Interesting tidbit about Silvio's name. In Mario Puzo's 'THe Last Don', there is a character whose mother, when she is pregnant, says she is going to name Silvio, but when he is born, she ends up naming him Dante.
FUN FACT TO ADD TO THE THEORY: STEVEN VAN ZANDT was planning to reunite with his former THE SOPRANOS co-star JAMES GANDOLFINI on his new series LILYHAMMER before the actor's death in June (13). The rocker/actor played Gandolfini's right hand man Silvio Dante on the acclaimed drama series, and was developing a storyline on his popular Netflix show, about an American gangster hiding from his Mafia past in a Norwegian town, so he could work with his pal once again. In an interview on U.S. breakfast show Big Morning Buzz Live, he explains, "We talked about him (Gandolfini) doing a cameo appearance in the final episode of the second season. I wrote a scene where my character was going through the snow and he comes to a cabin, he opens the cabin door and it was going to be Jimmy in his bathrobe and T-shirt looking like (he did on) The Sopranos, and he was gonna say, 'Frankie the Fixer, you're here too?' "You know, having some fun with the end of The Sopranos and how it ended in a freaky kinda way, implying that The Sopranos all went to Norway. And then I was going to go into the cabin and (Gandolfini's on screen wife) Edie Falco was going to be there and the kids too." Van Zandt was also in talks with Sopranos creator David Chase to direct the scene. The reunion plans ended when Gandolfini suffered a fatal heart attack in Italy.
I remember watching LilyHammer without any expectations of it being good and I remember being pleasantly surprised and binge watching it immediately upon watching the first episode. It turned out to be a great show on its own merits. Yes it was sopranos like but it was also it’s own thing with what was to me a fresh and entertaining storyline.
Maybe that’s what I was thinking all this time when Silvio was shot and in a coma. That Lily hammer is a dream show of silvio and the cancelation of the show meant that silvio was pulled the plugged and died
I watched all three seasons. The first two seasons are entertaining and the location/culture of Lilyhammer gives it a unique presentation. Season three felt like they were just throwing twists and turns to see what worked, and suddenly there were too many plot lines and random cameos.
Lilyhammer was a massive hit everywhere in Europe and deservedly so. It was surprisingly well written and hilarious. Van Zandt showed his comical talent and proved he can easily carry a show.
Yea they mention the Sopranos show. But if you watched the sopranos, that show did it all the time. Think of the times Goodfellas is referenced and how many sopranos actors were in goodfellas. Or even Ralph, think of him when A.J. Gives his mom a copy of the Matrix for her birthday, Ralph is Sypher. So even though the Sopranos are mentioned, it could still very well be in the sopranos universe
I love the idea of Silvio learning NORWEGIAN out of all the languages in the world to move to an ex-olympic town. Credit where credit is due, the premise of the show was a riot.
I just decided to believe this was some kind of alternative universe or something, it managed to fill an empty space that the Sopranos left, it filled it up with dark comedy and a rather sweet story
I think alot of the humor in Lilyhammer is hard for people not Norwegian to understand (?) but it is nice to see so many around the world like it. Many well written parts and good acting, both funny ones and nasty ones .. Trond Fausa is my favourite, so funny. Steven Van Zandt is of course the big poster name here, it is cool just to watch his facial expressions 😅
As an Italian American, I think the same thing about a lot of the humor in the Sopranos. But I do love Lillyhammer, especially seeing some of the same actors from Norsemen in different kinds of roles.
Sil was by far one of the best characters on this show and one of my personal favorites. He was absolutely loyal to Tony, even rejecting an offer to be apart of taking the boss out. At one point or another, most of Tony's guys at least thought of taking him out (Furio, Chris, Junior, Richie), switching sides (Paulie), or screwing him over somehow (Ralph, Pussy, Carlo, Eugene). But Sil stood by Tony through thick and thin. I was bummed when New York killed Bobby. But I was actually sad when they managed to hit Silvio. If only he and Patsy had left 1 minute sooner the hitters would have missed them. But that shooting always pissed me off. I always thought Patsy could have driven around the car or threw it into reverse a lot faster, something.
@@paulzammataro7185 Good point. Sil knew New York was taking out Jersey captains. You'd think he'd have been ready for anything. He also had to assume he was a target. He was Tony's consigliere. And he was leaving the Bing. New York knew he was always there. A career mobster should have known he had a huge target on his back and had his gun in his hand at all times
It makes sense that Lillyhammer is Silvio's coma dream. When they reference "the Sopranos" we must remember it's all a dream where absolutely nothing makes sense 90% of the time.
