    Amazing video! Nothing like this existed before in video format. The only thing that was not covered is the pronunciation of words like μια and μυαλό.

    Around 6:00 with the "hidden consonant" discussion, the linguistic term for this is "Palatalization" because the sound of those consonants shifts towards the palate (center of the roof of the mouth).

    Thank you! This is an excellent video, and I'm very relieved to discover that I am not crazy, there actually are cases when the combinations are pronounced in different ways, depending... on so many things!
    I am only on my 27th day of trying to learn Greek from scratch using duolingo and easy greek, and I am still far away from being able to pronounce any of this correctly, I'm still painstakingly struggling with the alphabet, but it is good to know that one day will come when I can start to apply your tips.

      Thanks for the positive feedback! In that case I recommend that you check out the first part I did in which I break down the pronunciation basics for beginners!

    Interesting video, thank you 🙏🏻 I’m learning lots. I think it adds to the richness of language to know this. I can always find something that is helpful to me specifically.
    Also, I thought what you said about the sounds being unconscious for native greek people was significant because it reminds me of how much we can absorb by hearing.

    I don't know this guy, but I think he is very sympathetic! Greek people tell me, that my pronounciation is finde and I shouldn't worry about it, so this isn't really my concern, but nevertheless I really enjoyed this video and his pace of talking!

      Don't use 'sympathetic' in this context. In German, you say "sympathisch", in French "sympathique " for being nice - in English "sympathetic" means something altogether different, more like being 'empathetic' - you feel for somebody else's problem/difficult situation this word is a FALSE FRIEND !

    Well that was interesting thx. I did wonder why sounds like ng as in άγγελος aren't always pronounced that way.
    I do think I personally prefer it if it is 😅 Cuz it makes the etymology a bit easier to understand and remember in relation to my own language. But good to know it's more common in Athenian dialects.
    Never thought much of παραλία being para-li-a and not *par-alja. Probably because Dutch pulls those sorts of things all the time as well xD

    • @EasyGreekVideos
      @EasyGreekVideos  2 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Happy you found the video useful! Careful: παραλία has the accent on the iota so it’s pronounced i-a, whereas παράλια, like εμβόλια, are exceptions to the rule of unstressed λια being pronounced lja.

    • @CitizenMio
      @CitizenMio 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@EasyGreekVideos
      Oh dear, paralia has an accent twin too?😅 I mostly know everyone's favourite insult and to maybe avoid saying things are soft just in case xD
      What does παρáλia mean then? It's hard to look up as google assumes I'm looking up beach instead. One source says it means "parity", but it doesn't translate that way the other way around.
      I did gloss over a bit by the time I got to that segment as, as warned, it's very advanced pronunciation and my general level is not that advanced. So I just watched that segment a dozen times more. If I got that right the trick is that the exception still applies despite the accent not being on iota?
      So εμβόλιο ending in li-o and not -lja. Which google translate gets wrong then, but that's not surprising and I take its translations and pronunciations with a pinch of salt anyway.
      Occasionally helpful in a hurry and if I can understand and rebuild the rest of a sentence, but not to be trusted otherwise.
      Anyway, that would mean παραλία and παρáλia share the same pronunciation? Both ending in -li-a and not -lja. With the latter word being a hidden exception.
      Did I get that right?

    Γεια. Όταν άκουσε το σχόλιο σου ότι ο ήχος /k/ και /g/ αλλάζει στα Ιταλικά μετά από /e/ και /i/, στο ίδιο τρόπο με τα Ελληνικά, ήμουν έκπληκτος, αλλά λίγο αργότερα μου είπα «σωστά». Όμως η αλήθεια δεν είναι έτσι κατά την άποψή μου, γιατί στα Ιταλικά μπορείς να βρεις 'ce/ge' και 'che/ghe', δηλαδή τους δύο ήχοι, αφού στα Ελληνικά έχει μόνο έναν ήχο από τα δύο γράμματα. Αυτός ο διαφορετικός ήχος είναι τότε ένα αλλόφωνο. Συμφωνείς;

      I know this episode was rather tough... As I mentioned in the video as well, this video is a bit more advanced. If you're just starting out I wouldn't worry about it too much right now, you can come back to this video later. Is there anything in particular I could help you with or clarify for you?

    • @flexparachute
      @flexparachute วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Yes it is, specially in the beginning. Greek phonology is hard but it can be mastered. Also, this is a video for more advanced sounds and patterns so if you are in the beginning, you can skip it.
      The good thing is that Greeks are amazing when it comes to music so you can listen to the way they pronounce the words in a more clear way. You can use their music because when they sing, they tend to pronounce the sounds more clearly, compared to when they speak because Greeks speak fast and the phonology couldn't be heard so much for the untrained ear. I personally recommend older Greek music (not folklore music because there you go in dialects territory which is it's own can of worms) for that exercise. It is also fun! What I was doing personally is that I was listening to the songs together with the lyrics and I was memorizing how exactly the words sound. I was also repeating them as they were sang by the artists themselves. After some time I started analyzing the sounds and started to hear the patterns myself. This exercise helped me a lot to understand the sounds and the musicality of the Greek language.
      The reason why I mention this is because the singers were overpronouncing the phonemes because of the limitations of the recording technology at the time. I don't recommend younger artists like Greek rappers or trappers because they tend to mumble which is not good for learning Greek phonology since they follow a global musical trend that has been around in the last 10 something years. With some trial and error, you will learn and eventionally you will start to hear the small hidden χ in the word "ποιος" and many many more.

    Θα ήταν πολύ βοηθητικό αν έφτιαχνες έναν πίνακα που να συγκεντρώνει όλες αυτές τις περιπτώσεις και τις συνθήκες που τις διέπουν. Το λέω φιλικά ως γλωσσομαθής και όχι επικριτικά. Σε κάποια φάση ανέφερες για τα -ι- και -ε- που παίζουν έναν ρόλο στην προφορά. Παρόλο που είμαι Έλληνας, δεν το ήξερα. Το ίδιο φαινόμενο υπάρχει για τα -i- και -e- στα ισπανικά, όταν βρίσκονται μετά από g, c των οποίων η προφορά αλλάζει. Ενδιαφέρον!

      Σε ευχαριστώ για το σχόλιο! Το σκέφτηκα αυτό που λες αλλά δεν μπόρεσα να βρω έναν τρόπο να απεικονίσω όλα αυτά στον πίνακα.
      Μόνο να εξηγήσω όλους τους ήχους της φωνητικής αλφαβήτου μου πήρε 40 λεπτά αν μετρήσεις και τα δύο βίντεο και πάλι ίσως είναι ακόμα λίγο δύσπεπτες οι πληροφορίες 😅
      Πάντως θα το λάβω υπόψη, ίσως μπορέσω να το ξαναδουλέψω σε ένα μελλοντικό βίντεο.
      Χάρηκα που σου φάνηκα χρήσιμο το βίντεο και ως Έλληνας!

      Γι'αυτό και ανέφερα στο βίντεο ότι πρόκειται για προχωρημένη φωνολογία για να τελειοποιήσει κανείς τη προφορά του. Όσο ανεβαίνει ο πήχης, τόσο περιπλέκονται και τα πράγματα 😅
