at a university).
So did a lot of the ‘body snatchers’ of Edinburgh and other areas. The main difference is that while most of them simply dug up graves to steal corpses, Burke and Hare straight up murdered people, as mentioned above. Fun fact, after Burke was hanged, his body was dissected, in a bit of poetic justice. That’s why his skeleton is on display at the University of Edinburgh’s Medical School.
7:28 love the sound play and science play here, as they say, "people with guilty consciences are startled by loud noises" hence getting startled by the train.
This is maybe the 5th time I've pointed this out, but there's a detail I really want to point out when Ivy clings to Freckle as Rocky leaves. Viktor notices Ivy and Freckle close, and he's like "woah, wtf is going on here-" and then he glares at Freckle. Freckle notices, he becomes worried. Next scene, Freckle is looking toward Viktor's direction. I'm sure if you've read the comic, you'd know exactly why. And you'd also know why he'd scratch the bar after Freckle and Ivy leave. I'm assuming Mitzi knows, since she's smiling at the two before patting Viktor on the arm once she leaves, too.
@Blue team John, Fred, Linda, Kelly Okay, so, spoilers without context, Viktor is one of those (surrogate) father's that are overly protective. Like the shotgun dads.
@@bones3056 ohhh that makes sense, gotta' love that big guy with a kind heart trope. Thank you mate.👍 (Much better than the big guy with a small brain trope in my opinion)
@@BlueTeam-John-Fred-Linda-Kelly It makes sense if you know **more major spoiler** Viktor has a wife and daughter out there that left him for currently unknown reasons. So he likely sees Ivy as a daughter… and has beaten up all her previous boyfriends (of which there are many). Which also may hint at why his family left in the first place.
A pretty accurate representation of it as well. There are so many historical references just in this pilot, and they embrace it even more in the web comic, to the point that you can tell when they take place just from the historic events mentioned (the web comic starts in May 1927 and this pilot takes place in September, due to the mentioning of Charles Lindberghs flight across the Atlantic and the death of Isadora Duncan respectively. The date “May 27th” is also conveniently shown in one of the newer chapters). This attention to detail lets me forgive them for the Ford Model A being anachronistic by a few months haha
I've seen this pilot several times now and something I really appreciate is that none of the character have a lack of motion. Even when someone is speaking and taking the focus the other characters are always reacting or moving in some way. It is really impressive.
4:46 Rocky IS wearing a zoot suit--which is actually anachronistic! I believe his costume design predated the actual comic by quite a while (you know how it is, having an OC and then later deciding on a story for them). Notable due to the 1920's accuracy of the rest of Lackadaisy, even if most modern day viewers wouldn't realize that.
@@cam4636 LOL! from the comic faq. Q. Why do some of your characters wear zoot suits? They weren't popular until the 1930's and 40's. A. Yeah, you can see the zoot suit look in some of the early art. Zoot suits are mostly associated with the 1940s, though, and also have some very specific cultural history that I wasn’t aware of when I first started work on the comic (see the Zoot Suit Riots of 1943). I’ve long since veered away from drawing the suits that way. Grasping 1920s fashion took some learning, as did many other facets of Jazz Age history. Research has been an endless, ongoing part of making this thing, really. I’ve learned so much along the way and I’ve corrected many of my own errors when possible. I’ll inevitably make more of them, though, as any point in history is a vast, branching, convoluted topic. So not drawn as a zoot suit. I know what a zoot suit and Rocky isn't wearing one
I have definitely watched the pilot over 60 times since launch. I can’t get enough of it. Rocky’s serenade in the beginning just drew me in automatically. Honestly I see alot of myself in Rocky and I relate to him the most. I really hope Lackadaisy gets a full series because it truly deserves to have one. The fact the comics have been around since 2006 is amazing. This Pilot has inspired me to return to honing my Art skills so that I can bring my own creations to life. I’m so excited for the future!
Something I didn’t catch until I reread the comic was that Rocky got excited about the quarry not just because of the potential explosions and fire - but because it was owned by Wick. Rocky doesn’t like the guy because he has a crush on Mitzi. So he was REAL excited to destroy Wick’s property.
Hmm, I've only read alittle of the comic, but Rocky is definitely devoted to her. He's constantly getting into brushes with death but refuses to quit the business because he seems to rationalize that Mitzi needs him to keep her business afloat.
