Hi! Another great video 🙏🏻 I’m having a lot of fun and really enjoying exploring the language. I’m trying to do a little bit of everything and making sure I enjoy it which for me is key! The ending was the best 😂 I was actually thinking you might fall off midway through it but it was saved until the end!
I have visited different Greek Islands since I was 15. First time in 2013 to Zakynthos for a family holiday. This year we went to Crete in September, and after about 4 years being away from Greece I just felt so happy to be back in Greece. As soon as we got off the plane and walked into the airport it just felt like a homely feeling. But on this Holiday I had a lot more interest in the culture and wanted to get to know the Greek people. I just wanted to meet some younger Greek people around my age (26) and ask them about their life. But being a family holiday you can't really go off and do your own thing so much. In one of the tourist shops there was this beautiful Greek girl who worked there, and of course she was friendly as you'd expect from most Greeks. I know it's a bit cringe, the English guy sees a Greek girl and falls in love lol... But that's not what I am getting at. She spoke English, but not a lot. And we talked a bit but a lot was obviously lost because of her limited understanding of English. And after I came home I thought this was sad. And I thought to myself "why don't I have a go at learning Greek?". The point that I am trying to get at is me explaining that it was disappointing that my communications were limited with the Greek people. Not because I want to chat up lovely Greek ladies lol So since then I have been learning the language on TH-cam. But after a couple months I feel a bit stuck and have lost motivation a little bit. Which is a shame! I really want to continue progressing, but it can feel a little daunting at points, when you have to search for quality learning content yourself and also put in the time to learn/study also. I was doing fine and really enjoying it, but suddenly i just started to feel overwhelmed and kinda fell away from it a little 😔 i want to be reinvigorated! I learnt the alphabet very fast and all the vowel/consonant combinations, obviously i know a few words. I have learned about the cases, the definitive article, genders, the verbs είμαι, είσαι, είναι.. etc .. and learnt the personal pronouns εγώ, εσύ, αυτός etc... started learning the possessive pronouns such as μου, της etc but got a bit discouraged. Also I have learnt more than this along the way. But the drive to keep going has faded a little. My biggest struggle is the lack of content for practising what you know. There appears to be quite an abundance of basic explanations and simple teachings of what things are and what things mean, but I want to be able to have practice exercises for the subject or section I am working on. I suppose this is why people pay for personal tuition! Haha This is the first time attempting to learn a new language! So I am very inexperienced.
I think the best way to initially learn a language is to have one on one lessons. You might need that for the first several months. Watching tv is great in addition, but you won’t learn the correct root meanings of words that way. I don’t think group lessons are helpful unless you have a solid base of a language first.
