Chirin is basically a soldier who goes off to avenge his country only to be turned into something hard & violent, unable to integrate back with the general population.
55:45 Used to Be a Sweet Kid: Used to chilling effect in this book and film. In the English version, the sheep reject Chirin because they apparently do not remember him and they are convinced that no fearsome beast like him could have come from their farm. In the Japanese version, the sheep reject Chirin because they recognized the bell he still wore around his neck and they could not reconcile the fact that the lamb they used to play with had grown up to become such a fearsome beast, which makes no difference either way, as it still conveys the same message.
28:14 sheep really don't like to adopt other sheep's babies sadly. Modern sheep farmers have to make makeshift birthing corrals to separate all pregnant sheep when giving birth, and if a lamb slips out of a corral into an adjacent one, the other mother will attack it as an intruder trying to steal her baby's milk. Not sure if it's only certain kinds of sheep, but that is an issue with them, and so if a baby loses its mother it's very hard to find a foster mother who won't ignore or attack it.
Pretty sure that's only certain types of sheep or certain situations. As I've seen farmers relocate lambs to different nursing mothers and it worked fine. It mostly works with very young ones though. They cover the lamb in the same birth scent and give it to the sheep.
There's a sheep farm channel on youtube and sheep are stealing each other's babies all the time. And there was a mother who started headbutting one of its own babies and the farmer picked it up and put it in another pen right next to it and it got adopted no problem. She raises Rideau Arcott.

I will say, not an anime purest or anything, but the subbed version is better. The translation is a lot more accurate, a lot of people that only know the English dub get confused as to why Chirin immediately changes his tune from wanting to avenge his mom to wanting to train with the wolf. The subtitled version makes it a lot more clear that Chirin still wants to kill the wolf, hes just training under him in the hopes of surpassing him. Different iterations of "student eventually beats master and kills him" is a Japanese story telling troupe. Including in revenge plot lines like this, in these the reason the master takes the student hell bent on killing them is either out of callousness and boredom, guilt and atonement, or to corrupt and groom the student to be their replacement in death (this is the one Chirins Bell most resembles). For whatever reason they changed the translation of the subtitled version and left out a decent chunk of the context behind both Chirin's and the Wolf's decisions and reactions. On top of that, the wolf actually has a name, its Woe. Also don't forget to watch It Was A Dark And Stormy Night.
@@blueflare3848 Saber has mentioned it's on his list, I haven't seen it in awhile either but I remember it being very good. The story of Chirin is one that shows what happens when you let hate and revenge drive and develop you. Chirin's adult design was meant to reflect that. No ungulate of this modern day grows horns like Chirin's. Antlers and horns of ungulates generally grow with a back wards curl or a curvature that aims to grab and wrestle. I would've recommended subs for this. It's an old dub, so there's quite a bit added noise and talking that wasn't in the original. Like some scenes/moments are meant to be silent.
The sound effects and voice acting give me a lot of Unico Vibes. I'm pretty sure the voice actor of the little lamb is the same English VA for Unico in those movies too. Tbh, Unico should get its own let's watch series, it's bonkers.
The person in chat that kept saying the sheep was voiced by Ash from Pokemon was really annoying. The film came out in 1983 in the US and little Chirin was voiced by Barbara Goodson, who sounds nothing like Veronica Taylor or Sarah Natochenny.
@@bearerofbadnews1375 personally, I'm waiting for the sequel; They should make Tigger to be made into an Ash Williams knockoff, who hunts Heffalumps and Woozels. Roo is his sidekick, avenging the death of Kanga.
18:15 Wolfes often attack sheep without killing them, just leaving them unable to move. That way they create a living food storage. But killing a sheep and leaving it is probably not very common.