@@BlueTeam-John-Fred-Linda-Kelly It’s complicated, to be sure. But Mitzi and Wick did have a couple dates and Rocky was extremely jealous. I think he wishes she would rely on him the way she relies on Wick’s connections and money.
Not quite a zoot suit. Similar, but zoot suits had much longer fabric and usually hung down to form a straight line at the hem, rather than the tassels of his suit. Could be something related or just inspired by them, but the proper zoot suit didn't become a thing until 1930 and is more identified with the 30s and 40s. The fedora isn't helping either, since that was also part of the traditional getup. Considering he's part of a big band and almost certainly in the jazz scene, I can see him picking up a predecessor to the style, but I can't find what that might've been called specifically. The light blue color is also a point against it- the typical zoot suit is usually in darker shades.
When I hear the word aeorta, I remember that it’s 1 am and I should be studying for my circulatory systems test in biology, but instead I’m watching people review indie shows.
I think the thing with Ivy's mouth is that, with Rocky, he smiles a big Cheshire cat grin that takes up half his face, while with Ivy, she has a small mouth that nevertheless, still stands out and stands out all the more compared to the mouths of Rocky and Freckle.
I mean, one of the first things Rocky does in the comic is burn down a barn, so that's not far off. Overall though, Rocky is the definition of "so crazy it might just work".
@@screamingcactus1753 a crew consisting of an on-field repair woman, light yagame with a gun a moral compass and bipolar syndrome, and Dante from DMC mixed with the pyro from TF2 sounds like one heck of a team to me.
I disagree that ivy is the brains you can see Rocky doing some intelligent stuff too When Freckle has the gun he yells ivy to stop the car he probably knew that if ivy stopped the car nicodeme (I think that was the brother name) would be obligated to move the car to one side and get closer when done that Rocky puts Freckle on the window so he could have a clear shoot While he is checking the paper I believe he is the one that made that research (explains why his face is on the paper too) so he is the reason why they found the alcohol In the comics *SPOILERS* When Rocky is captured by the pig farmers they decide to kill him with a train that is gonna pass by and he hears they had to kill one of the pigs they had on the truck and notices the dead pig next to him and when he is in the train rails he says “hey why not take advantage of this situation and put the pig here?” The farmers agree and they leave and Rocky has time to escape
Maple syrup in one's coffee (especially if locally produced / sourced) is an excellent sweetener. Two tablespoons are more than sufficient for my tastes.
Great start for a webseries. Side note it's nice to hear someone else remembers SWAT Kats. The 2nd season was awesome. I remember watching it after school at my grandma's as a kid. Back in the early days of Cartoon Network.
Lackadaisy was an awesome watch, I’m glad I was there for the premiere :) I love the way that rocky is animated during the intro to his explosive sequence, and in general 30:52 pretty sure the mining place they were at was his, I’d have to go back to see it but I’m pretty sure that the Minton place had his name on it “sable” Edit: yeah, sable stone quarry And then rocky calls him “Mr. Sable”
I've seen a lot of people not like the anatomy lines/circles in the animation, but I disagree with that crowd. I LOVE when animation still has the rough anatomy lines/circles from the sketches, I don't know what the style is necessarily but I absolutely adore when animators do that. It's just something about it that has a lively type of feel I guess?
Have you seen Wolf Walkers? It's by Cartoon Saloon, and it also has anatomy lines on some of its characters. Imo, it gives the cast more life and character to them!
Olive Branch is an amazing showcase of Swinghouse. Absolute bop, and one that fit's one of Freckle's unhinged rampages perfectly. Also loved that his voice dropped the octave when started shooting
Having recently gotten into Lackadaisy earlier this year thanks to the first trailer of it. Bingeing also have reread the comic about 12 times already, I'm so hooked on this long-running IP. Seeing the Pilot already at 6 Milli views! As of now makes me hope so badly that this will turn into a full animated series. Because this deserves to be more then a one-off Pilot. I'm so happy for Tracy Butler and Fable including the rest of the Lackacrew for bringing this pilot short to life. Hopes it brings the team more good news in the future. 👍🏾🙌🏾
