Being born Greek orthodox, I am glad to see someone explain and understand this and agree with this teaching. Ancient of days, wonderful counselor, almighty God, Lord of Lords and King of Kings, Yeshua.
The proverb Chapter 14 says it all about Wisdom. God is the WORD. He's not like us or what we think. God's a consuming fire. Only humility connects us wtih GOD. Theotokos is our greatest brdige on that matter. Christ, have mercy!
There are many icons of "The New Testament Trinity" which depicts the Father as the Ancient of Days, on Mount Athos, and in many other Orthodox holy sites. This image is on the Antimins of the Jerusalem Patriarchate. There is not a single patristic commentary on Daniel 7 that interprets the Ancient of Days as being the Son. The Fathers, and Christ Himself, connect the vision of Daniel with Psalm 109, and the session of Christ to the Right Hand of the Father. Obviously Christ was not seated at the right hand of himself. The title "Ancient of Days" is one of the Divine names that applies to all three persons of the Trinity, but in Daniel 7 it can only be the Father.
Great insight, Father! With that said how do we interpret what Fr. Peter put forth here and why do so many Orthodox treat it as the default Orthodox position to interpret the Ancient of Days from Daniel 7 as the Son. What about the Moscow Synod that declared it was the Son?
@@caseycardenas1668 The reply would be to ask them to show where the Father say that the Ancient of Days in Daniel 7 was the Son. The answer is: "They don't." The Moscow Synod has not fared well historically. It is the most overridden Council in the history of the Church.
Hymns that use the title "Ancient of Days" in reference to Christ only show that He is God. These are not commentaries on Daniel 7. One hymn that does comment on Daniel 7 is found in the Octoechos, Tone 5, Midnight Office Canon to the Holy and Life Creating Trinity, Ode 4, first troparion: "Daniel was initiated into the mystery of the threefold splendour of the one Dominion when he beheld Christ the Judge going unto the Father while the Spirit revealed the vision." "There was never any other time, at another time, the simultaneous appearance of the Father and the Son"... I'm not sure about that. With these matters, which are beyond our understanding, it's hard to say anything with total certainty. But there is the event where Abraham had the three visitors at the trees of Memre in Gen 18. Although those were sometimes interpreted as angels due to how Gen 19 sometimes referred to them, Abraham referred to them as "LORD", and scripture says "The LORD appeared" to him. It also says that the LORD would go down to Sodom and Gomorrah (leaving Abraham), but then it said still that Abraham still stood before the LORD when they did. I believe that might have been a Theophany of the Father as well as Son and Holy Spirit.
@@LadyMaria in Gen 18? The LORD says "I will go down to see", and also Abraham was talking to the LORD who didn't go down. And then in Gen 19, it says the LORD rained down sulphur and fire from the LORD out of heaven.

Is the depiction of The Ancient of Days with Jesus Christ, the God-Man, and the Holy Spirit out-right heresy? I would suppose so, yes or no? Forgive my ignorance and lack of understanding. I have an icon of the final judgement that has all three, the Holy Spirit is depicted as a dove. I have always wondered this. Your blessing Father.
I’m sorry Father I’m a bit confused. If Jesus is the ancient of days in Dan 7, is He giving Himself all authority and dominion? It makes the text a bit confusing.
I believe the Son as the ancient of days is representing the Father. No man has seen the Father at anytime as Christ himself says. The Son is the image of the Father and it is He who represents the Father to us.
@@boardbill5852 I would agree with that and that is the typical interpretation I’ve heard from the Fathers. But what Fr. here explained sounded a bit different.
John 1:18 (ESV) No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father’s side, he has made him known. John 5:37 (ESV) And the Father who sent me has himself borne witness about me. His voice you have never heard, his form you have never seen, John 6:46 (ESV) not that anyone has seen the Father except he who is from God; he has seen the Father. John 14:9 (ESV) Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 1 John 4:14 (ESV) And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world. St Ambrose of Milan explained it most clearly: "Let Him [Jesus] therefore stand in your midst, that the heavens, which declare the glory of God, may be opened to you, that you may do His will, and work His works. He who sees Jesus, to him are the heavens opened as they were opened to Stephen, when he said: "Behold I see the heavens opened and Jesus standing at the right hand of God." Jesus was standing as his advocate, He was standing as though anxious, that He might help His athlete Stephen in his conflict, He was standing as though ready to crown His martyr. Let Him then be standing for you, that you may not be afraid of Him sitting; for when sitting He judges, as Daniel says: "The thrones were placed, and the books were opened, and the Ancient of Days did sit." But in the eighty-first [second] Psalm it is written: "God stood in the congregation of gods, and decideth among the gods." So then when He sits He judges, when He stands He decides, and He judges concerning the imperfect, but decides among the gods. Let Him stand for you as a defender, as a good shepherd, lest the fierce wolves assault you" (Letter 63:5-6, NPNF, vol. 10, p. 457).
Angel means messenger. So that’s first thing. I believe in Exodus the Father says that He is sending the Angel of the Lord who has His name in Him. And that is the distinction.
Very controversial subject. Many try to justify images of God the Father with interpreting Ancient of Days to be God the father. There is a particular hymn in the midnight office I think that identifies him as the Father, but I think as Fr Peter said, the majority opinion is that it is the son.

Which is translated as: "The Beginningless Father should be painted as he appeared to the Prophet Daniel, as the ‘Ancient of Days.‘" This is not to attack the video I myself believe the Ancient of Days is only an energetic manifestation of the Father. By the Father through the Son and in the Spirit by the mode of the Father (Similarly to the Dove of the Holy Spirit). (correct me if I'm wrong).