Well it is actually Wolves when they enter a barn with sheep will indeed Slaughter every sheep they see, it's often called sport killing oe killing for fun, but there is a reason for that. Once it kills sheep, they think others will migrate somewhere far, so they kill every sheep to store their food supply, same goes for foxes, jackals and coyotes. But irl wolves would run away from large livestock guardian dogs such as kangal, Caucasian shepherd, sarplaninac, tornjak, great pyrenese and many other, wolf doesn't want to engage in any fight, and even if dog wants to, they don't stand a chance
Kinda feel bad for the wolf tbh. Just out here trying to eat. Decide to adopt one of your prey's offspring. Then he betrays and kills you, for a bunch of ungrateful sheep who never lifted a hoof to help him after his mom died.
The voice of adult Chirin sounded so familiar to me. Turns out it's Gregg Berger. (Grimlock & Jetfire from Transformers, Cornfed from Duckman, among others)
Telling you all. Saberspark is going to have that deer right where he wants them. About to win then BAM! The goose shows up and ruins his day. Just double teaming the poor man.
Kinda interesting to me is the way this sounds with the music and sounds in it. It reminds me of Rankin Bass movies like The Hobbit and The Last Unicorn.
Barbara Goodson (AKA Baby Chirin) has been in a lot of dubs, but Pokemon is not one of them. She has, however, been in Dragonball Z, Naruto, and Akira.
i swear the voice for this baby sheep is the same for UNICO. very similar animation too. and it's seriously an anime. it's not super dark or a furry fest, Saber. but i think you'd like it. it's cute and wholesome.
I know the plot needed him to be angsty n shite......but to be 100% practical... .Chirrin could have just chilled at the farm for a bit. Its the Farmer that would have the final say. And all he would see is a big strong Ram that is completely fine with being near humans. And also in need of a shear........because sheep and Rams cant get rid of their wool themselves and it can be VERY DANGEROUS for them to have it on for over two years. Add in the fact that he would eventually find that the bell wold tip him off that he escaped A pen.......or better yet.....it wpuld be marked with his own mark and boom. New Ram to have around the farm. Bonus......he does the job of all his dogs by being a badass Ram that would ward off other Wolves, coyotes, foxes and other predators. I mean......hell.....donkeys they say are better than dogs anyway for protecting herds because they can graze with the herd, they are physically stronger than wolves, and have a massive hate boner for canines. Chirrin would be a happy surprise and a blessing for the farmer that keeps having to deal with Wolf attacks.
Imagine thinking you could win against a deer, a buck especially lmao. Any animal for the most part. Even a CAT could fuck up a person. A CHICKEN would gore tf out of you.
When I first watched this I thought, okay it's basically Bambi but with sheep. As I kept watching, I realized that (in my opinion) it's a cautionary tale, about how innocence can be taken away and how in achieving vengeance, you could wind up being alone and/or worse the vary thing you ment to defeat.
7:41 - On the topic of that embarrassing, cringe-worthy Cruella live-make: even "justifying" her hatred of Dalmatians, she specifically targets puppies, so it's like if someone lost a family member to the Germans in WWII, and in revenge, they don't go after the people that did it, but German babies. Anyway, let's not forget, it is now canon that Cruella was the match-maker for Roger and Anita, not Pongo (which, admittedly, was silly, but it was for a way more fun fantasy-ish story). Also, I guess Cruella ages 50 years in one, apparently.
"One night, during a terrible blizzard" is in Japanese (at-least in the book, film might have rephrased it) exactly the same phrase as the title of One Stormy Night.
Sadly reason is why sheep didn't adopted now orphan chirin was beacuse they already had children of their own, they don't want another lamb to steal their baby's milk, so they reject if he would have been asking to be adopted, but nope Another thing is that these dogs aren't specifically made for guarding, there are breeds tough for that job, sarplaninac, kangal, Caucasian shepherd, tornjak, great Pyrenees and more designed to kill wolves

Very faustian bargain like if you ask me. 😎
The story of a kid who was adopted by his mom's murderer
Imagine if Anakin got adopted by the Tuskin Raiders and his mom got killed when he was little?
fanfic fanfic fanfic @@puterboy2
I would've recommended subs for this. It's an old dub, so there's quite a bit added noise and talking that wasn't in the original. Like some scenes/moments are meant to be silent.
