Attended Divine Liturgy for the first time a month ago or so. I have been raised protestant my whole life and we have raised our children that way also. We honestly did not know any better. That being said, glory to God for opening us up to his true church! My soul has been longing for this without me knowing exactly what was missing.

      INDEED:
“In Him we move and have our being…”
In Him means the Church; Christ is the Church: He is the Head and we are members of His Body.
We all yearn to be at home in this world, but we are strangers in a strange place. Only the Church is home here. Only in the Church do we find the paradise that He created and intended for us.

So much I don't understand, but it feels like I'm coming home. My husband is unsure, but willing to test the waters with me. He has a lot more to unravel from being raised protestant and attaching himself to certain reformers and beliefs. Pray for us, please!

Thanks for telling me about not crossing legs, as I just did that! Oops! I'm just coming to the church as an American so I need to be told about these things. Thanks for covering the basics. I'm hoping to become a catechumen soon, after ten years of being Christian finding the Orthodox church last year through stories of saints online. I have gone to different churches to find the proper one, I sometimes go to a Catholic grotto, but something was keeping me from converting. I know when I was in churches without saints it felt empty. I didn't know what Christian orthodoxy was really until last year or so, which now seems unbelievable. There is a phenomenon of American converts to Christianity becoming born again at first, of which I was doing, but it didn't leave me with much framework, which is needed. I appreciate your videos I've started the lessons and looking forward to them. I especially am benefiting from the Russian New Martyrs lessons as I've been trying to learn about them and what happened in Russia during that time and you seem to be the only one doing them any justice that I've found, except for the one other TH-cam channel that you reference.
    Thank you.

In the latin tridentine Mass women also have to cover the head with a veil. White for single women, black for married women. It is true you kept the traditions and the liturgy in a purer form. The modern mass in the catholic church is very protestantized. Thats why i go in the latin one as much as possible. 2hours pass and you feel it was so fast. Its a blessing

There are mantilla rules, but my most used veils are a light brown (similar to my hair colour so it blends in) and dark purple.
The Latin mass is very protestantized. Trent created the Tridentine mass to counter Protestants specifically. They made changes to attract Protestants. I was a Latin mass trad for almost a decade before converting to orthodoxy.
A low mass is thirty minutes a high mass is an hour.

Regarding not bending the knee on Sunday.... I started my Orthodox Journey in an Orthodox Church that had pews & kneelers, we knelt every Sunday on the kneelers. The only time we didn't was after Pascha for 40 days (if I recall?? I don't attend there anymore). This all seems strange in light of what you're teaching.

A few questions for those who left protestantism to go into orthodoxy, 1) why the switch?
    2) what Orthodox doctrines was hard for you accept and why did you accept it?
    3) Did you find the orthodox practices foreign/strange at first?
    4) Do you still hold certain beliefs/doctrines from protestantism and which ones?
    5) why Orthodoxy and not Catholicism or Lutheranism?
I am on rhe edge of converting to orthodox but it is very different from reformed protestantism. Not to mention i have my wife looking into this... and she's "not sold". I appreciate your time and answers. God bless.

    • @paisios2541
      @paisios2541 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

There is a degree to which God can fill in what is lacking in terms of the weakness or the laxity of the priest. If there was not some intention to not do a proper baptism and the priest maybe was nervous about dunking the child all the way or something like that then I think we could trust God to fill in for the priests weakness there. But always it is best to go and ask an experienced spiritual elder.

I used to visit an orthodox church pretty often when I lived in a city and always felt and overwhelming sense of warmth and safety, though I never attended any services. The town I have lived in for the last five years doesn't have one, but a liturgy is going to be held here the coming weekend. I'm interested in going. I was raised "culturally lutheran" and my family only went to church a few times a year. I never felt much of a connection. Now, I want to find God again. I know there's only a very small group of orthodox christians in my town and if I go to the liturgy, I'll 10000% be noticed and it makes me nervous, on top of already being nervous about trying a new thing. Any words of encouragement or experiences especially from other people who converted from lutherans?