I’ve been reading the comic and I can not stress enough how badly y’all need to read it!! It’s free and the comic art is somehow even more beautiful and matching the timeline. I love Rocky so so sooooooo so much!! To understand him you really need to read about him and Freckles life
A detail I love as a gun nerd, all of the firearms are period correct. The gun that the lady has is a 1918 Browning Automatic Rifle (BAR), then the one in the violin case is a Tommy gun, the pistol that the well dressed one has is an M1911, and I’m not sure what model that little pocket pistol is. But they’re all accurate!
Seeing lackadaisy get a full pilot is like seeing my kid graduate college and rocky is indeed wearing a zoot suit! It's not appropriate for the time but is meant to compliment rockys personality
The cars are accurate for sure! the red one Ivy drives is likely a ford, not quite sure about mordecai’s ride, but they did their research very well. I’m obsessed with this masterpiece!
Oh my goodness this so good! Everytime I watch it I notice new details. Like at 9:17 when she digs her foot into the ground to brace herself for the kick back of the gun **chef's kiss**
I believe with the series it will be more aligned with the comic. This pilot shows the character interaction, and stuff. Like a pilot should. Then it will do story stuff
Small and mousey is a good description. I think the slight Bucktooth look, adds to an overall appearance that’s a little more human than the others. I think that ends up making her look more attractive. I’ll note that the female cats are the ones with human hair.
Ha w you noticed that at 30:52 the guy rocky is talking to is probably the owner of the stone quarry The place was “sable” stone quarry, and rocky refers to him as “Mr. Sable”
So the bit at the end with JJ was him playing Taps which was written and played for fallen soldiers in battle implying he was "mourning" their little endeavor, or at least thats what it felt like to me as a musician.
Man I am BLIND. I totally didn't even register that the excavator was 3D. After watching A Fox in Space use blender to finish up some scenes its just a trip how good they can get 3D stuff to look with 2D these days.
Lackadaisy is set in the Prohibition Era 1920-1933. Cat's Don't Dance is set in the 1930's, specifically 1939. The same vernacular, slang, and fashion are relevant to both eras. Which is why Lackadaisy reminds a lot of people of Cat's Don't Dance. It's also set 50-60 years before the Fazzbear timeline so it was really, really stupid to even try to make a reference.
Can't help but laugh at how some of the subscription notifications in this video are perfectly timed with the dialogue (example 34:16) xD As for the pilot, it is just simply amazing. Both the animation and the writing is so well done.
Interesting detail that I don't see a lot of people mention, you can see the silhouette of the car at 8:59 behind Ivy, even before she turns on the light. Also, Rocky's singing an old Irish folk song called "whiskey in the jar" lol
if you stick around after the credits you can see a set of images of mister Sable arriving at his quarry to see the damage only to change to a second image showing the absolute horror on his face as his quarry is in ruins
Have you caught the slight rumbling of train wheels and the soft train horn between notes during Rocky's poem? or the fact the baddie's car can be seen silouetting before it even turns its headlights on?
I know Rocky opens with a poem about the Mississippi river...but right at the start it says "St. Louis" as it mentions how prohibition is in full swing.....that's in Missouri. Hearing Saber CONSTATLY talk like they were in the state of Mississippi kinda grinds my gears a little. I know it's a minor thing but it still kinda grates on a nerve of mine at the late hour I'm watching this.
A lot of use of the animation to get non-verbal. Use of the ears and tails to get reactions/moods across, as well as eyes and mouth, complimented by really good Voice acting and sound design. Not to forget the use of color to get the same vibes across.
There were steam shovels; but I think the one Rocky was riding had a gasoline engine.
The word Lackadaisy means indifference, lacking life or spirit. Which is ironic because it's very lively and bright.
irony must be foreign to you
Here's a fun one for the bar itself- the daisy in the language of flowers has represented many things, often associated with innocence and purity.
It has had another specific symbolism in the past though- the ability to keep a secret.
Mordecai's tail flick of frustration is amusing to me
Gotta say I hope Mordecai digs up enough information to justify shooting Asa right in the face. The sheer levels of blatent disrespect both here and in the comics.
you ever read blacksad? you'd probably like it if you like lackadaisy!
I wouldn’t be surprised, especially since it’s been heavily hinted that Mordecai was heavily involved in Altas’ death, if not by pulling the trigger himself.