I get that but credit where credit is due, the dub voices are not bad at all, and they do a pretty nice job for its time
The sound effects and voice acting give me a lot of Unico Vibes. I'm pretty sure the voice actor of the little lamb is the same English VA for Unico in those movies too. Tbh, Unico should get its own let's watch series, it's bonkers.
Your right, Barbara Goodson actually voiced Unico and Chriin in the English Dubs. Both made by Sanrio Animation.
The person in chat that kept saying the sheep was voiced by Ash from Pokemon was really annoying. The film came out in 1983 in the US and little Chirin was voiced by Barbara Goodson, who sounds nothing like Veronica Taylor or Sarah Natochenny.
"Lambert the sheepish lion" 1952 is more traumatic
Don't become the thing you hate. Also Watership Down was amazing. I miss when people realised children can handle heavy topics to some degree.
15:32 the ladybug was the real victim this whole time
i really like this movie, glad you guys reacted to it! :D
IIRC Tezuka (and the "cutesy" style) was directly inspired by Bambi.
I am loving this wolfs personality lol
Never knew this was by Sanrio, that's interesting
The voice of Chirin is Barbara Goodson. She played Laharl from Disgaea and Rita Repulsa from Power Rangers, among many others.
And Unico the Unicorn.
Naota from FLCL, and more recently, Turbo Granny from Dandadan.
Live Action Bambi will have Mother live, and go psycho on the hunters
You just gave a pitch for a Cocaine Bear spinoff sequel: Meth Deer
Actually that will be for the plot for “Bambi the reckoning.” The horror movie that be made the people that gave us Winnie the Pooh blood and honey.
@@bearerofbadnews1375 personally, I'm waiting for the sequel; They should make Tigger to be made into an Ash Williams knockoff, who hunts Heffalumps and Woozels. Roo is his sidekick, avenging the death of Kanga.
It'd be more like Zombi from Mad.
Bambo: First Blood.
If you want something devastatingly saddest anime movie, watch Barefoot Gen.
It's an anti-war flick but lots of devastation because of WW2.
18:15 Wolfes often attack sheep without killing them, just leaving them unable to move. That way they create a living food storage. But killing a sheep and leaving it is probably not very common.
Censorship is a bitch.
Well it is actually
Wolves when they enter a barn with sheep will indeed Slaughter every sheep they see, it's often called sport killing oe killing for fun, but there is a reason for that.
LOVE YOU GUYS

Bruh
i have to thank you, without your 2 vids on this old animation i would never have found it, this animation is beautiful, thank you saber
honestly watching this gave me strong gohan and piccolo vibes and the little lamb even sounded like young gohan
I'd recommend The Fantastic Adventures of Unico. It's a fever dream
Perfect timing since there's a new Unico Manga in the works.
I remember watching this on someone's tv waaaay back on the 80's. I couldn't remember the name of it till now. Was not expecting this lol
I can't believe that the wolf killed her mother, then she started crying.
I watched this sooo long ago in high school. I LOVED THIS SAD MOVIE :)
Little known fact
Ringing Bell takes place in the same universe as Animal Farm
A year late, but a deer would kick Saber's ass, no contest.
"MAMA! You can't be dead! YOU just can't be!"
I have this on VHS. A friend showed it to me. I will always be indebted to her for that.
Kinda interesting to me is the way this sounds with the music and sounds in it. It reminds me of Rankin Bass movies like The Hobbit and The Last Unicorn.
Omg yes!!!
Barbara Goodson (AKA Baby Chirin) has been in a lot of dubs, but Pokemon is not one of them. She has, however, been in Dragonball Z, Naruto, and Akira.
