Atlas probably doesn't speak because Ivy doesn't remember his voice. Ivy may also only remember him from photos, which would mostly be black and white.
I think Atlas is just a grey cat who wears grey clothes. I think that’s what he looks like in reality. Of course there’s a reason for this character design though.
I asked Tracy about this on Tumblr. She said that Atlas has this greyscale appearance both because that’s what he actually looks like AND because he represents the main character’s fixation on the past.
This short takes place after the events in a flashback in the Lackadaisy comic (starting in Lackadaisy Gravediggers and ending in Lackadaisy Bygones), long before the events in the animated pilot. Victor and Mordecai were in a brawl/gunfight with some rival gangsters, during which Mordecai did, in fact, fall down some stairs and break his arm - and then stabbed a guy with a piece of the broken railing. Victor was telling the truth about not losing his eye in the war, though. While he did serve in the US military during the Great War (WW1), he lost his eye after moving to the US while participating in a worker's strike before the beginning of the story.
These, along with rocky dislocating both arms, being hit by a car, falling off a bridge and a piece of mining equipment, freckle being grazed by a bullet ricocheting off of a wall, that one weasel guy getting a broken nose, and many other examples, this comic/show doesn’t shy away from injuries.
Love this because it focuses on 3 of my favorite characters voiced by some great voice actors which both Ivy & Mordecai voice actors are both voice in the English dub of “Delicious in Dungeon” as Falin & Senshi
I absolutely loved the thumbnail artwork because it basically foreshadows Ivy following in her father’s footsteps later on in the future. Also having Edward Bosco be the VA for Ruby Pepper blew my mind! An also Atlas May, no voice lines whatsoever but he’s still a mystery even in life and having his overall character design to have monochromatic colors is just genius!
Ingenue is what got me into Lackadaisy! I watched the pilot but wasn’t really into it, but after this short I was ALL in, rewatched the pilot and fell in love with
I know! I remember watching it develop from the starts in like, elementary school. Animation memes and the like. Now I'm a Junior in highschool and it's deep into actual production, and merchandise is being made. Really cool to see. Hopefully the first season will be as good as the pilot.
A lot of props in Lackadaisy are CGI, so yes the gun is CGI and so is the entire background with GREAT texturing. The people responsible for the technical side sometimes post stuff on the official server, so that's where I find some of the little fun facts for how something is made.
Ruby is Ivy's dad! Not her brother! He looks very young tho in all fairness, it still makes sense as Ivy is very young in the short but also back then it was common to have kids when you were turning into a full fledged adult. And the short takes place around early EARLY 1920s, I think 21, so it makes sense why Ruby looks quite young here.
The talk of 2D vs 3D reminded me of episode 2 of A Fox in Space. Where they used 3D models in blender but got them to look pretty dang close to looking 2D. Given that its one dude doing all that, its wicked impressive.
12:50 Training an AI on only your own work causes technical issues. With a sample size that small, the resulting model would be prone to hallucinations, bad results, and other kinds of failure. In other words, AI that can't steal data is AI that sucks at its given purpose. Ps: Atlas' all-grayscale design reminds me of W.D. Gaster.
I always figured that Atlas' grey tones was partly that he's so far the only character in the main cast who is currently dead in the modern day of the comic and pilot, but since his eyes are colored here and his tail has that slight yellow on the bottom I bet he's also just naturally grey colors and REALLY leaned into it for his fashion LOL
Btw I'm not sure if someone here already wrote this, but the song used in the credits is a cover of a real life song called "Somewhere A Voice Is Calling" by John Francis McCormack ✨
Ai being used on a personal level isn't the worst thing for inbetween key frames buuut lets face it it always ends up going too far to replace things ...look at the history of horses and cars
@12:45 The one issue with that program is that people will use it on other people’s work. I’ve already seen an artist have their art style replicated by AI and being posted to the same site. As long as other people have access to your art and an AI, sadly nothing is safe. Though it might not be as problematic in the animator field
I think AI is fine. Like, for in betweens, go ahead and let it make them and then go over it again yourself after to polish it off or fix errors. You save time and still have everything pass through your hands. Win-win. It's about responsible use and transparency. It doesn't have to be an absolute black or white issue.
My guess is this is supposed to be a memory. Atlas is in black and white because she has so little interactions with him as a child most of her memories are of him in photos which are all in black and white. So that is how she see's him in her memory. Again just a theory.
I'm considering trying to use showrunner to distribute* actual indie animation (A.K.A. human-made animation). I hope it's not too locked down for someone to get something good weaseled in so the people who would be using it for AI schlock go "oh, this is awesome" and the animators can show that it actually takes work and talent to make something good. I feel like that might be an avenue to get people to side with us artists instead of these theiving a**holes. Then again, the AI bros tend to stick to their guns. This sucks.
i feel conflited about prodz still having a part to play in this animation studio after his racist ass remarks about who should be allowed to voice whom based on skin color, but at the same time i like how some people are all like forgive and forget. im on the fence here.
I wouldn't exactly call around a million views per video "everyone forgetting" about Lackadaisy lol Its just not on the same level of popularity that Hazbin Hotel/Helluva Boss and Amazing Digital Circus are... yet, at least. I think it deserves it, though. The Pilot was a sudden smash hit, but I'm guessing most people are just waiting for the first season to start coming out. Which should be sometime this year, if not early next year. There's bound to be more publicity coming its way once Season 1 drops. Their channel is almost to 1 million subs, after all.
The fandom is small but active, I'd say. It didn't become a mega-hit like some other web animations but I'm actually kinda glad it's like that. Big fandoms tend to gather more controversies.
@@aino-kaisav5504 Very true. I'm hoping that Lackadaisy is able to at least pull 10-20 million views per episode in the future. That seems like a good sweet spot where they're thoroughly recognized for their talent but also not too big that the fandom becomes overbearing and cancerous like other unnamed shows. Plus, I'm very grateful that the content farms haven't sunk their teeth into Lackadaisy yet.
It’s STILL crazy how Lackadaisy-Pilot came out a year ago.
I still love my Orange boi, the cutest mf I know :3

14:38 How dare Viktor laugh at Mordecai’s roller skating.
ProZD’s vocal length is just the right amount of both Devious and Machiavellian

He also got the cast from being shot by a shotgun in the arm before falling

I love that the backgrounds are just sepia toned, very limited colors.
I get the feeling that Atlas does have a legit color scheme but that's something they're holding off on for... reasons...

Is Reuben still alive by the time the comics start?
Reuben/Ruby Pepper is Ivy's father, so it was her dad that we saw
I LOVE the attention to historical detail in this series. The Twin Six Packard at the start had me in stitches. ❤

I just knew why they spend time talking more about AI animation arts, than talking about how did Lackadaisy making animation.
This vid is 19 minutes and 28 seconds long, sooo close to when the comic is set!
If someone creates an AI TV streaming service they had better not think we are going to be paying for it.
Like others have pointed out, Rueben is Ivy's FATHER, not her brother.
Love this and man i wish the show will have a s2 and be after the pilot!❤
If you haven't you have got to watch the short animation "The Red Eclipse". It is such an interesting short.
If you are possibly taking suggestions would recommend Dungeon Flippers.
I recommend Alan Becker. You could start with his older stuff, or with his newer stuff, but they’re both good.

The Ingenue short has over a million views. It is hard to keep interest in a series when you have a year without a new full-length episode.
