The way I alwasy interpreted it: Sil was anywhere between 5-10 years older than Tony. So where Tony was in his 40s, Sil was likely in his late 40s to early 50s. Old enough to where Sil would've viewed Tony as a kid when he first entered the family, but also young enough to where their daughters could reasonably be the same age and view each other as equals later in life.
Same. Based on Steve's look, I imagine him being born in 1953-55 to Tony's 1959. When Tony recounts the story of them peaking through the door I imagine him as a late teenager &/or in his early to mid 20s who watched him rise up the ranks as an older brother figure.
Agreed. Sil was probably old enough to be responsible for “babysitting” Tony when they was peaking through the door. Also Tony and Carm married young and had Meadow young, along with that Tony went through the ranks fast making him seem older.
Silvio is an immortal being. No one knows how old he is. He may be harmed, but he cannot die. That's why he only ended up in a coma at the end of the series. He is sleeping, resting, healing his wounds. And before anyone realises what he is, he'll disappear, probably to some country nobody's ever heard of before, like uh, I don't know, Norway or something.
Many Saints should have been about Jackie, Tony, Sil, Artie, and Ralphie and all the crazy stunts they pulled with Dickey as the "Rockstar" they all looked up to.
Well. He’s the consigliere so I thought that’s why Silvio talked to Tony the way he did. He’s the advisor. this might be just a small video, as you said, but it stands out as one that actually adds to the discourse. i appreciate you looking at the primary material to find textual evidence and even fact checking the claims others have made. something that always stood out to me was that paulie says to sylvie "i go way back, before you, *even*"...to me that "even" says a lot and wouldn't be in the sentence if Sylvio wasn't nearly Paulie's age, ie older than Tony. the writers never nailed it down exactly because they could have never imagined that in a show with so much thematic complexity, viewers would fixate on the most irrelevant and distracting details like what year someone was born exactly.
Everyone’s age is wrong in Many Saints of Newark. Jackie Aprile Sr was 44 yrs old when he died meaning he’s 4-5 yrs older than Tony but in MSON he’s a teenager around the same age as Tony considering he’s not old enough to buy alcohol yet. Christopher being a newborn when Tony is teenager is also a huge retcon.
I would like to see more videos like this in between the big ones. 10 minutes of going over a character or a plot point that may have been changed and giving another tidbit is amazing. If it’s real quick, you can make a short. Great video.
It should also be noted Silvio getting involved in the Mob earlier than Tony doesn’t mean he’s that much older than him. A lot of mobsters are high school dropouts, Tony graduating and attending college is a rarity among mobsters. It’s entirely possible Sil dropped out and got a head start on his mob career and Tony came in later after his semester in college but they are still around the same age.
My belief is that Silvio , is 3-5 years older than tony . Similar to Pig Puss and Jackie SR. Old enough to be a "mentor" growing up while still being young enough to hang out with when they were younger. He maybe just got involved in "this thing of ours " younger than Tony did so he appears younger.
One thing is that Gandolfini looked at least ten or fifteen years older than his actual age. He started playing Tony Soprano when he was in his late thirties, but looked like he was at lest fifty. Tony, Silvio, and Big P always looked like they were about the same age, but Little Steven and Vincent Pastore were ten and fifteen years older than Gandolfini. People also might assume Tony and Silvio are the same age because Silvio's daughter is about the same age as Meadow.
Looking back on it, I can't help but wonder if Sil was Tony's "introduction" to the business. He was the one who let Tony peer inside and see his dad do business so Tony could get a taste of just how strong his old man was and how powerful he himself could be. Then he was like Tony's crew's babysitter, feeding advice to Tony and keeping an eye on him for Johnny. Maybe he was the one who pitched the Feech La Manna heist to get Tony pushed up the ladder. Johnny DID end up getting him made pretty shortly after so it stands to reason this might have all been thought out.
Theres also the underlining thing that Tony was young to be a boss Ray calling him the boy wonder that he was put on the fast track because of who his father and uncle were. Also Feech calling him the Boy King and Phil "you got some balls kid I'll give you that"
Silvio didn't know Artie in the pilot only. From then on, you can tell that they've known one another for a while. A lot of things have changed from the pilot.

It’s confirmed that in The Sopranos universe there is an afterlife. Simple explanation would be that Silvio is older, but not much. 3-5 years maybe. When I was a kid I mostly had friends that were 2-3 years older than me. So they also didnt know people I went to school with or was in kindergarten with. At certain points that age difference makes a big impact like when my cousin got into puberty we didnt have much contact for a few years, while we were very close friends before. We got good friends again when I was around 19-20 and age did not really make that much of an impact.
