0:08 "GPD win 4 here" XD it's a slip up!
Imagine I said win mini 😅
Top notch content. Thanks.
I appreciate that 👍🏽
What do you want to see next?
@@BarelyAverageDude I'd love to see a guide on the GamePP overlay if you can. And if you have the games, some Overwatch 2, Black Desert Online and Valheim benchmarks would be awesome.
I think of anything above about 20w on these CPUs as more of a desktop mode thing.
You're going to be GPU limited on these APUs even if you lock the CPU down to below base clocks. However, if you connect a GPU to it via the oculink port, giving the CPU 28w can help it keep boosting higher for longer in CPU bound situations.
I agree. 18-22w is probably the highest you want to go in handheld mode.
Any higher and you’re wasting battery and heat for 1-2 fps
great vid
GPD is expected to improve the cooling for 2024 8840U Win Mini. I have high hopes for that model.
How much better?
@@BarelyAverageDude no idea. They issued a statement on the 2024 models which included the Win Mini.
They said "Major Hardware Update" on the Mini, so yeah, high hopes is what we have 🤞
@@kadash977 I believe it will be cooling related as that's the biggest issue with the Mini. A VRR display would be great as well but I'm not getting my hopes up.
I have a ally now only reason i habent gotten the win4 or win mini is because they dont have vrr screen if the win4 gets 120hz vrr with a 8840u i might buy me a gpd
Gdp win mini is just so beautiful
Is it worth getting one of these (GPD win mini) if you own the SD OLED?
Having an integrated keyboard, having windows natively you can play the anti-cheat games, probably also better for non gaming stuff like working etc?
Depending on what games you play the Win Mini is definitely a good option over the Steam Deck. And yeah if you are looking to play anti-cheat games this is obviously much better.
@@BarelyAverageDude thank you, I own the SD OLED sold my LCD, think it is amazing. Just also like the idea of these super small pc’s with gaming controls and in a clamshell design!
80c is not hot for these cpus, they are designed to run into the 90s. But above 20w for the small gains its not worth it without the cooling mod.
Yeah I mentioned it’s not too hot for the internals, but it’s not the most comfortable experience when holding it. The grips definitely help
Cooling mod?
U need good cooling for them to handle 30 watts and still keep cool and deliver i think the ally does the best job squeezing the preformance out only disadvantage it has is the 6400 mt ram instead the 7500
@DoubleDrastik but what kind of cooling mods are their? I'm considering buying the win mini so I'm trying to get all the info I can
@@jrpvp-2573 im not sure bro the mods aren’t really in abundance. Id say pick the right handheld for your needs for me i just want a gaming by machine that is cheap easy obtainable and powerful so i went for the ally because the form/ the 120hz vrr screen and the 30 watt tdp and silent cooling/ but if u need something thats more versatile id say the win mini is good just dont expect to much high refresh rate gaming on new titles your prolly only gonna hit 60fps stable . So for example my ally can hit 80 stable in fortnite dx12 low graphs epic viewing but it looks amazing. My screen can give 80 fps but steady 60 would be good to but its not what i want i want the higher fps because i play competitive. My advice is not pushing the machines to much. I know from the ally the fan never spins 100% the system is set to 80 or so but u can put 100 but i dont know if the gpd has that headroom. Like barely average dude said the GPD win mini is known to get warm on the touch so the grips help but it doesn’t change the fact it gets hot it just makes it gaming more comfortable these device’s aren’t really made to be tweeked
I have gpd win 2 and there are moments where it feels very hot when playing.
Please tell me when playing cyberpunk for more than an hour, how hot do your hands feel? Is it really comfortable, and when you charge the battery while playing, do you feel more heat when you touch it or does it stay the same?
It gets hot, but never too hot to hold. I don't notice it getting hotter when charging.
Great video. But can you share overlay setting of your win mini. Mine not show current tdp :(
I’m using an overlay called GamePP (plus plus)
Ayaneo may be the coolest device that pushes TDP, but it's having a 60hz panel, which is just a deal breaker
60hz is still great on a handheld. It's almost impossible to run AAA games above 60fps and all the less demanding games are locked at 60 and perfectly smooth. Yeah, more FPS is better, but 60 isn't 30. 🤷🏽♂️
Im curious if emulation makes a difference. Especially ps3. It really eats CPU usage compared to the normal pc game
Which overlay you are using on mini? Can i have a link please?)
