    I agree with those who say that at $29.99 this would have been a home run product. As is, I think it’s “acceptable” but I wouldn’t pay a penny more. I hope LSS takes this feedback and improves the product.

    I loved the idea of having an easier way to introduce new players to FaB. But as you said, at this price is easier to buy a whole set of Tales of Aria blitz decks and buy sleeves for them while we're at it.

    • @Fleewood52

      It’s no different than buying 2 blitz decks. They should have included an instruction booklet instead of the lore book

    I agree that the price is too high. However, in my limited experience, the issue with the monarch (and maybe aria? Not sure, haven't played those) blitz decks was that the mechanics of each individual deck were a little too much for most new players to pick up, especially when trying to pick up the game mechanics as well at the same time. This lead to me always crushing the new player, without them ever really understanding why. I think the idea for this deck set was to use the simpler heroes from earlier in the game's history to alleviate that issue. However I may be off base here.
    Either way, not sure if I'll pick it up. 50 bucks is a bit high.

    • @blindey
      @blindey 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's how I felt. When introducing people to FaB I had 2 lines of thought: A) Only stick with the WTR heroes (Worked out well so far) with maybe a couple others. My SO chose Dash. The gf chose Ninja. I wouldn't let someone's first game be Wizard for instance. Maybe the ARC heroes too are all fine. Arcane is just "There's another type of damage that can only be blocked by arcane barrier". Not that much more complexity. But I would totally stick away from MON and TOA I feel like. B) My other thought was initially "What class would you wanna make in D&D or an RPG?" and then use that to find and equivlant. But I'm sticking mostly with A for the first game or two till they have the basics down.

    Luckily my local game shop sold this for below msrp. I mainly bought it to use as a teaching tool for any friends that are interested since both decks explain the basics very well, after that I help guide them when they want to buy a new blitz deck. I kinda wished they included some card sleeves or a deck box to kinda help the price, but overall I still like the product. It is a solid B-

    i think you nailed it. while you do get an entire introductory experience in one box, msrp is a bit too high and it seems LSS was disappointed with the way the lore booklet turned out, as well. i do hope they continue the Classic Battles product, with a few lessons learned.

    • @Fleewood52

      @@Fleewood52 an instruction booklet is vastly inferior to simply watching a 5-10 minute how to play video online, which the products do point you towards. it's a complex game and a little pamphlet couldn't cover even the basics without overloading a new player with unnecessary information.

    But it did come shipped in a bubble mailer and it was all smashed haha. Cards were fine but what if I wanted to keep it sealed? You’d think spending $40 + shipping of like $10 you’d get a small box instead of a bubble mailer from a giant company like scg.

    My personal biggest problem with this product was that i bought it, thinking it came with a little " how to play" booklet. And something to keep the cards in. I was going to just take it out at my game club and play it with whoever was interested. However there was no " how to play" information included. Here i thought this was for completely new players to the game, wanting an easy way to learn it.
    Of course it is my own fault for not waiting for reviews of the product, but still.

    I started with FaB by printing myself two starter Ira decks and learned the game with those.
    Even with just two Ira decks, learning FaB with my friends was complex just enough.
    After a while I got too familiar with Ira decks and wanted more variability, so I picked up two Uprising blitz decks, thinking I would use my knowledge from before, but there are completely new mechanics, so I feel like new player would I have to learn a lot more initially with those.
    Also, dark Monarch blitz decks seem to be a bit too hardcore in terms of art, which can be a big no no for some new players.

  • @michaelc6817
    @michaelc6817 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    A fair and balanced review. I do think the simplified decks in this product are better than the other Blitz decks for a "new" player to start with. I think it is being made loud and clear that the MSRP of $49.99 is a bit high. I think the real standard price of this product will be the $39.99 price, and at that price, LGSs are still making decent margin on the product, which they are getting for approximately $30.00.
    BTW, are you letting the silver strands in your hair begin to show? A bit older and wiser professor look?

    • @kertanos
      @kertanos 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Anything below x2 margin isn't really decent for a store, you have to make money at some point. Currently the x2 margin is at msrp. If you sell it for 40, you are still margin a bit yeah, but you can't do that with everything, else you need to sell a LOT MORE to pay rent, employees, taxes and stuff
      I will never ask any lgs to sell below msrp, and it always makes me frown when online store sell products basically for no margin, essentially working for free

    • @michaelc6817
      @michaelc6817 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kertanos $49.99 is not x2 of $30. Compare to standard booster boxes of MTG. LGSs pay approximately $80 per box, which is dependent on the distributor they get it from and the size of the orders. But, for easy math, let's keep it at $80. They sell that booster box for $90 to $100, at most probably $110. Never would they be selling it for $160, unless something crazy has happened. Understand that card shops make money on quantity and singles. Sealed product margins are very thin. FAB products typically have a significantly lower cost to LGSs than a similar MTG product, so the LGS can sell it for less and still make better % margins. Need another example? LGSs pay about $17 for a MTG prerelease kit at qty. They sell it for $25. Many discount from that price. So, x2 is generally not realistic for sealed card product. This isn't sports cards yet, lol! Another example??? MTG collector boxes cost the LGS approximately $185. They sell it for $210. Let's say they get them for $150 (Not even sure Rudy gets a price that good). Their margin is no where near 100%.