    • @OrthodoxEthos
      @OrthodoxEthos  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

Please don’t hesitate to visit. Many Orthodox in America are converts from Lutheran and other faiths. It would be good to go and stand in the back and observe and don’t feel obligated to fit in or scared about causing any offense. If you want, you could call the priest of the parish ahead of time in case he might have some specific advice regarding attending that particular parish for the first time. Orthodox churches can differ a lot from one to another with regard to their makeup, for instance some may use very little English and be mostly comprised of people who have come from another country, while others may use mostly English and be comprised of mostly American converts with different faith backgrounds. If you don’t have a good experience at one Orthodox church, try to visit others.

They do it that way in the Catholic church, where they will dismiss the catechumens during service at a certain time, and then do their own study together. But for anyone coming to experience the Orthodox Church for the first time or second time or whenever, they need to be able to sit through it all and not be told to remove themselves during communion time. That would not welcome people, or draw people into the Orthodox Church it at all, but make them afraid, or feel rejected.

From a member of the OE Team (if you want to ask Fr. Peter directly, let us know here or reach him privately on Facebook or team@orthodoxethos.com): Classical music, being far more appropriate than "rock and other forms of psuedo-music" as Fr. Seraphim Rose refers to them, remains something lesser than ecclesiastical music. If something distracts you from prayer and turns your nous away from Christ, then put it aside. I am still learning how to apply the wisdom of the Saints on this matter, but I do believe that much benefit has come to my soul as I have almost entirely eliminated popular music from my life, only retaining occasional classical music and embracing Orthodox music/chanting. I hope this helps.

If you don't have a spiritual father in the traditional sense, prayerfully search for one. Thanks for this lecture Father Peter! 2 Questions: 1. To the sign of the cross, on older Icons we see the Saints doing the sign of the cross with their thumb together with the little finger and their third- or ringfinger.
I found that this was changed around 1650 towards the sign now in use in many dominations, due to some modernism in the church of Constantinopel, which handsign is more appropriate cause in my church both handpositions are allowed and in use?!
    2. And since when is it allowed that in churches are benches for all believers? Saw this lately in the greek orthodox church, I visited for an Icon of St. john the Baptist. We only have a few seats for the ill and sick, all other stand for 2, 3 even 4 hours and longer! We stand for our King and God, the highest and only authority on earth and in heaven, how could you sit there?

    • @OrthodoxEthos
      @OrthodoxEthos  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

The Orthodox follow the Holy Fathers, the great teachers of the Faith from the earlier apostolic times until today. When one comes and sits at their feet to learn from them as from the Apostles, as successors of the apostles, he immediately sees his total lack and weakness, and sees the modern attempts of academic theologians to understand the faith as woefully inadequate.
The Fathers teach that we have been saved by Christ - all of humanity will rise on the last day. No one will remain in the grave. Not one body will remain but all will be reunited to their soul and stand before the judgement seat.
The Fathers teach that we are being saved - most of the phrases the Lord uses - BE PERFECT… or FOLLOW ME…. - are, in Greek, continuous present. I.e. keep on following me, keep on become perfect. . . Perfection, salvation, IN CHRIST is an ongoing, ever-present, and eternal reality.
And that we WILL be saved on the last day.
And, yet, there is both an objective salvation - #1 above - and the need for a “subjective” acceptance and appropriation of the Gift. There is need for SYNERGY: man cooperates with God. He must use his free will according God’s commandments. He can, until his last moment, turn away and deny Christ, as many have done.

@@OrthodoxEthos This is helpful answer. Thank you. I certainly appreciate it. I certainty see that the majority of NT allusions to salvation are in the present and future tense.
However, I am trying to understand this teaching in a Pastoral context. If a parishioner who is living the life of the Orthodox Church, practicing prayer, fasting, and almsgiving, and pursuing holy virtues comes to a priest and says "Father, I look inward and outward and find sin in myself. I am afraid that I will not make it to the end. I feel weak and afraid of hell. Etc.. What would be the pastoral and spiritual counsel given to such a one? How and where do they derive comfort and, peace to persevere to the end to be saved (Matt 24:13)?
Please know that my question is no way seeking to be polemic or challenging. I am wanting to understand Orthodoxy not in mere doctrinal propositions but pastorally as well.
Thank you for your time. God bless.