It's called "Game Plus plus"
www.gamepp.com/download-details/
@@BarelyAverageDude thanks for answer ) gonna try it )
You also gotta compare the size and weight aspect of the two different machinesw. Also its really not that hot unless if you got the older beta model cuz my win mini doesnt get over 72c on 30w playing gta5
How are you playing at 30w?
@@BarelyAverageDude there is a custom setting, and you can set it in BIOS
But they only changed the metal cover they did not change the cooling. Are you sure it only gets to 72c
@@cindiemasi yes at 30w u hardly feel the heat on your hands it could be that my room is always so cold I never used it in a hot environment
Thank you for the video i was almost going to buy the mini but the fan noise and tempo Are a no go
whats more comfortable to play with gpd win 4 or win mini???
They're both pretty bad to me but probably the Win Mini. BUT the controller is much better on the Win 4 so it's a tie😅🤷🏽♂️
I put a grip on both
How does one get this update to unlock the tdp

You have to change the ram speed to 7500MT in the Mini bios or you're just wasting power. Its base setting is 6400MT. There is a few other settings that need to change as well. But we all digress here you are comparing the lightest compact handheld on the market with a 7" display. Its lighter than most 6" handhelds. That Kun is overkill for a 7840u, and should have come with a full 7940HS for the money and for it's thermal capabilities.
I did change RAM speed to 7500. Notice how the performance of the first test matches the other device which is also 7500mt/s.
A 7940HS would be worse because it’s not very good at the wattages that make sense on these handhelds. AYANEO actually addressed that very point
I wonder how long a 64/4 Kun would hold up and still be relevant…. 5-10 years?
@@Caba-Rojo It will hold up as long as the battery is still good. The 64Gb or RAM doesn't really help improve gaming because the iGPU always maxes out before the RAM does. If games in the future are more optimized than the Kun could have a good lifespan, but devs don't seem to care about optimization anymore 🤷🏽♂️
@@BarelyAverageDude but doesnt 64 mean u can give alot more vram to the gpu ?
@@DoubleDrastik past a certain point (around 10gb) giving more Vram to the GPU doesn't improve performance. If the GPU is at 100% more VRAM won't help.
So without this secret update u can’t go to 28 at all? Even if it’s plugged in?
Correct. The 20w limit is at the BIOS level. It doesn't matter if you are plugged in or even if you set higher with software
@@BarelyAverageDude do u have any hints on where to download it I can’t find it. I get mine tomorrow so I’m doing homework now

Could you maybe make a video about which compact handheld is best to buy if the steam deck is to big? Thank you
The GPD win 4 is probably one of the best
Change ram speeds to 7500mhz....20w+ takes advantage of that .
Also : if i can slap a 400g copper heatsink+ fan to compensate the weight of the kun im pretty sure i can run the mini at lower temperatures 😂😂😂😂🤷♀️🤷♀️🤷♀️
RAM speed was changed to 7500, notice how the first test matches the other device which is also 7500mhz.
Ram speed could be changed in the bios even before 28w was unlocked. That was the first thing I did when I got the Win Mini 👍🏽
Sorry, but I fail to understand the point...? Different tools for different jobs, why even compare the two?
I also fail to understand the point of these big handhelds to begin with. I mean, if I wanted sheer graphical prowess I would just play on an XSX, PS5, or a desktop PC, these handhelds are meant for pick-up-and-play sessions and backlog chasing, I would mostly play 'em at the lowest TDP possible for noise, heat and battery life, anyway
These test are about showing what’s possible. You don’t have to run it at a high TDP, but the option is there. 👍🏽
@@BarelyAverageDude Yeah I get that, but you'll mainly get a hot lava stone in your hands. Maybe good for the winter lol 😄
@@megaloth1955lol it’s always winter somewhere. But yeah I don’t suggest 28w on the Mini for 98.47% of use cases
hi
Hello 👋
Those Handheld devices are becoming great niche Tech for Digital Artists and 2D / 3d Modeling Designers... Maybe the Kun could implement Stylus support for next Alteration...🤓🧐🥸🤯