In another video you mentioned a happy wanderer as being your favorite episode, that's crazy because it's also mine, season two is hands down my favorite with happy wanderer being the best. season two is where it all started to come together.
For me personally even before saints of Newark was made I thought Sil was 8-10 years older then Tony and just looked good for his age and was like a older brother figure in a way but the respect still is egual both ways
1:32 I love this scene because I didn’t consider Paulie didn’t know Sil was in the bathroom, and his expression when Sil replies to him talking to vito is priceless
Idk it’s funny to think that Silvio just chose to pal around with kids and teenagers well into his twenties and then it randomly paid off when he was in his 50’s. Aside from the end Silvio has one of the best runs of anybody on the show.
I didn't even know this was a thing that was brought up. I always thought Sil was about 5-10 years older. Close enough to be friends from childhood but old enough to still see Tony as a kid. If I was 15 seeing an 8 year old grow up. Yes he would be a kid in my eyes until we were probably in our 20s to 30s. Paulie always seemed like he was 15-20 years older. He does look like a in shape 60 year old by the middle seasons. And he ran with his dad.
I'm surprised you didn't make this video about Christopher. Michael Imperioli said he considers Christopher in his early 20s in the beginning of the show and that would explain his arrogance as being young and new to the family but in season 5 Cold Cuts Christopher said that Chris wanted to play with Tony and Tony B; they ended up tying him to a tree and leaving him till 3 am. This means Tony and Tony B in their 30s did this to a kid which doesn't really align with how some 30 year olds would act. The implication set in the episode is that they were teens and Chris was a kid which makes Christopher in his 40s during the show but in Many Saints of Newark Tony is almost in his 20s when Chris is still in diapers meaning Christopher is in his 30s throughout the show. Also Silvio says at one point in the show he was Tony's dad's right hand man so I always figured he would've been a really young looking 70.
Always got the impression that Silvio was somewhere between 15 and maybe 20 years and most older than Tony. I got the impression (especially from the early seasons,) that the fact that Tony was so young was a major point “conflict” regarding Tony’s rise to the upper echelon of the Jersey Mob.
I always figured they were 5-10 years apart and at a young age Sil took a liking to Tony and they had a big brother-little brother relationship, showing a kid a big time card game through a peephole isn't all that strange to me. Ya also gotta understand that in the streets ya got people who are coming in young asl, we're talking as young as 8-10 years old doing mule and lookout work, and cats who have survived a long time and are in their 60's and older. So it's just not uncommon for someone in their 20's to be schooling a 13 year old. And if they have a personal relationship they could just be looking out for em like family/community should. Tbh this is the least of it, the one that always messes me up is Chrissy's age. The actors are only about 5 years apart but in the show they make it sound like Tony and Christopher are only about as far apart as Sil and T, but in TMSoN they show them as close to 15+ years apart. And the one thing I felt TMSoN did well was show the fallibility of the characters memories and give it to us as it actually was. But in that timeline Tony would have been in his 20's tying a kid to a tree and Chrissy would be closer to Meadow in age than Tony. The Sopranos, really David Chase, was so insane with the details that they went back and reshot scenes that he didn't like seasons later. With the exception of the pilot episode most everything is very tight and there are few contradictions or anything else that can't be explained by unreliable sources of information. But this one definitely stands out so I don't understand what I'm missing or why Chase decided to go that route with the movie.
My theory is that Sil’s father might have given himself a more “American” First name. I do also think that Sil was about 10 or so years older than Tony. IDK, I’m probably wrong.
I think most of it could be explained by Sil being 5 or so years older. A five year difference is big when the characters are teenagers "I knew you from when you were a kid," but its must smaller as adults. Them peeking into the game could be less like little kids, and more like wannabe hang-around youts. And it could also explain why Sil got the offer to be boss first.
I don't think it's as complicated as anyone is making it. Silvio is a little bit older than Tony, and then Paulie is older then again. Anthony got is position as top of the family because of who his father was and because he was a good earner and leader. Sil never persued being a boss. When Tony was in his teens and Sil his 20s then their age difference would make Tony seem like a Kid to Sil. Once Tony was out of his teens and a raising star those 5/10 years age difference between them would be less siginificant. Tony rose fast, met then overran Sil in rank because of who is father was and his own merit. So they appeared like peers because they probably got made around the same time. Sil appears older/younger depending on if he's wearing his hair piece too.