Father, please don’t think you know what is in the heart of those who make the sign of the cross. I am 72 and have a plate and screws holding my right shoulder together……hence, I am unable to make the sign in a full and complete manner. I can assure you that I am making my cross with much love, faith, and sincerity each time. If that’s true for me, surely there are many who can’t/don’t meet with your approval, as they make their cross. Please, this kind of thinking is not befitting of a Priest.

About the story of st Anthony soul going to heaven and not having pride , that was not the point of the question the point of the question is having trust and hope that God granted us salvation.I was born into orthodoxy for decades I was able to appreciate the theology the fasts , seasons and liturgy. I would not fast Wednesdays and Fridays. I can’t stop having a coffee before going to work . I do not think that I have to give up such a simple thing thinking that God will be pleased if skip my coffee . Forgive me father ,I am struggling with the thoughts that Orthodoxy is the modern day Pharisees. The orthodox teachers have too much pride as the only true church and love to put more practices on people making the way of God and narrower. I am suffering from a pathological sense of guilt that I can not follow all these rules. I pray , fast serve and struggle with common sins and I do not see any hope that orthodoxy will lead me to a relationship with God. While the info you provided is useful . The spiritual dryness and the burden of all these rules make it hard for anybody. Also I see orthodox father with gloomy faces and icon are dark and depressing where is the joy in God . Too much works and no room for God to transform anybody. I do not know if I leave orthodoxy where I could go as all the other denominations are border line demonic with too much secularism. I wish orthodoxy was not that brutal.

Yes the sabbath is Saturday. Sunday is the Lords day. We commemorate both in the Orthodox Church. Saturday is generally focused on praying for the dead. Sunday is focused on the resurrection.

Really every day of the week has a theme. And every “hour” of the day has a theme. Also, every day of the calendar year has saints to commemorate. The Church sanctifies time by breaking it into seasons and cycles that helps keep our focus on God

Hi Father Peter I have a question. My husband and I are getting ready to be Catechumens. I was previously married and had 4 c sections and then had my tubes tied. I can’t afford to have them untied. Does that mean we aren’t supposed to have sex? Have there been any miracles in which one conceived after a tubal? Is this something I should pray for?

“I said, “You are gods, And all of you are children of the Most High. But you shall die like men, And fall like one of the princes.””
    ‭‭Psalms‬ ‭82‬:‭6‬-‭7‬ ‭NKJV‬‬
This is referring to the fallen angels, not men. It begins with “God stands in the congregation of the mighty; He judges among the gods.”
    ‭‭Psalms‬ ‭82‬:‭1‬ ‭NKJV‬‬
We can definitely say we currently are not in the congregation of their counsel.
    Then it says
Among the gods in Hebrew was understood as heavenly beings, other spirits, but our Lord was THE Lord of spirits. Thats why it says “ye are gods but you shall die like men” …
Then it says ““Arise, O God, judge the earth; For You shall inherit all nations.”
    ‭‭Psalms‬ ‭82‬:‭8‬ ‭NKJV‬‬
For in the Bible there’s often a dispute with powers and principalities, because Satan deceived mankind, God judges.
In Isaiah, it says “Those who see you will gaze at you, And consider you, saying: ‘Is this the man who made the earth tremble, Who shook kingdoms,”
    ‭‭Isaiah‬ ‭14‬:‭16‬ ‭NKJV‬‬
He’s speaking about Satan here. That when God judges the earth, man shall look at Satan and say “is this the man who shook the earth?”
Does anyone listen to Ortjodox priest podcast “THE WHOLE COUNSEL OF GOD?” - it’s good. He digs deep into theology, references, historical context, so awesome.
    God bless. Thank you.

The sign of the cross, Jesus died on the Cross, it is the sign of the faithful, and the dread of the devil, if you are a true Christian do not be fooled by the devil, the ultimate deceiver. The proper way to make the sign of the cross is to: take your Thumb, First, and Middle finger, put them together, this represents the Holy Trinity. Your ring and pinky finger should fold over, this represents both of Jesus natures, human, and divine. Now bring your fingers to your forehead, then to your belly button, then to your shoulder from Right to left. Do not be lazy when doing this, do not be ashamed, do it correct and like you mean it.