    As a sealed/standalone product this is the first major whiff from LSS. There have been reports of damaged cold foils and equipment from players as well. I would agree that as a "learn to play" introductory product a price point around $20 seems pretty reasonable, but even then the Brute side of the duel decks is really uninspired. The collector in me wants the special hero treatments and Glistening Steelblade, but even at like $30 I'd rather just buy some singles or crack some packs or buy some supplies.

    I know this video is almost a year old, but I feel the need to comment. I must just be bad at this game, but I am still new to it. When I and my friend played these decks (just today) against each other, Rhinar smashed face. Dorinthea could get in a few good hits, but Rhinar swinging for 6+ every turn was hard to deal with. Maybe we just need to get better at assessment on defence.

  • @FSTL0613
    @FSTL0613 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    A few things that hasn't been mentioned in the video, regarding Monarch and Tales of Aria Precons (TL;DR at the end):
    - While Monarch or Tales of Aria precons are indeed a better bang for the buck product, some of those precons now contains banned/errataed cards, which means you may not be able to bring those out of the box and play competitive events at your LGS.
    - They also are a bit more complex, mechanics and gameplay wise, so the learning curse will be steeper compared to the Classic Battle decks. Dori and Rhinar' s decks are built with a more precise gameplan to understand and follow but a equipment loadouts are also more relevant.
    TL;DR - if you are new player:
    If you want the better learning/teaching tool regardless of price point or something you can bring out of the box at your LGS to play in sanctioned events, go with Classics Battles.
    If you want a cheaper way to dip your toes into the game and don't mind a steeper learning curve plus having to buy a few commons to make your deck playable in sanctioned events, go with Monarch/Tales of Aria precons

      @atalhlla 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I definitely recommend asking someone in that community to take you through an introductory blitz game! If I had to relate it to MTG I’d say it’s going to first feel like like two spell slinger decks squaring off face to face with direct burn (attacks) and damage prevention (defense + defense reactions), and it only gets more interesting and varied from there, with for instance Guardian tending to be control-then-smash, Mechanologist being ramp/engine+aggro, Ranger being aggro or control+aggro, etc. It can’t hurt to look up the different heroes to see what one might appeal to you right off the bat, but nothing beats that face-to-face introduction!

    My biggest disappointments with this boxset for "beginners" is no deckboxes or any other way to keep the cards organized after you open them, and NO rulebook. This reminds me of the old Duel Decks series from MtG. That was very hit and miss, and generally got worse as time went on. I suppose this has the benefit that the decks are technically playable in the competitive formats, but it looks like they're going to have all the same problems. A handful of chase rares to entice collectors, but overall little value and overpriced for what you get.

      The singles are still worth more of the price of the product, in MTG you usually get 0.1 rares and 0.5 mythics as the " valuable" cards of the each product

    I’m not suprised rhinar is more expensive than dori…this is a worse version of dori. You can actually use rhinar so its not a useless cold foil

    established fab player here! agree that the blitz decks are a much better deal. this really is quite expensive for what it is, so if you want to get into the game, simply just get some monarch or aria blitz decks

    thanks! i am an established fab player and a collector and 29.99 seems like a fair price to me. if walk away with the decks after paying that, i d probably feel oke. until the price drops to anywhere near that, it s a hard pass for me.

    This product is full of strange decisions.
    Why a dori retrain but nothing for Rhinar?
    Why a new specialisation that's a must have for Dori with new reactions that are a must have for Dori as well but then an alpha rampage reprint for rhinar and some middling cards?
    Cards like dodge and toughen up are comically bad, and why isn't dodge a yellow 3? At least it'd block dori's attack reactions.
    Also questionable production quality

    Oddly enough, I would be getting this not just for the decks but also the playmat for the other blitz decks in my collection. It's kind of hard to teach the game, if the first 7 blitz decks don't come with a layout for new players. I wish it were to come with a a basic rulebook inside, but most TCGs are going the online rulebook approach these days. I also think that $40 might be the best MSRP for this product these days, but htat might be my years of Magic the Gathering experience showing with an eye towards the Duel decks for comparison.

