In the Air Force, I flew with my father's Hamilton A-11 watch my entire career and had it rebuilt several times over the years, but I will say the last few years I was flying bombers most of the aircrews were wearing G-Shocks and I will admit it is a damn good watch, I would say almost a perfect watch, it is tough and reliable. Right now I wear a Casio Duro because I gave my A-11 to my son when he graduated from Air Force pilot training.

I love Hamilton’s. My first suit watch was a Hamilton which was a gift from my brother. It was the Hamilton Jazzmaster, he also got me a gshock so I could wear the rugged Gshock when I was going biking, hiking or camping and I could wear the Hamilton on dates, or interviews. Hamiltons and G-shocks are two Must-haves for any young man just starting out.

I wouldn’t call them a “starter watch”. What they are, are watches that are as accurate as it gets, and are more durable than anything else on the market. They may not have the cool factor of a high end automatic, but inasmuch as telling time, and being bombproof (metaphorically speaking) they are the cream of the crop. But they do have their own Kryptonite: bug spray with DEET.

I’m quite new in the watch collecting scene, and I wasn’t really a G-Shock guy, but took the plunge on an affordable entry-level black CasiOak a few months ago. It wasn’t getting much wrist time till it became a trusted companion when I spent weeks moving flats, and building Ikea furniture, and moving boxes, and drilling walls… ever since, it gained a special place in my collection.

Why G-Shock? 1. Because they allow you to assemble a collection on a budget. 2. They are respected all over the world 3. They are tough as nails 4. They keep incredibly accurate time 5. They come in an infinite number of styles, sizes, and colors to meet any occasion. 6. They are fun! 7. There are many G-Shocks groups where members can sell/trade 8. They are easy to service 9. They are widely available 10. Because good value never goes out of style.

My first watch was a GShock Gw6900 I'd bought for lifeguarding in college . Got me into watches and the entire game. I'm wearing my Casioak right now with a modded bezel and it still serves as my everyday beater among my various budget automatics. It is a true testament to the quality available for such an accessible price and still with such provenance in the field.

Casio is such an amazing brand. I'm planning on getting a Casio Duro and modifying it (replacing the glass with sapphire glass and replacing the band with a stainless steel bracelet). Essentially, I would theoretically be able to get a watch that runs on Japanese quartz, that just so happens to be of 200m water resistance and a watch that is supposed to be relatively durable thanks to the sapphire glass. All for the low price of roughly 80 USD.

Theoretically I should be able to get a Casio Duro with sapphire and a stainless steel strap for 49.33 USD 😂.

My grail watch is actually the G-Shock GWG2000 Mudmaster. It is so advanced that the hands actually move out of the way when you want to access certain functions to make it easier to read said functions. How many other watches can do this? The number of complications on this G-Shock is just amazing. By the way, please make a video of quartz watches with sick complications. I don't think there's another video out there on this so this content would definitely be unique. Thanks

I had a analogue looking Festina years ago that could do that. It had a small dial with a small hand at the 6 o clock position that indicated which mode you were in, had 2 Alarms, a countdown, stopwatch, second timezone, a setting for calibrating the hands and the last function i can't remember. and the hands moved the shortest way to the next function (so not always clockwise but both ways).
It also was very durable. But getting watchstraps for it every 2 years and no indication for when the battery died was what made me go look for something else. And what sealed it's "death" was that there were no replacement seals available anymore. (when the watch was 9 years old)
A big advantage with G-shocks (or digital watches in general) is that you notice when the battery gets low. (My Festina just stopped wihtout warning. It ran precise until it stopped every 3 years and i hated that)
I bought a G-Shock as replacement in 2007 and still have it (it still runs on it's first "10 years" battery!) But it gets very few wrist time as i switched to a mechanical watch. (a mechanical watch also never stops out of nowhere, and i like the thought that my handmovements are enough to power the watch and it needs no battery)
But the G-shock still gets used as alarm clock each day.

    • @philm94
      @philm94 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I love my GWG2000 but do look at the 9400 rangeman as well if you just want the functions. For around half the price it does it all, and it's easier to use as you don't need to fiddle with the screw down crown to adjust settings. That said the GWG2000 is a beauty to look at and spends a lot of time on my wrist.

Got into collecting a couple years ago and bought my first ever mechanical watch (had a couple no name $15 watches when I was a teenager), a Seiko Recraft SNKN37. Loved it! ...then it got scratched while wearing it at work(I do roadside assistance change flat tires/replace batteries etc)🤦 Bought a G-shock the next day! Greatest work watch ever! The hourly chime helps keep the time in my head. The alarm reminds me when to sign on/off. The auto light helps since I work at night. Just turn my wrist to check the time and it lights up without me having to push a button. Solar powered, so I never need batteries. Just set it in the window when I get off work. I don't keep my phone on me when helping customers so when doing paperwork, I have the date readily available without having to grab my phone. All these tiny little advantages really add up day after day.

Teddy, I can vouch for the toughness of G-Shock watches. I had the original in the early-mid 1980s when I was in the US Navy; I can't remember if it was the DW5000, but it was that shape. I was NOT easy on that watch! I used it for manual labor, working with air tools, handling missiles, standing watch, snorkeling, surfing, etc. It was dropped in paint, cleaned off with solvent, etc. NOTHING could kill that watch; whatever punishment I dished out to it, it came back for more! I've been a fan of the brand ever since. I now have a G7900, a GA1000, and a GA140; my next acquisition will be the GA100. I CAN'T WAIT to get it! Great video.
Wanted to add that the Casioak GA-2100 is a great watch to mod.
You can put the internals into a full metal body, from black, to steel, to rose gold (colour),.
Chang the hour marker ring (maybe adding one with lume, or just more fun colours).
Or, if you are comfortable doing so, changing the dial, and hands.
The dials out there work with the ga-2100, ga-2110, and ga-m2100.
They will fit the ga-b2100, with the tough solar, and Bluetooth, but as of now, have yet to see any with the correct markings on the dial.
The ga-2100 has M, T, W ..S on the left for week days. The ga-b2100 does not use that area for the days.
One last thing, some people find the white text on the black digital display hard to read.
There are some models with black text on white, and if your eyes are not great, maybe worth looking at images of both, to see if you need one of those.