Fun fact a year or two ago when i found out about this movie i had a crush on Grown up Chirin purely because of his Japanese va's voice 😂
I like how you talked about the voice actor/actress... It is RITA REPULISIVE!
0:05 fun fact, sanrio studios made hello kitty 😂
i swear the voice for this baby sheep is the same for UNICO. very similar animation too. and it's seriously an anime. it's not super dark or a furry fest, Saber. but i think you'd like it. it's cute and wholesome.
It is the same voice actor! :D
That's because Baby Chirin's English voice actress is Barbara Goodson who also voiced Unico in both Unico Movies.
I can't believe this was made by sanrio
Ringing Bell walked so Vinland Saga can run
Her complaining about there being a hunter and kids in a live action Bambi, while the book has that. 😂
Man, when did I miss this movie night?? Movie night is the highlight of my week…or was. 😂 When we gonna do it again? ❤
Saber had some ADHD this session god damn.
I love this movie
Oooh please do Annabelle's Wish! I watched it a few times as a kid and forgot about it for sooo long and haven't heard anyone else bring it up.
I've never actually seen the English dub. I love this movie though. Such a good movie.
Oh I fucking LOVE Ringing Bell!
Yes, please do a stream for anebelles wish. That was my childhood.
So it's Vinland saga
Imagine thinking you could win against a deer, a buck especially lmao. Any animal for the most part. Even a CAT could fuck up a person. A CHICKEN would gore tf out of you.
When I first watched this I thought, okay it's basically Bambi but with sheep. As I kept watching, I realized that (in my opinion) it's a cautionary tale, about how innocence can be taken away and how in achieving vengeance, you could wind up being alone and/or worse the vary thing you ment to defeat.
I watched this movie back in a high school evening
Pretty much Vinland Saga if Thorfinn successfully killed Askeladd. It be interesting to see how the story would proceed with this dark side ending.
And Pongo and Perdita are siblings in this version, which means all of their puppies are horrifically inbred.
Thanks for that one Disney
This movie, i watched this as a kid and its really crazy.
What a sad story 😢
Also, Adult Chirin gives me Behemoth vibes for some reason
19:15 this scene was oh my god so dark…..
Imagine if her stomach was ripped open, then it would be WAYYY darker.
"One night, during a terrible blizzard" is in Japanese (at-least in the book, film might have rephrased it) exactly the same phrase as the title of One Stormy Night.
The death scene kinda reminds me of some sad stories of my OCs
I do have to say old animated movies always have done a good way of using color to feel the emotions.
excelent movie!
Sadly reason is why sheep didn't adopted now orphan chirin was beacuse they already had children of their own, they don't want another lamb to steal their baby's milk, so they reject if he would have been asking to be adopted, but nope
Another thing is that these dogs aren't specifically made for guarding, there are breeds tough for that job, sarplaninac, kangal, Caucasian shepherd, tornjak, great Pyrenees and more designed to kill wolves
Saber.......just do what most other people do.....call them Hydra Agents.
18:59 the fact I almost fucking cried 😭🙏🏽
I’ve never heard someone laugh the way rishi does 😂
thank god I watched the original japanese version, I wasn't expecting the wolf to be a decepticon
there's a lot of sound effects that I feel are unique to early anime, no idea how they work
19:49 That’s nice- laughing at this incredibly sad moment. 😒
As much as I love sheep. I laughed too.
@@Pupsteriadoesn’t help that anime can look hilarious at times, especially when the characters exaggerate their expressions.
I just wanted to scream RULES OF NATURE!!
Please upload your felidae VOD! I had to miss the stream and I want to see y'all watch it :)
What is this? I actually have no idea if I've ever seen this. It feels crazy nostalgic but I don't remember any of this. What weird limbo to be in.
Did. Did they change the music too!?
Is Saber a little hard to hear for anyone else or is it just my speaker?
And 30 seconds later it was addressed nevermind lol
Chirin soon learned the price of vengeance. He became lost as a result & he became a monster