    I'm someone who has been interested in getting into FaB, but the Blitz decks never felt inviting enough. When I saw this video, I was really excited at the idea of this product. But like you said, I'm not about to drop $50 on an introduction to a game I'm unfamiliar with. If this was $30, I'd probably do it, but $20 and I'd buy it instantly. But I'm new to the game, so the foiling, the full arts, the chase cards, they all mean nothing to me, so I'm not going to pay through the nose for them.

    Great video Professor! 100% agree with your review; hearing the advertised lore book and playmat inclusions definitely created a very different image in my mind for what was going to be offered, especially for $50. Love FAB but yeah, this product was a miss.

  • @starnik

    Sort of hilarious to hear $50 is overpriced for a Flesh and Blood product after coming from Magic, where people are easily dropping more money on their products. When you started by saying it was "really expensive" my mind was already going to $100-$150 like the Secret Lair Commander Deck.

    • @TangibleTravis
      @TangibleTravis 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Expensive is expensive regardless of other content. Besides, this and Secret Lair products are for different customers.

      The closest mtg equivalent would be duel decks when they existed, and those were $20 to $30 each. So in comparison $50 for an intro product is fairly hefty. Even a commander precon is less nowadays and actually has more cards at 100 compared to 80.

    • @Xoulrath_
      @Xoulrath_ 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Magic has a guaranteed track record of ROI. Flesh and Blood doesn't. It's also far easier to sell Magic cards than it is to sell any other card game, save Pokemon chase stuff.
      Legend Story Studios has overpriced FAB since the beginning. You can't make your product as expensive as an established card game like Magic, and expect to attract new players in droves. They catered to the collector/investor crowd, and the game suffered for it.

    • @Xadrian1000
      @Xadrian1000 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Xoulrath_ That's also false. Flesh and Blood is not more expansive than Magic or any other TCG (if you don't believe me, just watch the Professor videos about this topic).

    • @Xoulrath_
      @Xoulrath_ 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Xadrian1000 I've played the game. I've spent money on it. I've priced out tournament decks. They were ABSOLUTELY pushing $1K in price. I can buy into a decent Modern deck for that in Magic. I can spend half that and get a top tier Pioneer deck. Were I so inclined to play Standard, and I'm not, I could buy into the latest best decks for between $200-$300 depending on the whims of the market.
      That deck that I priced for FAB was a Chane deck. It was a year ago. It was after the ban of whatever that card was called. To play the BEST Chane deck, it was pushing $1K. One of the Equipment alone was like $200, for ONE card.
      So maybe do yourself a favor and I don't assume that I'm just making things up. I can't speak to the price of the game as of today, because I gave up on the game a year ago and never looked back. But I'd be very surprised to find out that all of a sudden these pricey Legendary and Mythic cards dropped so low in price that competitive decks can be had for less than a few hundred. And even then, it is still as expensive as Magic Standard decks are, which is the most fair comparison really.
      If you're counting $12 Blitz decks, that are VERY limited in their card offerings and playability (the Chane deck is trash after the ban), then you're doing it wrong. The cost of a deck, when people talk about decks, is what a tournament legal, proven deck will cost you. You seem to be leaving that out, and it's actually really important. I can honestly say that I can build a deck in Magic, for an expensive format like Vintage, for say, $20. But it won't actually be competitive at all. Therefore it doesn't make Vintage affordable.

    The box set is banging but needs to be half the price! Far too expensive to recommend to actual new players as opposed do making commoner decks (even if the format is a briar fest)

  • @izzy8371

    I believe they could add some better cards. For example Raging Onslaught could be replaced with Wounded Bull cause it has an effect that is way better than nothing.
    Some cards from Dorinthea give only a go again. They could add some others that give plus damage.
    I think the price is because the foil equipment and Glistering Steelblade that if you use it with the old Dorinthea and her Dawnblade it can be an extremely aggro deck. Or En Garde could be replaced with Sharpen Steel. Gives 3 damage and has zero cost.
    I don't think players will appriciate rainbow foil equipment. They look good but i remember when i started playing it was my very first TCG and i would give money to get better cards than just foil to look good in terms of aesthitic. So i agree with that part.
    So what i want to say is that yes, it's a kinda good set to learn the game if you uprade with some other commons and rares but should worth less by removing rainbow foil treatement.
    Considering all these i dont think i will get that set. My main hero is Dorinthea and i might give money for just Glistering Steelblade in single so that is only :/
    But i'm sure the next one will be better because they will probably listen to our feedbacks.