Yes! I've heard Blacksad is really great! It's up there along with Lackadaisy and many other comics that are really well-made! ^^

Funny thing. My grandmother had a cat that looked almost EXACTLY like Mordecai named Rigby. He died a while ago, he was almost 20 I think. I just thought it was interesting how you mentioned someone named Rigby while talking about Mordecai
(Mordecai and Rigby are the central characters of a cartoon called Regular Show following their antics and exploits as complete slackers)
@@waffle911 Right. I remember that. I saw 2 episodes of that one time
You threw me off because I thought that was Rocky's last name, but upon thinking about it, I remembered it was Rickaby.
Hare was granted immunity from prosecution but Burke was hanged (Burke is still around, his skeleton is at a university).
they provided bodies for scientific examination
So did a lot of the ‘body snatchers’ of Edinburgh and other areas. The main difference is that while most of them simply dug up graves to steal corpses, Burke and Hare straight up murdered people, as mentioned above. Fun fact, after Burke was hanged, his body was dissected, in a bit of poetic justice. That’s why his skeleton is on display at the University of Edinburgh’s Medical School.
The body language feels really nice. I particularly like Mordecai's tail twitching in irritation and instincts tied to pouncing.

@@CatCheshireYeah, but more of, Freckles hates the craziness and tries to suppress it, Rocky sort of follows it.

I've already watched it twice and I genuinely can't wait to see it again. This pilot just oozes charm from every frame.
15:24 THE “NO” IS SO PERFECTLY TIMED HELP
Im here what do u need help with
I just noticed Freckle signs himself in relief when they open the coffin. Nice touch
Ok... I'm alright with a small spoiler, could you explain the meaning behind that if it doesn't hurt the story for me?
@Blue team John, Fred, Linda, Kelly Okay, so, spoilers without context, Viktor is one of those (surrogate) father's that are overly protective. Like the shotgun dads.

Viktor has a wife and daughter out there that left him for currently unknown reasons. So he likely sees Ivy as a daughter… and has beaten up all her previous boyfriends (of which there are many). Which also may hint at why his family left in the first place.
Like i said i love that Lackadaisy takes place during the era of Prohibition America, A time period in which gangsters gained fame!
@@Wishtelle Yes i am, I changed my name and for a number of reasons.
I've seen this pilot several times now and something I really appreciate is that none of the character have a lack of motion. Even when someone is speaking and taking the focus the other characters are always reacting or moving in some way. It is really impressive.
Yes! It looks so lively! Like it's a real movie with actors, who act even when they are not in the spotlight
:3
I love how Rocky is basically a musical kitty cat Joker.
And a feline poet
4:46 Rocky IS wearing a zoot suit--which is actually anachronistic! I believe his costume design predated the actual comic by quite a while (you know how it is, having an OC and then later deciding on a story for them). Notable due to the 1920's accuracy of the rest of Lackadaisy, even if most modern day viewers wouldn't realize that.
nope not a zoot suit. just custom suit that is way above his financial status
@@toomanyaccounts No, darling, it's not. Source: I know more than you
@@cam4636 LOL! from the comic faq.
BRUH I REALLY HOPE TO SEE LACKADAISY CONTINUE ITS SO GOOD
I have definitely watched the pilot over 60 times since launch.
So rocky and wick are both after mitzi? Interesting...🤔
@@BlueTeam-John-Fred-Linda-Kelly It's... complicated.
Hmm, I've only read alittle of the comic, but Rocky is definitely devoted to her. He's constantly getting into brushes with death but refuses to quit the business because he seems to rationalize that Mitzi needs him to keep her business afloat.
@@BlueTeam-John-Fred-Linda-Kelly no, it's because Rocky sees Mitzy as a mother figure, someone who took him in when no one else would
@@BlueTeam-John-Fred-Linda-Kelly It’s complicated, to be sure.

Of the trio, Freckle has always been my fave. But of all the characters I've gotta say Viktor, Mordecai, and the Savoys are my favorites.

I think the thing with Ivy's mouth is that, with Rocky, he smiles a big Cheshire cat grin that takes up half his face, while with Ivy, she has a small mouth that nevertheless, still stands out and stands out all the more compared to the mouths of Rocky and Freckle.
I feel like Ivy is the brains, Freckle is the gun expert, and Rocky is a pyrotechnician

When Freckle has the gun he yells ivy to stop the car he probably knew that if ivy stopped the car nicodeme (I think that was the brother name) would be obligated to move the car to one side and get closer when done that Rocky puts Freckle on the window so he could have a clear shoot

Having recently gotten into Lackadaisy earlier this year thanks to the first trailer of it. Bingeing also have reread the comic about 12 times already, I'm so hooked on this long-running IP. The music is absolutely incredible

I appreciate the lack of preamble before the actual reaction starts
I believe with the series it will be more aligned with the comic. This pilot shows the character interaction, and stuff. Like a pilot should. Then it will do story stuff
Small and mousey is a good description. I think the slight Bucktooth look, adds to an overall appearance that’s a little more human than the others. I think that ends up making her look more attractive. I’ll note that the female cats are the ones with human hair.