@@E.C.2 👏👏to add to your comment. it seems most all movies are made to mimic the WAY we dream. Before it was a secret. Now that everything has become “meta,” (self referential) movies are openly saying “hey! This is one big dream.” Common ways of creating a dream like scene are with melodic music 🎼 then, altered cutscenes, where a man will have a gun in his left hand then cut back to the man with the gun in his right. Or a window being closed, then, cut back and it’s open. Day time turning to night then back to daylight, etc.. This happens so much it used to bother me when I noticed it. Especially in childhood favorite films like The Predator, where, the scenes constantly showed the moon 🌙 and stars then BOOM; back to the afternoon 1 minute later!. Lol. It’s interesting to watch movies and see how many continuity breaks you can count. Many times it is on purpose; to make the viewer disoriented and confused or scared or excited , without knowing why. It’s good to remember that 90% of communication is non verbal.
First of, I really enjoy your videos! The depth of everything you are talking about, and explaining things is perfect. The show is great and it definitely should not have ended so quickly. And from what we were told here in Norway. The show ended because of a beef between Netflix and NRK. Another thing. When Tony Sirico joined, there were rumors of more Soprano’s cast joining. Like James Gandolfini and Steven schirripa, it was even a plot developed.
Lilyhammer really is a great series. Hard to picture the “Sopranos episode” line as a sure fire sign that the series isn’t a dream, though. That would mean Frankie Tagliano looks and acts exactly like Silvio Dante, his brother (who’s a Priest) looks exactly like Paulie Gualtieri and his ex-girlfriend looks and sounds exactly like Gabriella Dante and no one seems to notice or care.
I'm surprised Lilyhammer was considered to be taken off Netflix because believe it or not, as of this comment, it's still up on the platform. I know because I recently binged it weeks ago! I can tell you one thing: it's surprisingly good. It may not be as good as The Sopranos but as a story of its own, it actually holds up pretty well. The little Easter eggs and nods to The Sopranos as well as other mafia type media were nice to see and to have it take place mostly in Norway helps to add flavor to the show's backdrop. It actually was slated to have a 4th season in 2015 but due to mutual disagreement between Steven and Netflix, it fell through and made the third season the final season. Overall, it's actually still worth a watch in my honest opinion.
I was devastated when Lilyhammer was not renewed for a fourth season but understood why, the first two seasons were fantastic but the third was a bit of a miss unfortunately.

Well James & Edie were supposed to appear as Tony and Carmela in S2 finale - you can find these details (including the plan for David Chase to direct) on IMDB.
Considering the fact they got Steven Van Zandt playing a mob guy and have some of his Sopranos alumni on the show, I would have to assume they were OK with some of those fan theories as themselves were making a spiritual successor to Sopranos through Lilyhammer.
Benny Fazio did the same as Silvio did after hitting Phil Leotardo, except he fled to El Rey, Mexico (south of Cancún). With all his earnings and compensation, he owned a hotel and saloon.
Wasn’t there a line in Sopranos where Silvio says that he’s interested in checking out Norway? I vividly remember there being a line where he’s interested in visiting a place like Oslo or Lilyhammer in one of the episodes before or after the coma. And in Tony’s coma, Tony sold patio furniture. Throughout the show, he mentions that if we wasn’t in the life he was in he would be some idiot selling patio furniture on Route 22. On a random note, being from NJ native myself, that line was actually a deep cut reference. If you go to Route 22 in NJ, the area is FILLED with furniture stores. Macys galleries, Best Buy, Reymour Flannigan, that one big chandelier store, etc. It’s still like that today, the only big change is that they added a LIDL 😂
I think it’s just a reach. Netflix used Steve purely based on network value to boost viewership as people will associate him to being in a successful show within the same genre. It was a cash grab and they did just enough to draw a connection without getting sued for copywrite
I thought it was a good show and planned to watch it again, so hopefully it does make a return somewhere. To be totally honest I didn't think I'd like it and even after we started watching it I figured the novelty would wear off pretty fast. But it actually just got better imo. Definitely just paying homage, but pretty good too.
Isn’t it obvious? We’re all living in Silvio coma dream, that’s the world where his life is turned into a very popular tv series. The real world is the world of the sopranos, and the reason we have no new episodes of the sopranos is because Silvio is in a coma and doesn’t know what happens next
Its possible thats were the show left him but it was never confrimed or denined steven van zan said in interviews the viewers can believe what they like. I personally don't think so its the same actor playing these two characters with the same personality but that the way I veiwed it I love this guy I was really upset thats how it ended for Him his not dead but in coma. I was very happy about lily hammer an really enjoyed the show and was very happy he got a lead role.