My take is Silvio is 4-7 or 8 years older than Tony but Tony was mature kid so he was friends with older kids once he got to his late teens/early 20’s. Tony was a fast riser in the family, remember. So he would be a contemporary in the mafia with guys older than him.
Silvio's age is another way in which The Many Saints Of Newark screwed up. The only thing worse was Junior having Dickie whacked for laughing at him for slipping.
Yeah I enjoyed the vid, the title was so specific I had to find out why you wanted to talk about this lol. Luckily Silvio wasn't much older, Tony doesn't respect his elders
Great analysis. But regarding the point about Silvio not knowing much about Artie Bucco in the pilot, I think the pilot should not be considered to be fully cannon. Silvio is not even portrayed as a made man really. Just as the owner of the club they hang out at. A considerable amount of time passed between the pilot being shot and the second episode being shot, which gave Chase time to figure some things out. Not everything makes sense if you look at the pilot.
Great video breakdown. I always thought Sil was 5-10 years older, but what about Richie? If he was dating Janice in high school, Janice was only 2 years older than Tony, so Richie was 30 years old dating a 16 year old? Johnny Boy wouldn’t allow that lol
I finished the show recently so I don't have this community perception people seem to have built up over the years and I always thought of Sil and Paulie as similar in age seeing as both characters were given almost cartoonish "old-school gangster" looks and mannerisms that illustrate that they're from a different era to Tony.
I think al lot of the confusion around silvios age is because Steve van Zandt looked younger than he actually was. I think if he wouldn´t wear a wig, he would look much older.
You may say that you're done talking about The Many Saints Of Newark but you know as well as I do, that as soon as you're out, they'll draw you back in!

If I was 15 seeing an 8 year old grow up. Yes he would be a kid in my eyes until we were probably in our 20s to 30s. Paulie always seemed like he was 15-20 years older. He does look like a in shape 60 year old by the middle seasons. And he ran with his dad.
Thank you for making this point. Ive been making it for a couple years now.
I always assumed Silvio was 5-8 years older than Tony and was his “big brother” in the mafia
Ive always felt silvio is between Tony and pauly,
7-10 years older and pauly the same from silvio
Timeline got fucked up.
Ambatukam
My theory is that Sil’s father might have given himself a more “American” First name. I do also think that Sil was about 10 or so years older than Tony. IDK, I’m probably wrong.

A man after my heart. Great choice Kino!
Im more interested in Silvio's fiberglas hairdo. Where did he get that? Dies he just place the entire wig on his head in one piece?
If you have run with street, gangs, or street crews , or whatever you wanna call it, there are people of various ages within the same crew
Tony was a crappy-looking fifty- Silvio was a well-preserved sixty. Mystery solved.
My best friend and I watched Many Saints a couple years ago and had this exact same discussion.
I own that same Sopranos family history book! 😄 It's one of the paperbacks with the black and white poster cover.
What if Silvio is a Highlander waiting for the quickening?
You know, things might be a little different PureKino… you can accept some responsibility for a change…
Silivo explained in All Due Respect. I being inow you for since Tony was a kid.
It's strange that when you get out of the fables in the mines, they've come to aquarium
I always thought Tony was the youngest out of them. They call him “the boy wonder,” suggesting he was younger.
I always assumed at the beginning it was:
Christopher: Late 20’s
Tony: Early 40’s
Sil: Early 50’s
Paulie: Early 60’s.
Junior: Early 70’s
Just when I thought I was young,...
They prove that I'm old. 😮Lol
Timeline got f**ked up
Great analysis.
Hey guys, I hope everyone has a great Presidents’ Day.
What about Billy Leotardo, a 47 year old kid!
You may say that you're done talking about The Many Saints Of Newark but you know as well as I do, that as soon as you're out, they'll draw you back in!
I gotta disagree Tony and Sylvia could be friends without him knowing arty bouko Artie's pop was a chef Tony's and Sylvia's dad We're different Sylvia Jackie Ralphie And salvatore We're running around in high school together Jackie did not even get the initial nod it was Tony who was the widskidJackie did not even get the initial nod it was Tony who was the witzkid If Sylvia was olderit wasn't more than a year or 2 Polly is the only one who goes back to the days of corado and Johnny boy You cannot take many saints seriously The writing was pretty bad