I would like to thank my father for introducing me to G-Shocks. As a kid that time I wasn't all that excited by it because it looked so big for my small wrist. Fast forward through the years it lasted more than my other watches the durability and its ruggedness it survived my kid years and early adulthood. I still keep and use my first G-Shock and people are intrigued it looks old and been through a lot but it still works as good as the day it was bought. Over a decade of use and still very tough Casio makes them very well.

I've bought couple of GShocks over the years, the one has the most wrist time is my CasiOak GAB2100. It checked all the boxes for what I need like it's thin for a GShock, tough solar, bluetooth & a bright LED. Having a multiband 6 is cool & all, but from where I live, it's next to impossible to find a signal. So bluetooth will do for me. As for LED, most Ana-Digi GShock light under $200 are as anemic. Could barely see the time in the dark. GAB2100 on the other hand has one of the brightest LED.

I’ve had two G-Shocks in my life. My best compliment I can give them is they are incredibly durable and tough. I wear mine when I know I’m doing something active and I don’ t want to subject my nicer watches to scrapes and scratches (think a trip to Universal Studios).

I found your video very interesting. After wearing and owning 2 smart watches, it came to a point what I realized that I didn’t need the additional hassle of having to charge and having to deal with buzzing notifications, every three seconds, I realized I did not need my email or my text on my watch. Back in 2021 I bought my first GA 2100. That was my pathway to becoming a G-Shock lover I own now, six of them. I have two of my dailies and four others for special events . I do get many compliments from people who are not used to seeing these watches in the world smart watches. But most of all I have realized that I don’t have to worry about him. I do not have to be careful. I do not have to charge them and it doesn’t matter if they get scratched, it doesn’t I don’t have to take it off, ever not even when I’m washing the dishes. I don’t have to take it off at all. The gym, at work, the pool, working on the backyard, working on my car, running, biking, hiking. It can withstand it all. I love them. I do not feel the need to buy a watch that is thousands of dollars that I’m not even going to wear because I’m afraid it will get scratched or hurt.

Again another great video ! I have owned a G-Shock since 1988, I have never been let down by one, i have never been "snobbed" wearing one, i believe i would laugh out loud if i was :)
I have put my G-Shocks through military way of life ( very hard living ) construction ( almost abusive way of life ) and when members of the watch community assigns the title to Casio as GOD tier, i could not agree more.
Yes i also feel watch collectors would be amiss if they don't have at least one G-Shock. My G-Shocks are my daily drivers, admittedly they do not "patina" like an old Rolex or Omega, but they do show hard wear pretty well. I have an older 6900 that has some excellent scars, it's seen more action than most.

Had the basic $40 square for years. Used it to time starts in sailboat racing and also as a general beater watch. Eventually the strap started to crack so I decided to upgrade. After snooping around the net I built a MR-G clone for ~$300 - solar, multiband 6, titanium case and bracelet. Now I can't hardly get it off my wrist. So light and comfortable. Classic chunky G-shock look in the dull luster of titanium. I very much like it.

I'm currently wearing a Casioak with the light grey hands and numerical markers. Really good watch. The color makes it really easy to read in all light conditions. I think it's a Japanese exclusive color but Amazon has it. It doesn't have solar but that's fine.
I have some other watches that are nicer but those are reserved for when I'm going out and want to be more presentable. If I'm around the house or at work then a Gshock is my go to because I don't have to worry about it. I have the Casioak, and two LCD digital models with solar. Ones a 5600 variant and one had an aesthetic that just screamed 90s to me so I had to get it.

i bought one in 86 at the px at FLW. it went through basic, ait, dli (luxury), air assault school, arctic warfare school, and 'the army' for 4 years. it followed the dead for a few months after i got out. i replaced the battery and strap once each. it was abused. hell, it loaded trailers and worked on the air ramp at UPS. it died in the mid 90's. 10 years of absolute and complete unrelenting abuse. i wore it playing golf from the mid 80's too. quite a shock to the watch as well! i had a couple of other watches so didnt replace it. but, i was sad. my friend died. i'll confess, i took it to the local guy to fix it, he just shook his head. i still have it in a drawer with medals and concert tickets and such.
well, now i'm older, more successful, have a couple omegas and some other nice pieces...but what would round out the collection? a G. thanks, teddy. i strapped it on today and all of that came rushing back.

I have been buying and using G-Shock watches for some years. Great value for the cost. I tend to buy the higher end of the G-Shock. My preference is for the solar watches. This way, as long as the watch is exposed to light it keeps going. No battery change to worry about. Since the last 6 to 8 years the G-Shock watches have had great advancements for the price. They have many great models below $100. My preference in the low cost ones are the ones that are in the hard resin type case. In the higher end ones the case is made with a type of metalized carbon resin case. One of my favourites is the GWG-2000. The Mud Man and Gravity Master watches are among the ones that are excellent for all purposes.
I have some expensive Swiss mechanical and quartz watches. I always have to be very careful how I wear them and my activity with them. These types need maintenance about every 4 to 5 years, and this is costly. If one of these Swiss watches are damaged from rough wearing, the repair cost can be a lot more than a decent G-Shock.

Other Favs are the dual analog/digital display models like the casioak. Its great to see Casio going deeper into this concept with some great new designs.