A good video & an interesting theory, I really like Lilyhammer & the nod to The Sopranos I got a kick out of it, you can definitely see the influence on the show. BTW they have come to an agreement so it is staying up on Netflix so that's great I would definitely recommend it I just finished watching it yesterday. Enjoy it
Also fun fact about Silvio’s nightmare midway in the Sopranos where he has the Jarlsberg delivery dream. Jarlsberg is Norwegian cheese correct me if I wrong
Never even heard of this show. I should check it out. Also wasn't Frankie The Fixer the name of Captain Lou Albano's character in WiseGuys? EDIT: Watching it now. I'll check back to this video once I finish the series.
One more big clue to this theory that strongly backs it. In S3E1 of Lillyhammer, Frank (Stevens character) is at the hospital for being shot but he is not in a coma and shares a room with an old man who's got dementia. Frank is really sick of the hospital and says "Please tell me it's a dream". The old man responds with; "It's all a dream Silvio". He literally says Silvio! Never noticed it until now but this is almost a confirmation
Lilhammer was well crafted to get the Soprano's fans to buy in on the premise, adding little nods here and there, absolutely perfection in doing so. Anymore you can't have a show without Easter eggs, hidden meanings and call backs to other shows. The fourth wall is down

Considering the fact they got Steven Van Zandt playing a mob guy and have some of his Sopranos alumni on the show, I would have to assume they were OK with some of those fan theories as themselves were making a spiritual successor to Sopranos through Lilyhammer.
Actually, they'd probably consider it complimentary. The writers are obviously fans of The Sopranos and it's one of the most iconic TV series ever.
That would be a huge honor to be associated with sopranos
I always used to think that Lilyhammer was Silvio's coma dream.
3:00 I'm literately playing WOW while watching this lol
great video kino. any chance we get some lilyhammerlogs down the road?
That would be awesome
I think it’s just a reach. Netflix used Steve purely based on network value to boost viewership as people will associate him to being in a successful show within the same genre. It was a cash grab and they did just enough to draw a connection without getting sued for copywrite
Love the bread museum you put at the end there classic!
The true meaning has yet to reveal itself.
I love lillyhammer and the sopranos they both good
I thought it was a good show and planned to watch it again, so hopefully it does make a return somewhere. To be totally honest I didn't think I'd like it and even after we started watching it I figured the novelty would wear off pretty fast. But it actually just got better imo. Definitely just paying homage, but pretty good too.
Torgier is just Silvio’s coma version of Chrissy
It's a great series, very well done.
Never knew Silvio was in a WoW commercial. It so outta character it's amazing.
I LOVED THIS SHOW!!! It broke my heart when they didn't renew it.
Well it is basically a spin off of the Sopranos. Very good series and still apparently available on Netflix. Thx for sharing this.
I remember I watched all episodes in 2020 it was a good show I like it sadly it never got more seasons
I don't always watch a Kino video, but when it's about anything Soprano's, I watch.
Isn’t it obvious? We’re all living in Silvio coma dream, that’s the world where his life is turned into a very popular tv series. The real world is the world of the sopranos, and the reason we have no new episodes of the sopranos is because Silvio is in a coma and doesn’t know what happens next
More like a dystopian nightmare 😓
Lay off the drugs kid
Silvio's coma dream is the best complement for that shity show and the only explanation to why we talk about that! Thanks for the insight Kino!!
🤌Now that's a spicy meatball!
I watched episode 1 under quarantine praying to catch the Rona instead
Enjoy it
one of my fav sopranos theories
Also fun fact about Silvio’s nightmare midway in the Sopranos where he has the Jarlsberg delivery dream. Jarlsberg is Norwegian cheese correct me if I wrong
Never even heard of this show. I should check it out. Also wasn't Frankie The Fixer the name of Captain Lou Albano's character in WiseGuys?
EDIT: Watching it now. I'll check back to this video once I finish the series.
I loved Lillyhammer, but never made this connection. Very interesting theory. And I loved Springsteen being the assassin in the last few episodes.
😮
Just when i thought i was out, they pull me back in.
PLEASE do reviews of Lilyhammer episodes. It was such a good show.
Van Zant said Lilhammer is getting taken off Netflix on the 20th of November, It's a 22nd and I'm currently rewatching it 🙃
Love this show I wish they had more.
Lilhammer was well crafted to get the Soprano's fans to buy in on the premise, adding little nods here and there, absolutely perfection in doing so. Anymore you can't have a show without Easter eggs, hidden meanings and call backs to other shows. The fourth wall is down
Short answer yes absolutely especially the scene where they guy literally says it’s all just a Dream Silvio
Lilyhammer is still on Netflix UK and is well worth the watch ,
